Social-emotional skills are crucial for preschool children's mental health and later school success. Most school-based SEL programs originate in the United States, reflecting a robust interest in SEL curricula from preschool through secondary school. While EU Member States are increasingly integrating social and emotional skills programs into school curricula, there is a lack of uniform terminologies, frameworks, and assessment criteria, necessitating the introduction of standardized practices. This study aims to offer an overview of US and European preschool SEL programs, utilizing content analysis to showcase the diversity of these programs. The analysis focuses on programs from the "EU-Self Programs for Social and Emotional Skills Development for Early and Preschool Children Applied in European Countries" by Koltcheva et al. (2022), including impact evaluations of nine programs in total. The study analysed the programs in relation to goals and outcomes, and findings reveal that there are no remarkable differences between US and European preschool SEL programs, although certain trends highlight distinctions among programs of different origins. The study will be useful for practitioners who are interested in introducing a preschool SEL program in their institution.

This longitudinal study aimed to analyse what coping strategies 8- and 12-year-old children use in frustrating situations. The participants were Hungarian students and their teachers. In the first investigation, children were aged 8 (N=52), and then they were reexamined four years later (N=45). Two Likert-type questionnaires (teacher and student versions) were developed and administered in the study. The instruments proved to be highly reliable (Cronbach's [alpha]: 0.84-0.86). The questionnaires enabled the researchers to investigate the following behaviourally observable strategies: physical aggression, verbal aggression, resistance, venting/crying, avoidance, teacher-seeking, peer-seeking, following the norms and following teacher's instructions. In most frustrating situations, the frequency of physical and verbal aggression and venting increased with age. Both the self and teacher reports indicated that as students grew older, they were less inclined to seek peer or teacher's help. The correlation between teacher and self-ratings is weak, particularly in the 12-year-old cohort (p < 0.05).

In the last two decades more and more studies have emphasized the central role of teachers' social and emotional competence in their teaching performance. In spite of this, there are not enough programs focused on developing teachers' social and emotional competence that are integrated into teacher education. This is particularly true in Vietnam where the concepts of social and emotional competence (SEC) and social and emotional learning (SEL) are rather new. In the study, we present four main emerging impact aspects of teachers' SEC including teachers' well-being and career motivation, teacher-student relationship, classroom management, and the effectiveness of SEL implementation. The article gives some recommendations for teacher education regarding SEC issue in Vietnam as well. These recommendations would contribute to develop a new approach of teacher education to meet the country's new general education curriculum enacted in 2020.

Nissl histology underpins our understanding of brain anatomy and architecture. Despite its importance, no high-resolution datasets are currently available in the literature for 14-day-old rats. To remedy this issue and demonstrate the utility of such a dataset, we have acquired over 2000 high-resolution images (0.346 μm per pixel) from eight juvenile rat brains stained with cresyl violet. To analyze this dataset, we developed a semi-automated pipeline using open-source software to perform cell density quantification in the primary somatosensory hindlimb (S1HL) cortical column. In addition, we performed cortical layer annotations both manually and using a machine learning model to expand the number of annotated samples. After training the model, we applied it to 262 images of the S1HL, retroactively assigning segmented cells to specific cortical layers, enabling cell density quantification per layer rather than just for entire brain regions. The pipeline improved the efficiency and reliability of cell density quantification while accurately assigning cortical layer boundaries. Furthermore, the method is adaptable to different brain regions and cell morphologies. The full dataset, annotations, and analysis tools are made publicly available for further research and applications.

Objective This study aims to investigate the genetic structure and characteristics of the Angus cattle population in Hungary. The survey was performed with the assistance of the Hungarian Hereford, Angus, Galloway Association (HHAGA). Methods Genetic parameters of 1,369 animals from 16 Angus herds were analyzed using the genotyping results of 12 microsatellite markers with the aid of PowerMarker, Genalex, GDA-NT2021, and STRUCTURE software. Genotyping of DNA was performed using an automated genetic analyzer. Based on pairwise identity by state values of animals, the Python networkx 2.3 library was used for network analysis of the breed and to identify the central animals. Results The observed numbers of alleles on the 12 loci under investigation ranged from 11 to 18. The average effective number of alleles was 3.201. The overall expected heterozygosity was 0.659 and the observed heterozygosity was 0.710. Four groups were detected among the 16 Angus herds. The breeders’ information validated the grouping results and facilitated the comparison of birth weight, age at first calving, number of calves born and productive lifespan data between the four groups, revealing significant differences. We identified the central animals/herd of the Angus population in Hungary. The match of our group descriptions with the phenotypic data provided by the breeders further underscores the value of cooperation between breeders and researchers. Conclusion The observation that significant differences in the measured traits occurred among the identified groups paves the way to further enhancement of breeding efficiency. Our findings have the potential to aid the development of new breeding strategies and help breeders keep the Angus populations in Hungary under genetic supervision. Based on our results the efficient use of an upcoming genomic selection can, in some cases, significantly improve birth weight, age at first calving, number of calves born and the productive lifespan of animals.

