A 98-day research was conducted to assess the influence of dietary montmorillonite (MMT) on growth and immune competence in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Fish fry (mean weight: 500 ± 35 mg) were fed with four experimental diets contained MMT at levels of 0 (as control group), 1, 2 and 4%. At the end of the experiment, the survival rate and growth parameters and serum total protein and albumin levels in MMT experimental groups was higher than the control group. Regarding humoral immune responses, fish being fed with 2 and 4% MMT diets showed the greatest and the lowest serum C 3 , C 4 and lysozyme levels, respectively. Serum alternative complement pathway activity (ACH50) in groups fed with 1 and 2% MMT supplemented diets was higher than the other groups. At the end of the challenge test with VHSV, the mortality rate reached to 28 and 20% in the control group and 4% MMT supplemented groups, respectively, whereas fish fed with 1 and 2% MMT supplemented diets showed the lowest mortality rate (2.5%) Fish fed with 1 and 2% MMT supplemented groups showed higher head kidney IL-1β and TNF-α genes expression compared to the other treatment groups. In addition, fish fed with 2% MMT-supplemented diet had the highest head kidney Lyz-2 gene expression. Benzo[ a ]pyrene (B[ a ]P) is an important contaminant whose liver biotransformation is dependent on the species, the route of exposure and the concentration. The goal of this study was to assess the interactions of oxidative DNA damage and CYP1A gene expression with the liver enzymes in Klunzinger's mullet ( Liza klunzingeri ) exposed to benzo[ a ]pyrene. Sublethal doses of B[ a ]P (5, 10 and 50 mg/kg) were intraperitoneally administered to the fish for 14 days. The alterations in antioxidant enzymes' activity (SOD, CAT, and GPX), hepatic enzymes' activity (ALT, AST and ALP), DNA damage (measured by comet assay and cellProfiler software) and CYP1A gene expression in the fish liver were studied on the 1st, 3rd, 7th and 14th days. The determination of these parameters in the liver showed that most of these parameters significantly increased mostly in a time-dependent manner. Multiple regression analysis showed that DNA damage and CYP1A gene expression had positive correlations with the liver enzymes in this fish species intraperitoneally exposed to these concentrations. Moreover, these interactions indicated that theses parameters are sensitive biomarkers for the exposure to B[a]P in Klunzinger's mullet. Following the recent progress in magnetic nanotechnology, concern over the optimal benefits and potential risks of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe NPs), has increased. Hence, to minimize the negative impacts of inorganic Fe NPs, we report the phyco-synthesis and characterization of superparamagnetic Fe 3 O 4 NPs via reduction of ferric/ferrous chloride solution (2:1 M ratio; 88 °C) with green macroalga, Ulva flexuosa (wulfen) J.Agardh aqueous extract. The biogenic process is clean, eco-friendly, rapid, and facile to handle. These green fabricated magnetite NPs are characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), particle size analysers (PSA), zeta potential (ZP) measurement, and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) techniques. The results confirmed that the cubo-spherical, polydisperse of biosynthesized Fe 3 O 4 NPs with an average diameter of 12.3 nm was formed. The antagonistic effects of algal extract, chemo-route and U. flexuosa-derived Fe 3 O 4 MgNPs on selective human pathogenic microbes (i.e. n = 11) resulted in strong antibacterial and moderate antifungal activity. The comparative toxic and reproductive effects of the chemo- and bio-routes of Fe 3 O 4 -MgNPs against rotifer B. rotundiformis exhibited low acute toxicity with a lower inducing effect of biogenic nano-magnetite on reduction rotifer reproductive rate than its chemogenic counterpart. In view of the nanoecotoxicity, though the current study covered a wide range of exposure concentrations (10-500 mg/L) of organic and inorganic nano sizes of Fe 3 O 4 in brackish water rotifer, a biotoxicity assay at higher dosage or a comprehensive risk assessment in different aqua-organisms is recommended., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd.
