Background: Globally, traumatic brain injury (TBI) is recognized as one of the most significant contributors to mortality and disability. Most of the patients who have experienced TBI will be discharged home and reunited with their families or primary caregivers. The degree of severity of their reliance on caregivers varies. Therefore, the task of delivering essential care to the patients becomes demanding for the caregivers. A significant proportion of caregivers expressed considerable burden, distress, and discontentment with their lives. Therefore, it is critical to comprehend the dynamic of TBI and caregivers to optimize patient care, rehabilitation, and administration. The effectiveness of the Brain Injury Family Intervention (BIFI) program tailored for caregivers of patients with TBI has been widely proven in Western countries. However, the impact is less clear among caregivers of patients with TBI in Malaysia. Objective: This study aims to assess the effectiveness of BIFI in reducing emotional distress and burden of care, fulfilling the needs, and increasing the life satisfaction of caregivers of patients with TBI at government hospitals in Malaysia. Methods: This is a 2-arm, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial. It will be conducted at Hospital Rehabilitasi Cheras and Hospital Sungai Buloh. In total, 100 caregivers of patients with TBI attending the neurorehabilitation unit will be randomized equally to the intervention and control groups. The intervention group will undergo the BIFI program, whereas the control group will receive standard treatment. Caregivers aged ≥18 years, caring for patients who have completed >3 months after the injury, are eligible to participate. The BIFI program will be scheduled for 5 sessions as recommended by the developer of the module. Each session will take approximately 90 to 120 minutes. Objective: Online parenting interventions for enhancing child development, specifically mental health is relatively new in Malaysia. This pilot study tests the feasibility, acceptability, and initial effects of a universal digital-assisted parenting intervention (DaPI) in promoting mental health in adolescents by improving parental behaviors and self-efficacy. Methods: A two-arm pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted. Twenty-four mothers of adolescent aged 10 to 14 years from a non-clinical sample were recruited online and randomly allocated into two groups (intervention [DaPI] and waitlist-control [WLC]). Eight weekly sessions were delivered online via technological devices. Feasibility outcomes were based on the participants’ engagement in DaPI and study retention. Primary (parental behaviors and self-efficacy) and secondary (adolescent mental health) outcomes were assessed using an online survey at baseline (T0), post-intervention (T1), and 1-month follow-up (T2). Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics and an intention-to-treat approach. Results: The DaPI was well received by the mothers. Retention was high (81.8%) in both groups and intervention adherence was excellent (91.6%). Within-group analyses showed a significant decrease in physical control at T2 and an increase in parental self-efficacy at T1 and T2 among the DaPI mothers. No significant differences were observed in adolescents’ mental health at any time point. As for the WLC group, there were no significant differences in all the outcome variables across the three assessment moments. Between groups analyses revealed DaPI mothers had significant differences in proactive parenting at T1, and in positive reinforcement and lax control at T2. There were no significant differences in adolescents’ mental health between the groups at any time point. Discussion: The DaPI is feasible and acceptable in the Malaysian context. We conducted a study with the aims of examining adolescents’ perceptions of their mother’s and father’s parenting behavior and developing a new Malaysian Parenting Behavior Inventory (MPBI). In Phase One, we recruited 903 adolescents using the proportionate to size sampling technique. The results of the exploratory factor analyses of the MPBI Mother and Father scales revealed four underlying factor structures: Warmth, Monitoring, and Harsh Discipline were somewhat similar to those in past findings and theory, and Indigenous centered on religious and cultural values in parenting. In Phase Two, using an independent sample of adolescents, we replicated the factor structure of Study One with confirmatory factor analysis, resulting in strong model fit estimates. We conclude that the MPBI has good initial psychometric properties and is culturally influenced. The MPBI may be useful for prevention and intervention programs in clinical and non-clinical settings, including providing valuable information on factors pertinent to parent-adolescent interactions.

