NGC 6357, a star-forming complex at $\sim 1.7$ kpc from the Sun, contains giant molecular clouds and three prominent star clusters alongside with HII regions, very massive stars and thousands of young stellar objects in different evolutionary stages. We present a combined infrared kinematic and time domain study of the line of sight towards this region enabled by the VVVX survey. In terms of kinematics, a novel discovery emerges: an asymmetrical distribution in the vector point diagram. Some stars in the sample exhibit spatial proximity to dusty regions, with their proper motions aligned with filament projections, hinting at a younger population linked to triggered star formation. However, this distribution could also stem from an asymmetric stellar expansion event within NGC 6357, warranting further investigation. Comparing this data with Gaia revealed inconsistencies likely due to high extinction levels in the region. Additionally, owing to accretion episodes and surface cool spots, young stars display high variability. Using the $K_s$-band time series data, we overcome the extreme levels of extinction towards the region, and compile a catalogue of $774$ infrared light curves of young stars. Each light curve has been characterized in terms of asymmetry and periodicity, to infer the dominant underlying physical mechanism. These findings are then correlated with evolutionary stages, aiming to uncover potential age disparities among the observed stars. Context. Observational evidence has accumulated in the past years, showing that the Galactic bulge includes two populations, a metal poor and a metal rich one that, in addition to a different metallicity, show different alpha over iron abundances, spatial distribution, and kinematics. While the metal rich, barred component has been fairly well characterized, the metal poor, spheroidal component has been more elusive and harder to describe. RR Lyrae variables are clean tracers of the old bulge component, and they are, on average, more metal poor than red clump stars. Aims. The ESO public survey VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV) surveyed the inner Galactic bulge and the adjacent southern Galactic disk from $2009-2015$. Upon its conclusion, the complementary VVV eXtended (VVVX) survey has expanded both the temporal as well as spatial coverage of the original VVV area, widening it from $562$ to $1700$ sq. deg., as well as providing additional epochs in $JHK_{\rm s}$ filters from $2016-2023$. With the completion of VVVX observations during the first semester of 2023, we present here the observing strategy, a description of data quality and access, and the legacy of VVVX. VVVX took $\sim 2000$ hours, covering about 4% of the sky in the bulge and southern disk. VVVX covered most of the gaps left between the VVV and the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) areas and extended the VVV time baseline in the obscured regions affected by high extinction and hence hidden from optical observations. VVVX provides a deep $JHK_{\rm s}$ catalogue of $\gtrsim 1.5\times10^9$ point sources, as well as a $K_{\rm s}$ band catalogue of $\sim 10^7$ variable sources. Within the existing VVV area, we produced a $5D$ map of the surveyed region by combining positions, distances, and proper motions of well-understood distance indicators such as red clump stars, RR Lyrae, and Cepheid variables. In March 2023 we successfully finished the VVVX survey observations that started in 2016, an accomplishment for ESO Paranal Observatory upon 4200 hours of observations for VVV+VVVX. The VVV+VVVX catalogues complement those from the Gaia mission at low Galactic latitudes and provide spectroscopic targets for the forthcoming ESO high-multiplex spectrographs MOONS and 4MOST., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures (+ appendix). The structure and kinematics of the old component of the Galactic bulge are still a matter of debate. The bulk of the bulge as traced by red clump stars includes two main components, which are usually identified as the metal-rich and metal-poor components. They have different shapes, kinematics, mean metallicities, and alpha-element abundances. It is our current understanding that they are associated with a bar and a spheroid, respectively. On the other hand, RR Lyrae variables trace the oldest population of the bulge. While it would be natural to think that they follow the structure and kinematics of the metal-poor component, the data analysed in the literature show conflicting results. We aim to derive a rotation curve for bulge RR Lyrae stars in order to determine that the old component traced by these stars is distinct from the two main components observed in the Galactic bulge. This paper combines APOGEE-2S spectra with OGLE-IV light curves, near-IR photometry, and proper motions from the VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea survey for 4197 RR Lyrae stars. Six-dimensional phase-space coordinates were used to calculate orbits within an updated Galactic potential and to isolate the stars. The stars that stay confined within the bulge represent 57% of our sample. Our results show that bulge RR Lyrae variables rotate more slowly than metal-rich red clump stars and have a lower velocity dispersion. Their kinematics is compatible with them being the low-metallicity tail of the metal-poor component. We confirm that a rather large fraction of halo RR Lyrae stars pass by the bulge within their orbits, increasing the velocity dispersion. A proper orbital analysis is therefore critical to isolate bona fide bulge variables. Finally, bulge RR Lyrae seem to trace a spheroidal component, although the current data do now allow us to reach a firm conclusion about the spatial distribution., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, accepted by A&A

The nuclear region of the Milky Way is believed to host a nuclear stellar disk, co-spatial with the gaseous central molecular zone. Previous kinematical studies detected faster rotation for the stars belonging to the nuclear stellar disk, compared to the surrounding regions. We analyze the rotation velocity of stars at the nuclear stellar disk, and compare them with its analog in a few control fields just outside this region. We limit our analysis to stars in the red clump of the color magnitude diagram, in order to be able to relate their mean de-reddened luminosity with distance along the line of sight. We used a proper motion catalog, obtained from point spread function photometry on VVV images, to construct maps of the transverse velocity for these stars. We complemented our analysis with radial velocities from the 17th data release of the APOGEE survey. We find that the main difference between the nuclear stellar disk region and its surroundings is that at the former we see only stars moving eastward, which we believe are located in front of the Galactic center. On the contrary, in every other direction, we see the brightest red clump stars moving eastward, and the faintest ones moving westward, as expected for a rotating disk. We interpret these observations as being produced by the central molecular zone, hiding stars behind itself. What we observe is compatible with being produced by just the absence of the component at the back, without requiring the presence of a cold, fast rotating disk. This component is also not clearly detected in the newest release of the APOGEE catalog. This study probes the chemical abundances of the neutron-capture elements cerium and neodymium in the inner Milky Way from an analysis of a sample of $\sim$2000 stars in the Galactic Bulge/bar spatially contained within $|X_{Gal}|<$5 kpc, $|Y_{Gal}|<$3.5 kpc, and $|Z_{Gal}|<$1 kpc, and spanning metallicities between $-$2.0$\lesssim$[Fe/H]$\lesssim$+0.5. We classify the sample stars into low- or high-[Mg/Fe] populations and find that, in general, values of [Ce/Fe] and [Nd/Fe] increase as the metallicity decreases for the low- and high-[Mg/Fe] populations. Ce abundances show a more complex variation across the metallicity range of our Bulge-bar sample when compared to Nd, with the r-process dominating the production of neutron-capture elements in the high-[Mg/Fe] population ([Ce/Nd]$<$0.0). We find a spatial chemical dependence of Ce and Nd abundances for our sample of Bulge-bar stars, with low- and high-[Mg/Fe] populations displaying a distinct abundance distribution. In the region close to the center of the MW, the low-[Mg/Fe] population is dominated by stars with low [Ce/Fe], [Ce/Mg], [Nd/Mg], [Nd/Fe], and [Ce/Nd] ratios. The low [Ce/Nd] ratio indicates a significant contribution in this central region from r-process yields for the low-[Mg/Fe] population. The chemical pattern of the most metal-poor stars in our sample suggests an early chemical enrichment of the Bulge dominated by yields from core-collapse supernovae and r-process astrophysical sites, such as magneto-rotational supernovae., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures, 1 table

