Over the last few decades, there has been an increasing recognition for seagrasses' contribution to the functioning of nearshore ecosystems and climate change mitigation. Nevertheless, seagrass ecosystems have been deteriorating globally at an accelerating rate during recent decades. In 2017, research into the condition of eelgrass (Zostera marina) along the eastern coast of James Bay, Canada, was initiated in response to reports of eelgrass decline by the Cree First Nations of Eeyou Istchee. As part of this research, we compiled and analyzed two decades of eelgrass cover data and three decades of eelgrass monitoring data (biomass and density) to detect changes and assess possible environmental drivers. We detected a major decline in eelgrass condition between 1995 and 1999, which encompassed the entire east coast of James Bay. Surveys conducted in 2019 and 2020 indicated limited changes post-decline, for example, low eelgrass cover (25%), low aboveground biomass, smaller shoots than before 1995, and marginally low densities persisted at most sites. Overall, the synthesized datasets show a 40% loss of eelgrass meadows with50% cover in eastern James Bay since 1995, representing the largest scale eelgrass decline documented in eastern Canada since the massive die-off event that occurred in the 1930s along the North Atlantic coast. Using biomass data collected since 1982, but geographically limited to the sector of the coast near the regulated La Grande River, generalized additive modeling revealed eelgrass meadows are affected by local sea surface temperature, early ice breakup, and higher summer freshwater discharge. Our results caution against assuming subarctic seagrass ecosystems have avoided recent global declines or will benefit from ongoing climate warming.

The Hudson Bay system is undergoing climate-driven changes in sea ice and freshwater inflow and has seen an increase in winter river inflow since the 1960s due in part to flow regulation for hydropower production. Southeast Hudson Bay and adjacent James Bay are at the forefront of these changes, with more than 1-month shortening of the season of sea ice cover as defined using satellite data, increases in winter inflow from the regulated La Grande River complex, and changes in coastal ice and polynya behavior described by Belcher Islands’ Inuit. In summer, there is a fresh coastal domain in southeast Hudson Bay fueled by river runoff and sea ice melt. To investigate winter oceanographic conditions and potential interactions between runoff and ice melt or brine in southeast Hudson Bay, we initiated the first winter study of the shallow waters surrounding the Belchers, collecting conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiles and conductivity-temperature (CT) time series using under-ice moorings, and collecting water samples and ice cores during four campaigns between January 2014 and March 2015. Tandem measurements of salinity and δ18O were made for the water and ice samples to discriminate between freshwater sources (river runoff and sea ice melt). We find that southeast Hudson Bay, and particularly the nearshore domain southeast of the Belchers, is distinguished in winter by the presence of river water and strong surface stratification, which runs counter to expectations for a system in which local freshwater remains frozen on land until spring freshet (May–June) and sea ice growth is adding brine to surface waters. The amount of river water around the Belcher Islands increased significantly from fall through to late winter according to δ18O records of ice. The accumulation of river water in surface waters during the winter is directly associated with an accumulation of brine, which considerably exceeds the capacity of local ice formation to produce brine. We therefore infer that brine is advected into the study area together with river water, and that interplay between these properties establishes and maintains the level of surface stratification throughout winter. With reference to a NEMO ocean model simulation of winter circulation in the study area, we propose a conceptual model in which winter river inflow into James Bay drives the northward transport of both river water and brine captured near the surface, with reductions in brine-driven deep convection in the area’s flaw leads. While past changes in winter oceanographic conditions and sea ice cannot be reconstructed from the few available scientific data, the presence of significant runoff in winter in southeast Hudson Bay implies heightened sensitivity to delayed freeze-up under a warmer climate, which will have the effect of reducing brine early in the winter, also promoting increased stratification and river plume transport.

Ice bridges are unique features that form when sea ice consolidates and remains immobilized within channels. They form in many locations throughout the Arctic and are typically noted for the polynyas that form on their lee side. However, ice bridges also provide a temporary platform that may be used by both humans and wildlife to cross otherwise impassable channels. For generations, Inuit in Coral Harbour, Nunavut, have used an ice bridge to cross Roes Welcome Sound and expand their hunting territory, though they report that the bridge only forms approximately every four years. Of interest both to Inuit and the scientific community is why the bridge forms so intermittently, by what mechanisms, and whether the frequency will change with ongoing warming and sea ice loss. Using satellite imagery, we determined that the bridge formed during 14 of the past 50 years (1971 – 2020). Generally, the bridge forms between January and March, during a cold period that coincides with neap tide, and after surface winds have rotated from the prevailing northerly (along-channel) winds to west-northwesterly (across-channel) winds. This rotation compresses the existing ice pack against Southampton Island, where it remains stationary because of the calm along-channel winds and low tidal range, and coalesces under cold air temperatures. Breakup occurs between mid-June and early July after the onset of melt. Overall, the bridge forms when a specific set of conditions occur simultaneously; however, a warming climate, specifically a reduction in very cold days, and shorter ice season may affect the frequency of bridge formation, thereby limiting Inuit travel.

Hudson Bay, at the southern margin of the Arctic Ocean, receives nearly one-third of Canada’s river discharge and approximately 5.5 Tg of riverine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) annually. Riverine DOC fluxes to Hudson Bay are expected to increase with climate change, but how this increase will influence the biogeochemistry of the coastal waters is largely unknown. In particular, the fate of riverine DOC that enters Hudson Bay during the dark, frozen winter period (roughly January to April) is poorly known despite high discharge from the large, regulated rivers of Hudson and James Bays at that time. Few studies have assessed the degradability of riverine DOC transported in winter anywhere across the Arctic, leaving unanswered questions regarding the impact of riverine DOC on the Arctic carbon budget, CO2 fluxes, and local food webs. Here, we assessed the biodegradability of DOC in riverine and coastal waters of southern Hudson Bay in late winter using 45-day incubation experiments. We found 24%–60% of the DOC in the rivers and on average 21% of the DOC in the immediate coastal waters to be biodegradable. Differences in biodegradability appeared to depend on properties of the rivers/watersheds and physical and biochemical processes in the aquatic environments. DOC biodegradability correlated strongly with DOC concentration, which was higher during winter than summer in all studied rivers and higher in the Nelson and Hayes Rivers, draining the Hudson Bay Lowlands than in most previously studied large rivers of the Arctic watershed. The Nelson River, regulated for hydropower production, had the highest winter DOC concentrations and most degradable DOC. The high biodegradability of Hudson Bay riverine DOC in late winter and high concentrations and fluxes of riverine DOC at that time imply strong leverage for future increases in DOC fluxes to impact the carbon cycle of these coastal waters.

