We present the first polarized neutron transmission image of a model Ne\'el ferrimagnetic material, polycrystalline terbium iron garnet (Tb$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$, TbIG for short), as it is taken through its compensation temperature $T_{comp}$ where, according to the theory of ferrimagnetism, the internal magnetization should vanish. Our polarized neutron imaging data and the additional supporting measurements using neutron spin echo spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry are all consistent with a vanishing internal magnetization at $T_{comp}$., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures

The ubiquitous domain wall kinetics under magnetic field or current application describes the dynamic properties in nanostructured magnets. However, when the geometrical size of a nanomagnetic system is constricted to the limiting domain wall length scale, the competing energetics between anisotropy, exchange and dipolar interactions can cause emergent kinetics due to quasiparticle relaxation, similar to bulk magnets of atomic origin. Here, we present a joint experimental and theoretical study to support this argument -- constricted nanomagnets, made of antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic neodymium thin film with honeycomb motif, reveal fast kinetic events at ps time scales due to the relaxation of chiral vortex loop-shaped topological quasiparticles that persist to low temperature in the absence of any external stimuli. Such phenomena are typically found in macroscopic magnetic materials. Our discovery is especially important considering the fact that paramagnets or antiferromagnets have no net magnetization. Yet, the kinetics in neodymium nanostructures is quantitatively similar to that found in ferromagnetic counterparts and only varies with the thickness of the specimen. Topological magnetic charges, arising due to the non-vanishing magnetic flux on spin ice vertices, serve as the origin of magnetic monopoles that traverse the underlying lattice effortlessly. Unlike spin ice materials of atomic origin, the dynamic state in artificial honeycomb spin ice is conventionally described in terms of finite size domain wall kinetics that require magnetic field or current application. Contrary to this common understanding, here we show that thermally tunable artificial permalloy honeycomb lattice manifests a perpetual dynamic state due to self-propelled magnetic charge defect relaxation in the absence of any external tuning agent. Quantitative investigation of magnetic charge defect dynamics using neutron spin echo spectroscopy reveals sub-ns relaxation times that are comparable to monopole's relaxation in bulk spin ices. Most importantly, the kinetic process remains unabated at low temperature where thermal fluctuation is negligible. This suggests that dynamic phenomena in honeycomb spin ice are mediated by quasi-particle type entities, also confirmed by quantum Monte-Carlo simulations that replicate the kinetic behavior. In this manuscript we describe the investigation of the SARS-CoV2 membrane fusion timescale by means of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) using hydrogen/deuterium contrast variation. After the successful production of virus-like vesicles and human-host-cell-like vesicles we were able to follow the fusion of the respective vesicles in real-time. This was done using deuterated and protonated phospholipids in the vesicles in a neutron-contrast matched solvent. The vesicles were identical apart from either the presence or absence of the SARS-CoV2 spike protein. The human-host-cell-like vesicles were carrying an ACE2 receptor protein in all cases. In case of the absence of the spike protein a fusion over several hours was observed in agreement with literature, with a time constant of 4.5 h. In comparison, there was not time-evolution, but immediate fusion of the vesicles when the spike protein was present. Those two figures, fusion over several hours and fusion below 10 s corresponding to the absence or presence of the spike protein allow an upper-limit estimate for the fusion times of virus-like vesicles with the SARS-CoV2 spike protein of 10 s. This very fast fusion, when compared to the case without spike protein it is a factor of 2500, can also help to explain why infection with SARS-CoV2 can be so effective and fast. Studying spike protein variants using our method may explain differences in transmissibility between SARS-CoV2 strains. Emerging new concepts, such as magnetic charge dynamics in two-dimensional magnetic material, can provide novel mechanism for spin based electrical transport at macroscopic length. In artificial spin ice of single domain elements, magnetic charge's relaxation can create an efficient electrical pathway for conduction by generating fluctuations in local magnetic field that couple with conduction electrons spins. In a first demonstration, we show that the electrical conductivity is propelled by more than an order of magnitude at room temperature due to magnetic charge defects sub-picosecond relaxation in artificial magnetic honeycomb lattice. The direct evidence to the proposed electrical conduction mechanism in two-dimensional frustrated magnet points to the untapped potential for spintronic applications in this system.

