18. Advances in the development of a instrumented head surrogate for brain injury investigation

Abstract

Acquiring knowledge on head traumas is useful since they represent a dangerous outcome of traumatic events. Injury criteria aim to link clinical evidence of injury with experimentally measurable physical quantities, however, recent studies based on numerical methods have pointed out that also other factors could be key contributors to brain injury probability and severity. Providing an experimental measure of more advanced injury criteria is challenging, and only few research groups have started to address the problem. Starting from an existing and validated biofidelic dummy head, advances in the mechanical components and sensors embedded inside the model have been carried out, aiming to improve both bio-fidelity and to address the measure of more advanced criteria. After realizing the prototype, preliminary drop tests were performed impacting the helmeted head over an anvil. Data collected showed increase of injury criteria values with the impact force. Results proved the possibility of using the surrogate for investigating simple and advanced injury criteria, and future works will aim to set test parameters to levels compatible with helmet standards.

25. A novel multi-axial pressure sensor probe for measuring triaxial stress states inside soft materials

Abstract

This paper presents the concept, design, construction, and validation of a novel probe based on the hexadic disposition of six pressure sensors suitable for measuring triaxial stress states inside bulky soft materials. The measurement of triaxial stress states inside bulk materials such as brain tissue surrogates is a challenging task needed to investigate internal organs’ stress states and validate FE models. The purpose of the work was the development and validation of a 17 × 17 × 17 mm probe containing six pressure sensors. To do so, six piezoresistive pressure sensors of 6 mm diameter were arranged into an hexad at three cartesian axes and bisecting angles, based on the analytical solution of the stress tensor. The resulting probe was embedded in a soft silicone rubber of known characteristics, calibrated under cyclic compression and shear in three orientations, and statically validated with combined loads. A calibration matrix was computed, and validation tests allowed us to estimate Von Mises stress under combined stress with an error below 6%. Hence, the proposed probe design and method can give indications about the complex stress state developing internally to soft materials under triaxial high-strain fields, opening applications in the analysis of biological models or physical surrogates involving parenchyma organs.

Abstract

Three of the toroidal field (TF) coils of the JET Tokamak have developed interturn faults. These faults have not been catastrophic and it has been possible to continue operation and replace the faulty coils with spares at the next pre-planned shutdown. The faults were found to be due to water leaks. The coil coolant was changed from water to an insulating fluid. All known faulty coils have been changed and latest measurements do not detect any faults on the installed coils.

31. Personality profiles and problematic internet use in a sample of Italian adolescents

Abstract

Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between specific personality profiles and Internet use in a sample of Italian adolescents. Method: Four hundred thirty-two adolescents (58.3% males) with an average age of 14.41 years (SD=.95) were enrolled in the study. Participants were administered the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the Minnesota Multiphasic Inventory – Adolescent Form (MMPI-A). A two-step cluster analysis was relied according to IAT items’ scores. Results: Participants were grouped into three clusters labeled “Regulated Internet users” (n=180), “Involved with Internet activities” (n=105), and “At risk for problematic Internet use” (n=147). Consistently, the group at-risk for problematic Internet use showed higher IAT score and MMPI-A scores than the other groups, while no differences emerged between the group of regulated Internet users and the group of those involved with Internet activities. For the group at risk for problematic Internet use, the MMPI-A Clinical Scales on Paranoia (Pa) and Schizophrenia (Sc) showed the highest elevation, indicating a MMPI-A codetype 6-8/8-6 which describes adolescents with ego immaturity, dysregulated affects and behaviors, and reduced reality testing. Conclusions: Adolescents at risk for developing a dysfunctional use of the Internet may have little insight, bizarre beliefs, grandiose thought, and a persecutory view of the external world that may limit their capacity to counteract feelings of hopelessness and anguish. They could perceive the Internet as safe environment where it is possible to express such dysregulated feelings and behaviors, and to cope with emotional distress.

Abstract

The first tokamak discharges with deuterium-tritium mixtures have been carried out in the Joint European Torus (JET). The main objectives were to produce more than IMW of fusion power in a controlled way, to determine tritium retention in torus systems and to establish effective means of tritium removal. The experiments were undertaken within limits imposed by restrictions on vessel activation and tritium usage. Deuterium plasmas were heated by high power deuterium neutral beams from fourteen sources and fuelled by two neural beam sources injecting tritium. In the best (D-T discharge), the tritium concentration was about 11% at peak performance, when total neutron emission rate was 6.0*1017 s-1, with 1.7 MW of fusion power. The fusion amplification factor QDT was 0.15. With optimum tritium concentration, this pulse would have produced a fusion power approximately=5 MW and nominal QDT=0.46. The same extrapolation for the best pure deuterium discharge gives about 11 MW and a nominal QDT=1.14. Techniques for introducing, tracking, monitoring and recovering tritium were highly effective.

Abstract

Studies on major depressive disorders (MDD) pathophysiology show decreased blood levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) that increase after antidepressant treatment. The link between BDNF levels and antidepressants is still controversial. In addiction, there is a relationship between MDD and concurrent cognitive function. Hippocampus is linked to memory and learning and BDNF is abundant in this area. For this reason we investigated the presence of any association between paroxetine treatment, BDNF levels and cognitive performances in depressed patients.Sixteen patients with MDD were compared with a control group of 18 randomly selected healthy individuals. Blood samples were taken and clinical and neuropsychological assessments were performed at baseline and after two months of treatment. Plasma and serum BDNF levels were measured with the Elisa method.Plasma BDNF levels are lower in depressed patients and increased after treatment. No serum BDNF significant differences were found. Depressed patients showed a mild deficit in prose memory tests that reached normality after antidepressant treatment. No correlations were evidenced between patients plasma BDNF levels and cognitive results.To our knowledge this is one of the few studies on the effects of paroxetine treatment on plasma BDNF levels. We confirm literature data regarding the link between BDNF plasma levels, depression and antidepressant treatments. In addiction we found a specific cognitive deficit of depressed patients.
