Understanding the mechanisms which inactivate airborne viruses is a current challenge. The composition of human respiratory aerosol is poorly understood and needs to be adequately investigated for use in aerovirology studies. Here, the physicochemical properties of porcine respiratory fluid (PRF) from the trachea and lungs were investigated both in bulk solutions and in aerosols. The mass ratio of Na:K in PRF compared with cell culture media (Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium, DMEM), which is frequently used in aerovirology studies, was significantly lower (∼2:1 vs ∼16:1). PRF contained significantly more potassium and protein than DMEM. PRF aerosols of all samples were similarly hygroscopic to human respiratory aerosol. PRF particles could nucleate with spatially separated crystals, indicating that the protein matrix was sufficiently viscous to prevent the complete coalescence of aqueous salts prior to efflorescence. The effects of these differences in compositions on the viability of viruses are currently not well understood. The virus suspensions in aerovirology studies need to be reconsidered to adequately reflect a real-world expiration scenario.

In this article, a novel multiscale modeling method is proposed for transient computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of the human airways. The developed method is the first attempt to incorporate spatial coupling and temporal coupling into transient human airway simulations, aiming to improve the flexibility and the efficiency of these simulations. In this method, domain decomposition was used to separate the complex airway model into different scaled domains. Each scaled domain could adopt a suitable mesh and timestep, as necessary: the coarse mesh and large timestep were employed in the macro regions to reduce the computational cost, while the fine mesh and small timestep were used in micro regions to maintain the simulation accuracy. The radial point interpolation method was used to couple data between the coarse mesh and the fine mesh. The continuous micro solution–intermittent temporal coupling method was applied to bridge different timesteps. The developed method was benchmarked using a well-studied four-generation symmetric airway model under realistic normal breath conditions. The accuracy and efficiency of the method were verified separately in the inhalation phase and the exhalation phase. Similar airflow behavior to previous studies was observed from the multiscale airway model. The developed multiscale method has the potential to improve the flexibility and efficiency of transient human airway simulations without sacrificing accuracy.

Relative humidity (RH) can affect influenza A virus (IAV) survival. However, the mechanism driving this relationship is unknown. We hypothesized that the RH-dependent survival of airborne IAV could be predicted by the efflorescence/deliquescence divergent infectivity (EDDI) hypothesis. We determined three distinct RH response zones based on the hygroscopic growth factor of carrier aerosols. These zones were classified as the super-deliquescence zone (RH > 75%), the hysteresis zone (43% < RH < 75%), and the sub-efflorescence zone (RH < 43%). We added IAV (H3N2) to protein-enriched saline and aerosolized it into sub-efflorescence or superdeliquescence zone air, yielding aerosols in the effloresced or noneffloresced state, respectively. We then adjusted the RH to an ergonomically comfortable RH (60%). Fifteen minutes post-aerosolization, the surviving fractions (arithmetic means ± standard errors) of virus were higher in effloresced aerosols (9.5 ± 0.5%) than in non-effloresced aerosols (0.40 ± 0.05%). A virus suspension was also aerosolized directly into air within the super-deliquescence, hysteresis, and sub-efflorescence zones to assess the impact of the sudden change in RH from an initial 100% saturated RH to these zonal ranges. Fifteen minutes post-aerosolization, the surviving fractions were 3 ± 0.4%, 2 ± 0.1%, and 12 ± 2%, respectively. Survival following gradual adaptation to the hysteresis zone RH range was sustained in effloresced and reduced in the non-effloresced aerosols. The EDDI model predicted the survival of IAV under seasonal conditions, offering strategies for controlling indoor air infection.

The impact of respiratory particle composition on the equilibrium morphology and phase are not well understood. Furthermore, the effects of these different phases and morphologies on the viability of viruses embedded within these particles are equally unknown. Physiologically relevant respiratory fluid analogues were constructed, and their hygroscopic behavior were measured using an ensemble technique. A relationship between hygroscopicity and protein concentration was determined, providing additional validation to the high protein content of respiratory aerosol measured in prior works (>90%). It was found that the salt component of the respiratory particles could crystallize as a single crystal, multiple crystals, or would not crystallize at all. It was found that dried protein particles at indoor-relevant climatic conditions could exist separately in a glassy (~77% of particles) or viscoelastic state (~23% of particles). The phase state and morphology of respiratory particles may influence the viability of embedded pathogens. We recommend that pathogen research aiming to mimic the native composition of respiratory fluid should use a protein concentration of at least 90% by solute volume to improve the representativity of the pathogen’s microenvironment.