Salt is a very common molecule in aqueous environments but the question of whether the interactions of monovalent ions Na^+ and Cl^- ,with the neutral heads of phospholipids are impactful enough to change the membrane rigidity is still a mystery. To provide a resolution to this long simmering debate, we investigated the dynamics of DOPC vesicles in the fluid phase with increasing external salt concentration. At higher salt concentrations, we observe an increase in bending rigidity from neutron spin echo spectroscopy (NSE) and an increase in bilayer thickness from small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). We compared different models to distinguish membrane undulations, lipid tail motions and the translational diffusion of the vesicles. All the models indicate an increase in bending rigidity by a factor of 1.3 to 3.6. We demonstrate that even for t > 10 ns, and for Q > 0.07 1/{\AA} the observed NSE relaxation spectra is clearly influenced by the translational diffusion of the vesicles. For t < 5 ns, the lipid tail motions dominate the intermediate dynamic structure factor. As the salt concentration increases this contribution diminishes. We exploited the high temporal and spatial resolution of neutron spin echo spectroscopy to investigate the large-scale dynamics of semiflexible conjugated polymer chains in solutions. We obtained the first experimental demonstration of earlier predicted single chain glassy state. We used a generalized approach of the well-established Zimm model of flexible polymers to describe the relaxation mode spectra of locally stiff polythiophene chains. The Zimm mode analysis confirms the existence of beads with a finite length that corresponds to a reduced number of segmental modes in semiflexible chains. Irrespective of the temperature and the molecular weight of the conjugated polymer, we witness a universal behavior of the local chain stiffness and invariability of the beads length. Our experimental findings indicate possibly minor role of the change in {\pi}-electron conjugation length (and therefore conjugated backbone planar to non-planar conformational transition) in the observed thermochromic behavior of polythiophene but instead point on the major role of chain dynamics in this phenomenon., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures, Accepted in Scientific Reports