This study aimed to find SNPs that have an effect on the estimated breeding values (EBVs) of milk (MY), fat (FY), and protein yield (PY) of Holstein Friesian cows in Hungary. Holstein Friesian cows (n = 2963) were genotyped on a Eurogenomics (EuroG_MDv4) chip. The EBVs for MY, FY, and PY were obtained from the Association of Hungarian Holstein Breeders (AHHB). The loci associated with the EBVs were identified via three approaches: the calculation of genetic distance of the SNPs (Fst_marker), linear regression, and haplotype association tests. Nine SNPs were significantly associated with MY, FY, and PY located on BTA 2, 5, 28, and X. Among the nine SNPs identified, BTB-00219372 on BTA 5 had a positive β coefficient for MY and a negative β coefficient for FY and PY. In addition, BovineHD3000027615 on BTA X had a positive β coefficient for both MY and PY, as well as a negative β coefficient for FY. The identified SNPs were located near several genes that remain unstudied in cattle, which are potential targets for closer scrutiny in relation to milk properties. The markers associated with two or three EBVs could be used in selection with high efficiency to accelerate genetic development and help AHHB experts achieve their breeding. Most marker effects point in the same direction on EBVs; however, we found that BTB-00219372 and BovineHD3000027615 could be used with caution to increase one EBV while decreasing the other EBV or EBVs.

Abstract Background Injectable opioid agonist treatment (iOAT) is an effective option to support people living with opioid use disorder (OUD) who have not sufficiently benefitted from oral OAT. However, iOAT has been criticised based on theoretical and practical grounds for its dosing policies: Current regulations demand supervised, on-site application and require patients to frequently visit their treatment facility. The current study aims to investigate how patients experience on-site application and derive strategies to enhance the acceptability and effectiveness of iOAT-delivery. Methods This article is based on semi-structured interviews with 27 individuals currently or previously in iOAT in two German outpatient iOAT-clinics. We undertook an inductive qualitative content analysis, which included blinded, independent coding and the analysis of individual cases. Results Comments regarding on-site application and daily visits to the clinic were grouped into positive and negative aspects, iOAT as the best alternative option, facilitators of daily visits, and suggestions for improvement. Positive aspects took the factors stability and social support in regard. Negative aspects ranged from general inconveniences to major impediments to individuals' daily lives and towards achieving psychosocial goals. Participants reported rigorous adherence to iOAT's treatment regime, often due to a perceived lack of alternative options. Meeting iOAT's demands was eased by the patients’ coping-strategies and through facilitating measures implemented by iOAT-clinics. Despite acknowledgement of the potential detriments from easing regulations, take-home arrangements were frequently suggested by participants to improve iOAT. Conclusions Being required to attend the clinic for supervised iOAT-application is not experienced uniformly. While clinics can support their patients to cope with strict regulations, alternative approaches to iOAT-application should be considered to accommodate patients' individual needs. Examples from other treatment modalities (e.g., remote supervision and delivery services) might aid to reconcile individualisation while providing adequate safety measures and improve iOAT in the long term.

Objective In this study, we aimed to position the Hungarian Merino among other Merino-derived sheep breeds, explore the characteristics of our sampled animals' genetic similarity network within the breed, and highlight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with daily weight-gain. Methods Hungarian Merino (n = 138) was genotyped on Ovine SNP50 Bead Chip (Illumina, San Diego, CA, USA) and positioned among 30 Merino and Merino-derived breeds (n = 555). Population characteristics were obtained via PLINK, SVS, Admixture, and Treemix software, within-breed network was analysed with python networkx 2.3 library. Daily weight gain of Hungarian Merino was standardised to 60 days and was collected from the database of the Association of Hungarian Sheep and Goat Breeders. For the identification of loci associated with daily weight gain, a multi-locus mixed-model was used. Results Supporting the breed's written history, the closest breeds to Hungarian Merino were Estremadura and Rambouillet (pairwise FST values are 0.035 and 0.036, respectively). Among Hungarian Merino, a highly centralised connectedness has been revealed by network analysis of pairwise values of identity-by-state, where the animal in the central node had a betweenness centrality value equal to 0.936. Probing of daily weight gain against the SNP data of Hungarian Merinos revealed five associated loci. To provide a cost-efficient parentage testing kit for red deer (Cervus elaphus), a 63 SNP set has been developed from a high-density Illumina BovineHD BeadChip containing 777 962 SNPs after filtering of genotypes of 50 stags. The successful genotyping rate was 38.6 % on the chip. The ratio of polymorphic loci among effectively genotyped loci was 6.5 %. The selected 63 SNPs have been applied to 960 animals to perform parentage control. Thirty SNPs out of the 63 had worked on the OpenArray platform. Their combined value of the probability of identity and exclusion probability was 4.9×10-11 and 0.99803, respectively. A search for loci linked with antler quality was also performed on the genotypes of the above-mentioned stags. Association studies revealed 14 SNPs associated with antler quality, where low-quality antlers with short and thin main beam antlers had values from 1 to 2, while high-quality antlers with long and strong main beams had values between 4 and 5. The chance for a stag to be correctly identified as having high-value antlers is expected to be over 88 %.