Hudson Bay is a large seasonally ice-covered Canadian inland sea connected to the Arctic Ocean and North Atlantic through Foxe Basin and Hudson Strait. This study investigates zooplankton distribution, dynamics, and factors controlling them during open-water and ice cover periods (from September 2016 to October 2017) in Hudson Bay. A mooring equipped with two acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) and a sediment trap was deployed in September 2016 in Hudson Bay ∼190 km northeast from the port of Churchill. The backscatter intensity and vertical velocity time series showed a pattern typical for zooplankton diel vertical migration (DVM). The sediment trap collected five zooplankton taxa including two calanoid copepods (Calanus glacialis and Pseudocalanus spp.), a pelagic sea snail (Limacina helicina), a gelatinous arrow worm (Parasagitta elegans), and an amphipod (Themisto libellula). From the acquired acoustic data we observed the interaction of DVM with multiple factors including lunar light, tides, and water and sea ice dynamics. Solar illuminance was the major factor determining migration pattern, but unlike at some other polar and subpolar regions, moonlight had little effect on DVM, while tidal dynamics are important. The presented data constitute the first-ever observed DVM in Hudson Bay during winter and its interaction with the tidal dynamics.

The location of the amphidromic point of the M2 tide in Hudson Bay roughly coincides with Belcher Islands, a region where the surface mixed layer stays relatively fresh throughout summer and winter due to significant ice melt and river discharge. High-resolution satellite radar imagery for the ice-free season revealed that the coastal region in the south-east Belcher Islands is a hot spot for short-period internal wave activity. For a first investigation of tidal dynamics in the region, we took advantage of the sea ice platform to deploy an ice-tethered mooring consisting of nine conductivity and temperature sensors and an acoustic Doppler current profiler. The mooring was deployed at 65 m depth in January–March 2014 in a narrow channel between Broomfield and O′Leary islands located in the south-east tip of the Belcher Islands group in Hudson Bay (56°20′N, 79°30′W), northeast Canada. The surface mixed layer under the land-fast ice in this area stays relatively fresh through winter presumably because of significant winter river discharge in nearby James Bay. The mooring recorded oscillations of temperature and salinity throughout the whole water column, which were attributed to vertical displacement caused by internal tidal waves. The tidal harmonic analysis performed for the M2 tidal constituent showed the dominance of the baroclinic tide with maximum velocity amplitudes at the surface and decreasing with depth. Vertical displacements of water parcels derived from both temperature and salinity were statistically similar and displayed the maximum values of 11.9 m at 35 m (instrument depth). The combination of winter hydrographic data and summer satellite observations confirmed that the observed internal waves were generated by the interaction of strong tides, typical for Hudson Bay, with highly variable bottom topography south-east of the Belcher Islands archipelago.

Hudson Bay (Canada) is the world's largest inland sea, which receives upward of ~700 km3 of river discharge annually. Cyclonic water circulation transports this riverine water along the coast toward Hudson Strait and into the Labrador Sea. Yearlong observations of the current velocity profile, collected from an array of oceanographic moorings deployed in western Hudson Bay from September 2016 to September–October 2017, show that cyclonic wind forcing amplifies cyclonic water circulation in Hudson Bay and favours cross-shelf exchange. Cyclonic storms generate synoptic variability of salinity in the coastal regions, which remains poorly understood. Here we use temperature, salinity and Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) fluorescence data from the same mooring array to examine the role of atmospheric forcing on variability of temperature and salinity in western Hudson Bay. We find that in terms of the storm-driven variability, the Nelson River estuary is impacted by river runoff year round because the Nelson River flow is regulated. Our data show that cyclonic storms intensify outflow from the Nelson River estuary. This water is also high in CDOM originating from terrestrial organic matter. Thus, the storm-driven cross-shelf displacement of the estuarial water generates a negative correlation between salinity and CDOM. The upstream Hudson Bay area ~250 km northwest of the Nelson River estuary is found to be marine dominated. In this area, cyclonic storms force the surface marine water onshore, generating storm surge along the coast. During summer, the offshore water is saline and higher in CDOM than the inshore water presumably because of a marine DOM component. Thus, the storm-driven onshore displacement of this saline (marine dominated) water generates positive anomalies of salinity and CDOM, resulting in positive correlation between salinity and CDOM during summer-fall. In contrast, during winter the onshore water becomes saltier than the offshore water due to the southward alongshore transport of saline water generated in the upstream Northwest Hudson Bay polynya. The onshore displacement of water from the Hudson Bay interior during winter cyclonic storms generates negative salinity anomalies recorded by our mooring. Since there is no marine primary production during winter, the CDOM is not impacted significantly by winter cyclonic wind forcing.

The sources and distribution of sediment and particulate organic carbon (OC) to Lake Melville, Labrador, were characterized to better understand impacts from climate and hydrological changes to the system. Mass accumulation rates (MARs) across the Lake Melville System (LMS) were established from 15 sediment cores collected in 2013 and 2014 by fitting excess210Pb (210Pbex) profiles to a two-layer advection–diffusion model. MARs, validated using137Cs, varied between 0.04 and 0.41 g cm−2a−1, and overall decreased with increasing distance from the Churchill River, which drains into Goose Bay, a western extension of Lake Melville. The Churchill River is the greatest source of sediment to the system, but surprisingly, MARs were greatest in western Lake Melville rather than Goose Bay, reflecting the contribution of fine material carried eastward in the Churchill River plume and inputs from nearby tributaries. A comparison of137Cs and210Pbexinventories to expected atmospheric fallout (1.5 and 23.6 disintegrations per minute (dpm) cm−2, respectively) in sediment across the LMS suggests particles are largely sourced from the watershed. In eastern Lake Melville, elevated210Pbexinventories and marine OC point to particle scavenging of dissolved210Pb from inflowing marine water. A transient tracer mixing model was used to determine the depth in each core where >90% of sediment was deposited before and after hydroelectric development at Churchill Falls (1970) and applied to down-core profiles of OC and organic carbon isotopes (δ13Corg). We observed a significant increase of terrestrial OC to Lake Melville post 1970, which we interpret as change from climate or hydrology of the Churchill River.