After the second data release of Gaia, the number of new globular cluster candidates has increased importantly. However, most of them need to be properly characterised, both spectroscopically and photometrically, by means of radial velocities, metallicities, and deeper photometric observations. Our goal is to provide an independent confirmation of the cluster nature of Gran 4, a recently discovered globular cluster, with follow-up spectroscopic observations. The derived radial velocity for individual stars, coupled with proper motions, allows us to isolate cluster members from field stars, while the analysis of their spectra allows us to derive metallicities. By including in the analysis the recently confirmed clusters Gran 1, 2, 3, and 5, we aim to completely characterise the sample presented in Gran et al. 2022. Using Gaia DR3 and VVV catalogue data and MUSE@VLT observations, we performed a selection of cluster members based on their proper motions, radial velocities and their position in colour-magnitude diagrams. Furthermore, full spectral synthesis was performed on the cluster members, extracting surface parameters and metallicity from MUSE spectra. Finally, a completeness estimation was performed on the total globular cluster population of the Milky Way. We confirm the nature of Gran 4, a newly discovered globular cluster behind the Galactic bulge, with a mean radial velocity of ${\rm RV} = -265.28 \pm 3.92$ km s$^{-1}$ and a mean metallicity of ${\rm [Fe/H] = -1.72 \pm 0.32}$ dex. Additionally, independent measurements of the metallicities were derived for Gran 1, 2, 3, and 5. We also revise the observational lower mass limit for a globular cluster to survive in the bulge/disk environment. We estimate that $\sim 12-26$ globular clusters have still to be discovered on the other side of the Galaxy (i.e., behind the bulge/bar/disk), up to 20 kpc., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, appendix: 5 tables and 1 figure. T Tauri stars are low-mass pre-main sequence stars that are intrinsically variable. Due to the intense magnetic fields they possess, they develop dark spots on their surface that, because of rotation, introduce a periodic variation of brightness.In addition, the presence of surrounding disks could generate flux variations by variable extinction or accretion. Both can lead to a brightness decrease or increase, respectively. Here, we have compiled a catalog of light curves for 379 T Tauri stars in the Lagoon Nebula (M8) region, using VVVX survey data in the Ks-band. All these stars were already classified as pre-MS stars based on other indicators. The data presented here are spread over a period of about eight years, which gives us a unique follow-up time for these sources at this wavelength. The light curves were classified according to their degree of periodicity and asymmetry, to constrain the physical processes responsible for their variation. Periods were compared with the ones found in literature, on a much shorter baseline. This allowed us to prove that for 126 stars, the magnetically active regions remain stable for several years. Besides, our near-IR data were compared with the optical Kepler/K2 light curves, when available, giving us a better understanding of the mechanisms responsible for the brightness variations observed and how they manifest at different bands. We found that the periodicity in both bands is in fairly good agreement, but the asymmetry will depend on the amplitude of the bursts or dips events and the observation cadence., Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The central part of the Galaxy host a multitude of stellar populations, including the spheroidal bulge stars, stars moved to the bulge through secular evolution of the bar, inner halo, inner thick disk, inner thin disk, as well as debris from past accretion events. We identified a sample of 58 candidate stars belonging to the stellar population of the spheroidal bulge, and analyse their abundances. The present calculations of Mg, Ca, and Si lines are in agreement with the APOGEE-ASPCAP abundances, whereas abundances of C, N, O, and Ce are re-examined. We find normal $\alpha$-element enhancements in oxygen, similar to magnesium, Si, and Ca abundances, which are typical of other bulge stars surveyed in the optical in Baade's Window. The enhancement of [O/Fe] in these stars suggests that they do not belong to accreted debris. No spread in N abundances is found, and none of the sample stars is N-rich, indicating that these stars are not second generation stars originated in globular clusters. Ce instead is enhanced in the sample stars, which points to an s-process origin such as due to enrichment from early generations of massive fast rotating stars, the so-called spinstars, Comment: to be published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey is an ambitious project designed to obtain astrophysical parameters and elemental abundances for 100,000 stars, including large representative samples of the stellar populations in the Galaxy, and a well-defined sample of 60 (plus 20 archive) open clusters. We provide internally consistent results calibrated on benchmark stars and star clusters, extending across a very wide range of abundances and ages. This provides a legacy data set of intrinsic value, and equally a large wide-ranging dataset that is of value for homogenisation of other and future stellar surveys and Gaia's astrophysical parameters. This article provides an overview of the survey methodology, the scientific aims, and the implementation, including a description of the data processing for the GIRAFFE spectra. A companion paper (arXiv:2206.02901) introduces the survey results. Gaia-ESO aspires to quantify both random and systematic contributions to measurement uncertainties. Thus all available spectroscopic analysis techniques are utilised, each spectrum being analysed by up to several different analysis pipelines, with considerable effort being made to homogenise and calibrate the resulting parameters. We describe here the sequence of activities up to delivery of processed data products to the ESO Science Archive Facility for open use. The Gaia-ESO Survey obtained 202,000 spectra of 115,000 stars using 340 allocated VLT nights between December 2011 and January 2018 from GIRAFFE and UVES. The full consistently reduced final data set of spectra was released through the ESO Science Archive Facility in late 2020, with the full astrophysical parameters sets following in 2022., Comment: 38 pages. In the last 15 years different ground-based spectroscopic surveys have been started (and completed) with the general aim of delivering stellar parameters and elemental abundances for large samples of Galactic stars, complementing Gaia astrometry. Among those surveys, the Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey (GES), the only one performed on a 8m class telescope, was designed to target 100,000 stars using FLAMES on the ESO VLT (both Giraffe and UVES spectrographs), covering all the Milky Way populations, with a special focus on open star clusters. This article provides an overview of the survey implementation (observations, data quality, analysis and its success, data products, and releases), of the open cluster survey, of the science results and potential, and of the survey legacy. A companion article (Gilmore et al.) reviews the overall survey motivation, strategy, Giraffe pipeline data reduction, organisation, and workflow. The GES has determined homogeneous good-quality radial velocities and stellar parameters for a large fraction of its more than 110,000 unique target stars. Elemental abundances were derived for up to 31 elements for targets observed with UVES. Lithium abundances are delivered for about 1/3 of the sample. The analysis and homogenisation strategies have proven to be successful; several science topics have been addressed by the Gaia-ESO consortium and the community, with many highlight results achieved. The final catalogue has been released through the ESO archive at the end of May 2022, including the complete set of advanced data products. Long-period variable stars (LPVs) are pulsating red giants, primarily in the asymptotic giant branch phase, and they include both Miras and semi-regular variables (SRVs). Their period-age and period-luminosity relations enable us to trace different stellar populations, as they are intrinsically very bright and cover a wide range in distances and ages. The purpose of this study is to establish a census of LPV stars in a region close to the Galactic center, using the six-year database of the Vista Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV) ESO Public Survey, as well as to describe the methodology that was employed to search for and characterize LPVs using VVV data. Near-IR surveys such as VVV provide a unique opportunity to probe the high-extinction innermost regions of the Milky Way. The detection and analysis of the intrinsically bright Miras in this region could provide us with an excellent probe of the properties of the Milky Way far behind its bulge. We used point-spread function photometry for all available $K_{s}$-band images in ten VVV tiles, covering $16.4~\deg^2$ in total, overlapping fields observed in the course of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment (OGLE)-III survey. We designed a method to select LPV candidates, and we used the known variables from OGLE-III and other known variables from the literature to test our approach. The reduced $\chi^2$ statistic, along with the flux-independent index $K_{(fi)}$, were used in our analysis. The Lomb-Scargle period search method, Fourier analysis, template fitting, and visual inspection were then performed to refine our sample and characterize the properties of the stars included in our catalog. A final sample of 130 Mira candidates, of which 129 are new discoveries, was thus obtained, with periods in the range between about 80 and 1400~days.

