Abstract

Neutron detection technology is a powerful method for characterizing fundamental and industrial materials, such as magnetic materials, nanomaterials, polymers, and biological substances. A compact pulsed neutron source is desired, as the traditional way of producing high-yield neutrons depends mainly on large-scale accelerators or fission reactors. Here, we propose a scheme to generate a high-yield pulsed neutron source by using a > 100 fs relativistic laser pulse interacting with a micro-structure assisted pitcherâ€"catcher target. Three-dimensional particle-in-cell and Monte Carlo hybrid simulations demonstrate that an energetic deuterium ion beam with a cutoff energy of 75 MeV and a 7.23 % laser-to-deuterium energy conversion efficiency can be obtained with a laser pulse of intensity 1.37 Ă— 10 20 W cmâˆ'2, duration 330 fs, power 34 TW and energy 6.7 J. When they strike the following lithium fluoride converter of thickness 2 cm, a large number of neutrons are thus produced via a 7Li(d,n) nuclear reaction. The neutron yield is up to 109 and its pulse duration is as short as 20 ps. This scheme could be realized in laboratories with current hundreds-of-terawatt or multi-petawatt laser facilities. Abstract

A novel scheme for generating relativistic high-order harmonics by a relativistic radially polarized laser interacting with a plasma annular grating is proposed. The particle-in-cell results show that the radial laser field can drive the relativistic electron bunches to oscillate radially in all azimuth directions, resulting in the emission of strong harmonics. Firstly, the interference of the laser field on the plasma grating structure significantly enhances the radiated harmonics which match the phase conditions. Secondly, due to the common ring symmetry of the grating structure and laser polarization, the transverse distribution of harmonics presents a Bessel form, and there is a sharp bright spot in the center with relativistic intensity. Such high-intensity short-wave structured harmonics have broad applications in areas such as plasma diagnostics, high resolution imaging and detection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

By using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we propose a scheme for strong coupling of a petawatt laser with an opening gold cone filled with near-critical-density plasmas. When relevant parameters are properly chosen, most laser energy can be fully deposited inside the cone with only 10% leaving the tip opening. Due to the asymmetric ponderomotive acceleration by the strongly decayed laser pulse, high-energy-density electrons with net laser energy gain are accumulated inside the cone, which then stream out of the tip opening continuously, like a jet. The jet electrons are fully relativistic, with speeds around 0.98 - 0.998 c and densities at 1020/cm3 level. Abstract

Collision of intermediate-energy heavy ions is an important way to investigate the state of high-density nuclear matter and formation of quark gluon plasmas. In this paper, we demonstrate from two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations that hundreds-GeV Au79+ ions can be generated by ultrashort ∼1022–24 W cm−2 lasers interacting with high-Z grain doped gas. Under extremely intense laser field, strong γ-ray radiation has resulted in massive laser energy loss, and the invoked radiation reaction trapping of electrons weakens the heavy ion acceleration. However, due to hole-boring acceleration and multi-body expansion acceleration of high-Z grains, the energy conversion efficiency from laser to heavy ions is still up to 32%. Our results might provide an effective routine to carry out the experimental explorations of heavy-ion collisions by using hundreds-petawatt laser facilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
