5. Post-deposition annealing and interfacial ALD buffer layers of Sb$_2$Se$_3$/CdS stacks for reduced interface recombination and increased open-circuit voltages

Currently, Sb$_2$Se$_3$ thin films receive considerable research interest as a solar cell absorber material. When completed into a device stack, the major bottleneck for further device improvement is the open circuit voltage, which is the focus of the work presented here. Polycrystalline thin film Sb$_2$Se$_3$ absorbers and solar cells are prepared in substrate configuration and the dominant recombination path is studied using photoluminescence spectroscopy and temperature dependent current-voltage characteristics. It is found that a post-deposition annealing after the CdS buffer layer deposition can effectively remove interface recombination since the activation energy of the dominant recombination path becomes equal to the bandgap of the Sb$_2$Se$_3$ absorber. The increased activation energy is accompanied by an increased photoluminescence yield, i.e. reduced non-radiative recombination. Finished Sb$_2$Se$_3$ solar cell devices reach open circuit voltages as high as 485 mV. Contrarily, the short-circuit current density of these devices is limiting the efficiency after the post-deposition annealing. It is shown that atomic layer deposited intermediate buffer layers such as TiO$_2$ or Sb$_2$Se$_3$ can pave the way for overcoming this limitation.

Background. Adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) and mast cells (MCs) play a role in immune responses. More recently, their involvement in tumor angiogenesis and chronic inflammatory conditions in patients with obesity has been discovered. Furthermore, a higher BMI (Body Mass Index) value corresponds to a higher inflammatory state. In particular, gastric tissue in obesity (GTO) is characterized by Macrophages, Mast Cells Positive to Triptase (MCPT), and neo-formed microvessels (MVD). Materials and Methods. We collected gastric tissue samples from December 2021 to December 2022. The patients selected had a BMI > 35 kg/m2 with different comorbidities. Regarding the surgery, surgeons executed a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LapSG). Gastric tissue was analyzed by immunohistochemistry and morphometrical assay, comparing “obese-related” gastric tissue to normal gastric tissue. Furthermore, tissue parameters were correlated with important clinicopathological features. Results. We collected thirty gastric tissue samples from thirty patients with obesity. Blood tests, Electrocardiogram (ECG), esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDS) associated with a urea breath test, and chest X.R. were performed. A significant correlation between ATMs, MCPT, MVD, and BMI was found in GTO. Pearson t-test analysis was conducted (r ranged from 0.67 to 0.71; p-value < 0.05). Conclusions. These preliminary data suggest that ATMs, MCPT, and MVD related to BMI can play a role in both gastric tissue angiogenesis and inflammation inducing a tissue change that could lead to gastric inflammation or cancer diseases.

Il presente contributo intende esplorare il discorso sulla salute di persone sorde tenendo conto delle dinamiche comunicative tra medico e paziente, delle conoscenze enciclopediche non sempre condivise, delle informazioni e dei servizi di interpretariato non sempre accessibili. I dati sono stati raccolti in un ciclo di incontri nell’ambito di un progetto realizzato dall’Ente Nazionale Sordi. I focus group erano strutturati secondo un approccio basato sull’etnografia della comunicazione, intorno a due parole-chiave “credenza” e “conoscenza” e facendo riferimento ad uno sfondo teorico basato sui principi del discourse analysis, dell’Health Belief Model e relativi sviluppi e limiti (Carpenter, 2010). Dalle analisi emerge un vero e proprio ‘discorso sulla salute e sulla malattia’ che ingloba una dimensione semio-linguistica e sociostorica in un intreccio narrativo fatto di credenze, corpi, pratiche, di rappresentazioni, che richiede di essere tenuto in considerazione nella presa in carico della persona sorda e nella costruzione di percorsi di cura condivisi e accessibili. What the signs do not say: implicit and explicit meaning in the representation of health of deaf people This paper aims to explore the discussion on the health of deaf people, taking into account the communication dynamics between doctor and patient, the encyclopedic knowledge that is not always shared, and the information and interpreting services that are not always accessible. The data were collected in a series of meetings as part of the project “How do you feel? Inclusive prevention and health support campaign for deaf people”, held by the Italian Association of the Deaf (ENS). The focus groups were structured according to an approach based on the ethnography of communication, around two key words “belief” and “knowledge” and referring to a theoretical background inspired by the principles of discourse analysis, the Health Belief Model and related developments and limits (Carpenter, 2010). From the results emerges a real ‘discourse on health and illness’ which incorporates a semio-linguistic and socio-historical dimension in a narrative intertwining made up of beliefs, bodies, practices, representations, which requires to be taken into consideration when taking charge of the deaf person and in the construction of shared and accessible care paths.