Concentrations and compositions of particulate and dissolved organic carbon (POC and DOC, respectively) and aromatic compounds including lignin were analyzed in water samples from 17 rivers flowing into Hudson Bay, northern Canada. These rivers incorporate basins to the south with no permafrost to basins in the north with continuous permafrost, and dominant vegetation systems that include Boreal Forest, the Hudson Plains, Taiga Shield, and Tundra. Major latitudinal trends in organic carbon and lignin concentrations and compositions were evident, with both DOC and dissolved lignin concentrations dominating over their particulate counterparts and exhibiting significant correlations with total dissolved and suspended solids, respectively. The composition of lignin reaction products in terms of the syringyl, cinnamyl, and vanillyl compositions indicate mixed sources of vascular land plant-derived organic carbon, with woody gymnosperms contributions dominating in the southern river basins whereas nonwoody angiosperm sources were more important in the most northerly rivers. The composition of nonlignin aromatic compounds, which provides a tracer for nonvascular plant contributions, suggests stronger contributions from Sphagnum mosses to dissolved organic matter in rivers below the tree line, including those with large peat bogs in their basins. Acid/aldehyde ratios of the lignin products together with Δ14C data for DOC in selected rivers indicate that DOC has generally undergone greater alteration than POC. Interestingly, several northern rivers exhibited relatively old DOC according to the Δ14C data suggesting that either old DOC is being released from permafrost or old DOC survives river transport in these rivers.

Concentrations of redox-sensitive elements (S, Mn, Mo, U, Cd, Re) were analyzed in a set of 27 sediment cores collected along the North American Arctic margin (NAAM) from the North Bering Sea to Davis Strait via the Canadian Archipelago. Sedimentary distributions and accumulation rates of the elements were used to evaluate early diagenesis in sediments along this section and to estimate the importance of this margin as a sink for key elements in the polar and global oceans. Distributions of Mn, total S and reduced inorganic S demonstrated that diagenetic conditions and thus sedimentary carbon turnover in the NAAM is organized regionally: undetectable or very thin layers (

Marine fjords with active glacier outlets are hot spots for organic matter burial in the sediments and subsequent microbial mineralization, and will be increasingly important as climate warming causes more rapid glacial melt. Here, we investigated controls on microbial community assembly in sub-arctic glacier-influenced (GI) and non-glacier-influenced (NGI) marine sediments in the Godthåbsfjord region, south-western Greenland. We used a correlative approach integrating 16S rRNA gene and dissimilatory sulfite reductase (dsrB) amplicon sequence data over six meters of depth with biogeochemistry, sulfur-cycling activities, and sediment ages. GI sediments were characterized by comparably high sedimentation rates and had ‘young’ sediment ages of Desulfobacteraceaemembers, correlated positively with sulfate reduction rates, indicating their active contributions to sulfur-cycling processes. In contrast, other surface community members, such asDesulfatiglans, AtribacteriaandChloroflexi, survived the slow sediment burial at NGI stations and dominated in the deepest sediment layers. These taxa are typical for the energy-limited marine deep biosphere and their relative abundances correlated positively with sediment age. In conclusion, our data suggests that high rates of sediment accumulation caused by glacier runoff and associated changes in biogeochemistry, promote persistence of sulfur-cycling activity and burial of a larger fraction of the surface microbial community into the deep subsurface.Contribution to the Field StatementIn most coastal marine sediments organic matter turnover and total energy flux are highest at the surface and decrease significantly with increasing sediment depth, causing depth-dependent changes in the microbial community composition. Glacial runoff in arctic and subarctic fjords alters the composition of the microbial community at the surface, mainly due to different availabilities of organic matter and metals. Here we show that glacial runoff also modifies microbial community assembly with sediment depth. Sediment age was a key driver of microbial community composition in six-meter-long marine sediment cores from the Godthåbsfjord region, south-western Greenland. High sedimentation rates at glacier-influenced sediment stations enabled a complex community of sulfur-cycling-associated microorganisms to continuously thrive at high relative abundances from the surface into the sediment subsurface. These communities consisted of putative fermenters, sulfate reducers and sulfur oxidizers, which likely depended on high metal concentrations in the relatively young, glacier-influenced sediments. In non-glacier-influenced sediments with lower sedimentation rates, these sulfur-cycling-associated microorganisms were only present near the surface. With increasing sediment depth these surface microorganisms were largely replaced by other surface microorganisms that positively correlated with sediment age and belong to known taxa of the energy-limited, marine deep biosphere.

Sediment and particulate organic carbon (POC) budgets constructed for oceanic regions provide a means to quantify the burial of POC, providing a baseline against which future change can be measured. Here we developed the first mass balance budgets of sediment and POC (terrestrial and marine) for the Lake Melville system (LMS; Goose Bay and Lake Melville) in central Labrador using previously published data (210Pb-based mass accumulation rates, river discharge, and total suspended solids) together with measurements of %OC and δ13C signatures within dated sediment cores collected from the LMS basins and water from main tributaries and Groswater Bay. A two end-member mixing model was used to establish fractions of terrigenous and marine POC. Overall, our mass balance budgets show that the Churchill River is the major supply of sediment (16.7 ± 7.8 × 108 kg y−1) and POCterr (18.4 ± 6.6 × 106 kg y−1) to the LMS, accounting for 47% and 56% of the total input to the system, respectively. Although the Churchill River drains directly into Goose Bay along with the smaller Goose River, the majority of sediment (12.9 ± 7.8 × 108 kg y−1) and POCterr (11.8 ± 7.0 × 106 kg y−1) is transported eastward through the surface water plume into Lake Melville. Inputs of POCmar from autochthonous primary production, estimated by applying an empirical relationship between sediment-surface flux of POCmar and water depth, to Goose Bay (1.8 × 106 kg y−1) and Lake Melville (98.3 ± 4.7 × 106 kg y−1) increase with increasing distance from the Churchill River. To investigate the potential changes to the sediment load of the Churchill River to the LMS following impoundment at Muskrat Falls, we calculated the sediment increase using the median reservoir shoreline erosion potential. This approach showed that the delivery of sediment and POCterr to the LMS by the Churchill River may double during the two years following impoundment of the lower Churchill River.

