Th e whole area of Dubrovnik-Neretva County, situated in the southeastern part of Croatia, is at the moment, in terms of road accessibility, still not satisfactorily connected with the rest of Croatia. Th e lack of its accessibility is mostly caused by the fact that Bosnia and Herzegovina's border line cuts in two the Dubrovnik-Neretva County's (land) territory. As a result, on the way from southwest to southeast, or from Split to Dubrovnik, one needs to cross the state border with Bosnia and Herzegovina twice. Th e construction of the Pelješac Bridge (together with a set of interconnecting roads) should improve the present situation signifi cantly, mainly due to the expected redirection of most of the traffi c to the new route across the Pelješac peninsula. However, it is fair to assume that this will additionally 'open' the entire Pelješac peninsula to the increased tourism related traffi c, especially to the demand of one day visitors and/or weekend guests originating mostly from the nearby Bosnia and Herzegovina. Although the redirection of traffi c is expected to create additional pressure on the peninsula's environment and its communal infrastructure, it seems that the Pelješac Bridge construction should not, only by itself, significantly jeopardize neither the sustainability, nor the (desirable) long-term market positioning of the peninsula on the tourism destination market.

This collection of research is the result of fruitful collaboration between the Department of Geography of the University of Zagreb in Croatia, and the Department of Geography of the University of Primorska in Slovenia, which was implemented within the framework of a bilateral research pro-ject entitled “Comparative analysis of spatial development of tourism in protected areas of Croatia and Slovenia”, in 2018 and 2019. The authors found a background for their research in the fact that Croatia and Slovenia are interesting cases for examining the spatial development of tourism in protected areas of nature, as they shared the same socio-economic context of development in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. After their independence and the period of transition, they faced different development dynamics and adopted various approaches for management and development of protected areas. Today, both countries are members of the European Union and are confronted with many similar challenges regarding the implementation of the concept of sustainable tourism in protected areas.

Rad se bavi usporedbom teritorijalnog ustroja Hrvatske s ustrojem u drugim europskim zemljama s naglaskom na geografskim aspektima, u prvom redu prostornom obuhvatu i broju stanovnika upravnih jedinica. U uvodnom se dijelu nakon pregleda recentnih radova na ovu temu daje analitički osvrt na aktualnu teritorijalnu podjelu na županije, gradove i općine te na nekadašnju podjelu na zajednice općina i tzv. „velike” općine. Slijedi pregled teritorijalnog ustroja u europskim zemljama i usporedba s Hrvatskom, s naglaskom na nužnost dovođenja teritorijalnog ustroja u vezu s veličinom i brojem stanovnika pojedine države. U zaključnom su dijelu rada prijedlozi administrativne podjele Hrvatske temeljeni na prostornoj distribuciji stanovništva i glavnih urbanih središta te najboljoj praksi u Europi., This paper compares the administrative-territorial organisation of Croatia with the organisation in other European countries, with an emphasis on geographical aspects – primarily size (territory) and number of inhabitants of administrative units. The introduction provides an analytical review of the recent papers on this topic, and then an analysis of the current territorial division of Croatia and its former division into regions (groups of municipalities) and so-called “large” municipalities. This is followed by an overview of territorial organisation in other European countries, which is compared with Croatia, with focus on the need to emphasise the relationship between territorial organisation and the size of a particular state. The final part of the paper contains proposals for the administrative division of Croatian territory based on the spatial distribution of the population and the main urban centres, using the application of the best practices in Europe.

This article highlights the growth of tourism on a typical island over a twenty-five-year period. The island in this study is the island of Vis in the Adriatic Sea, belonging to Croatia’s Middle Adriatic archipelago. This investigation and examination of the key challenges and changes, both negative and positive, it is hoped, will bring to light the very limits of what an acceptable level of tourism volume should be without putting at risk the island’s natural and cultural heritage and infrastructure.

This work elaborates the existing spatial organization of World Tourism Organization (WTO) from the geographical point of view, and tries to explain the logic of the scope of particular spatial units. The first part of the work elaborates the history and conditions of the origin of the existing WTO official spatial organization and explains the basic differences between the WTO and geographical approach. The largest part of the work includes geographical analysis of particular regions and subregions according to the WTO, and includes some suggestions of the most appropriate solutions besides the critical approach. In the concluding part the author plead for appreciation of the WTO spatial organization by geographers in spite of the logic and the circumstances of the original formation and many exceptions from the common geographical regions. The author considers that understanding of the spatial organization of World Tourism Organization is essential for the qualified use and understanding of the various data and analysis published by the WTO as the basic data source in world tourism.

Turizam, kao važna gospodarska grana u Republici Hrvatskoj sastoji se od mnogo podsustava sa svojim turističkim proizvodima od kojih je jedan i cikloturizam. Kako bi se cikloturizam uspješno razvijao potrebno je stvoriti i uvjete za njegov razvitak a to je biciklistička infrastruktura. Biciklistička infrastruktura u Republici Hrvatskoj nije svugdje podjednako razvijena, no u svakom slučaju ispod je razine razvijenosti biciklističke infrastrukture u mnogim razvijenim europskim područjima. Prvi korak u planiranju biciklističke infrastrukture je odabir vrste biciklističke infrastrukture poput traka, staza ili isključivo biciklističkih cesta (ulica). U radu su prikazani kriteriji koji se uzimaju u obzir prilikom izbora biciklističke infrastrukture, a ovisni su o intenzitetu i brzini motornog prometa i intenzitetu biciklističkog prometa. Nakon što se istraži prometni intenzitet na prometnicama, može se prići prometnom projektiranju biciklističke infrastrukture. U ovome radu prikazana je metodologija odabira biciklističke infrastrukture i njena implementacija na području Bjelovarsko-bilogorske županije. Analizirane su postojeće biciklističke rute i dat je prijedlog novih ruta, koje prate atraktivnija područja Županije uz povećanu sigurnost za bicikliste. Također, dati su prijedlozi za povećanje atraktivnosti cikloturizma u Županiji, koja bi uslijed svojih geografskih obilježja te realizacijom danih prijedloga, mogla biti jedna od vodećih cikloturističkih destinacija kontinentalnog dijela Hrvatske., Tourism, as an important economic branch in the Republic of Croatia, consists of many subsystems of tourism products, one of which is cycling tourism. In order to successfully develop cycling tourism, it is necessary to create the conditions for its development, which implies cycling infrastructure. Cycling infrastructure is not uniformly developed throughout Croatia, and is certainly below the level of development of such infrastructure in many developed parts of Europe. The first step in planning cycling infrastructure is the selection of the type of infrastructure, such as lanes, trails or roads exclusively for bicycles. This paper provides an outline of the criteria that are considered when selecting cycling infrastructure, which are dependent on the intensity and speed of motor traffic and intensity of cycling traffic. Once the traffic intensity on roads is investigated, the cycling infrastructure can be designed. This paper shows the methodology of selecting cycling infrastructure and its implementation in Bjelovar-Bilogora County. The existing cycling routes were analysed and new routes proposed to access the more attractive parts of the county, while increasing cyclist safety. Recommendations are also given for increasing the attractiveness of cycling tourism in the county. Give its geographical characteristics and the actualisation of the given proposals, the county could be one of the leading cycling tourism destinations in the continental part of Croatia.

The notion of touristic function is analvsed and defined in the communes of Yugoslavia. The main touristic regions of Yugoslavia are also determined.