This paper aims to verify the effectiveness of a process of superficial protection based on nanotechnologies produced by 4Ward360 and specifically developed for aeronautical applications on composite material aircraft. The Dardo aircraft, a composite VLA category manufactured by CFM Air, was taken as a reference case and two application/investigation areas were identified. The potential anticorrosive behavior of the nanotechnology treatment was investigated when applied to the metal joints of the aircraft, such as the wing–fuselage attachments usually made of Al-2024-T3 aluminum alloy. Furthermore, the potential increased effectiveness in cleaning was investigated as another possible application concerning the parts made of composite material both solid and in a sandwich configuration and the plexiglass parts of the canopy.

Syncope is a highly prevalent clinical condition characterized by a rapid, complete, and brief loss of consciousness, followed by full recovery caused by cerebral hypoperfusion. This symptom carries significance, as its potential underlying causes may involve the heart, blood pressure, or brain, leading to a spectrum of consequences, from sudden death to compromised quality of life. Various factors contribute to syncope, and adhering to a precise diagnostic pathway can enhance diagnostic accuracy and treatment effectiveness. A standardized initial assessment, risk stratification, and appropriate test identification facilitate determining the underlying cause in the majority of cases. New technologies, including artificial intelligence and smart devices, may have the potential to reshape syncope management into a proactive, personalized, and data-centric model, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life. This review addresses key aspects of syncope management, including pathogenesis, current diagnostic testing options, treatments, and considerations in the geriatric population.

Abstract Activating G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER1) is an attractive therapeutic strategy for treating a variety of human diseases including cancer. Here, we show that GPER1 is significantly upregulated in tumor cells from different cohorts of Waldenström Macroglobulinemia (WM) patients compared to normal B cells. Using the clinically applicable GPER1-selective small-molecule agonist G-1 (also named Tespria), we found that pharmacological activation of GPER1 leads to G2/M cell cycle arrest and apoptosis both in vitro and in vivo in animal models, even in the context of the protective bone marrow milieu. Activation of GPER1 triggered the TP53 pathway, which remains actionable during WM progression. Thus, this study identifies a novel therapeutic target in WM and paves the way for the clinical development of the GPER1 agonist G-1.

In this chapter, we focus on the specialists who have helped to improve the conditions for book assessments in research evaluation exercises, with empirically based data and insights supporting their greater integration. Our review highlights the research carried out by four types of expert communities, referred to as the monitors, the subject classifiers, the indexers and the indicator constructionists. Many challenges lie ahead for scholars affiliated with these communities, particularly the latter three. We analyzed genetic data of 47,429 multiple sclerosis (MS) and 68,374 control subjects and established a reference map of the genetic architecture of MS that includes 200 autosomal susceptibility variants outside the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), one chromosome X variant, and 32 variants within the extended MHC. We used an ensemble of methods to prioritize 551 putative susceptibility genes that implicate multiple innate and adaptive pathways distributed across the cellular components of the immune system. Using expression profiles from purified human microglia, we observed enrichment for MS genes in these brain-resident immune cells, suggesting that these may have a role in targeting an autoimmune process to the central nervous system, although MS is most likely initially triggered by perturbation of peripheral immune responses.