Four types of fuels blended with diesel in scaling proportion were used in a diesel engine to generate 13 different soot samples. The samples were characterised for their thermal-induced oxidation process with DSC and TGA from which the mass loss during each of three phases and 6 critical temperatures was obtained per sample. With the same samples, soot chemical structure was characterised by Raman, XPS and TEM. This analysis provided information on different carbon chemical structures, O/C ratio on the sample surface, and nanostructure (fringe length and tortuosity). It was observed that generally for oxygenated fuel blends, the soot samples are more reactive, have more O functional groups on the carbon layer edge plane and have smaller polyaromatic layer size than reference diesel soots, while aromatic fuel blends show the opposite trends. However, the trend was not distinctive for all the samples analysed. Nevertheless, the two groups of data are highly correlated which implies that the chemical structure is the underlying reason dominating the soot reactivity. Specifically, the soot samples with more O functional groups and/or C–C bonds on the edge plane, are more reactive, they lose more mass at the lower temperature range and require lower temperature to initiate oxidation.

The concentration, nature, and persistence of particulate matter (PM)-bound reactive oxygen species (ROS) are of significant interest in understanding how atmospheric pollution affects health. However, the inherent difficulties in their measurement, particularly regarding the so-called "short-lived" ROS, have limited our understanding of their persistence and concentrations in the atmosphere. This paper aims to address this limitation through the analysis of PM-bound ROS measurements from the Particle Into Nitroxide Quencher (PINQ) system at an atmospheric monitoring site in the city of Heshan, Guangdong Province, China. The measured daily average and standard deviation for the measurement period was 0.050 ± 0.017 nmol·m-3. The averaged measured concentration of ROS per mass of PM and standard deviation was 0.0012 ± nmol·mg. The dataset was also correlated with standard pollutants, and a simplified model was constructed to separate the contributions of short-lived (t1/2 = 5 min) and long-lived (t1/2 ∼ infinity) ROS to total concentration using ozone, carbon monoxide, and PM mass. This showed that the short-lived ROS contribute an average of 33% of the daily PM-bound ROS burden over the measurement period, up to 52% of daily average on elevated days, and up to 71% for hourly averages. These results highlight the need for accurate measurements of short-lived ROS and provide the starting point for a general model to predict PM-bound ROS concentrations using widely available standard pollutants for future epidemiological research.

It was found that dried protein particles at indoor-relevant climatic conditions could exist separately in a glassy or viscous semisolid state. A glassy protein shell could kinetically ‘freeze’ a particle at conditions more favorable for virus viability.

Coral reefs have been found to produce the sulfur compound dimethyl sulfide (DMS), a climatically relevant aerosol precursor predominantly associated with phytoplankton. Until recently, the role of coral-reef-derived DMS within the climate system had not been quantified. A study preceding the present work found that DMS produced by corals had negligible long-term climatic forcing at the global–regional scale. However, at sub-daily timescales more typically associated with aerosol and cloud formation, the influence of coral-reef-derived DMS on local aerosol radiative effects remains unquantified. The Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) has been used in this work to study the role of coral-reef-derived DMS at sub-daily timescales for the first time. WRF-Chem was run to coincide with an October 2016 field campaign over the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia, against which the model was evaluated. After updating and scaling the DMS surface water climatology, the model reproduced DMS and sulfur concentrations well. The inclusion of coral-reef-derived DMS resulted in no significant change in sulfate aerosol mass or total aerosol number. Subsequently, no direct or indirect aerosol effects were detected. The results suggest that the co-location of the Great Barrier Reef with significant anthropogenic aerosol sources along the Queensland coast prevents coral-reef-derived aerosol from having a modulating influence on local aerosol burdens in the current climate.