Recent wide-area surveys have enabled us to study the Milky Way with unprecedented detail. Its inner regions, hidden behind dust and gas, have been partially unveiled with the arrival of near-IR photometric and spectroscopic datasets. Among recent discoveries, there is a population of low-mass globular clusters, known to be missing, especially towards the Galactic bulge. In this work, five new low-luminosity globular clusters located towards the bulge area are presented. They were discovered by searching for groups in the multi-dimensional space of coordinates, colours, and proper motions from the Gaia EDR3 catalogue and later confirmed with deeper VVV survey near-IR photometry. The clusters show well-defined red-giant branches and, in some cases, horizontal branches with their members forming a dynamically coherent structure in proper motion space. Four of them were confirmed by spectroscopic follow-up with the MUSE instrument on the ESO VLT. Photometric parameters were derived, and when available, metallicities, radial velocities and orbits were determined. The new clusters Gran 1 and 5 are bulge globular clusters, while Gran 2, 3, and 4 present halo-like properties. Preliminary orbits indicate that Gran 1 might be related to the Main Progenitor, or the so-called ''low-energy'' group, while Gran 2, 3 and 5 appear to follow the Gaia-Enceladus-Sausage. This study demonstrates that the Gaia proper motions, combined with the spectroscopic follow-up and colour-magnitude diagrams, are required to confirm the nature of cluster candidates towards the inner Galaxy. In an effort to improve our understanding of the spiral arm structure of the Milky Way, we use Classical Cepheids (CCs) to increase the number of young tracers on the far side of the Galactic disk with accurately determined distances. We use a sample of 30 CCs, discovered using near-infrared photometry from the VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea survey (VVV) and classified based on their radial velocities and metallicities. We combine them with another 20 CCs from the literature for which VVV photometry is available. The compiled sample of CCs with homogeneously computed distances based on VVV infrared photometry was employed as a proof of concept to trace the spiral structure in the poorly explored far side of the disk. Although the use of CCs has some caveats, these variables are currently the only available young tracers in the far side disk for which a numerous sample with accurate distances can be obtained. Therefore, a larger sample could allow us to make a significant step forward in our understanding of the Milky Way disk as a whole. We present preliminary evidence that CCs favor: a spiral arm model with two main arms (Perseus and Scutum-Centaurus) branching out into four arms at galactocentric distances, $R_\mathrm {GC}\gtrsim5-6\,\mathrm{kpc}$; the extension of the Scutum-Centaurus arm behind the Galactic center; a possible connection between the Perseus arm and the Norma tangency direction. The current sample of CCs in the far side of the Galaxy are in the mid-plane, arguing against the presence of a severely warped disk at small Galactocentric distances ($R_\mathrm {GC}\lesssim12\,\mathrm{kpc}$) in the studied area. The discovery and characterization of CCs at near-IR wavelengths appears to be a promising tool to complement studies based on other spiral arm tracers and extend them to the far side of our Galaxy., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We discuss the largest and most homogeneous spectroscopic dataset of field RR Lyrae variables (RRLs) available to date. We estimated abundances using both high-resolution and low-resolution ({\Delta S} method) spectra for fundamental (RRab) and first overtone (RRc) RRLs. The iron abundances for 7,941 RRLs were supplemented with similar literature estimates available, ending up with 9,015 RRLs (6,150 RRab, 2,865 RRc). The metallicity distribution shows a mean value of <[Fe/H]> = -1.51\pm0.01, and {\sigma}(standard deviation)= 0.41 dex with a long metal-poor tail approaching [Fe/H] = -3 and a sharp metal-rich tail approaching solar iron abundance. The RRab variables are more metal-rich (<[Fe/H]>ab = -1.48\pm0.01, {\sigma} = 0.41 dex) than RRc variables (<[Fe/H]>c = -1.58\pm0.01, {\sigma} = 0.40 dex). The relative fraction of RRab variables in the Bailey diagram (visual amplitude vs period) located along the short-period (more metal-rich) and the long-period (more metal-poor) sequences are 80% and 20\%, while RRc variables display an opposite trend, namely 30\% and 70\%. We found that the pulsation period of both RRab and RRc variables steadily decreases when moving from the metal-poor to the metal-rich regime. The visual amplitude shows the same trend, but RRc amplitudes are almost two times more sensitive than RRab amplitudes to metallicity. We also investigated the dependence of the population ratio (Nc/Ntot) of field RRLs on the metallicity and we found that the distribution is more complex than in globular clusters. The population ratio steadily increases from ~0.25 to ~0.36 in the metal-poor regime, it decreases from ~0.36 to ~0.18 for -1.8 < [Fe/H] < -0.9 and it increases to a value of ~0.3 approaching solar iron abundance., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables. We collected the largest spectroscopic catalog of RR Lyrae (RRLs) including $\approx$20,000 high-, medium- and low-resolution spectra for $\approx$10,000 RRLs. We provide the analytical forms of radial velocity curve (RVC) templates. These were built using 36 RRLs (31 fundamental -- split into three period bins -- and 5 first overtone pulsators) with well-sampled RVCs based on three groups of metallic lines (Fe, Mg, Na) and four Balmer lines (H$_\alpha$, H$_\beta$, H$_\gamma$, H$_\delta$). We tackled the long-standing problem of the reference epoch to anchor light curve and RVC templates. For the $V$-band, we found that the residuals of the templates anchored to the phase of the mean magnitude along the rising branch are $\sim$35\% to $\sim$45\% smaller than those anchored to the phase of maximum light. For the RVC, we used two independent reference epochs for metallic and Balmer lines and we verified that the residuals of the RVC templates anchored to the phase of mean RV are from 30\% (metallic lines) up to 45\% (Balmer lines) smaller than those anchored to the phase of minimum RV. We validated our RVC templates by using both the single- and the three-phase points approach. We found that barycentric velocities based on our RVC templates are two-three times more accurate than those available in the literature. We applied the current RVC templates to Balmer lines RVs of RRLs in the globular NGC~3201 collected with MUSE at VLT. We found the cluster barycentric RV of $V_{\gamma}$=496.89$\pm$8.37(error)$\pm$3.43 (standard deviation) km/s, which agrees well with literature estimates.

We provide the largest and most homogeneous sample of $\alpha$-element (Mg, Ca, Ti) and iron abundances for field RR Lyrae (RRLs, 162 variables) by using high-resolution spectra. The current measurements were complemented with similar abundances available in the literature for 46 field RRLs brought to our metallicity scale. We ended up with a sample of old (t$\ge$ 10 Gyr), low-mass stellar tracers (208 RRLs: 169 fundamental, 38 first overtone, 1 mixed mode) covering three dex in iron abundance (-3.00$\le$[Fe/H]$\le$0.24). We found that field RRLs are $\sim$0.3 dex more $\alpha$-poor than typical Halo tracers in the metal-rich regime, ([Fe/H]$\ge$-1.2) while in the metal-poor regime ([Fe/H]$\le$-2.2) they seem to be on average $\sim$0.1 dex more $\alpha$-enhanced. This is the first time that the depletion in $\alpha$-elements for solar iron abundances is detected on the basis of a large, homogeneous and coeval sample of old stellar tracers. Interestingly, we also detected a close similarity in the [$\alpha$/Fe] trend between $\alpha$-poor, metal-rich RRLs and red giants (RGs) in the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy as well as between $\alpha$-enhanced, metal-poor RRLs and RGs in ultra faint dwarf galaxies. These results are supported by similar elemental abundances for 46 field Horizontal Branch (HB) stars. These stars share with RRLs the same evolutionary phase and the same progenitors. This evidence further supports the key role that old stellar tracers play in constraining the early chemical enrichment of the Halo and, in particular, in investigating the impact that dwarf galaxies have had in the mass assembly of the Galaxy.