Objectives: The present pilot study examined the associations between attachment relationships, psychological problems, and negative automatic thoughts among late adolescents in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Subjects: A total of 98 participants (male = 49, female = 49) were recruited from government colleges in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Methods: The measures used to assess the research variables of this cross sectional study were the Inventory of Parent-Peer Attachment (IPPA-Urdu), Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-Urdu), and the Automatic Thought Questionnaire (ATQ-Urdu). Results: All of these measures had good reliabilities. Findings of the correlation analyses demonstrated that maternal, paternal and peer attachment relationships were negatively related to symptoms of depression and anxiety as well as to negative automatic thoughts. On the other hand, depressive and anxiety symptoms were positively associated with negative automatic thoughts. Additionally, findings suggested that future studies must investigate adolescents from two-parent households and exclude those with only one living parent. Conclusion: The results underscored the need for further investigations of the linkages between attachment relationships, negative automatic thoughts and psychological problems on larger samples.

Objectives: The present study aimed to examine the mediational role of maladaptive cognitive schema in the association between stressful life events, which are operationalised as major (i. e. negative life events) and minor (i. e. daily hassles) life stressors, and depressive symptoms among adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional correlational study was conducted to recruit participants across four selected states of Kedah, Kelantan, Melaka and Selangor in Peninsular Malaysia. This study involved a total of 1,032 adolescents from 25 government secondary schools, identified using probability proportional to size cluster sampling technique. Data were collected through a self-report questionnaire. Results: Using structural equation modelling analyses, findings revealed a full mediation effect of maladaptive cognitive schema between negative life events and depressive symptoms, and a partial mediation effect between daily hassles and depressive symptoms. Conclusions: This study provided valuable insights about the significance of maladaptive cognitive schema as a mediator in the stress-depression association and advanced the understanding of mechanism underlying development of depressive symptoms among adolescents in Malaysia. Findings also benefit the clinical practice in the development of targeted depression prevention and intervention programs.

Sexual orientation other than heterosexuality is believed to be unnatural, sinful and dangerous in a country like Malaysia that is steadfast in religion and culture. Children sexual orientation has subsequently been a sensitive, challenging, and frightening topic for parents. Past studies have documented the role of nature and nurture in the development of social orientation. Although preliminary studies have found genetic to be a significant factor, it was inconclusive if it was the only factor in determining sexual orientation. Hence, this paper will highlight the role of parents in nurturing sexual orientation of children. Despite lack of studies in local and Western context, the few studies available indicated that a secure attachment bond between parent and child is essential for healthy psychosexual and identity development. Additionally, this paper highlights the importance of communication, unconditional love and support between parent and child throughout the developmental stages leading to adulthood. Furthermore, this paper will briefly discuss possible treatment options for children with sexual orientation issues and its impact on children psychological health and well-being. This paper will conclude with suggestions on future research to further understand the development of sexual orientation in children.

Depressive symptomatology is among the primary psychological problems experienced by adolescents. Extant literature has also extensively reported sex diferences in the occurrence of depressive symptoms. However, a majority of related research has primarily been carried out in the Western context. Hence, we conducted a study to identify the prevalence of depressive symptoms among Malaysian adolescents, and to determine its relationship with certain risk factors as well as the potential moderating role of sex. The sample comprised of 964 adolescents from 20 secondary schools across Malaysia. Logistic regression results demonstrated that stressful life events and maternal verbal aggression signifcantly predicted symptoms of depression. In moderation tests, sex signifcantly interacted with stressful life events and parental verbal aggression in predicting depressive symptoms. Hence, there is evidence to suggest that the depressogenic impact of stressful life events and parental verbal aggression on depressive symptomatology difers between male and female adolescents.

Introduction: Early onset of externalizing behaviour may increase the likelihood of extensive maladaptation in future life. Recently, there has been a growing research undertaken on the role of religiosity on externalizing behaviour among Muslim adolescents. However, the mechanism underlying this relationship is still poorly understood. This study sets out to examine the relationships between adolescent religiosity, self-control, and externalizing behaviours (rule-breaking and aggressive behaviours) of Muslim juveniles in rehabilitation centre. Methods: Questionnaire assessments of adolescent religiosity, self-control, rule-breaking behaviour, and aggressive behaviour were collected from 427 Muslim adolescents aged between 13 to 18 years old in eight Tunas Bakti Schools (STB). Results: Structural equation modeling analysis indicated adolescent religiosity was negatively associated with externalizing behaviour, both directly and indirectly. The indirect association was mediated by self-control. This study suggests that greater adolescent religiosity was associated with higher self-control, which in turn lowers both rule-breaking and aggressive behaviour. Conclusion: The results highlight the important role of religiosity and self-control in preventing externalizing behaviour among Muslim adolescents. Further step towards designing preventative strategy may need to consider integrating both Islamic-based program and self-control input to enhance mental health and behavioural adjustment of Muslim adolescents.