Recent research has focused on the changing ability of oceans to absorb atmospheric CO2 and the consequences for ocean acidification, with Arctic shelf seas being among the most sensitive regions. Hudson Bay is a large shelf sea in northern Canada whose location at the margin of the cryosphere places it in the vanguard of global climate change. Here, we develop a four-compartment box-model and carbon budget using published and recently collected measurements to estimate carbon inputs, transformations, and losses within Hudson Bay. We estimate the annual effects of terrestrial carbon remineralization on aragonite saturation (ΩAr, a proxy for ocean acidification) and on the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2, a proxy for air-sea CO2 flux) within each compartment, as well as the effects of marine primary production, marine organic carbon remineralization, and terrestrial calcium carbonate dissolution. We find that the remineralization of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon is the main driver of CO2 accumulation and aragonite under-saturation in coastal surface waters, but this is largely offset by marine primary production. Below the surface mixed layer, marine organic carbon remineralization is the largest contributor to CO2 accumulation and aragonite under-saturation, and is partially offset by terrestrial CaCO3 dissolution. Overall, the annual delivery and processing of carbon reduces ΩAr of water flowing through HB by up to 0.17 units and raises pCO2 by up to 165 µatm. The similarities between Hudson Bay and other Arctic shelf seas suggest these areas are also significantly influenced by terrestrial carbon inputs and transformation.

The sediments of the pan-Arctic shelves contribute an important component to the Arctic Ocean ecosystem by providing a habitat for biota (benthos), a repository for organic and inorganic non-conservative substances entering or produced within the ocean, a reactor and source of transformed substances back to the water column, and a mechanism of burial. Sediments interact with ice, ocean, and the surrounding land over a wide range of space and time scales. We discuss the vulnerability of shelf sediment to changes in (i) organic carbon sources, (ii) pathways of sediment and organic carbon supply, and (iii) physical and biogeochemical alteration (diagenesis). Sedimentary environments of the shelves and basins are likely to exhibit a wide variance in their response to global change because of their wide variation in sediment sources, processes, and metabolic conditions. In particular, the Chukchi and Barents shelves are dominated by inflowing waters from oceans to the south, whereas the interior shelves are more closely tied to terrigenous sources due to river inflow and coastal erosion.

Surface sediment samples from the Hudson Bay system were analysed in order to examine the role of key regulators of arctic marine productivity — light and nutrients as affected by freshwater stratification and sea-ice cover — on the spatial distribution and production of dinoflagellate cysts. Total cyst fluxes vary from 0.2 × 10 6 to 30.6 × 10 6 cysts m − 2 a − 1 , with the highest values observed in eastern Hudson Bay. A total of 24 cyst taxa, representing 11 genera of five orders, were identified and distribution maps of the most common taxa have been produced. This is the first record of Echinidinium aculeatum , Echinidinium karaense , cf. Echinidinium delicatum , Islandinium brevispinosum , Selenopemphix quanta , cysts of Protoperidinium americanum , cysts of cf. Biecheleria sp. and Polarella glacialis in the Hudson Bay system. Dinoflagellate cyst assemblages show distinct spatial patterns revealing three compositional domains: eastern Hudson Bay, western-central Hudson Bay and Hudson Strait. The eastern domain is characterised by a dominance of autotrophic cysts of Pentapharsodinium dalei whereas the western-central domain is characterised by autotrophic Operculodinium centrocarpum with some contribution by heterotrophic Polykrikos sp. var. arctic morphotype and Polykrikos spp. Sites from Hudson Strait are distinguished by an overwhelming prevalence of heterotrophic Protoperidiniaceae cysts, mainly Islandinium minutum , and have the highest values of sedimentary biogenic silica, used as a proxy for diatom productivity. Sediment geochemical tracers are used as proxies for freshwater inputs (lignin and its biomarkers) and nitrate availability (nitrogen isotopes), and sea-ice concentrations derived from passive microwave data as a proxy for light availability. Sea-ice regulated length of the dark season has a negligible influence on the proportion and production of heterotrophic (dark-adapted) versus autotrophic (light-dependent) dinoflagellate cysts, perhaps due to the location of our study area on the southern fringe of the Arctic. Instead, cyst populations in Hudson Bay are primarily regulated by vertical stratification and nitrate availability, while in Hudson Strait the pivotal mechanism constitutes food availability.

[1] As part of the International Polar Year research program, we conducted a survey of surface marine sediments from box cores along a section extending from the Bering Sea to Davis Strait via the Canadian Archipelago. We used bulk elemental and isotopic compositions, together with biomarkers and principal components analysis, to elucidate the distribution of marine and terrestrial organic matter in different regions of the North American Arctic margin. Marked regional contrasts were observed in organic carbon loadings, with the highest values (� 1m g Cm � 2 sediment) found in sites along Barrow Canyon and the Chukchi and Bering shelves, all of which were characterized by sediments with low oxygen exposure, as inferred from thin layers (

[1] 210Pb and 137Cs were measured in 25 sediment cores collected during the International Polar Year from a transect spanning the North American Arctic margin, from the North Bering Sea to Baffin Bay/Davis Strait. Profiles and inventories of the radioisotopes were used to determine sediment mixing and accumulation at each site and to assess the intensity of scavenging and burial. Sediment accumulation rates derived from 210Pb and validated using 137Cs are between ≤0.04 and 0.23 g cm−2 yr−1. 210Pb cannot be used to derive sedimentation rates for vigorously biomixed sediments from the North Bering-Chukchi shelf. Elevated 137Cs activities and inventories in recently deposited sediments imply delayed inputs of particle-associated 137Cs to the sediments, likely transported from the watershed to the coast and subsequently redistributed to shelf/slope sediments. Inventories of 210Pbex in all cores meet or exceed the estimated supply of 210Pbex from atmospheric deposition and decay of 226Ra in the water column. This implies that in contrast to the deep Arctic Ocean basin, there is a sufficient supply of suspended particulates along the North American Arctic margin to scavenge the supply of 210Pbex. 210Pbex inventories in sediments are up to 21-fold greater than the in situ supply at some sites. Large inventories of 210Pbex in sediments along the North Bering-Chukchi shelf result primarily from focusing, while those along the north Chukchi slope (Barrow Canyon) and in Baffin Bay/Davis Strait reflect strong boundary scavenging, likely supported by lateral exchanges with deep/interior Atlantic-origin waters.

