Giunta alla sua decima edizione, Manifesta - European Biennial of Contemporary Art rappresenta senza dubbio un caso singolare all'interno del sistema internazionale delle biennali. Inauguratasi nel 1996 la rassegna, grazie al carattere itinerante e all'attenzione nei confronti di ricerche artistiche e pratiche curatoriali innovative, si è inizialmente posta in dichiarata contraddizione rispetto alle "large-scale international exhibitions" che oggi individuano la sempre più fitta mappa dell'arte globale. Una originalità in parte smentita dalla scelta dell'Hermitage come sede dell'ultima edizione.

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted on cancer patients' psychological well-being and clinical status. We assessed the levels of anxiety, depression, and distress and the attitude towards COVID-19 vaccination in cancer patients, accepting vaccination at the Verona University Hospital and Camposampiero Hospital in the Veneto region. Self-reported questionnaires were administered to patients undergoing COVID-19 vaccination between March and May 2021 (first and second dose). Twenty-seven items were investigated: i) demographics/clinical characteristics; ii) anxiety, depression, and distress (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-HADS-and Distress Thermometer-DT); iii) four specific items regarding awareness about infection risks, interference with anticancer treatments, and vaccine side effects. Sixty-two and 57% of the patients who accepted to be vaccinated responded to the survey in the two participating Hospitals, respectively. Mean age was 63 years (SD: 12 years; range 19-94 years), women were slightly more prevalent (57.6%), most participants were married (70%), and either worker or retired (60%). Borderline and clinical levels of anxiety were recorded in 14% and 10% of respondents; borderline and clinical levels of depression in 14% and 8%; and moderate and severe distress levels in 33% and 9%. Overall, there was high confidence that vaccination would reduce the risk of contracting COVID-19 (70%), which would make patients feel less worried about contracting the infection (60%). Fear that vaccine-related side effects would interfere with anticancer treatment and/or global health status was low (10% and 9% for items 3 and 4, respectively) and significantly associated with baseline levels of anxiety, depression, and distress at multivariate analysis. Results did not differ between the Verona and Camposampiero cohorts. Background: On February 23rd, the 1st case of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection was diagnosed at the University Hospital Trust of Verona, Italy. On March 13th, the Oncology Section was converted into a 22-inpatient bed coronavirus disease (COVID) Unit, and we reshaped our organisation to face the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic, while maintaining oncological activities., Methods: We tracked down (i) volumes of oncological activities (January 1st - March 31st, 2020 versus the same period of 2019), (ii) patients' and caregivers' perception and (iii) SARS-CoV-2 infection rate in oncology health professionals and SARS-CoV-2 infection-related hospital admissions of "active"' oncological patients., Results: As compared with the same trimester in 2019, the overall reduction in total numbers of inpatient admissions, chemotherapy administrations and specialist visits in January-March 2020 was 8%, 6% and 3%, respectively; based on the weekly average of daily accesses, reduction in some of the oncological activities became statistically significant from week 11. The overall acceptance of adopted measures, as measured by targeted questionnaires administered to a sample of 241 outpatients, was high (>70%). Overall, 8 of 85 oncology health professionals tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection (all but one employed in the COVID Unit, no hospital admissions and no treatment required); among 471 patients admitted for SARS-CoV-2 infection, 7 had an "active"' oncological disease (2 died of infection-related complications)., Conclusions: A slight, but statistically significant reduction in oncology activity was registered during the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic peak in Verona, Italy. Current literature has paid increasing attention to the factors influencing career decisions; nevertheless, few studies have compared candidates that have chosen a nursing versus a non-nursing degree. A multicenter, cross-sectional study design was performed to explore whether or not certain individual variables and having inaccurate data about nursing as a profession influenced the choice of a non-nursing degree. Six non-nursing and three nursing degree programs offered by two public Italian universities were involved. A total of 507 students who had just enrolled in non-nursing degree programs and 202 in nursing degree programs were invited to complete a questionnaire comprising 12 closed items. Overall, from 40.0% to 57.1% of the variation in choosing a degree other than nursing was explained by variables such as age, and having inaccurate data on the nursing profession. For each year over 19 years of age, the likelihood that the student would decide to enroll in a nursing degree program increases. For each wrong answer reported on the questionnaire evaluating knowledge on nursing profession, there was a reduction of approximately six times in the likelihood that the student would enroll in a nursing degree program. Information regarding the nursing profession should be offered in early stages of life; in addition, offering accurate data on the profession is a key factor in evaluating the congruence of the career with the individual's personal motivations, aspirations, and talents., (© 2014 Wiley Publishing Asia Pty Ltd.)