We report measurements of the $\pi^- p \to \pi^o n$ differential cross sections at six momenta (104-143 MeV/c) and four angles (0-40 deg) by detection of $\gamma$-ray pairs from $\pi^o \to \gamma \gamma$ decays using the TRIUMF RMC spectrometer. This region exhibits a vanishing zero-degree cross section from destructive interference between s-- and p--waves, thus yielding special sensitivity to pion-nucleon dynamics and isospin symmetry breaking. We present a measurement of the spin-dependent cross sections for the \vec{^3He}(\vec{e},e')X} reaction in the quasielastic and resonance regions at four-momentum transfer 0.1 < Q^2< 0.9 GeV^2. The spin-structure functions have been extracted and used to evaluate the nuclear Burkhardt--Cottingham and extended GDH sum rules for the first time. The mean life of the positive muon has been measured to a precision of 11 ppm using a low-energy, pulsed muon beam stopped in a ferromagnetic target, which was surrounded by a scintillator detector array. The result, tau_mu = 2.197013(24) us, is in excellent agreement with the previous world average. The new world average tau_mu = 2.197019(21) us determines the Fermi constant G_F = 1.166371(6) x 10^-5 GeV^-2 (5 ppm). We report measurements of double radiative capture in pionic hydrogen and pionic deuterium. The measurements were performed with the RMC spectrometer at the TRIUMF cyclotron by recording photon pairs from pion stops in liquid hydrogen and deuterium targets. We obtained absolute branching ratios of $(3.02 \pm 0.27 (stat.) \pm 0.31 (syst.)) \times 10^{-5}$ for hydrogen and $(1.42 \pm ^{0.09}_{0.12} (stat.) \pm 0.11 (syst.)) \times 10^{-5}$ for deuterium, and relative branching ratios of double radiative capture to single radiative capture of $(7.68 \pm 0.69(stat.) \pm 0.79(syst.)) \times 10^{-5}$ for hydrogen and $(5.44 \pm^{0.34}_{0.46}(stat.) \pm 0.42(syst.)) \times 10^{-5}$ for deuterium. For hydrogen, the measured branching ratio and photon energy-angle distributions are in fair agreement with a reaction mechanism involving the annihilation of the incident $\pi^-$ on the $\pi^+$ cloud of the target proton. For deuterium, the measured branching ratio and energy-angle distributions are qualitatively consistent with simple arguments for the expected role of the spectator neutron. A comparison between our hydrogen and deuterium data and earlier beryllium and carbon data reveals substantial changes in the relative branching ratios and the energy-angle distributions and is in agreement with the expected evolution of the reaction dynamics from an annihilation process in S-state capture to a bremsstrahlung process in P-state capture. We report a measurement of the ortho-para transition rate in the p$\mu$p molecule. The experiment was conducted at TRIUMF via the measurement of the time dependence of the 5.2 MeV neutrons from muon capture in liquid hydrogen. The measurement yielded an ortho-para rate $\Lambda_{op} = (11.1 \pm 1.7 \pm^{0.9}_{0.6}) \times 10^4$ s$^{-1}$ that is substantially larger than the earlier result of Bardin {\it et al.} We discuss the striking implications for the proton's induced pseudoscalar coupling $g_p$., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. High precision cross-section data of the deuteron-proton breakup reaction at 130 MeV are presented for 72 kinematically complete configurations. The data cover a large region of the available phase space, divided into a systematic grid of kinematical variables. They are compared with theoretical predictions, in which the full dynamics of the three-nucleon (3N) system is obtained in three different ways: realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) potentials are combined with model 3N forces (3NF's) or with an effective 3NF resulting from explicit treatment of the Delta-isobar excitation. Alternatively, the chiral perturbation theory approach is used at the next-to-next-to-leading order with all relevant NN and 3N contributions taken into account. The generated dynamics is then applied to calculate cross-section values by rigorous solution of the 3N Faddeev equations. The comparison of the calculated cross sections with the experimental data shows a clear prefernce for the predictions in which the 3NF's are included. The majority of the experimental data points is well reproduced by the theoretical predictions. The remaining discrepancies are investigated by inspecting cross sections integrated over certain kinematical variables. The procedure of global comparisons leads to establishing regularities in disagreements between the experimental data and the theoretically predicted values of the cross sections. A research program with the aim of investigating the spin dependence of the three-nucleon continuum in pd collisions at intermediate energies was carried out at IUCF using the Polarized INternal Target EXperiments (PINTEX) facility. In the elastic scattering experiment at 135 and 200 MeV proton beam energies a total of 15 independent spin observables were obtained. The breakup experiment was done with a vector and tensor polarized deuteron beam of 270 MeV and an internal polarized hydrogen gas target. We developed a novel technique for the analysis of the breakup observables, the sampling method. We report a search for low-lying exotic baryons via double radiative capture on pionic hydrogen. The data were collected at the TRIUMF cyclotron using the RMC spectrometer by detecting gamma-ray pairs from pion stops in liquid hydrogen. No evidence was found to support an earlier claim for exotic baryons of masses 1004 and 1044 MeV/$c^2$. We obtain upper limits on the branching ratios for double radiative capture via these exotic states of $< 3 \times 10^{-6}$ and $< 4 \times 10^{-6}$ respectively., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We present a method to integrate predictions from a theoretical model of a reaction with three bodies in the final state over the region of phase space covered by a given experiment. The method takes into account the true experimental acceptance, as well as variations of detector efficiency, and eliminates the need for a Monte-Carlo simulation of the detector setup. The method is applicable to kinematically complete experiments. Examples for the use of this method include several polarization observables in dp break-up at 270 MeV. The calculations are carried out in the Faddeev framework with the CD Bonn nucleon-nucleon interaction, with or without the inclusion of an additional three-nucleon force., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

We report a search for d^* dibaryon production by double-radiative capture on pionic deuterium. The experiment was conducted at the TRIUMF cyclotron using the RMC cylindrical pair spectrometer, and detected gamma-ray coincidences following pion stops in liquid deuterium. We found no evidence for narrow dibaryons, and obtained a branching ratio upper limit, BR < 6.7 times 10^{-6} (90% C.L.), for narrow d^* production in the mass range from 1920 to 1980 MeV. We report the first observation of double radiative capture on pionic hydrogen. The experiment was conducted at the TRIUMF cyclotron using the RMC spectrometer, and detected $\gamma$--ray coincidences following $\pi^-$ stops in liquid hydrogen. We found the branching ratio for double radiative capture to be $(3.05 \pm 0.27(stat.) \pm 0.31(syst.)) \times 10^{-5}$. Selected Nd breakup data over a wide energy range are compared to solutions of Faddeev equations based on modern high precision NN interactions alone and adding current three-nucleon force models. Unfortunately currently available data probe phase space regions for the final three nucleon momenta which are rather insensitive to 3NF effects as predicted by current models. Overall there is good to fair agreement between present day theory and experiment but also some cases exist with striking discrepancies. Regions in the phase space are suggested where large 3NF effects can be expected., Comment: 33 pages, 24 ps figures, 9 gif figures