Although the presence and distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in Arctic marine environments has been well documented, the implications for the health of biota are poorly understood. In the present study, multiple lines of evidence, including site-specific effects data, were used to assess PCB-related risks to marine biota at a contaminated military site in Saglek Bay, Labrador, Canada, from 1997 to 1999. Risks were evaluated for three components of the ecosystem: benthic invertebrates, a bottom-feeding fish (shorthorn sculpin, Myoxocephalus scorpius), and a diving seabird (black guillemot, Cepphus grylle). Average sediment PCB concentrations exceeded the Canadian interim sediment quality guideline level by 41-fold. However, sediment toxicity testing and a benthic community survey showed no evidence of adverse effects. In contrast, shorthorn sculpin and black guillemot PCB exposures (measured as sum of 55 congeners) were elevated enough to pose risks to survival or reproduction. Based on the collective evidence, the authors estimated that risks were posed by sediment PCB concentrations greater than 77 ng/g dry weight for black guillemots and 750 ng/g dry weight for shorthorn sculpins. The present study, along with two parallel studies, provided information to support the management decisions concerning potential remedial action on the contaminated sediments. The remineralization of organic matter (OM) in Hudson Bay was examined using redox element (Mn, Fe, S, Cd, Re, Mo and U) profiles in six sediment cores. Variation in thickness of surface Mn enrichments and increases in Fe and S in subsurface sediments provide a means to sort sediment cores according to metabolic intensity. The data imply a relatively high flux of labile OM in Hudson Strait, weaker labile OC fluxes in inshore regions of Hudson Bay and weakest fluxes in central Hudson Bay. Enrichments of Cd, U, and Re, which precipitate in reducing sediments, are present at depth in all sediments, whereas Mo enrichments occur only in the more strongly reducing sediments. Highest rates of authigenic element accumulation in the inshore regions generally reflect the higher flux of labile OM inferred from Mn profiles. After accounting for variation in water depth, we find Hudson Bay to be the most oligotrophic among ocean margins for which there are comparable data. Redox element profiles in sediments provide a way to compare and thus possibly monitor change in labile OC forcing over different continental margins, including those in Arctic seas, where other monitoring methods are scarce.

Distributions of sea-ice melt (SIM) and runoff (RW) were determined in Hudson Bay (Canada) using salinity and oxygen isotope (δ 18 O) tracers. In late summer/early fall, stations throughout the Bay exhibited a summer surface mixed layer (SSML) 30–60 m deep, which contained the seasonal freshwater inputs. The SSML overlies a cold subsurface water, extending up to 125 m deep in the water column, indicative of the previous winter's surface mixed layer (WSML). Our data show that most of the RW remains in a nearshore coastal regime in summer, with limited exchange into the interior of the Bay. At depth, brine (negative SIM) accumulation is closely associated with excess RW, implying that deep water formation occurs when sufficient brine is rejected from the growing ice to overcome RW buoyancy in surface water. The inventory of RW at depths below the WSML is equivalent to almost one year's runoff inputs which, given a residence time of deep water of 4–14 years, implies that 6–16% of the annual river discharge is shunted into deeper waters each winter. The balance between the RW buoyancy in surface waters and densification due to ice formation appears to control where and when deep-water formation can occur. Although not directly measured, regions forming deep water are likely small ( 18 O and salinity data must be incorporated into ocean models to obtain a realistic view of freshwater cycling and its sensitivity to climate perturbations.

PCB concentrations, congener patterns, and fluxes were examined in 13 dated and organically characterized (C, N, delta(13)C, delta(15)N) marine sediment cores from Hudson Bay, Canada, to investigate the importance of organic matter (OM) supply and transport to PCB sequestration. Drawdown of PCBs, supported by marine primary production, is reflected in elevated summation operatorPCB concentrations and more highly chlorinated PCB signatures in surface sediments underlying eutrophic regions. Sediments in oligotrophic regions, which are dominated by "old" marine OM, have lower PCB concentrations and weathered signatures. For the surface of Hudson Bay, average atmospheric deposition appears to be very low (ca. 1.4 pg summation operatorPCBs cm(-2) a(-1)) compared to fluxes reported for nearby lakes (ca. 44 pg summation operatorPCBs cm(-2) a(-1)). (210)Pb fails to provide a means to normalize the fluxes, highlighting important differences in the biocycling of (210)Pb and PCBs. Unlike (210)Pb, atmospheric PCB exchange with the water's surface is partially forced by the aquatic organic carbon cycle. The extremely low atmospheric deposition of PCBs to the surface of Hudson Bay is likely a reflection of the Bay's exceptionally low productivity and vertical carbon fluxes. If future marine production and vertical flux of carbon increase due to loss of ice cover or change in river input as consequences of global warming, PCB deposition would also increase.

Elemental (carbon and nitrogen) ratios and stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) are examined in sediments and suspended particulate matter from Hudson Bay to study the influence of river inputs and autochthonous production on organic matter distribution. River-derived particulate organic matter (POM) is heterogeneous, nitrogen-poor and isotopically depleted, consistent with expectations for OM derived from terrestrial C3 vascular plant sources, and distinct from marine OM sources. Both δ13C and C/N source signatures seem to be transmitted to sediments with little or no modification, therefore making good tracers for terrigenous OM in Hudson Bay. They suggest progressively larger contributions from marine sources with distance from shore and secondarily from south to north, which broadly corresponds to the distribution of river inputs to Hudson Bay. Processes other than mixing of marine and terrigenous OM influence sedimentary δ15N values, including variability in the δ15N of phytoplankton in the Bay's surface waters due to differences in relative nitrate utilization, and post-production processes, which bring about an apparently constant 15N-enrichment between surface waters and underlying sediments. Variability in the δ15N of phytoplankton in the Bay's surface waters, in contrast, seems to be organized spatially with a pattern that suggests an inshore–offshore difference in surface water nitrogen conditions (open- vs. closed-system) and hence the δ15N value of phytoplankton. The δ15N patterns, supported by a simple nitrate box-model budget, suggest that in inshore regions of Hudson Bay, upwelling of deep, nutrient-rich waters replenishes surface nitrate, resulting in ‘open system’ conditions which tend to maintain nitrate δ15N at low and constant values, and these values are reflected in the sinking detritus. River inflow, which is constrained to inshore regions of Hudson Bay, appears to be a relatively minor source of nitrate compared to upwelling of deep waters. However, river inflow may contribute indirectly to enhanced inshore nutrient supply by supporting large-scale estuarine circulation and consequently entrainment and upwelling of deep water in this area. In contrast to previous proposals that Hudson Bay is oligotrophic because it receives too much fresh water ( Dunbar, 1993 ), our results support most of the primary production being organized around the margin of the Bay, where river flow is constrained.