Black carbon (BC) aerosols significantly contribute to radiative budgets globally, however their actual contributions remain poorly constrained in many under-sampled ocean regions. The tropical waters north of Australia are a part of the Indo-Pacific warm pool, regarded as a heat engine of global climate, and are in proximity to large terrestrial sources of BC aerosols such as fossil fuel emissions, and biomass burning emissions from northern Australia. Despite this, measurements of marine aerosols, especially BC remain elusive, leading to large uncertainties and discrepancies in current chemistry-climate models for this region. Here, we report the first comprehensive measurements of aerosol properties collected over the tropical warm pool in Australian waters during a voyage in late 2019. The non-marine related aerosol emissions observed in the Arafura Sea region were more intense than in the Timor Sea marine region, as the Arafura Sea was subject to greater continental outflows. In this study, emission factors of both particle and gaseous phases are characterised on board two large cargo vessels operating on the east coast of Australia during manoeuvring conditions. In order to investigate the difference in particle number and mass size distributions, measurements were conducted on two 2-stroke engines of two vessels using Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) with nearly the same sulphur content. Results showed that manoeuvring compared to ocean-going conditions resulted in higher emission factors for carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), unburnt hydrocarbon (HC), particulate matter (PM) and particle number (PN), which can have significant negative effects on human health and the environment in coastal and port areas. Importantly, a significant difference was observed in particle number size distributions between the two vessels. Those observed for Vessel II were mono-modal with the peak at 40–50 nm and dominated by ultrafine particles (D < 100 nm), while for Vessel I a bimodal distribution with a nucleation peak at around 20 nm and a major peak at larger diameter of 60 nm was observed. The difference in particle number size distributions between the two vessels may be due to the difference in sampling location and/or marine engine characteristics, including age and technology. The effects of fuel sulphur content on PN and PM emissions observed in this study are also compared with the results available from previous measurements in the literature. Engine load was also found to be an important influence on all emission factors. This study is an attempt to compare the manual and automatic approaches for analysis of the morphology and nanostructure of soot particles. The automated methodology is composed of two parts: soot particle analysis (morphology characterisation) and soot fringe analysis (nanostructure characterisation) such as fringe length, fringe tortuosity and fringe separation distance. In this study the application of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is introduced, which omits the manual selection of fringe pairs for measurement of fringe separation distance and aids fast computation. The parameters which effect the performance of automated approach were identified and optimised. The automated approach was applied to analyse images from different fuels. Using the optimised parameters, the performance of the automatic approach was tested against results obtained by the manual approach. The statistical comparison between two approaches showed similar results but with better accuracy for automated approach (lower standard error) and thus validates the functionality of the proposed methodology. The application of FFT in computation of fringe separation distance reduces the computation time and avoids biases of operator in selecting fringe pairs.

In clinical assessments, the correlation between atmospheric air pollution and respiratory damage is highly complicated. Epidemiological studies show that atmospheric air pollution is largely responsible for the global proliferation of pulmonary disease. This is particularly significant, since most Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) studies to date have used monodisperse particles, which may not accurately reflect realistic inhalation patterns, since atmospheric aerosols are mostly polydisperse. The aim of this study is to investigate the anatomy and turbulent effects on polydisperse particle transport and deposition (TD) in the upper airways. The Euler-Lagrange approach is used for polydisperse particle TD prediction in both laminar and turbulent conditions. Various anatomical models are adopted to investigate the polydisperse particle TD under different flow conditions. Rossin-Rammler diameter distribution is used for the distribution of the initial particle diameter. The numerical results illustrate that airflow rate distribution at the right lung of a realistic model is higher than a non-realistic model. The CFD study also shows that turbulence effects on deposition are higher for larger diameter particles than with particles of smaller diameter. A significant amount of polydisperse particles are also shown to be deposited at the tracheal wall for CT-based model, whereas particles are mostly deposited at the carinal angle for the non-realistic model. A comprehensive, polydisperse particle TD analysis would enhance understanding of the realistic deposition pattern and decrease unwanted therapeutic aerosol deposition at the extrathoracic airways.