Background. Adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) and mast cells (MCs) play a role in immune responses. More recently, their involvement in tumor angiogenesis and chronic inflammatory conditions in patients with obesity has been discovered. Furthermore, a higher BMI (Body Mass Index) value corresponds to a higher inflammatory state. In particular, gastric tissue in obesity (GTO) is characterized by Macrophages, Mast Cells Positive to Triptase (MCPT), and neo-formed microvessels (MVD). Materials and Methods. We collected gastric tissue samples from December 2021 to December 2022. The patients selected had a BMI > 35 kg/m
2 with different comorbidities. Regarding the surgery, surgeons executed a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LapSG). Gastric tissue was analyzed by immunohistochemistry and morphometrical assay, comparing "obese-related" gastric tissue to normal gastric tissue. Furthermore, tissue parameters were correlated with important clinicopathological features. Results. We collected thirty gastric tissue samples from thirty patients with obesity. Blood tests, Electrocardiogram (ECG), esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDS) associated with a urea breath test, and chest X.R. were performed. A significant correlation between ATMs, MCPT, MVD, and BMI was found in GTO. Pearson t-test analysis was conducted (r ranged from 0.67 to 0.71; p-value < 0.05). Conclusions. These preliminary data suggest that ATMs, MCPT, and MVD related to BMI can play a role in both gastric tissue angiogenesis and inflammation inducing a tissue change that could lead to gastric inflammation or cancer diseases. In countries like Denmark and Spain classified journal lists are now being produced and used in the calculation of nationwide performance indicators. As a result, Danish and Spanish scholars are advised to contribute to journals of high 'authority' (as in the former) or those within a high class (as in the latter). This can create a few problems. The aim of this paper is to analyse the potential use of network centrality measures to identify possible mismatches of journal categories. It analysis the Danish National Authority List and the Spanish CIRC Classification. Based on a sample of Library and Information Science publications, it analyses centrality measures that can assess on the importance of journals to given fields, correcting mismatches in these classifications. We conclude by emphasising the use of these measures to better calibrate journal classifications as we observe a general bias in these lists towards older journals. In this retrospective comparative study, we evaluated the effectiveness of remdesivir (RDSV) in patients with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia. Individuals hospitalized between March 2020 and August 2022 at S.M. Goretti Hospital, Latina, with a positive test for SARS-CoV-2 and, concomitantly, pneumonia, were included. The overall survival was the primary endpoint. The composite secondary endpoint included death or progression in severe ARDS at 40 days. The study population was stratified according to treatment into two groups: the RDSV group (patients treated with RDSV-based regimens) and the no-RDSV group (patients treated with any other, not RDSV-based, regimens). Factors associated with death and progression to severe ARDS or death were assessed by multivariable analysis. A total of 1153 patients (632 belonging to the RDSV group and 521 to the no-RDSV group) were studied. The groups were comparable in terms of sex, PaO2/FiO2 at admission, and duration of symptoms before hospitalization. Further, 54 patients (8.5%) in the RDSV group and 113 (21.7%) in the no-RDSV group (p < 0.001) died. RDSV was associated with a significantly reduced hazard ratio (HR) of death (HR, 0.69 [95% CI, 0.49–0.97]; p = 0.03), compared to the no-RDSV group, as well as a significantly reduced OR of progression in severe ARDS or death (OR, 0.70 [95% CI 0.49–0.98]; p = 0.04). An overall significantly higher survival rate was observed in the RDSV group (p < 0.001, by log-rank test). These findings reinforce the survival benefit of RDSV and support its routine clinical use for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

In 2022, three antiviral drugs—molnupiravir, remdesivir and nirmatrelvir/ritonavir—were introduced for treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in high-risk patients. The aim of this study is the evaluation of their effectiveness and tolerability in a real-life setting. A single-center observational study was set up, with the involvement of 1118 patients, with complete follow-up data, treated between the 5th of January and the 3rd of October 2022 at Santa Maria Goretti’s hospital in Latina, Central Italy. A univariable and a multivariable analysis were performed on clinical and demographic data and composite outcome, the persistence of symptoms at 30 days and time to negativization, respectively. The three antivirals showed a similar effectiveness in containing the progression of the infection to severe COVID-19 and a good tolerability in the absence of serious adverse effects. Persistence of symptoms after 30 days was more common in females than males and less common in patients treated with molnupiravir and nirmatrelvir/r. The availability of different antiviral molecules is a strong tool and, if correctly prescribed, they can have a significant role in changing the natural history of infection for frail persons, in which vaccination could be not sufficient for the prevention of severe COVID-19.