A preliminary sediment and organic carbon budget is constructed for the Hudson Bay marine system based on published literature and new data collected from nine rivers and 13 sediment boxcores. The budget considers the main inputs of terrestrial and marine components of sediment and organic carbon and the main sinks (sediment burial) and losses (oxidation, export to Hudson Strait). Sedimentation rates (0.032–0.23 g cm − 2 yr − 1 ) were estimated from 210 Pb profiles and a sediment advection–diffusion model in our cores and in two cores collected previously by Lockhart et al. [Lockhart, W.L. et al., 1998. Fluxes of mercury to lake sediments in central and northern Canada inferred from dated sediment cores. Biogeochemistry 40, 163–173]. Sedimentation rates implied by the 210 Pb profiles were verified against profiles of 137 Cs and, for some of the cores, contaminant Pb. The sediment sink in Hudson Bay was estimated at 138 (± 64) × 10 6 t a − 1 by applying the average sedimentation rate to the area of active sedimentation in the Bay (~ 15% of the seafloor), calculated according to a regional sedimentation map developed from seismic data [Josenhans, H.W. et al., 1988. Preliminary seismostratigraphic and geomorphic interpretations of the Quaternary sediments of Hudson Bay, Natural Resources Canada]. The known sediment sources to Hudson Bay include river input (11.6 (± 6) × 10 6 t a − 1 ), subaerial coastal erosion (8 (± 4) × 10 6 t a − 1 ), marine primary production (24.2 (± 17) × 10 6 t a − 1 ), and atmospheric deposition (0.5 × 10 6 t a − 1 ). Based on the available data, the modern sediment input (44.3 (± 18) × 10 6 t a − 1 ) represents only about one-third of the apparent sediment sink in Hudson Bay. Resuspension and lateral transport of shallow-water deposits (primarily glacigenic) and winnowing from topographic highs, likely consequences of the exceptional, continuous relative sea-level (RSL) fall in Hudson Bay, provides a plausible source for the ~ 116 × 10 6 t a − 1 imbalance. Using organic carbon and δ 13 C values in the cores, we estimate the burial of particulate organic carbon (POC) in sediments at 1.3 (± 0.6) × 10 6 t C a − 1 , of which ~ 80% is marine. The importance of reworked glaciomarine carbon to the burial flux is difficult to estimate because modern (autochthonous) primary production provides a large source of POC to the system (16.1 (± 7) × 10 6 t C a − 1 ) and its degradation is not well-constrained. The 0.58 × 10 6 t C a − 1 terrestrial carbon, estimated to be transported as part of the redistributed sediment load, accounts for almost one-half the total terrigenous POC inputs to the Bay. If sediment and OC supply and burial in the Hudson Bay system are presently responding to the history of isostatic rebound, as proposed here, the task of predicting and measuring the additional consequences of river diversions and climate change (e.g., sea ice, permafrost, runoff) is rendered considerably more difficult.

Hudson Bay is a large, estuarine, shelf-like sea at the southern margin of the Arctic, where changes in seasonal ice cover and river discharge appear already to be underway. Here we present lignin data for dated sediments from eleven box cores and evaluate sources of terrigenous carbon, transport pathways, and whether terrigenous organic matter has been influenced by recent environmental change. Lignin yields (0.04 to 1.46 mg/100 mg organic carbon) decreased from the margin to the interior and from south to north, broadly reflecting the distribution of river inputs. Lignin compositional patterns indicated distinct regional sources with boreal forest (woody gymnosperm) vegetation an important source in the south, vs. tundra (non-woody angiosperm) in the north. Lignin patterns suggest redistribution of a fine-grained, mineral-associated fraction of the southern-derived terrigenous carbon to the northeast part of the Bay and ultimately into west Hudson Strait with the Bay's cyclonic coastal circulation. A small component of the carbon makes it to the central basins of Hudson Bay but most of the terrigenous organic material in that area appears to derive from resuspension of older, isostatically-rebounding coastal and inner shelf deposits. Most modern plant debris appears to be retained near river mouths due to hydrodynamic sorting, with the exception of the southwest inner shelf, where these materials extend > 30 km from shore. Temporal changes in the composition of terrigenous organic carbon recorded in most of the southern Hudson Bay cores perhaps reflect increases in erosion and cross-shelf transport from coastal deposits, possibly mediated by change in ice climate. In contrast, temporal changes in the northwest may relate to changes in the supply of modern plant debris under recent warmer conditions. On the western shelf, changes may relate to ice climate and the distribution of northern coastal water and/or changes in the delivery of materials by the Churchill River due to water diversion. Although the cores show evidence of change related to the ice climate, there is little evidence that ice itself transports terrigenous organic carbon within the system.

A conceptual scheme for the transition from winter to spring is developed for a small Arctic estuary (Churchill River, Hudson Bay) using hydrological, meteorological and oceanographic data together with models of the landfast ice. Observations within the Churchill River estuary and away from the direct influence of the river plume (Button Bay), between March and May 2005, show that both sea ice (production and melt) and river water influence the region's freshwater budget. In Button Bay, ice production in the flaw lead or polynya of NW Hudson Bay result in salinization through winter until the end of March, followed by a gradual freshening of the water column through April–May. In the Churchill Estuary, conditions varied abruptly throughout winter–spring depending on the physical interaction among river discharge, the seasonal landfast ice, and the rubble zone along the seaward margin of the landfast ice. Until late May, the rubble zone partially impounded river discharge, influencing the surface salinity, stratification, flushing time, and distribution and abundance of nutrients in the estuary. The river discharge, in turn, advanced and enhanced sea ice ablation in the estuary by delivering sensible heat. Weak stratification, the supply of riverine nitrogen and silicate, and a relatively long flushing time (∼ 6 days) in the period preceding melt may have briefly favoured phytoplankton production in the estuary when conditions were still poor in the surrounding coastal environment. However, in late May, the peak flow and breakdown of the ice-rubble zone around the estuary brought abrupt changes, including increased stratification and turbidity, reduced marine and freshwater nutrient supply, a shorter flushing time, and the release of the freshwater pool into the interior ocean. These conditions suppressed phytoplankton productivity while enhancing the inventory of particulate organic matter delivered by the river. The physical and biological changes observed in this study highlight the variability and instability of small frozen estuaries during winter–spring transition, which implies sensitivity to climate change.