This investigation explored engine performance, combustion and exhaust emissions with a new series of fuels for compression ignition engine. Three blends were formulated using diesel, tea tree oil and diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (DGM). Low grade tea tree oil is considered as waste, which was used as fuel in this investigation. DGM was blended with tea tree oil and diesel as an additive for its high oxygen content and cetane number. Diesel was chosen for comparison purposes. The three blends examined in this study were, 70-30-0, 70-20-10 and 70-10-20 in ratios of diesel-tea tree oil-DGM. A six-cylinder, four-stroke, turbocharged diesel engine was used in this experiment. Four different loads of 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% and 1500 revolutions per minute (rpm) were selected for the experiments. Engine performance parameters like efficiency, power, mean effective pressure and specific fuel consumption were considered. In-cylinder pressure, the rate of heat release, peak and boost pressure were considered for combustion parameters. Carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM) and particulate number (PN) were considered for emission parameters. A maximum of 70% PM, 54% PN and 33% CO reductions were observed with three blends. However, 16% higher NOx emissions were observed with the blends.

Diesel emissions contain high levels of particulate matter (PM) which can have a severe effect on the airways. Diesel PM can be effectively reduced with the substitution of diesel fuel with a biofuel such as vegetable oil. Unfortunately, very little is known about the cellular effects of these alternative diesel emissions on the airways. The aim of this study was to test whether coconut oil substitution in diesel fuel reduces the adverse effect of diesel emission exposure on human bronchial epithelial cells. Human bronchial epithelial cells were cultured at air-liquid interface for 7 days and exposed to diesel engine emissions from conventional diesel fuel or diesel fuel blended with raw coconut oil at low (10%), moderate (15%) and high (20%) proportions. Cell viability, inflammation, antioxidant production and xenobiotic metabolism were measured. Compared to conventional diesel, low fractional coconut oil substitution (10% and 15%) reduced inflammation and increased antioxidant expression, whereas higher fractional coconut oil (20%) reduced cell viability and increased inflammation. Therefore, cellular responses after exposure to alternative diesel emission are dependent on fuel composition.

The share of biofuels in the fuel market has increased over the last several decades. This is related to their potential to reduce the emissions including particulate matter. It has been frequently reported that the fuel oxygen content is the main reason for the reduction in particulate matter emissions. To understand the effect of fuel oxygen content on morphology and nanostructure characteristics of soot particles, different fuels such as diesel, coconut biodiesel and triacetin were tested in a diesel engine with various mixing proportions. The fuel blending was done in such a way that overall oxygen content of fuel was kept in range of 0% to 14% (wt.%). The soot particles were sampled from the engine exhaust system and analysed with a transmission electron microscope (TEM) at low and high spatial resolution. The TEM images were post-processed with the help of an in-house developed image analysis program to determine the morphology and nanostructure characteristics. The results show that oxygenated fuel blends emit smaller sized soot particles forming compact aggregates. The investigation of the internal structure of soot particles show disordered arrangement of graphene layers for fuels up to 11.01% fuel oxygen content (pure biodiesel); however, the opposite trend was observed for fuel blends with triacetin which could be related to the presence of oxygen in a different chemical functional group.

The chemical composition and evolution of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in the atmosphere represents one of the largest uncertainties in our current understanding of air quality. Despite vast research, the toxicological mechanisms relating to adverse human health effects upon exposure to particulate matter are still poorly understood. Particle-bound reactive oxygen species (ROS) may substantially contribute to observed health effects by influencing aerosol oxidative potential (OP). The role of radicals in both the formation and aging of aerosol, as well as their contribution to aerosol OP, remains highly uncertain. The profluorescent spin trap BPEAnit (9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracenenitroxide), previously utilized to study combustion-generated aerosol, has been applied to provide the first estimate of particle-bound radical concentrations in SOA. We demonstrate that SOA from different atmospherically important VOC precursors have different particle-bound radical concentrations, estimated for the ozonolysis of α-pinene (0.020 ± 0.0050 nmol/μg), limonene (0.0059 ± 0.0010 nmol/μg), and β-caryophyllene (0.0025 ± 0.00080 nmol/μg), highlighting the potential importance of OH-initiated formation of particle-bound organic radicals. Additionally, the lifetime of particle-bound radical species in α-pinene SOA was estimated, and a pseudo-first-order rate constant of k = 7.3 ± 1.7 × 10–3 s–1 was derived, implying a radical lifetime on the order of minutes.