Introduction: Negative automatic thoughts refer to subconscious thinking patterns in response to irrational and self-defeating stimuli. Individuals who are depressed tend to have biased negative automatic thoughts. Therefore, there is a need to refine our understanding of what contributes to the development of adolescent depressive symptoms. The current study examined the mediating role of negative automatic thoughts in the link between maternal attachment and depressive symptoms among late adolescents in Pakistan. Methods: This cross-sectional study focused on 936 (males=423, females=513) students aged 17 to 19 years old, who were selected through multistage cluster sampling technique. Respondents answered self-report questionnaires which assessed maternal attachment, depressive symptoms, and negative automatic thoughts. Structural equation modelling was utilised to analyse the relationships among the research variables. Results: The findings indicated that 39.3% had negative automatic thoughts; whereas, 5.6% experienced severe depressive symptoms. Correlational analysis showed that maternal attachment had a negative association with depressive symptoms and negative automatic thoughts. In contrast, depressive symptoms were positively related to negative automatic thoughts. Structural analysis revealed that negative automatic thoughts partially mediated the association of maternal attachment with depressive symptoms among late adolescents. Findings specifically demonstrated that those with insecure maternal attachment tend to have negative automatic thoughts, which subsequently lead to depressive symptoms. Conclusion: In conclusion, findings highlight the importance of secure attachment to the mother and positive automatic thoughts in combating depressive symptoms; thus ensuring a healthy psychological development for adolescents.

Introduction: Depressive symptoms are major public health issues with significantly increasing rates during adolescence. Specific factors and mechanisms associated with depressive symptoms still need to be identified. The present study aimed to examine direct relationships between paternal attachment and negative life events (NLE) to depressive symptoms. Indirect effect of automatic thoughts on the relationships was also examined. Methods: A sample of 1030 adolescents aged between 13 and 19 years (mean=15.36) was recruited using probability proportional to size cluster sampling from selected states in Peninsular Malaysia to complete self-report measures on the study variables. Results: Structural equation modelling indicated that paternal attachment in terms of secure, approachability and anxious fearful were directly associated to depressive symptoms. Broadly, increases in secure and approachability attachments followed by decreases in depressive symptoms. Adolescents who experienced anxious fearful attachment seemed to be more vulnerable to depressive symptoms. Moreover, results from mediation analyses revealed that automatic thoughts mediated the effect of two attachment variables (i.e., anxious fearful and responsiveness) and NLE to depressive symptoms. Conclusion: These findings shed light on the concurrent effects of attachment and life events on depressive symptoms, providing evidence on how to reduce depressive symptoms among adolescents. The current study also expands knowledge on the role of automatic thoughts as potentially relevant mediator. Intervention and prevention programs aimed at preventing adolescents from the deleterious effects of depressive symptoms should involve both parents and adolescents in order to promote optimal attachment relationships and minimize depressive cognitions in adolescents.

Depressive symptomatology is a serious mental health problem that has been observed among Malaysian adolescents. Hence, we conducted a cross-sectional study to identify the risk and protective factors for adolescent depressive symptoms. Specifically, we hypothesized that stressful life events, parental verbal aggression, and parental warmth are significantly associated with adolescent depressive symptoms. A sample of 1092 adolescents (13-19 years old; 447 boys and 645 girls) was recruited using probability proportional to size cluster sampling from 20 secondary schools in four states across Malaysia. Results of the multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that stressful life events and maternal verbal aggression had significant main effects on depressive symptoms. In the moderation analyses, paternal warmth alleviated the influence of paternal verbal aggression on depressive symptoms. In contrast, both paternal and maternal warmth exacerbated the depressogenic impact of maternal verbal aggression. Such findings could improve prevention and intervention programs for combatting depressive symptoms in Malaysian adolescents.

