2. Synthesis and Electrochemical Properties of Fe-doped V6O13 as Cathode Material for Lithium-ion Battery

Abstract

Fe-doped V6O13 was synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method after preparing precursor in order to improve the discharge capacity and cycle performance of V6O13 cathode material at high-lithium state. XRD, SEM and XPS were employed to characterize the phase, morphology and valence of the Fe-doped V6O13. Meanwhile, the electrochemical performance was analyzed and researched. Different morphologies and electrochemical performances of Fe-doped V6O13 were obtained via doping different contents of Fe3+ ion. The sample 0.02 presented the largest thickness of nanosheets (the thickness of 600-900nm) and clearance between layers. The Fe-doped V6O13 has a better electrochemical performance than that of pure V6O13. The sample 0.02 exhibits the best electrochemical performance, the initial discharge specific capacity is 433mAh·g-1 and the capacity retention is 47.1% after 100 cycles.

3. Bi-CryptoNets: Leveraging Different-Level Privacy for Encrypted Inference

Abstract

Privacy-preserving neural networks have attracted increasing attention in recent years, and various algorithms have been developed to keep the balance between accuracy, computational complexity and information security from the cryptographic view. This work takes a different view from the input data and structure of neural networks. We decompose the input data (e.g., some images) into sensitive and insensitive segments according to importance and privacy. The sensitive segment includes some important and private information such as human faces and we take strong homomorphic encryption to keep security, whereas the insensitive one contains some background and we add perturbations. We propose the bi-CryptoNets, i.e., plaintext and ciphertext branches, to deal with two segments, respectively, and ciphertext branch could utilize the information from plaintext branch by unidirectional connections. We adopt knowledge distillation for our bi-CryptoNets by transferring representations from a well-trained teacher neural network. Empirical studies show the effectiveness and decrease of inference latency for our bi-CryptoNets.

4. Direct reduction of iron-ore with hydrogen in fluidized beds: A coarse-grained CFD-DEM-IBM study

Abstract

Hydrogen metallurgy technology uses hydrogen as the reducing agent instead of carbon reduction, which is one of the important ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and ensure the green and sustainable development of iron and steel industry. Due to the advantages of high gas-solid contact efficiency and outstanding mass and heat transfer, direct reduction of iron ore in fluidized beds has attracted much attention. In this study, a coarse-grained CFD-DEM-IBM solver based on hybrid CPU-GPU computing is developed to simulate the direct reduction process of two kinds of iron ore with hydrogen in fluidized beds, where an unreacted shrinking core model based on multiple reaction paths is used to model the reduction reactions, a coarse-grained model and multiple GPUs enable the significant acceleration of particle computation, and the immersed boundary method (IBM) enables the use of simple mesh even in complex geometries of reactors. The predicted results of particle reduction degree are in good agreement with the experimental values, which proves the correctness of the CFD-DEM-IBM solver. In addition, the effects of reaction kinetic parameters and operating temperature on particle reduction degree are also investigated. Present study provides a method for digital design, optimization and scale-up of ironmaking reactors.

35. Inhibition of mitotic kinase Aurora suppresses Akt-1 activation and induces apoptotic cell death in all-trans retinoid acid-resistant acute promyelocytic leukemia cells

Abstract

Abstract Background Aurora kinase ensures accurate chromosome segregation during cell cycle, maintaining genetic integrity in cell division. VX-680, a small-molecule Aurora kinase inhibitor, interferes with mitotic entry and formation of bipolar spindles. Here, we evaluated VX-680 as a potential agent for treatment of all-trans retinoid acid (ATRA)-resistant acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) in vitro. Methods CD11b expression was utilized to assess cell differentiation by flow cytometry. Immunofluorescence staining was conducted to analyze formation of cell monopolar spindle. Cell proliferation was evaluated by MTT assay. Sub-G1 population and Annexin V/PI staining were used to measure cell apoptosis. Hoechst 33342 staining was applied for identifying morphological changes in nucleus of apoptotic cell. Aurora-A (Aur-A) activation and the signaling pathways involved in apoptosis were detected by Western blot. JC-1 probe was employed to measure mitochondrial depolarization. Results VX-680 inhibited Aur-A by reducing autophosphorylation at the activation site, Thr288, accompanied by producing monopolar mitotic spindles in APL cell line NB4-R2 that was resistant to ATRA. In addition, we found that VX-680 inhibited cell proliferation as assessed by MTT assay. Flow cytometry showed that VX-680 led to apoptotic cell death in both dose- and time-dependent manners by either Sub-G1 or Annexin V/PI analysis. Hoechst 33342 staining represented typical apoptotic cells with nuclear fragmentation in VX-680 treated cells. Importantly, VX-680 inhibition of Aurora kinase suppressed Akt-1 activation and induced mitochondrial depolarization, which eventually resulted in apoptosis by activation of caspase pathway, as indicated by increasing proteolytic cleavage of procaspase-3 and poly ADP ribose polymerase (PARP) in NB4-R2 cells. Conclusions Our study suggested potential clinical use of mitotic Aurora kinase inhibitor in targeting ATRA-resistant leukemic cells.