This study presents an overview of the context and global impacts of recent International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations on the marine fuel oil refining industry, future marine fuel mix and ship emissions. IMO limited marine fuel sulphur content in both Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECAs) and Nitrogen Oxide Emission Control Areas (NECAs) to 0.1% (wt. %) by 2015, and to 0.5% globally by 2020. It is anticipated that the newly implemented IMO regulations will help to mitigate negative impact of ship emissions on public health and environment. IMO regulations require significant changes to refineries to increase the production of low sulphur fuels through a shift to distillates, use of novel deep desulphurization techniques, or fuel blending. Changes to the refinery processes can bring forth increases in greenhouse gas emissions and high capital investments. Alternative fuels will need to meet the required reduction of air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions in coastal areas. Alternative marine fuels consisting of liquefied nature gas (LNG) and biofuel may be suitable fuels to meet both targets. These two fuels are predicted to account for 50% of shipping energy demand by 2050, while the remainder will still be supplied by conventional heavy fuel oil (HFO)/marine gas oil (MGO). Switching to low sulphur fuels as a results of the new IMO regulations has led to measureable reductions in ship emissions generally. This fuel switching also resulted in changes in engine emission characteristics, especially on particulate matter chemical composition.

This study reports on a turbo-charged diesel engine performance, combustion and exhaust emissions when fuelled with three non-edible biodiesel blends, a neat waste cooking biodiesel (WBD100) and a neat reference diesel (D100). Waste cooking biodiesel was chosen as the non-edible biodiesel for its availability and low cost. Diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (DGM) was introduced as an additive owing to its superior ignitability and high oxygen content. The three blends tested in this investigation were 70/30/0, 70/20/10 and 70/10/20 in proportions of diesel/waste cooking biodiesel/DGM. In all cases, a commercial diesel was taken as the reference fuel for comparative discussion about parameters of the engine performance, combustion and exhaust emissions. A fully-instrumented, 4-stroke, 6-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine was utilised for the experiments. Without significantly deteriorating engine performance, the three biodiesel blends and WBD100 reduced both particulate matter (PM) and particulate number (PN) emissions remarkably with the expected increase of nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions.

Essential oils are mostly used in aromatherapy and their popularity has grown rapidly for the last decade. However, the industry has a substantial low-value waste stream, because downstream industries require therapeutic-grade oil. These waste stream oils can be used in the transport and agricultural sectors. This study investigated the influence of various essential oil blends on the emission characteristics of a multi-cylinder diesel engine. Orange, eucalyptus and tea tree oil were blended with diesel at 5% and 10% by volume, neat diesel and a 10% waste cooking biodiesel-diesel blend were also tested for comparison. The major constituents of orange oil and eucalyptus oil are limonene and 1,8-cineole respectively, and the main constituents of tea tree oil are terpinen-4-ol, γ-terpinene and α-terpinene. Orange oil contains negligible amounts of oxygen, whereas eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil contain 8.4% and 5.4% respectively. Compared to neat diesel, all the essential oil blends exhibited similar or slightly higher density, similar heating value, lower viscosity, flash point, and cetane number, and higher surface tension. However, only orange oil and eucalyptus oil blends exhibited oxidation stability above the minimum standards. Interestingly, blending eucalyptus oil increased the oxidation stability of diesel. Tea tree oil blends emitted the most carbon monoxide (CO) while orange oil and eucalyptus oil blends emitted the least CO and nitrogen oxide (NOX). Although eucalyptus oil and tea tree oil blends contain similar levels of oxygen, they exhibited opposite NOX emission trends, which might be attributed to the dissimilar and complex bonding of oxygen molecules into the structures. Particle number emission of essential oils were load dependent, however, all essential oil belnds emitted higher particulate mass at all loads.

Weather and climate models are challenged by uncertainties and biases in simulating Southern Ocean (SO) radiative fluxes that trace to a poor understanding of cloud, aerosol, precipitation, and radiative processes, and their interactions. Projects between 2016 and 2018 used in situ probes, radar, lidar, and other instruments to make comprehensive measurements of thermodynamics, surface radiation, cloud, precipitation, aerosol, cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), and ice nucleating particles over the SO cold waters, and in ubiquitous liquid and mixed-phase clouds common to this pristine environment. Data including soundings were collected from the NSF–NCAR G-V aircraft flying north–south gradients south of Tasmania, at Macquarie Island, and on the R/V Investigator and RSV Aurora Australis. Synergistically these data characterize boundary layer and free troposphere environmental properties, and represent the most comprehensive data of this type available south of the oceanic polar front, in the cold sector of SO cyclones, and across seasons. Results show largely pristine environments with numerous small and few large aerosols above cloud, suggesting new particle formation and limited long-range transport from continents, high variability in CCN and cloud droplet concentrations, and ubiquitous supercooled water in thin, multilayered clouds, often with small-scale generating cells near cloud top. These observations demonstrate how cloud properties depend on aerosols while highlighting the importance of dynamics and turbulence that likely drive heterogeneity of cloud phase. Satellite retrievals confirmed low clouds were responsible for radiation biases. The combination of models and observations is examining how aerosols and meteorology couple to control SO water and energy budgets.