The second phase of the APOGEE survey is providing near-infrared, high-resolution, high signal-to-noise spectra of stars in the halo, disk, bar and bulge of the Milky Way. The near-infrared spectral window is especially important in the study of the Galactic bulge, where stars are obscured by the dust and gas of the disk in its line-of-sight. We present a chemical characterisation of the globular cluster NGC 6544 with high-resolution spectroscopy. The characterisation of the cluster chemical fingerprint, given its status of "interloper" towards the Galactic bulge and clear signatures of tidal disruption in its core is crucial for future chemical tagging efforts. Cluster members were selected from the DR16 of the APOGEE survey, using chemo-dynamical criteria of individual stars. A sample of 23 members of the cluster was selected. An analysis considering the intra-cluster abundance variations, known anticorrelations is given. According to the RGB content of the cluster, the iron content and $\alpha$-enhancement are [Fe/H] $= -1.44 \pm 0.04$ dex and [$\alpha$/Fe] $= 0.20 \pm 0.04$ dex, respectively. Cluster members show a significant spread in [Fe/H] and [Al/Fe] that is larger than expected based on measurement errors. An [Al/Fe] spread, signal of an Mg-Al anticorrelation is observed and used to constraint the cluster mass budget, along with C, N, Mg, Si, K, Ca, and Ce element variations are discussed. Recent studies show that the inner Galactic regions host genuine bulge globular clusters, but also halo intruders, complex remnants of primordial building blocks, and objects likely accreted during major merging events. In this study we focus on the properties of M 28, a very old and massive cluster currently located in the Galactic bulge. We analysed wide-field infrared photometry collected by the VVV survey, VVV proper motions, and intermediate-resolution spectra in the calcium triplet range for 113 targets in the cluster area. Our results in general confirm previous estimates of the cluster properties available in the literature. We find no evidence of differences in metallicity between cluster stars, setting an upper limit of Delta[Fe/H]<0.08 dex to any internal inhomogeneity. We confirm that M 28 is one of the oldest objects in the Galactic bulge (13-14 Gyr). From this result and the literature data, we find evidence of a weak age-metallicity relation among bulge globular clusters that suggests formation and chemical enrichment. In addition, wide-field density maps show that M 28 is tidally stressed and that it is losing mass into the general bulge field. Our study indicates that M 28 is a genuine bulge globular cluster, but its very old age and its mass loss suggest that this cluster could be the remnant of a larger structure, possibly a primeval bulge building block., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The globular cluster AL~3 is old and located in the inner bulge. Three individual stars were observed with the Phoenix spectrograph at the Gemini South telescope. The wavelength region contains prominent lines of CN, OH, and CO, allowing the derivation of C, N, and O abundances of cool stars. We aim to derive C, N, O abundances of three stars in the bulge globular cluster AL3, and additionally in stars of NGC 6558 and HP1. The spectra of AL3 allows us to derive the cluster's radial velocity. For AL3, we applied a new code to analyse its colour-magnitude diagram. Synthetic spectra were computed and compared to observed spectra for the three clusters. We present a detailed identification of lines in the spectral region centred at 15555 A, covering the wavelength range 15525-15590 A. We analyse the near infrared colour magnitude diagram of a field including the giant molecular cloud G0.253+0.016 (a.k.a. The Brick) observed at high spatial resolution, with HAWK-I at the VLT. The distribution of red clump stars in a line of sight crossing the cloud, compared with that in a direction just beside it, and not crossing it, allow us to measure the distance of the cloud from the Sun to be 7.20, with a statistical uncertainty of +/-0.16 and a systematic error of +/-0.20 kpc. This is significantly closer than what is generally assumed, i.e., that the cloud belongs to the near side of the central molecular zone, at 60 pc from the Galactic center. This assumption was based on dynamical models of the central molecular zone, observationally constrained uniquely by the radial velocity of this and other clouds. Determining the true position of the Brick cloud is relevant because this is the densest cloud of the Galaxy not showing any ongoing star formation. This puts the cloud off by 1 order of magnitude from the Kennicutt-Schmidt relation between the density of the dense gas and the star formation rate. Several explanations have been proposed for this absence of star formation, most of them based on the dynamical evolution of this and other clouds, within the Galactic center region. We performed the largest and most homogeneous spectroscopic survey of field RR Lyraes (RRLs). We secured $\approx$6,300 high resolution (HR, R$\sim$35,000) spectra for 143 RRLs (111 fundamental, RRab; 32 first overtone, RRc). The atmospheric parameters were estimated by using the traditional approach and the iron abundances were measured by using an LTE line analysis. The resulting iron distribution shows a well defined metal-rich tail approaching solar iron abundance. This suggests that field RRLs experienced a complex chemical enrichment in the early halo formation. We used these data to develop a new calibration of the $\Delta$S method. This diagnostic, based on the equivalent widths of CaII K and three Balmer (H$_{\delta,\gamma,\beta}$) lines, traces the metallicity of RRLs. For the first time the new empirical calibration: i) includes spectra collected over the entire pulsation cycle; ii) includes RRc variables; iii) relies on spectroscopic calibrators covering more than three dex in iron abundance; iv) provides independent calibrations based on one/two/three Balmer lines. The new calibrations were applied to both SEGUE-SDSS and degraded HR spectra totalling 6,451 low resolution (LR, R$\sim$2,000) spectra for 5,001 RRLs (3,439 RRab, 1,562 RRc). This resulted in an iron distribution with a median of -1.55$\pm$0.01 and $\sigma$=0.51 dex, in good agreement with literature values. We also found that RRc are 0.10 dex more metal-poor than RRab variables, and have a distribution with a smoother metal-poor tail. This finding supports theoretical prescriptions suggesting a steady decrease in the RRc number when moving from metal-poor to metal-rich stellar environments., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

We developed a set of procedures to automatically detect and measure the DIB around 8620 {\AA} (the Gaia DIB) for a wide range of temperatures. The DIB profile is fit with a Gaussian function. Specifically, the DIB feature is extracted from the spectra of late-type stars by subtracting the corresponding synthetic spectra. For early-type stars we applied a specific model based on the Gaussian process that needs no prior knowledge of the stellar parameters. The method was tested on $\sim$5000 spectra from the Giraffe Inner Bulge Survey (GIBS). After validation, we obtained 4194 reasonable fitting results from the GIBS database. An EW versus $E(J\,{-}\,K_{\rm S})$ relation is derived as $E(J\,{-}\,K_{\rm S})\,{=}\,1.875\,({\pm}\,0.152)\,{\times}\,{\rm EW}\,{-}\,0.011\,({\pm}\,0.048)$, according to $E(B\,{-}\,V)/{\rm EW}\,{=}\,2.721$, which is highly consistent with previous results toward similar sightlines. After a correction based on the VVV database for both EW and reddening, the coefficient derived from individual GIBS fields, $E(J\,{-}\,K_{\rm S})/{\rm EW}\,{=}\,1.884\,{\pm}\,0.225$, is also in perfect agreement with literature values. Based on a subsample of 1015 stars toward the Galactic center within $-3^{\circ}\,{<}\,b\,{<}\,3^{\circ}$ and $-6^{\circ}\,{<}\,l\,{<}\,3^{\circ}$, we determined a rest-frame wavelength of the Gaia DIB as 8620.55 {\AA}. A Gaussian profile is proved to be a proper and stable assumption for the Gaia DIB as no intrinsic asymmetry is found., Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures

The detailed study of the Galactic bulge stellar population necessarily requires an accurate representation of the interstellar extinction particularly toward the Galactic plane and center, where the severe and differential reddening is expected to vary on sub-arcmin scales. Although recent infrared surveys have addressed this problem by providing extinction maps across the whole Galactic bulge area, dereddened color-magnitude diagrams near the plane and center appear systematically undercorrected, suggesting the need for higher resolutions. These undercorrections affect any stellar study sensitive to color (e.g. star formation history analysis via color-magnitude diagram fitting), either making them inaccurate or limiting them to small low/stable extinction windows where this value is better constrained. We aim at providing a high-resolution (2 arcmin to $\sim$ 10 arcsec) color excess map for the VVV bulge area, in $\mathrm{J}-\mathrm{K}_s$ color. We use the MW-BULGE-PSFPHOT catalogs sampling $\sim$ 300 deg$^2$ across the Galactic bulge ($|l| < 10^\circ$ and $-10^\circ < b < 5^\circ$) to isolate a sample of red clump and red giant branch stars, for which we calculate average $\mathrm{J}-\mathrm{K}_s$ color in a fine spatial grid in $(l, b)$ space. We obtain a E$(\mathrm{J}-\mathrm{K}_s)$ map spanning the VVV bulge area of roughly 300 deg$^2$, with the equivalent to a resolution between $\sim$ 1 arcmin for bulge outskirts ($l < -6^\circ$) to below 20 arcsec within the central $|l| < 1^\circ$, and below 10 arcsec for the innermost area ($|l| < 1^\circ$ and $|b| < 3^\circ$). The study of resolved stellar populations in the Milky Way and other Local Group galaxies can provide us with a fossil record of their chemo-dynamical and star-formation histories over timescales of many billions of years. In the galactic components and stellar systems of the Milky Way and its satellites, individual stars can be resolved. Therefore, they represent a unique laboratory in which to investigate the details of the processes behind the formation and evolution of the disc and dwarf/irregular galaxies. MOONS at the VLT represents a unique combination of an efficient infrared multi-object spectrograph and a large-aperture 8-m-class telescope which will sample the cool stellar populations of the dense central regions of the Milky Way and its satellites, delivering accurate radial velocities, metallicities, and other chemical abundances for several millions of stars over its lifetime (see Cirasuolo et al., this issue). MOONS will observe up to 1000 targets across a 25-arcminute field of view in the optical and near-infrared (0.6-1.8 micron) simultaneously. The Galactic Center region, including the nuclear disk, has until recently been largely avoided in chemical census studies because of extreme extinction and stellar crowding. Making use of the latest APOGEE data release (DR16), we are able for the first time to study cool AGB stars and supergiants in this region. The stellar parameters of five known AGB stars and one supergiant star (VR 5-7) show that their location is well above the tip of the RGB.We study metallicities of 157 M giants situated within 150 pc of the Galactic center from observations obtained by the APOGEE survey with reliable stellar parameters from the APOGEE/ASPCAP pipeline making use of the cool star grid down to 3200 K. Distances, interstellar extinction values, and radial velocities were checked to confirm that these stars are indeed situated in the Galactic Center region. We detect a clear bimodal structure in the metallicity distribution function, with a dominant metal-rich peak of [Fe/H] ~ +0.3 dex and a metal-poor peak around [Fe/H]= -0.5 dex, which is 0.2 dex poorer than Baade's Window. The alpha-elements Mg, Si, Ca, and O show a similar trend to the Galactic Bulge. The metal-poor component is enhanced in the alpha-elements, suggesting that this population could be associated with the classical bulge and a fast formation scenario. We find a clear signature of a rotating nuclear stellar disk and a significant fraction of high velocity stars with $\rm v_{gal} > 300\,km/s$; the metal-rich stars show a much higher rotation velocity ($\rm \sim 200\,km/s$) with respect to the metal-poor stars ($\rm \sim 140\,km/s$). The chemical abundances as well as the metallicity distribution function suggest that the nuclear stellar disc and the nuclear star cluster show distinct chemical signatures and might be formed differently., Comment: 12 pages, accepted for Astronomy&Astrophysics

We use data of $\sim$13,000 stars from the SDSS/APOGEE survey to study the shape of the bulge MDF within the region $|\ell|\leq11^\circ$ and $|b|\leq13^\circ$, and spatially constrained to ${\rm R_{GC}\leq3.5}$ kpc. We apply Gaussian Mixture Modeling and Non-negative Matrix Factorization decomposition techniques to identify the optimal number and the properties of MDF components. We find the shape and spatial variations of the MDF (at ${\rm [Fe/H]\geq-1}$ dex) are well represented as a smoothly varying contribution of three overlapping components located at [Fe/H]=+$0.32$, $-0.17$ and $-0.66$ dex. The bimodal MDF found in previous studies is in agreement with our trimodal assessment once the limitations in sample size and individual measurement errors are taken into account. The shape of the MDF and its correlations with kinematics reveal different spatial distributions and kinematical structure for the three components co-existing in the bulge region. We confirm the consensus physical interpretation of metal-rich stars as associated with the secularly evolved disk into a boxy/peanut X-shape bar. On the other hand, metal-intermediate stars could be the product of in-situ formation at high redshift in a gas-rich environment characterized by violent and fast star formation. This interpretation would help to link a present-day structure with those observed in formation in the center of high redshift galaxies. Finally, metal-poor stars may correspond to the metal-rich tail of the population sampled at lower metallicity from the study of RR Lyrae stars. The structure, kinematics, and chemical composition of the far side of the Milky Way disk, beyond the bulge, are still to be revealed. Classical Cepheids (CCs) are young and luminous standard candles. We aim to use a well-characterized sample of these variable stars to study the present time properties of the far side of the Galactic disk. A sample of 45 Cepheid variable star candidates were selected from near infrared time series photometry obtained by the VVV survey. We characterized this sample using high quality near infrared spectra obtained with VLT/X-Shooter, deriving radial velocities and iron abundances for all the sample Cepheids. This allowed us to separate the CCs, which are metal rich and with kinematics consistent with the disk rotation, from type II Cepheids (T2Cs), which are more metal poor and with different kinematics. We estimated individual distances and extinctions using VVV photometry and period-luminosity relations, reporting the characterization of 30 CCs located on the far side of the Galactic disk, plus 8 T2Cs mainly located in the bulge region, of which 10 CCs and 4 T2Cs are new discoveries. This is the first sizeable sample of CCs in this distant region of our Galaxy that has been spectroscopically confirmed. We use their positions, kinematics, and metallicities to confirm that the general properties of the far disk are similar to those of the well-studied disk on the solar side of the Galaxy. In addition, we derive for the first time the radial metallicity gradient on the disk's far side. Considering all the CCs with $R_{\mathrm{GC}} < 17\,\rm{kpc}$, we measure a gradient with a slope of $-0.062 \, \mathrm{dex\, kpc^{-1}}$ and an intercept of $+0.59 \, \rm{dex}$, which is in agreement with previous determinations based on CCs on the near side of the disk., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The Milky Way bulge is an important tracer of the early formation and chemical enrichment of the Galaxy. The abundances of different iron-peak elements in field bulge stars can give information on the nucleosynthesis processes that took place in the earliest supernovae. Cobalt (Z=27) and copper (Z=29) are particularly interesting.We aim to identify the nucleosynthesis processes responsible for the formation of the iron-peak elements Co and Cu. Methods. We derived abundances of the iron-peak elements cobalt and copper in 56 bulge giants, 13 of which were red clump stars. High-resolution spectra were obtained using FLAMES-UVES at the ESO Very Large Telescope by our group in 2000-2002, which appears to be the highest quality sample of high-resolution data on bulge red giants obtained in the literature to date. Over the years we have derived the abundances of C, N, O, Na, Al, Mg; the iron-group elements Mn and Zn; and neutron-capture elements. In the present work we derive abundances of the iron-peak elements cobalt and copper. We also compute chemodynamical evolution models to interpret the observed behaviour of these elements as a function of iron. The sample stars show mean values of [Co/Fe]~0.0 at all metallicities, and [Cu/Fe]~0.0 for [Fe/H]>-0.8 and decreasing towards lower metallicities