A local source of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in Saglek Bay, Labrador, has contaminated marine sediments and the coastal food web. As part of a larger assessment of ecological risks in the Bay, we evaluated biological responses to PCB concentrations in a northern fish species, the shorthorn sculpin (Myoxocephalus scorpius). Biological endpoints, including ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activity in liver tissue, fish body condition, lipid content, and relative liver mass were examined in 35 sculpin collected during August-September 1999. Across a wide range of PCB concentrations (5.1-6920 ng/g wet weight (ww) in whole fish excluding liver), sculpin showed significant EROD induction (as much as 25-fold in the most exposed group). Responses varied directly with PCB concentrations but there was also an apparent threshold for induction at about 50 ng/g ww (whole fish excluding liver). A strong relationship between sculpin PCB concentrations and the concentrations of PCBs in the marine sediments of Saglek Bay suggests that concentrations above this threshold can arise from very low concentrations in sediments (2.3 ng/g dry weight). Other biological endpoints did not show significant responses to PCB concentrations, nor were they related to the observed EROD activity. Although PCDF compounds were present in trace amounts (primarily 2,3,4,7,8-PnCDF), mono-ortho and non-ortho substituted (coplanar) PCBs appeared to contribute the majority of the total dioxin toxic equivalent (TEQ) concentrations. Overall, the results indicate that biological responses occur in shorthorn sculpin with relatively low PCB concentrations (approximately 50 ng/g), which are not unrealistic for even mildly contaminated areas in northern Canada.

Black guillemots (Cepphus grylle) in Saglek Bay, Labrador have elevated polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations due to marine sediment contamination around a former military site. We measured liver biomarkers and ΣPCB concentrations in 31 nestlings from three PCB-exposure groups: Reference group (range: 15–46 ng/g liver, wet wt.), moderately exposed Islands group (24–150 ng/g), and highly exposed Beach group (170–6200 ng/g). Biomarker responses were dose-dependent and in some cases sex-dependent. Livers of female Beach nestlings were enlarged 36% relative to Reference females. In both sexes, Beach nestlings had liver ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activities elevated 79% and liver retinol concentrations reduced 47%. Retinyl palmitate concentrations were reduced 50% but only among female nestlings. Island nestlings also exhibited EROD induction (57%) and reductions in retinol and retinyl palmitate concentrations (28 and 58%, respectively). Liver lipid content increased with ΣPCBs in both sexes, and correlated with liver mass in males. Malic enzyme activity and porphyrin concentrations showed little association with ΣPCBs. Although similar associations between liver biomarkers and organochlorine exposure in fish-eating birds are well documented, typically exposures involve multiple contaminants and there is uncertainty about specific PCB effects. Our findings indicate that liver biomarkers respond to relatively low PCB exposures (∼73 ng/g liver) in guillemots.

Contaminant profiles in well-dated sediment cores represent extremely valuable natural archives of environmental contamination, by which contaminant sources, history and cycling may be determined and contaminant concentrations in surface sediments projected into the future. However, most marine and estuarine sediments are mixed by benthic organisms to a depth of at least 2–20 cm, which introduces significant risks of misinterpreting and misapplying these archives if biomixing is not explicitly taken into account. This chapter offers a step-by-step guide to avoiding common pitfalls and appropriately applying biomixed sediment archives to reconstructing contaminant inputs to the environment. By the use of simple models, radioisotope tracers (210Pb, 137Cs) may still be applied to establish geochronologies in biomixed cores and to validate the sedimentation rates and dates derived. Having obtained (and validated) sedimentation and mixing rates for biomixed cores, contaminant profiles may then be interpreted through the further use of models in a way that explicitly accounts for mixing. As with any sediment core, the main caution when one attempts to infer contaminant releases from deposition histories reconstructed from biomixed sediment cores are the unknown possible impacts of environmental variation and change.

Twelve marine sediment cores from Hudson Bay, Canada, were collected to investigate the response of sub-Arctic marine sediments to atmospherically transported anthropogenic mercury (Hg). Modeling by a two-layer sediment mixing model suggests that the historical Hg deposition to most of the sediment cores reflects the known history of atmospheric Hg deposition in North America, with an onset of increasing anthropogenic Hg emissions in the late 1800s and early 1900s and a reduction of Hg deposition in the mid- to late-1900s. However, although anthropogenic Hg has contributed to a ubiquitous increase in Hg concentrations in sediments over the industrial era, the most elevated industrial-era sedimentary Hg concentrations only marginally exceed the upper preindustrial sedimentary Hg concentrations. Analysis of delta13C and relationship between Hg and organic matter capture suggests that the response of Hudson Bay sediments to changes in atmospheric Hg emissions is largely controlled by the particle flux in the system and that natural changes in organic matter composition and dynamics can cause variation in sedimentary Hg concentrations at least to the same extent as those caused by increasing anthropogenic Hg emissions.

[1] Distributions of freshwater (sea-ice melt and runoff) were investigated along inshore-offshore sections in southwestern Hudson Bay for fall conditions. Conductivity- temperature-density profiles and bottle samples collected for salinity, oxygen isotope (δ 18 O), and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) analyses were used to discriminate between contributions of river water (RW) and sea-ice melt (SIM). Stations had a fresh summer surface mixed layer 5-25 m thick overlying a cold subsurface layer indicative of the previous winter's polar mixed layer (PML). The fraction of RW decreased strongly with distance from shore, while the opposite was true for SIM. The majority of RW was constrained in a coastal domain within 100-150 km from shore, which, because of high alongshore velocities, accounts for the majority of freshwater and volume transports. On the basis of freshwater inventories and composition, brine and RW accumulate in the PML over winter because of ice formation and downward mixing. The summer surface circulation results in an annual net export of SIM from the region. Residence times for freshwater components in the southwestern sector of the bay, based on currents derived from a 3-D ocean model for Hudson Bay, are about 1-10 months, implying rapid transit of freshwater. Despite the short residence time for RW (1- 3 months), CDOM is significantly photobleached and provides an unreliable tracer for RW. Photobleaching represents an important sink for dissolved organic carbon entering from rivers and could, in part, explain why Hudson Bay is only a minor sink for atmospheric CO 2 in the open water season.