In numerous epidemiological studies, exposure to particulate matter (PM) has been associated with negative health outcomes. It has been established so far that the detrimental health effects of particles cannot be explained by a single parameter, such as particle mass, as the complexity of chemical composition and reactivity of particles are not always represented by the mass loadings. The oxidative potential (OP) of aerosol particles represents a promising indicator of their potential toxicity. To develop strategies and regulations at improving the air quality, an increasing number of studies are focused on the application of source apportionment (SA) of PM., while a limited number of SA investigations have been applied to OP. In this review previous research of SA of atmospheric PM oxidative potential and proposed guidelines for future studies are summarized. Most of the research studies were carried out in an urban area and focused on PM2.5, while few studies examined other PM fractions. It was noted that the three dominant contributors to OP were biomass burning (9-97%), secondary aerosols (6-67%) and traffic/vehicles (16-88%). The presence of other factors that contributed to the increase of OP to a lesser extent depended on the location and season. Further, a considerable discrepancy in the contribution of various OP vs. PM sources was discovered using SA models. Because of this, the use of SA is not equivalent when considering the mass of PM and its toxicity.

Light-duty diesel vehicles contribute significantly to urban air pollution. Laboratory-based standard driving test cycles do not take into account external driving factors, which greatly impact the vehicle emissions compared to the real-world driving emission (RDE) measurements. This results in higher emission levels obtained by RDE tests, compared to the standard approaches. In the current study, an RDE measurement campaign has been conducted in Brisbane city traffic using a portable emission measurement system (PEMS). Thirty drivers with a wide variety of driving experiences participated using a Hyundai iLoad van in a custom test route. RDEs and driving parameters were recorded during each trip. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to investigate the relationship between driving dynamics and vehicle emissions. Also, the impact of different trips, driving time, and driving experience on driving behaviour and emissions. Route familiarity, traffic density, and driving experience have a strong impact on driving behaviour and emissions. The driver's response to changing traffic, unknown routes, and vehicles significantly vary among different drivers which results in a high volume of transient events (frequent acceleration and deceleration). Transient events are very common in city driving which has a strong correlation to vehicle emissions.

In this work we explore the relationship between particulate matter (PM) and small ion (SI) concentration in a typical indoor elementary school environment. A range of important air quality parameters (radon, PM, SI, temperature, humidity) were measured in two elementary schools located in urban background and suburban area in Belgrade city, Serbia. We focus on an interplay between concentrations of radon, small ions (SI) and particulate matter (PM) and for this purpose, we utilize two approaches. The first approach is based on a balance equation which is used to derive approximate relation between concentration of small ions and particulate matter. The form of the obtained relation suggests physics based linear regression modelling. The second approach is more data driven and utilizes machine learning techniques, and in this approach, we develop a more complex statistical model. This paper attempts to put together these two methods into a practical statistical modelling approach that would be more useful than either approach alone. The artificial neural network model enabled prediction of small ion concentration based on radon and particulate matter measurements. Models achieved median absolute error of about 40 ions/cm3 and explained variance of about 0.7. This could potentially enable more simple measurement campaigns, where a smaller number of parameters would be measured, but still allowing for similar insights. © 2020 by the authors.

This study investigates the morphology and nanostructure of soot particles during cold-start and hot-start engine operation of a diesel engine using oxygenated fuels. The soot samples were analysed using transmission electron microscopy. The oxygen content in the fuel was varied between 0 and 12%. The results showed that the primary particles during cold-start have significantly smaller size when compared to hot-start engine operation. The addition of oxygenated fuels also resulted in smaller sized primary particles. Smaller radius of gyration and higher fractal dimension of soot aggregates during cold-start would mean smaller aggregate size with a more compact structure. Shorter fringes with a higher inter-fringe spacing for cold-start would mean lower graphitisation of soot particles that could be related to higher oxidation reactivity of soot particles.