This paper reports a novel fluorescence polarization (FP) chiral sensor approach based on a catalytic DNA. This platform involves an enzyme module (E), which was able to trigger the L-histidine-dependent cleavage of an RNA phosphoester bond of a substrate domain (S), whereas it did not accept the D-enantiomer as cofactor. Two assay formats were proposed, based on bi- and unimolecular strategies. The bimolecular design was related to the use of separate E and fluorescently labelled S* sequences. The two oligonucleotide strands were pre-assembled via complementary regions at their extremities. As the result of the large molecular volume of the formed assembly, the S* probe displayed a high fluorescence anisotropy signal. Upon addition of the L-histidine, the DNAzyme cleaved the phosphoester bond of the S* component, leading to the loss of stem stability and the release of single-stranded products of lower size. This was accompanied by a significant decrease in the fluorescence anisotropy response. As a simpler alternative, the unimolecular design, where E and S sequences are linked together through a loop to form a single fluorescent probe E-S*, was also investigated. It was found that the unimolecular approach provided an improved FP response relative to the bimolecular one. Under optimized operating conditions, such a chiral sensing platform allowed the detection of as low as 0.05% of the L-histidine enantiomer in a non-racemic mixture.

Introduction: Studies on patient involvement show that physicians make few attempts to involve their patients who ask few questions if not facilitated. On the other hand, the patients who participate in the decision-making process show greater treatment adherence and have better health outcomes. Different methods to encourage the active participation during oncological consultation have been described; however, similar studies in Italy are lacking. The aims of the present study are to (1) assess the effects of a preconsultation intervention to increase the involvement of breast cancer patients during the consultation, and (2) explore the role of the attending companions in the information exchange during consultation., Methods and Analysis: All female patients with breast cancer who attend the Oncology Out-patient Services for the first time will provide an informed consent to participate in the study. They are randomly assigned to the intervention or to the control group. The intervention consists of the presentation of a list of relevant illness-related questions, called a question prompt sheet. The primary outcome measure of the efficacy of the intervention is the number of questions asked by patients during the consultation. Secondary outcomes are the involvement of the patient by the oncologist; the patient's perceived achievement of her information needs; the patient's satisfaction and ability to cope; the quality of the doctor-patient relationship in terms of patient-centeredness; and the number of questions asked by the patient's companions and their involvement during the consultation. All outcome measures are supposed to significantly increase in the intervention group., Ethics and Dissemination: The study was approved by the local Ethics Committee of the Hospital Trust of Verona. Tumor spread from primary cardiac sarcoma to the bone is very rare and has a poor prognosis. Only six cases have been reported in the literature. We present a 32-year-old female patient with bone metastases from primary cardiac sarcoma.

Unlabelled: The problems and discrepancies occurring in the final evaluation of nursing students brought about the introduction of the OSCE method (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) in the University Course for nurses., Aim: of the article is to describe our experience and first results., Methods: Sixty-seven Ist year students were assessed with the OSCE and asked to perform 3 tests to assess theoretical knowledge; practical skills and diagnostic reasoning., Results: 82% passed the three tests. The best results were achieved for the diagnositc reasoning (87%) and the higher number of failures in the practical skills test (57%). The students who had previously passed the exams of the nursing courses had a lower number of failures (3% vs 29%)., Conclusions: exposure to the skills assessed and to the differences between what is thaugh in the classroom and what the students observe in practice. A close collaboration is needed with ward nurses to reduce the gap between theory and practice and the variability of assessment criteria.