with a behaviour of a secondary element. We conclude that [Co/Fe] varies in lockstep with [Fe/H], which indicates that it should be produced in the alpha-rich freezeout mechanism in massive stars. Instead [Cu/Fe] follows the behaviour of a secondary element towards lower metallicities, indicating its production in the weak s-process nucleosynthesis in He-burning and later stages. Isolated Local Group (LG) dwarf galaxies have evolved most or all of their life unaffected by interactions with the large LG spirals and therefore offer the opportunity to learn about the intrinsic characteristics of this class of objects. Here we explore the internal kinematic and metallicity properties of one of the three isolated LG dwarf spheroidal galaxies, i.e. the Tucana dSph. This is an intriguing system, as it has been found in the literature to have an internal rotation of up to 16 km/s, a much higher velocity dispersion than other dSphs of similar luminosity, and a possible exception to the too-big-too-fail problem. We present results for a new VLT/FORS2 spectroscopic dataset in the CaII triplet region for 50 candidate red giant branch stars in the direction of Tucana, which yielded line-of-sight velocity and metallicity ([Fe/H]) measurements of 39 effective members. This doubles the number of Tucana's stars with such measurements. In addition, we re-reduce and include in our analysis the other two spectroscopic datasets presented in the literature, the VLT/FORS2 sample by Fraternali et al. (2009) and the VLT/FLAMES one by Gregory et al. (2019). We measure a systemic velocity of $180.0\pm1.3$ km/s, consistently across the various datasets analyzed, and find that a dispersion-only model is moderately favored over models accounting also for internal rotation. Our best estimate of the internal velocity dispersion is $6.2_{-1.3}^{+1.6}$ km/s, much smaller than the values reported in the literature and in line with similarly luminous dSphs; this is consistent with Tucana not being an exception to the too-big-to-fail problem, nor living in a dark matter halo much more massive than those of its siblings. The bulge represents the best compromise between old and massive Galactic component, and as such its study is a valuable opportunity to understand how the bulk of the Milky Way formed and evolved. In addition, being the only bulge in which we can individually resolve stars in all evolutionary sequences, the properties of its stellar content provide crucial insights on the formation of bulges at large. We aim at providing a detailed and comprehensive census of the Milky Way bulge stellar populations by producing deep and accurate photometric catalogs of the inner ~300 sqdeg of the Galaxy. We perform DAOPHOT/ALLFRAME PSF-fitting photometry of multi-epochs J and Ks images provided by the VVV survey to obtain deep photometric catalogs. Artificial star experiments have been conducted on all images to properly assess the completeness and the accuracy of the photometric measurements. We present a photometric database containing nearly 600 million stars across the bulge area surveyed by the VVV. Through the comparison of derived color-magnitude diagrams of selected fields representative of different levels of extinction and crowding, we show the quality, completeness and depth of the new catalogs. With the exception of the fields located along the plane, this new photometry samples stars down to ~1-2 mag below the MS-TO with unprecedented accuracy. To demonstrate the tremendous potential inherent to this new dataset, we give few examples of possible applications such as: i) star counts studies through the dataset completeness map; ii) surface brightness map; and iii) cross-correlation with Gaia DR2. The database presented here represents an invaluable collection for the whole community, and we encourage its exploitation. The Galactic bulge has a bimodal metallicity distribution function: different kinematic, spatial, and, potentially, age distributions characterize the metal-poor and metal-rich components. Despite this observed dichotomy, which argues for different formation channels for those stars, the distribution of bulge stars in the $\alpha$-abundance versus metallicity plane has been found so far to be a rather smooth single sequence. We use data from the fourteenth data release of the APOGEE spectroscopic survey (DR14) to investigate the distribution in the Mg abundance (as tracer of the $\alpha$-elements)-versus-metallicity plane of a sample of stars selected to be in the inner region of the bulge. A clean sample has been selected from the DR14 using a set of data- and pipeline-flags to ensure the quality of their fundamental parameters and elemental abundances. An additional selection made use of computed spectro-photometric distances to select a sample of likely bulge stars as those with ${\rm R_{GC}\leq 3.5~kpc}$. We adopt magnesium abundance as an $\alpha$-abundance proxy for our clean sample as it has been proven to be the most accurate $\alpha$-element as determined by ASPCAP, the pipeline for data products from APOGEE spectra. From the distribution of our bulge sample in the [Mg/Fe]-versus-[Fe/H] plane, we found that the sequence is bimodal. This bimodality is given by the presence of a low-Mg sequence of stars parallel to the main high-Mg sequence over a range of $\sim 0.5$~dex around solar metallicity. The two sequences merge above ${\rm [Fe/H]\sim0.15~ dex}$ into a single sequence whose dispersion in [Mg/Fe] is larger than either of the two sequences visible at lower metallicity. The Galactic center (GC) is the densest region of the Milky Way. Variability surveys towards the GC potentially provide the largest number of variable stars per square degree within the Galaxy. However, high stellar density is also a drawback due to blending. Moreover, the GC is affected by extreme reddening, therefore near infrared observations are needed. We plan to detect new variable stars towards the GC, focusing on type II Cepheids (T2Cs) which have the advantage of being brighter than RR Lyrae stars. We perform parallel Lomb-Scargle and Generalized Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis of the $K_s$-band time series of the VISTA variables in the Via Lactea survey, to detect periodicities. We employ statistical parameters to clean our sample. We take account of periods, light amplitudes, distances, and proper motions to provide a classification of the candidate variables. We detected 1,019 periodic variable stars, of which 164 are T2Cs, 210 are Miras and 3 are classical Cepheids. We also found the first anomalous Cepheid in this region. We compare their photometric properties with overlapping catalogs and discuss their properties on the color-magnitude and Bailey diagrams. We present the most extensive catalog of T2Cs in the GC region to date. Offsets in E($J-K_s$) and in the reddening law cause very large ($\sim$1-2 kpc) uncertainties on distances in this region. We provide a catalog which will be the starting point for future spectroscopic surveys in the innermost regions of the Galaxy., Comment: A&A, accepted

Thanks to the recent wide-area photometric surveys, the number of star cluster candidates have risen exponentially in the last few years. Most detections, however, are based only on the presence of an overdensity of stars in a given region, or an overdensity of variable stars, regardless of their distance. As candidates, their detection has not been dynamically confirmed. Therefore, it is currently unknown how many, and which ones, of the published candidates, are true clusters, and which ones are chance alignments. We present a method to detect and confirm star clusters based on the spatial distribution, coherence in motion and appearance on the color-magnitude diagram. We explain and apply it to one new star cluster, and several candidate star clusters published in the literature. The presented method is based on data from the Second Data Release of Gaia complemented with data from the VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea survey for the innermost bulge regions. It consists of a nearest neighbors algorithm applied simultaneously over spatial coordinates, star color, and proper motions, in order to detect groups of stars that are close in the sky, move coherently and define narrow sequences in the color-magnitude diagram, such as a young main sequence or a red giant branch. Recent observational programmes are providing a global view of the Milky Way bulge that serves as template for detailed comparison with models and extragalactic bulges. A number of surveys (i.e. VVV, GIBS, GES, ARGOS, BRAVA, APOGEE) are producing comprehensive and detailed extinction, metallicity, kinematics and stellar density maps of the