Primary attachment plays a fundamental role in children's social and emotional development and psychological well-being. Secure attachment correlates strongly with better social competence, self-regulation, well-being and school achievement. There is no full agreement among researchers investigating attachment as to what extent primary attachment determines the development of subsequent attachments. Numerous studies indicate that early attachment patterns may change and can be changed under the impact of the environment. In a safe school environment, a positive change can be promoted and supported by teachers.

In the European context, social and emotional education (SEE) has been developed from social and emotional learning (SEL) and aims to be a core curriculum element across the region. However, to reach the current development in SEE, apart from the effort of individual nations, the roles of the European Union (EU) in uniting and strengthening the SEE concept across its member states is significant. This paper employs document analysis method as the main tool to accentuate the roles of the EU in this development process. It first identifies the educational context and policies articulated by the EU as the foundation for the induction and inception of SEE into the area, which are reviewed afterward. Finally, the current module of SEE adopted across the EU members is introduced as an illustration of the EU’s effort to bolster SEE in their regional area. This paper presents a good example of how a regional union unites and boosts their regional development in general and particularly educational innovation.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to describe the social skills that crucially affect children's social behaviour in the school. Our objective was to gather information about the functioning of social skills from middle childhood to early adolescence. The sample consisted of 7-, 9-, and 11-year-old Hungarian students (N = 1398). Based on Stephens's (1992) list of social skills, a 54-item Likert-type questionnaire (teacher-, parent-, and self-report versions) was developed especially for this purpose. The child and the adult versions share the same structure and scale items. The results show no spontaneous development at the level of social skills between the ages of 7 and 11. There was a moderate correlation between the three evaluators' judgements concerning the level of children's social skills. All three respondent groups indicated that girls' social skills were slightly more developed than boys'. Teachers, however, perceived this difference to be twice as large as the other two raters. To sum up our results indicate that for a large percentage of participants, the acquisition of social skills has not been completed at 11 years old. This finding indicates that more attention should be paid to fostering social skills early at school.

This Editorial has the objective to present the Thematic Section (TS), that derives from selected papers, that were presented during SIDREA International Workshop - May 19th 2020-2-5pm. It is structured in two sections. The first section is introducing the contents of the TS. The second section discusses the multifacted phenomenon of trust in business organizations with special reference to controversial industries including gambling and different trust profiles are (i.e., non-confidence, negative trust, and distrust, and the corresponding social categorizations).

Simple Summary: By analyzing the genome of Hungarian Holstein Friesian cows, we looked for genomic regions which have an effect on the milk, fat, and protein yield. Among the sampled animals and the investigated nucleotides, nine were simultaneously associated with milk, fat, and protein yield. Among the nine variants, two had opposite effects; for example, while increasing the value of milk yield, the other one or two parameters' values decreased. The acquired knowledge can help in the planning of breeding schemes to avoid unwanted interactions among the abovementioned yield parameters. Objective This study was conducted to estimate effect of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) on the estimated breeding value of Hungarian Grey (HG) bulls and to find markers associated with horn colour. Methods Genotypes 136 HG animals were determined on Geneseek high-density Bovine SNP 150K BeadChip. A multi-locus mixed-model was applied for statistical analyses. Results Six SNPs were identified to be associated (−log10P>10) with green and white horn. These loci are located on chromosome 1, 3, 9, 18, and 25. Seven loci (on chromosome 1, 3, 6, 9, 10, 28) showed considerable association (−log10P>10) with the estimated breeding value. Conclusion Analysis provides markers for further research of horn colour and supplies markers to achieve more effective selection work regarding estimated breeding value of HG.