Objectives: Distortions in autobiographical memory have been implicated in major depressive disorder (MDD). Those with MDD demonstrate a ‘depressogenic’ autobiographical life structure. Research has not examined how culture influences this process. We investigated whether Malay individuals (members of an interdependent culture) with MDD demonstrated a ‘depressogenic’ autobiographical life structure similar to that of British individuals (members of an independent culture) with MDD. Design: A 2 (Culture; Malay, British) × 2 (Mood; depressed, control) cross‐sectional design using a card sort task and self‐report measures was used. Methods: Malay individuals with MDD or no history of MDD completed the life‐structure card‐sorting task, which provided a novel method for investigating organizational structure of the life narrative. These data were compared to previously collected data in which British individuals with MDD or without MDD had completed the same task within the same experimental protocol. Results: Pan‐culturally those with MDD had greater negativity (i.e., used more negative attributes), negative redundancy (i.e., used the same negative attributes repeatedly across life chapters) and negative emodiversity (i.e., had greater variety and relative abundance of negative attributes), and reduced positive redundancy (i.e., used the same positive attributes repeatedly across chapters) in their structuring relative to controls. While the British MDD group had greater compartmentalization (i.e., the negative and positive attributes were clustered separately across different chapters) than British controls, the Malay MDD group had lower levels of compartmentalization than Malay controls. Conclusions: The findings suggest culture may shape aspects of the autobiographical life structure in MDD.

Psychological health as one of the most crucial indicators of successful adolescents has received considerable attention in the literature. High prevalence rates of various psychological problems amongst adolescents emphasize the significance of identifying paternal parenting behaviour that may reduce the risk of these problems. However, little attention has been given to how fathers influence their adolescents’ psychological health, especially in an Asian context. To address this issue, this paper presents a thorough discussion of past literature related to paternal parenting behaviour and psychological health of adolescents. The discussion begins with a review related to psychological health, paternal parenting behaviour, and followed by the relationships between paternal parenting behaviour and psychological health. Based on the review of the literature, several research gaps will be addressed at the end of this paper.

This study is intended to identify social responsibility of adolescents from both urban and rural areas and their unique predictors. Sample comprised of 935 daily secondary schools adolescents ages between 16 to 17 years residing in the urban and rural areas in Kedah, Kelantan, Johor, Sabah, and Selangor. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire comprising several measures: Social Self-Efficacy Scale (Muris 2001), Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment (Armsden and Greenberg 1987), a modified version (Afriani and Rozumah 2011) of Social and Personal Responsibility Scale (Conrad and Hedin 1981). Findings revealed that adolescents from rural areas have higher social responsibility than those from urban areas. Sex, social self-efficacy, and mother and peer attachments were predictive of social behavior of adolescents from both urban and rural adolescents. The study concludes that personal and family factors play significant roles in shaping adolescents’ social responsibility behavior. Findings imply that any efforts in cultivating social responsibility in adolescents should consider factors within the proximal context of the adolescents.

Few studies have focused on the influence of paternal parenting on adolescents’ psychological well-being. Thus, using structural equation modelling, the study sought to elaborate on and clarify the link between paternal parenting behaviour and psychological well-being of adolescents.In addition, the study examined if the relationship vary across sex.A total of 1000 adolescents (mean age: 13.91 year) from government’s daily secondary schools in selected states in Malaysia was sampled using the probability proportional to size (PPS) cluster sampling technique. Paternal parenting behaviour was measured using Malaysian Parenting Behaviour Inventory (Baharudin et al., 2012).Psychological wellbeing was indicated using two measures: General Health Questionnaire (Goldberg, 1978) and Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965). Data were obtained through selfadministered questionnaire at the selected schools. Results indicated that paternal warmth, indigenous and harsh discipline had significant influences on adolescents’ self-esteem.However, only paternal harsh discipline had direct relationship to adolescents’ psychological health.A multigroup analysis revealed that the structural relationship between paternal parenting behaviour and adolescents’ psychological well-being is unstable across sex.The study concludes that warmth and indigenous paternal parenting promote adolescents’ self-esteem whereas harsh discipline parenting appeared to suppress self-esteem.Additionally, results revealed that paternal harsh discipline reduced adolescents’ psychological health. Sex of adolescents was further found to interact with the paternal parenting behaviour and adolescent psychological well-being linkage. Findings therefore refined knowledge on the important role of paternal behaviour in adolescents’ development particularly, psychological well-being and its variation by sex.