Galactic bulge with unprecedented accuracy. However, the still missing key ingredient is the distribution of stellar ages across the bulge. To overcome this limitation, we aim to age-date the stellar population in several bulge fields with the ultimate goal of deriving an age map of the Bulge. This paper presents the methodology and the first results obtained for a field along the Bulge minor axis, at $b=-6^\circ$. We use a new PSF-fitting photometry of the VISTA Variables in the V\'{i}a L\'{a}ctea (VVV) survey data to construct deep color-magnitude diagrams of the bulge stellar population down to $\sim$ 2 mag below the Main Sequence turnoff. We find the bulk of the bulge stellar population in the observed field along the minor axis to be at least older than $\sim$ 7.5 Gyr. In particular, when the metallicity distribution function spectroscopically derived by GIBS is used, the best fit to the data is obtained with a combination of synthetic populations with ages in between $\sim$ 7.5 Gyr and 11 Gyr. However, the fraction of stars younger than $\sim$ 10 Gyr strongly depends upon the number of Blue Straggler Stars present in the bulge. Simulations show that the observed color-magnitude diagram of the bulge in the field along the minor axis is incompatible with the presence of a conspicuous population of intermediate-age/young (i.e. $\lesssim 5$ Gyr) stars., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figues, Accepted for publication on A&A

We provide homogeneous optical (UBVRI) and near-infrared (JHK) time series photometry for 254 cluster (omega Cen, M4) and field RR Lyrae (RRL) variables. We ended up with more than 551,000 measurements. For 94 fundamental (RRab) and 51 first overtones (RRc) we provide a complete optical/NIR characterization (mean magnitudes, luminosity amplitudes, epoch of the anchor point). The NIR light curves of these variables were adopted to provide new and accurate light-curve templates for both RRc (single period bin) and RRab (three period bins) variables. The templates for the J and the H band are newly introduced, together with the use of the pulsation period to discriminate among the different RRab templates. To overcome subtle uncertainties in the fit of secondary features of the light curves we provide two independent sets of analytical functions (Fourier series, Periodic Gaussian functions). The new templates were validated by using 26 omega Cen and Bulge RRLs covering the four period bins. We found that the difference between the measured mean magnitude along the light curve and the mean magnitude estimated by using the template on a single randomly extracted phase point is better than 0.01 mag (sigma=0.04 mag). We also validated the template on variables for which at least three phase points were available, but without information on the phase of the anchor point. The accuracy of the mean magnitudes is ~0.01 mag (sigma=0.04 mag). The new templates were applied to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) globular Reticulum and by using literature data and predicted PLZ relations we found true distance moduli of 18.47+-0.10+-0.03 mag (J) and 18.49+-0.09+-0.05 mag (K). We also used literature optical and mid-infrared data and we found a mean true distance modulus of 18.47+-0.02+-0.06 mag, suggesting that Reticulum is ~1 kpc closer than the LMC., Comment: Submitted to A&A

The main aim of this experiment is to provide a complete census of old (t > 10 Gyr, RR Lyrae, type II Cepheids, red horizontal branch), intermediate age (red clump, Miras) and young (classical Cepheids) stellar tracers across the Galactic Bulge. To fully exploit the unique photometric quality of LSST images, we plan to perform a Shallow minisurvey (ugrizy, -20 < l < 20 deg, -15 < b < 10 deg) and a Deep minisurvey (izy, -20 < l < 20 deg, -3 < b < 3 deg). The former one is aimed at constraining the 3D structure of the galactic Bulge across the four quadrants, and in particular, the transition between inner and outer Bulge. The u,g,r,i,z,y LSST bands provide fundamental diagnostics to constrain the evolutionary properties of low and intermediate-mass stars when moving from a metal-poor to a metal-rich regime. The deep minisurvey is aimed at tracing RR Lyrae, Red Clump stars, Miras and classical Cepheids in highly reddened regions of the Galactic center. Although the globular clusters in the Milky Way have been studied for a long time, a significant fraction of them lack homogeneous metallicity and radial velocity measurements. In an earlier paper we presented the first part of a project to obtain metallicities and radial velocities of Galactic globular clusters from multiobject spectroscopy of their member stars using the ESO Very Large Telescope. In this paper we add metallicities and radial velocities for a new sample of 28 globular clusters, including in particular globular clusters in the MW halo and the Galactic bulge. Together with our previous results, this study brings the number of globular clusters with homogeneous measurements to $\sim 69$ \% of those listed in the W. Harris' catalogue. As in our previous work, we have used the CaII triplet lines to derive metallicities and radial velocities. For most of the clusters in this study, this is the first analysis based on spectroscopy of individual member stars. The metallicities derived from the CaII triplet are then compared to the results of our parallel study based on spectral fitting in the optical region and the implications for different calibrations of the CaII triplet line strengths are discussed. We also comment on some interesting clusters and investigate the presence of an abundance spread in the globular clusters here. Recent spectroscopic surveys of the Galactic bulge have unambiguously shown that the bulge contains two main components, that are best separated in their iron content, but also differ in spatial distribution, kinematics, and abundance ratios. The so-called metal poor (MP) component peaks at [Fe/H]~-0.4, while the metal rich (MR) one peaks at [Fe/H]$~+0.3. The total metallicity distribution function is therefore bimodal, with a dip at [Fe/H]~0. The relative fraction of the two components changes significantly across the bulge area. We provide, for the first time, the fractional contribution of the MP and MR stars to the stellar mass budget of the Galactic bulge, and its variation across the bulge area. We find that MP stars make up 48% of the total stellar mass of the bulge, within the region |l|<10, |b|<9.5, with the remaining 52% made up of MR stars. The latter dominate the mass budget at intermediate latitudes |b|~4, but become marginal in the outer bulge (|b|>8). The MP component is more axisymmetric than the MR one, and it is at least comparable, and possibly slightly dominant in the inner few degrees. As a result, the MP component, which does not follow the main bar, is not marginal in terms of the total mass budget as previously thought, and this new observational evidence must be included in bulge models. While the total radial velocity dispersion has a trend that follows the total stellar mass, when we examine the velocity dispersion of each component individually, we find that MP stars have higher velocity dispersion where they make up a smaller fraction of the stellar mass, and viceversa. In order to minimize environmental effects and gain an insight into the internal mechanisms that shape the properties of the early-type dwarf systems, we study one of the few isolated dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) of the Local Group (LG): Cetus. We obtained VLT/FORS2 spectra ($R\sim2600$) in the region of the nIR CaII triplet lines for 80 candidate red giant branch stars. The analysis yielded line-of-sight velocities and metallicities ([Fe/H]) for 54 bona fide member stars. The kinematic analysis shows that Cetus is a mainly pressure-supported ($\sigma_v = 11.0_{-1.3}^{+1.6}$ km/s), dark-matter-dominated system ($M_{1/2}/L_V = 23.9_{-8.9}^{+9.7} M_\odot/L_\odot$) with no significant signs of internal rotation. We find Cetus to be a metal-poor system with a significant [Fe/H] spread (median [Fe/H] = -1.71 dex, median-absolute-deviation = 0.49 dex), as expected for its stellar mass. We report the presence of a mild metallicity gradient compatible with those found in other dSphs of the same luminosity; we trace the presence of a stellar population gradient also in the spatial distribution of stars in different evolutionary phases in ancillary SuprimeCam photometric data. There are tentative indications of two chemo-kinematically distinct sub-populations, with the more metal-poor stars showing a hotter kinematics than the metal-richer ones. Furthermore, the photometric dataset reveals the presence of a foreground