15. Transport in the emergent Bose liquid: Bad metal, strange metal, and weak insulator, all in one system

Abstract

Non-saturating high-temperature resistivity ("bad metal"), T-linear low-temperature resistivity ("strange metal"), and a crossover to activation-free growth of the resistivity in the low-temperature limit ("weak insulator") are among the most exotic behaviors widely observed in many strongly correlated materials for decades that defy the standard Fermi liquid description of solids. Here we investigate these puzzling behaviors by computing temperature-dependent optical conductivity of an emergent Bose liquid and find that it reproduces all the unexplained features of the experiments, including a featureless continuum and a well-known mid-infrared peak. Amazingly and with physically intuitive mechanisms, the corresponding doping- and temperature-dependent resistivity displays the bad metal and strange metal simultaneously and sometimes weak insulating behaviors as well. The unification of all these non-Fermi liquid behaviors in a single model suggests that a new quantum state of matter, namely the emergent Bose liquid, will guide the development of the next generation of solid state physics.

28. From Machine Learning to Transfer Learning in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy: the Case of Rock Analysis for Mars Exploration

Abstract

With the ChemCam instrument, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has successively contributed to Mars exploration by determining elemental compositions of the soil, crust and rocks. Two new lunched missions, Chinese Tianwen 1 and American Perseverance, will further increase the number of LIBS instruments on Mars after the planned landings in spring 2021. Such unprecedented situation requires a reinforced research effort on the methods of LIBS spectral data treatment. Although the matrix effects correspond to a general issue in LIBS, they become accentuated in the case of rock analysis for Mars exploration, because of the large variation of rock composition leading to the chemical matrix effect, and the difference in morphology between laboratory standard samples (in pressed pellet, glass or ceramics) used to establish calibration models and natural rocks encountered on Mars, leading to the physical matric effect. The chemical matrix effect has been tackled in the ChemCam project with large sets of laboratory standard samples offering a good representation of various compositions of Mars rocks. The present work deals with the physical matrix effect which is still expecting a satisfactory solution. The approach consists in introducing transfer learning in LIBS data treatment. For the specific case of total alkali-silica (TAS) classification of natural rocks, the results show a significant improvement of the prediction capacity of pellet sample-based models when trained together with suitable information from rocks in a procedure of transfer learning. The correct classification rate of rocks increases from 33.3% with a machine learning model to 83.3% with a transfer learning model.

Abstract

This was a patient with a medical history of aspirin-aggravated respiratory disease present with eosinophilic enteritis and recurrent acute pancreatitis. Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis was clinically suspected due to the clinical presentation of multiple systems and the histological appearance of eosinophilic infiltrate, but acute pancreatitis was rarely reported in this disease. In addition, the patient developed pancreatic pseudocyst, and delayed pseudoaneurysm hemorrhage occurred after drainage of the pseudocyst. The hemorrhage was successfully treated after angiographic embolization, and the patient remained stable after one year. The case was reported here because both the diagnosis and the management were challenging and worth learning.

44. Non-Fermi liquid scattering against an emergent Bose liquid: manifestations in the kink and other exotic quasiparticle behaviors in the normal-state cuprate superconductors

Abstract

The normal state of cuprate superconductors exhibits many exotic behaviors qualitatively different from the Fermi liquid, the foundation of condensed matter physics. Here we demonstrate that non-Fermi liquid behaviors emerge naturally from scattering against an emergent Bose liquid. Particularly, we find a finite zero-energy scattering rate at low-temperature limit that grows linearly with respect to temperature, against clean fermions' generic non-dissipative characteristics. Surprisingly, three other seemingly unrelated experimental observations are also produced, including the well-studied "kink" in the quasi-particle dispersion, as well as the puzzling correspondences between the normal and superconducting state. Our findings provide a general route for fermionic systems to generate non-Fermi liquid behavior, and suggest strongly that by room temperature the doped holes in the cuprates have already formed an emergent Bose liquid of tightly bound pairs, whose low-temperature condensation gives unconventional superconductivity.