This review summarizes and synthesizes the significant amount of data which was generated on mercury (Hg) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in Canadian Arctic marine biota since the first Canadian Arctic Contaminants Assessment Report (CACAR) was published in 1997. This recent body of work has led to a better understanding of the current levels and spatial and temporal trends of contaminants in biota, including the marine food species that northern peoples traditionally consume. Compared to other circumpolar countries, concentrations of many organochlorines (OCs) in Canadian Arctic marine biota are generally lower than in the European Arctic and eastern Greenland but are higher than in Alaska, whereas Hg concentrations are substantially higher in Canada than elsewhere. Spatial coverage of OCs in ringed seals, beluga and seabirds remains a strength of the Arctic contaminant data set for Canada. Concentrations of OCs in marine mammals and seabirds remain fairly consistent across the Canadian Arctic although subtle differences from west to east and south to north are found in the proportions of various chemicals. The most significant development since 1997 is improvement in the temporal trend data sets, thanks to the use of archived tissue samples from the 1970s and 1980s, long-term studies using archeological material, as well as the continuation of sampling. These data cover a range of species and chemicals and also include retrospective studies on new chemicals such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers. There is solid evidence in a few species (beluga, polar bear, blue mussels) that Hg at some locations has significantly increased from pre-industrial times to the present; however, the temporal trends of Hg over the past 20-30 years are inconsistent. Some animal populations exhibited significant increases in Hg whereas others did not. Therefore, it is currently not possible to determine if anthropogenic Hg is generally increasing in Canadian Arctic biota. It is also not yet possible to evaluate whether the recent Hg increases observed in some biota may be due solely to increased anthropogenic inputs or are in part the product of environmental change, e.g., climate warming. Concentrations of most "legacy" OCs (PCBs, DDT, etc.) significantly declined in Canadian Arctic biota from the 1970s to the late 1990s, and today are generally less than half the levels of the 1970s, particularly in seabirds and ringed seals. Chlorobenzenes and endosulfan were among the few OCs to show increases during this period while ∑HCH remained relatively constant in most species. A suite of new-use chemicals previously unreported in Arctic biota (e.g., polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs), polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs), perfluoro-octane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs)) has recently been found, but there is insufficient information to assess species differences, spatial patterns or food web dynamics for these compounds. Concentrations of these new chemicals are generally lower than legacy OCs, but there is concern because some are rapidly increasing in concentration (e.g., PBDEs), while others such as PFOS have unique toxicological properties, and some were not expected to be found in the Arctic because of their supposedly low potential for long-range transport. Continuing temporal monitoring of POPs and Hg in a variety of marine biota must be a priority. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured in marine sediments and the coastal food web in Saglek Bay, Labrador, to investigate the influence of a local PCB source. Saglek Bay has been the site of a military radar station since the late 1950s and there was PCB-contaminated soil at a beach prior to cleanup in 1997–1999. PCB concentrations in marine sediments during 1997–1999 ranged from 0.24 to 62000 ng/g (dry weight) and decreased exponentially with distance from the contaminated beach. Given this gradient, spatial trends of PCBs in the food web were examined over four zones, according to distance from the contaminated beach: within 1.5 km — zone one, 1.5–4.5 km — zone two, 4.5–7.5 km — zone three, and greater than 7.5 km — zone four. PCB concentrations in a bottom-feeding fish (shorthorn sculpin, Myoxocephalus scorpius), decreased significantly from zone one to zone two, three, four, and distant Labrador reference sites. PCB concentrations in the eggs of a diving seabird (black guillemot, Cepphus grylle) were as high as 48000 ng/g during 1997–1999 and average concentrations in zones one and two were 84 and 13 times higher than in zone four. Marine invertebrates closely reflected the concentrations of PCBs in the associated sediment. In contrast to the benthic-based food web, anadromous arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) showed no evidence of PCB accumulation from the contaminated sediments. Relatively high PCB concentrations were discovered in some great black-backed gulls (Larus marinus) and ringed seals (Phoca hispida) but appear to relate more to their high trophic level than sampling location. Those species that fed on or near the seabed and had limited foraging ranges were strongly influenced by the local contamination. Total PCB concentrations in the benthic-based food web were significantly higher than background levels for a distance of at least 7.5 km from the contaminated beach. This area is small in the context of widely distributed contamination from long-range transport but the area’s high concentrations are comparable to levels associated with adverse effects elsewhere. Black guillemots (Cepphus grylle) in Saglek Bay, Labrador have elevated polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations due to marine sediment contamination around a former military site. We measured liver biomarkers and sigmaPCB concentrations in 31 nestlings from three PCB-exposure groups: Reference group (range: 15-46 ng/g liver, wet wt.), moderately exposed Islands group (24-150 ng/g), and highly exposed Beach group (170-6200 ng/g). Biomarker responses were dose-dependent and in some cases sex-dependent. Livers of female Beach nestlings were enlarged 36% relative to Reference females. In both sexes, Beach nestlings had liver ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) activities elevated 79% and liver retinol concentrations reduced 47%. Retinyl palmitate concentrations were reduced 50% but only among female nestlings. Island nestlings also exhibited EROD induction (57%) and reductions in retinol and retinyl palmitate concentrations (28 and 58%, respectively). Liver lipid content increased with sigmaPCBs in both sexes, and correlated with liver mass in males. Malic enzyme activity and porphyrin concentrations showed little association with sigmaPCBs. Although similar associations between liver biomarkers and organochlorine exposure in fish-eating birds are well documented, typically exposures involve multiple contaminants and there is uncertainty about specific PCB effects. Our findings indicate that liver biomarkers respond to relatively low PCB exposures (approximately 73 ng/g liver) in guillemots.

Much concern has accompanied the dramatic decrease in area covered by permanent pack ice in the Arctic Ocean during the past two decades. Ice is undeniably the most obvious feature distinguishing the Arctic Ocean, and its loss seizes public and scientific attention like no other tipping point. Beneath that challenging ice surface lies an ocean that is strongly affected by other less-visible factors that also have a large say in how change will occur in this ocean. Especially important to the Arctic Ocean is its connection to the surrounding land, which feeds it fresh water and organic carbon, and the large shelves and enclosed geography that accentuate the importance of these external factors. Like the sea ice, land is changing rapidly due to widespread thawing of permafrost. For the three global risks that have been deeply thought about recently in the context of Arctic Ocean ecosystems (i.e. contaminants, warming, ocean acidification), the Arctic appears to be exceptionally sensitive, sufficiently so that it has been termed a bellwether for each. Here, we examine how the less-visible factors (fresh water, organic carbon cycling) affect the Arctic’s reception of risk and its potential to export risk to the rest of the globe. We conclude that there needs to be a better coordinated effort to collect time series for the terrestrial components cycling within the Arctic Ocean such that we can understand what is happening to the marine components.