population that most likely belongs to the Sagittarius stream. This study represents a first comprehensive analysis of Cetus chemo-kinematic properties. Our results add Cetus to the growing scatter in stellar-dark matter halo properties in low-mass galactic systems. The Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) transformations and equations of motion of a gravity-two-form-dilaton system are derived from the product of two Yang-Mills theories in a BRST covariant form, to linear approximation. The inclusion of ghost fields facilitates the separation of the graviton and dilaton. The gravitational gauge fixing term is uniquely determined by those of the Yang-Mills factors which can be freely chosen. We report the detection of 1143 variable stars towards the Galactic bulge, including 320 previously uncatalogued variables, using time-series photometry extracted from data obtained with the VIMOS imager at the Very Large Telescope. Observations of the Sagittarius Window Eclipsing Extrasolar Planet Search (SWEEPS) field in the Galactic Bulge were taken over 2 years between March and October at a cadence of $\sim$ 4 days, enabling the detection of variables with periods up to $\sim$100 days. Many of these were already known, but we detected a significant number of new variables, including 26 Cepheids, a further 18 Cepheid candidates, and many contact binaries. Recent spectroscopic and photometric surveys are providing a comprehensive view of the MW bulge stellar population properties with unprecedented accuracy. This in turn allows us to explore the correlation between kinematics and stellar density distribution, crucial to constraint the models of Galactic bulge formation. GIBS revealed the presence of a velocity dispersion peak in the central few degrees of the Galaxy by consistently measuring high velocity dispersion in three central most fields. Due to suboptimal distribution of these fields, all being at negative latitudes and close to each other, the shape and extension of the sigma peak is poorly constrained. In this study we address this by adding new observations distributed more uniformly and in particular including fields at positive latitudes that were missing in GIBS.MUSE observations were collected in four fields at (l,b)=(0,+2),(0,-2),(+1,-1),(-1,+2). Individual stellar spectra were extracted for a number of stars comprised between ~500 and ~1200, depending on the seeing and the exposure time. Velocity measurements are done by cross-correlating observed stellar spectra in the CaT region with a synthetic template, and velocity errors obtained through Monte Carlo simulations, cross-correlating synthetic spectra with a range of different metallicities and different noise characteristics. We measure the central velocity dispersion peak within a projected distance from the Galactic center of ~280pc, reaching sigma~140 km/s at b=-1. This is in agreement with the results obtained previously by GIBS at negative longitude. The central sigma peak is symmetric with respect to the Galactic plane, with a longitude extension at least as narrow as predicted by GIBS. Oxygen and zinc in the Galactic bulge are key elements for the understanding of the bulge chemical evolution. Oxygen-to-iron abundance ratios provide a most robust indicator of the star formation rate and chemical evolution of the bulge. Zinc is enhanced in metal-poor stars, behaving as an $\alpha$-element, and its production may require nucleosynthesis in hypernovae. Most of the neutral gas at high redshift is in damped Lyman-alpha systems (DLAs), where Zn is also observed to behave as an alpha-element. The aim of this work is the derivation of the alpha-element oxygen, together with nitrogen, and the iron-peak element zinc abundances in 417 bulge giants, from moderate resolution (R~22,000) FLAMES-GIRAFFE spectra. For stars in common with a set of UVES spectra with higher resolution (R~45,000), the data are intercompared. We present the first spectroscopic abundance determination of iron, alpha-elements (Si, Ca and Ti) and sodium for the Mira variable V1 in the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 5927. We use high-resolution (R~ 28,000), high signal-to-noise ratio (~200) spectra collected with WINERED, a near-infrared (NIR) spectrograph covering simultaneously the wavelength range 0.91--1.35 micron. The effective temperature and the surface gravity at the pulsation phase of the spectroscopic observation were estimated using both optical (V) and NIR time-series photometric data. We found that the Mira is metal-rich ([Fe/H]=-0.55 \pm 0.15) and moderately alpha-enhanced ([alpha/Fe]=0.15 \pm 0.01, sigma=0.2). These values agree quite well with the mean cluster abundances based on high-resolution optical spectra of several cluster red giants available in the literature ([Fe/H]=-0.47 \pm 0.06, [alpha/Fe]=+0.24 \pm 0.05). We also found a Na abundance of +0.35 \pm 0.20 that is higher than the mean cluster abundance based on optical spectra (+0.18 \pm 0.13). However, the lack of similar spectra for cluster red giants and that of corrections for departures from local-thermodynamical equilibrium prevents us from establishing whether the difference is intrinsic or connected with multiple populations. We present a new complete Near-Infrared (NIR, $JHK_s$) census of RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) in the globular $\omega$ Cen (NGC 5139). We collected 15,472 $JHK_s$ images with 4-8m class telescopes over 15 years (2000-2015) covering a sky area around the cluster center of 60x34 arcmin$^2$. These images provided calibrated photometry for 182 out of the 198 cluster RRL candidates with ten to sixty measurements per band. We also provide new homogeneous estimates of the photometric amplitude for 180 ($J$), 176 ($H$) and 174 ($K_s$) RRLs. These data were supplemented with single-epoch $JK_s$ magnitudes from VHS and with single-epoch $H$ magnitudes from 2MASS. Using proprietary optical and NIR data together with new optical light curves (ASAS-SN) we also updated pulsation periods for 59 candidate RRLs. As a whole, we provide $JHK_s$ magnitudes for 90 RRab (fundamentals), 103 RRc (first overtones) and one RRd (mixed--mode pulsator). We found that NIR/optical photometric amplitude ratios increase when moving from first overtone to fundamental and to long-period (P>0.7 days) fundamental RRLs. Using predicted Period-Luminosity-Metallicity relations, we derive a true distance modulus of 13.674$\pm$0.008$\pm$0.038 mag (statistical error and standard deviation of the median)---based on spectroscopic iron abundances---and of 13.698$\pm$0.004$\pm$0.048 mag---based on photometric iron abundances. Using a unified formulation of $\mathcal{N} = 1, 2, 4, 8$, super Yang-Mills theories in $D = 3$ spacetime dimensions with fields valued respectively in $\mathbb{R, C, H, O}$, it was shown that tensoring left and right multiplets yields a Freudenthal magic square of $D = 3$ supergravities. Context: In the last six years, the VVV survey mapped 562 sq. deg. across the bulge and southern disk of the Galaxy. However, a detailed study of these regions, which includes $\sim 36$ globular clusters (GCs) and thousands of open clusters is by no means an easy challenge. High differential reddening and severe crowding along the line of sight makes highly hamper to reliably distinguish stars belonging to different populations and/or systems. Aims: The aim of this study is to separate stars that likely belong to the Galactic GC NGC 6544 from its surrounding field by means of proper motion (PM) techniques. Methods: This work was based upon a new astrometric reduction method optimized for images of the VVV survey. Results: Photometry over the six years baseline of the survey allowed us to obtain a mean precision of $\sim0.51$ mas/yr, in each PM coordinate, for stars with Ks < 15 mag. In the area studied here, cluster stars separate very well from field stars, down to the main sequence turnoff and below, allowing us to derive for the first time the absolute PM of NGC 6544. Isochrone fitting on the clean and differential reddening corrected cluster color magnitude diagram yields an age of $\sim$ 11-13 Gyr, and metallicity [Fe/H] = -1.5 dex, in agreement with previous studies restricted to the cluster core. We were able to derive the cluster orbit assuming an axisymmetric model of the Galaxy and conclude that NGC 6544 is likely a halo GC. We have not detected tidal tail signatures associated to the cluster, but a remarkable elongation in the galactic center direction has been found. The precision achieved in the PM determination also allows us to separate bulge stars from foreground disk stars, enabling the kinematical selection of bona fide bulge stars across the whole survey area.