This study examined the utility of the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment Malay (IPPAMalay) for the prediction of adolescent depression. Adolescents (N = 2040) (mean age =14.4 years), randomly selected from urban and rural schools across Malaysia completed self-report measures of attachment, self-esteem and depression. Based on exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, the three dimensions of Trust, Communication and Alienation of the measurement model of the IPPA-Malay was not supported.An alternative measurement model which focused more on common attachment factors (secure, contentment and anxious) was obtained.Structural analysis revealed that adolescents with anxious attachment are more at risk of experiencing depression compared to adolescents with secure and contentment attachment relationships.Furthermore, findings highlight the role of self-esteem as a mediator between secure and contentment attachment and depression.In addition, this study tested the stability of the structural model across age and gender and found that some paths in the model varied in which the influence of attachment relationships on self-esteem and depression appear stronger for females and younger adolescents. Implications for research elucidating the links between attachment and psychological health of adolescents are discussed.

The way parents interact with their child would influence the child’s psychological outcomes. Compared to fathers, mothers are often reported to interact more with their child and presumably have greater impact on the child.Using Structural Equation Modeling, this study aims to explore mothers’ parenting style and how it relates to self-esteem and depression of adolescents.A total of 705 school-going adolescents (mean age = 16.1 years) from the state of Johor completed a self-administered questionnaire measuring parenting style, self-esteem and depression. Results from the structural analysis suggested that maternal authoritative parenting style appear to have a larger influence on adolescents’ self-esteem compared to maternal authoritarian and permissive parenting style.Additionally, findings revealed that only authoritative parenting style had a significant and direct relationships with adolescent depression.On the other hand, authoritarian and permissive parenting styles were found to have indirect relationships to depression via self-esteem. However, authoritative parenting style had an even larger indirect relationship to depression compared to authoritarian and permissive parenting styles.As expected, self-esteem was found to have a significant and negative relationship with depression. Findings suggest that authoritative parenting style is significantly essential in fostering positive psychological outcomes.Programs aimed at promoting positive developmental and psychological outcomes in adolescents, should focus more on the parent-child relationship as family is an important foundation for adolescent development.

Children maltreatment is becoming an issue in Malaysia due to the increasing number of cases reported every year. Institutionalized children are often those who are maltreated in terms of abuse and neglect particularly by their parents. The present study aims to determine the extent to which maternal attachment (MA) influences institutionalized children cognitive functioning (CF). Additionally, the study examined whether the relationship varies across sex.Sample comprised 257 children (mean age: 10 year) in institutionalized care in selected states in Malaysia. The Malay version of Inventory for Peer and Parent Attachment-revised (IPPA-Malay Children) parent scale was used to measure retrospective MA, while CF was assessed using Raven’s Colored Progressive Matrices (R-CPM).Data were collected using semi-structured technique at the respective institutions. At the bivariate level, children who reported to experience better attachment with their mothers demonstrated higher levels of CF.Hybrid model analysis using SEM showed that the relationship between MA and CF is stable across sex of child.The study concludes that MA significantly influences the CF of children residing in institutionalized care. Sex of child is not a significant moderator in the relationship. Findings imply the important role of attachment to a significant other in fostering the CF of children.Findings might be useful to those involve in prevention and intervention programs related to cognitive development of children in institutions.