An extensive study of three-nucleon force effects in the entire phase space of the nucleon-deuteron breakup process, for energies from above the deuteron breakup threshold up to 200 MeV, has been performed. 3N Faddeev equations have been solved rigorously using the modern high precision nucleon-nucleon potentials AV18, CD Bonn, Nijm I, II and Nijm 93, and also adding 3N forces. We compare predictions for cross sections and various polarization observables when NN forces are used alone or when the two pion-exchange Tucson-Melbourne 3NF was combined with each of them. In addition AV18 was combined with the Urbana IX 3NF and CD Bonn with the TM' 3NF, which is a modified version of the TM 3NF, more consistent with chiral symmetry. Large but generally model dependent 3NF effects have been found in certain breakup configurations, especially at the higher energies, both for cross sections and spin observables. These results demonstrate the usefulness of the kinematically complete breakup reaction in testing the proper structure of 3N forces., Comment: 42 pages, 20 ps figures, 2 gif figures

Some present day results for few-nucleon bound state, two-nucleon correlation functions and scattering observables are briefly reviewed. The old idea of the Coulomb sum rule as a way to extract the pp correlation function is reconsidered. It appears to be an ideal case to probe properties of the density operator and the ground state wave functions without disturbances of final state interactions (FSI) in exclusive electron scattering on 3He. Also exclusive photodisintegration of 3He is regarded which appears to be promising to identify 3N force effects., Comment: 28 pages, 21 figs. Faddeev equations for elastic Nd scattering have been solved using modern NN forces combined with the Tucson-Melbourne two-pion exchange three-nucleon force, with a modification thereof closer to chiral symmetry and the Urbana IX three-nucleon force. Theoretical predictions for the differential cross section and several spin observables using NN forces only and NN forces combined with three-nucleon force models are compared to each other and to the existing data. A wide range of energies from 3 to 200 MeV is covered. Especially at the higher energies striking three-nucleon force effects are found, some of which are supported by the still rare set of data, some are in conflict with data and thus very likely point to defects in those three-nucleon force models., Comment: 30 pages, 14 Postscript figures; now minor changes in figures and references

We report the first observation of the doubly-radiative decay mode of pionic hydrogen (pi- p --> gamma gamma n) and and deuterium (pi- d --> gamma gamma X) using the RMC pair spectrometer at TRIUMF. The process is interesting in the context of the pi-Compton scattering and the chiPT predictions of the pion polarizability We present our preliminary values for the B.R.(pi- p --> gamma gamma n)=3.8x10^-5 and B.R.(pi- d --> gamma gamma X)=1.6x10^-5. Our pi- p data indicates the dominance of pi pi --> gamma gamma mechanism. We have measured the reaction p + d -> 3He + eta at a proton beam energy of 980 MeV, which is 88.5 MeV above threshold using the new ``germanium wall'' detector system. A missing--mass resolution of the detector system of 2.6% was achieved. The angular distribution of the meson is forward peaked. We found a total cross section of (573 +- 83(stat.) +- 69(syst.))nb. The excitation function for the present reaction is described by a Breit Wigner form with parameters from photoproduction., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, corrected typos in header

We propose to measure the two--photon capture mode of pionic hydrogen using the RMC pair spectrometer at the TRIUMF cyclotron. Currently, only an experimental upper limit of B.R.<= 5.5E-4 is available for the two-gamma capture mode. Our new data will critically test the theoretical calculations and the intriguing predicted dominance of the pi pi --> gamma gamma annihilation graph. More speculatively, since crossing symmetry relates pi pi --> gamma gamma to gamma pi --> gamma pi, this threshold reaction may be a novel probe of the pion's electric polarizability. We show results of our 1997 engineering run and Monte Carlo studies for the two photon capture mode of pionic hydrogen and carbon.