Atmospheric semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) are complex in their chemical and toxicological characteristics with sources from both primary combustion emissions and secondary oxygenated aerosol formation processes. In this study, thermal desorption of PM2.5 in association with online measurement of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was carried out to study the role of SVOCs in its gas-particle partitioning. The mass concentrations of PM2.5, black carbon (BC) and p-PAHs downstream of a thermodenuder were measured online at different temperature settings (25, 50, 100, and 200 °C) to characterize PM physico-chemical properties. While the mass concentrations of PM2.5 and p-PAHs reduced to ∼34% at 200 °C compared to that in ambient temperature, BC mass concentration has decreased by 30% at the highest temperature. Furthermore, the submicron particle size distribution showed reduced particle number concentration in Aitken mode at 200 °C heating. The ROS, measured by Particle-into-Nitroxide-Quencher, also showed reduction and followed a similar trend with PM measurements, where the total ROS decreased by 12%, 31%, and 53% at 50 °C, 100 °C, and 200 °C, respectively, compared to the ambient sample. When a HEPA filter was included in the upstream of samples, 39% of gas phase ROS reduction was observed at 200 °C. This provided a good estimate of the contribution of SVOCs in ROS production in PM2.5, where decreased SVOCs concentration at 200 °C increased the percentage of particle surface area. This concludes that the surface chemistry of these organic coatings on the particles is important for assessing the health impacts of PM.

The International Agency of Research on Cancer identifies high-temperature frying, which features prominently in Chinese cooking, as producing group 2A carcinogens. This study simultaneously characterized particulate and gaseous-phase cooking emissions, monitored their reactive oxygen species (ROS) concentrations, and evaluated their impact on genetic damage and expression in exposed human bronchial epithelial cells. Five types of edible oil, three kinds of seasonings, and two dishes were assessed. Among tested edible oils, heating of soybean oil released the largest particle number concentration (2.09 × 1013 particles/(g cooking material and oil)·h) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions (12103.42 μg/(g cooking material and oil)·h). Heating of lard produced the greatest particle mass concentration (0.75 mg/(g cooking material and oil)·h). The main finding was that sunflower and rapeseed oils produced the highest ROS concentrations (80.48 and 71.75 nmol/(g cooking material and oil)·h, respectively). ROS formation most likely occurred during the autoxidation of both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. Among all the tested parameters, only ROS concentrations exhibited consistency with cell viability and showed significant correlations with the expression levels of CYP1A1, HIF-1a, and especially with IL-8 (the marker for oxidative stress within the cell). These findings indicate that ROS concentration is potentially a suitable metric for direct assessment of exposure levels and potential toxicity.

This study investigates the effect of engine temperature during cold start and hot start engine operation on particulate matter emissions and engine performance parameters. In addition to a fundamental study on cold start operation and the effect of lubricating oil during combustion, this research introduces important knowledge about regulated particulate number emissions and particulate size distribution during cold start, which is an emerging area in the literature. A further aspect of this work is to introduce waste lubricating oil as a fuel. By using diesel and two blends of diesel with 1 and 5% waste lubricating oil in a 6-cylinder turbocharged engine on a cold start custom test, this investigation studied particle number (PN), friction losses and combustion instability with diesel and waste lubricating oil fuel blends. In order to understand and explain the results the following were also studied: particle size distribution and median diameter, engine oil, coolant and exhaust gas temperatures, start of injection, friction mean effective pressure (FMEP), mechanical efficiency, coefficient of variation (CoV) of engine speed, CoV of indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) and maximum rate of pressure rise were also studied. The results showed that during cold start the increase in engine temperature was associated with an increase in PN and size of particles, and a decrease in FMEP and maximum rate of pressure rise. Compared to a warmed up engine, during cold start, PN, start of injection and mechanical efficiency were lower; while FMEP, CoV of IMEP and maximum rate of pressure rise were higher. Adding 5% waste lubricating oil to the fuel was associated with a decrease in PN (during cold start), decreased particle size, maximum rate of pressure rise and CoV of IMEP and was associated with an increase in PN and nucleation mode particles (during hot start) and FMEP.