BackgroundCD163, a haptoglobin-hemoglobin scavenger receptor mostly expressed by monocytes and macrophages, is involved in the regulation of inflammatory processes. Following proteolytic cleavage after pro-inflammatory stimulation, CD163 is shed from the cell surface and its soluble form in plasma, sCD163, is a biomarker of monocyte/macrophage lineage activation.The assessment of sCD163 plasmatic levels in an early stage of the disease could have clinical utility in predicting the severity of COVID-19 pneumonia. The use of tocilizumab (monoclonal antibody anti-IL-6 receptor) in COVID-19 patients reduces lethality rate at 30 days. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of tocilizumab on sCD163 plasmatic levels in a cohort of COVID-19 patients.MethodsIn COVID-19 patients, on hospital admission (T0), after 7 days from hospitalization (T7) and after 45 days from discharge (T45) sCD163 plasmatic levels were evaluated, along with other laboratory parameters. Recent studies have recognized that digital ecosystems can enhance the transformation of enterprises and the sustainability of cooperation networks by enabling a regulated and governed exchange of data between different stakeholders according to common rules. Thanks to digital ecosystems, data can be effectively distributed and leveraged to build innovative services in various contexts, such as smart cities or corporate solutions. In this paper we apply the Cefriel Digital Ecosystem Toolkit approach, which was first adopted to foster digital interoperability during the 2015 World Exposition in Milan, Italy. The goal of this lightweight approach is to combine technologies for building API-based solutions with governance processes and common participation guidelines. Moreover, we argue that this approach fosters data sustainability responding to the FAIR (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, Reusability) principles for data management and stewardship. Since 2015, this approach has been applied in several projects and featured by the European Commission's JRC and the USA's NIST. The Cefriel Digital Ecosystem Toolkit approach now supports the creation of many-to-many digital relationships between stakeholders operating in various domains, allowing the discovery and reuse of digital assets owned by companies and organizations of any type and size, as well as supporting the development of added value services for citizens and other end-users.

Mast cell leukemia (MCL) is the leukemic form of SM with at least 20% mostly immature mast cells on bone marrow aspirate. MCL may develop de novo, in the absence of a prior SM, or it may represent a progression from a previous SM. MCL may be sub-divided into the more frequent, aggressive acute form with signs of organ damage (C-findings) and the chronic form lacking C-findings and presenting a more stable course, although over time, progression to acute MCL is common. The 2022 WHO subtype of MCL with an associated hematological neoplasm was renamed MCL with an associated myeloid neoplasm in the 2022 International Consensus Classification (ICC). The relevance of the distinction between the leukemic and aleukemic forms based on the percentage of circulating mast cells is a matter of debate. The current knowledge on MCL is restricted mainly to single reports or case series with a limited number of larger studies. Our aim is to provide a comprehensive overview of this rare disease in terms of clinical manifestations, morphology, phenotype, molecular characteristics, differential diagnosis, outcome and treatment. A general overview on mastocytosis is also included.

Genome-wide association studies identified over 200 risk loci for multiple sclerosis (MS) focusing on common variants, which account for about 50% of disease heritability. The goal of this study was to investigate whether low-frequency and rare functional variants, located in MS-established associated loci, may contribute to disease risk in a relatively homogeneous population, testing their cumulative effect (burden) with gene-wise tests. We sequenced 98 genes in 588 Italian patients with MS and 408 matched healthy controls (HCs). Variants were selected using different filtering criteria based on allelic frequency and in silico functional impacts. Genes showing a significant burden (n = 17) were sequenced in an independent cohort of 504 MS and 504 HC. The highest signal in both cohorts was observed for the disruptive variants (stop-gain, stop-loss, or splicing variants) located in EFCAB13, a gene coding for a protein of an unknown function (p < 10–4). Among these variants, the minor allele of a stop-gain variant showed a significantly higher frequency in MS versus HC in both sequenced cohorts (p = 0.0093 and p = 0.025), confirmed by a meta-analysis on a third independent cohort of 1298 MS and 1430 HC (p = 0.001) assayed with an SNP array. Real-time PCR on 14 heterozygous individuals for this variant did not evidence the presence of the stop-gain allele, suggesting a transcript degradation by non-sense mediated decay, supported by the evidence that the carriers of the stop-gain variant had a lower expression of this gene (p = 0.0184). In conclusion, we identified a novel low-frequency functional variant associated with MS susceptibility, suggesting the possible role of rare/low-frequency variants in MS as reported for other complex diseases.