The present study aims to determine whether parental attachment influenced the self-esteem and school functioning of Malaysian adolescents. A total of 2062 secondary school students across Malaysia were identified using the Proportional Probability Sampling technique. The participants completed a self-report questionnaire measuring maternal and paternal attachment, self-esteem, school connectedness and trouble in school. A model is presented in which maternal and paternal attachment directly influences self-esteem, school connectedness and trouble in school. Using structural equation modeling, the model was evaluated and minor modifications were done in order to achieve model fit. The model revealed that both parental attachments had direct links with self-esteem and school connectedness of the adolescents. These findings suggest that secure attachment relationships promotes adolescents' positive school functioning behavior by increasing selfesteem and feelings of school connectedness, and decreasing levels of problematic behavior at school. Implication for research elucidating the important role of parental attachment on adolescents' school functioning are further discussed.

Additionally, the study was carried out to determine the reliability and factor structure of the GHQ-12. Sample comprised 386 students (female=177, male=209) who were selected using multistage cluster sampling. A self administered questionnaire was used to collect the data required. Results showed that slightly more than half (52.9%) of the respondents scored low on the GHQ-12, and a substantial proportion (47.1%) of them scored high, indicating an unhealthy psychological state. Nevertheless, no differences were observed between the genders. Reliability analysis showed satisfactory results, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.70. Meanwhile, factor analysis revealed that GHQ-12 was a measure of psychological distress, with a three-factor structure (Psychological Distress, Social and Emotional Dysfunction and Cognitive Disorder), which jointly accounted for 51.9% of the variance. The findings of the study therefore affirm that the GHQ-12 is a good measure for assessing the overall psychological well-being of students in Malaysia.

The present study examined linkages between educational goals, parenting practices (school involvement and monitoring) of single-mothers and single-fathers, and the academic achievement of their school-going adolescents. Additionally, it sought to examine the differences in educational goals and parenting practices between the single fathers and mothers, as well the parents’ differential treatments toward their male and female adolescents. Through Single Mother Associations, we recruited 60 single mothers and snowball 30 single fathers for the study. We found that the parents differ only in terms of educational goals where single fathers had significantly lower goals compared to single mothers. In zero order correlational analyses, we discovered positive relationships between (1) parenting practices and academic achievement of adolescents from both families; (2) fathers’ educational goals and their monitoring behaviors; and (3) mothers’ educational goals and their school involvement, and monitoring behaviors. Findings from this study accentuate the importance of an active educational socialization process in diverse family settings to promote adolescents’ educational success.

The study explored the extent of mobile phone use amongst students of Universiti Putra Malaysia. Additionally, the study determined personal and family factors related to the mobile phone use and, the relationship between problem mobile phone use and psychological health of the students. The multi-stage cluster sampling was employed to identify the students (N=386) who completed a self-administered questionnaire. The students were found to spend on average 6 hours daily and USD18.70 monthly on their mobiles. Text message was the most used feature and peers were the most frequently contacted person. Older students used more voice calls while females text message more frequently. Male and younger students were more interested with other features (MMS and GPRS) of the mobiles. Students from higher income families spent more time and money on their mobile phone. Additional analyses showed that students with lower self-esteem and spent more time on the phone were more likely to be problem phone users. Adolescents who spend more time on their mobile phone were also more vulnerable to psychological disturbances. There is a need to further uncover underlying factors that influence students' mobile phone behavior, and the consequences of intense mobile phone use on their psychological well-being.

The study investigates the quality of relationships between college students and their mothers and fathers, and its correlates with their self-esteem and academic achievement. A sample of 386 on-campus students of Universiti Putra Malaysia, who were identified via cluster sampling, completed a self-administered questionnaire. Results showed that generally the students had good quality relationships with their mothers(adjusted mean=3.78/5.00) and fathers (adjusted mean=3.67/5.00). Girls seemed to report better relationships with both parents compared to boys. The students rated themselves as having high level of self-esteem (adjusted mean=2.99/4.00) but, moderate in academic achievement (M=3.10/4.00). Female and male students did not show any significant difference in self-esteem; however females outperformed their male counterparts in academic. Further analysis showed that the quality of parent-students relationship was positively and significantly related to self-esteem and academic achievement. Students with good quality relationship with their parents evaluated themselves positively compared to others. Nonetheless, only those with good relationships with their mothers rather than their fathers showed good performance in school. The present study adds to the body of knowledge on the impacts of parental relationships on the adolescents’ outcomes.