Particle emission characteristics and engine performance were investigated from an auxiliary, heavy duty, six-cylinder, turbocharged and after-cooled diesel engine with a common rail injection system using spiked fuels with different combinations of sulphur (S) and vanadium (V) spiking. The effect of fuel S content on both particle number (PN) and mass (PM) was clearly observed in this study. Higher PN and PM were observed for fuels with higher S contents at all engine load conditions. This study also found a correlation between fuel S content and nucleation mode particle number concentration which have more harmful impact on human health than larger particles. The highest PN and PM were observed at partial load conditions. In addition, S in fuel resulted in higher viscosity of spiked fuels, which led to lower engine blow-by. Fuel V content was observed in this study, evidencing that it had no clear effect on engine performance and emissions. Increased engine load also resulted in higher engine blow-by. The lower peak of in-cylinder pressure observed at both pre-mixed and diffusion combustion phases with the spiked fuels may be associated with the lower energy content in the fuel blends compared to diesel fuel.

Mosquito-repellent incense is popular for dispelling mosquitos indoors in Asia, Africa and South America. However, the released large amounts of particulate and gaseous pollutants have a negative effect on human health. We conducted real-time measurements in laboratory chamber to characterize the particulate matter, volatile organic species (VOCs), reactive oxygen species (ROS) released from the Disc and Liquid mosquito-repellent incenses using. And further to evaluate the secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation potential indoors attributed to the main VOCs species and the health exposure risk. Results show that the disk type produces more particles but less VOCs. The particle number concentration produced by the disc and the liquid types were 130085 part/cm3 and 7963 part/cm3, respectively. The former one concentrated at the size bins below 100 nm, in comparison with the latter one mainly between 100 and 500 nm. Burning disk type produced particles carrying much higher oxidative potential (OP) 0.0430 nmol/mg. The VOCs species produced by the disc and liquid types were mainly VOC to m/z 79(benzene) and VOC to m/z 33(methanol), and the corresponding benzene concentration were 40.7 ppb and 58.6 ppb, respectively, and the methanol concentration was 26.3 ppb and 35.2 ppb, respectively. SOA formation rate related to benzene of liquid type using was larger compared to disk type, which was 0.015 mg/(m3s) and 0.012 mg/(m3s), respectively. The health risk assessment coefficient of the disc and liquid types were 6.2×10−5 and 9.1×10−5, respectively, both exceeding the limit of 1×10−6, indicating mosquito-repellent incenses is harmful to human health.

Using a six-cylinder turbocharged common rail compression ignition engine, this study investigated the effect of oxygenated fuels on transient and steady-state performance. This paper considers the effect of oxygenated fuels on both cold- and hot-start operation. A range of fuel oxygen contents between 0% and 13.57% was derived from diesel, waste cooking biodiesel and two other blends, containing triacetin as a fuel additive. A custom test was designed to investigate engine performance parameters using acceleration, load increase and steady-state modes of operation. For each fuel, the cold-start test was conducted after an overnight engine-off time. In this study, different parameters related to engine performance were studied, such as engine coolant and lubricant temperatures and their rise rate, boost pressure, injected fuel, turbocharger lag, engine speed and torque, start of injection, maximum in-cylinder pressure, maximum rate of pressure rise, cyclic variability, FMEP, mechanical and thermal efficiencies, and BSFC. In comparison with hot-start, the cold-start results indicated a higher injected fuel, indicated torque, maximum in-cylinder pressure, maximum rate of pressure rise, FMEP, BSFC and CoV of IMEP, and a lower SOI, ME and BTE. During cold-start, using oxygenated fuels, instead of diesel, resulted in a lower rate of lubricant temperature rise and a higher BSFC, while decreasing the FMEP. Using oxygenated fuels, instead of diesel, during the idle and transient modes resulted in lower indicated torque and maximum in-cylinder pressure under cold-start whilst, under hot-start, it resulted in higher indicated torque and maximum in-cylinder pressure, because during hot-start, the fuel oxygen is significantly influential in torque build-up during turbocharger lag. While, during cold-start there are some other influential factors. In addition, oxygenated fuels—compared to diesel—experienced higher CoV of IMEP during cold-start while, during hot-start, they had lower values.
