MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate gene expression; many of them act in the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), and RPE degeneration is known to be a critical factor in age‐related macular degeneration (AMD). Repeated injections with anti‐VEGFA (vascular endothelial growth factor A) are the only effective therapy in wet AMD. We investigated the correlation between the expression of 18 miRNAs involved in the regulation of the VEGFA gene in serum of 76 wet AMD patients and 70 controls. Efficacy of anti‐VEGFA treatment was evaluated by counting the number of injections delivered up to 12 years. In addition, we compared the relative numbers of deaths in patient with AMD and control groups. We observed a decreased expression of miR‐34‐5p, miR‐126‐3p, miR‐145‐5p and miR‐205‐5p in wet AMD patients as compared with controls. These miRNAs are involved in the regulation of angiogenesis, cytoprotection and protein clearance. No miRNA was significantly correlated with the treatment outcome. Wet AMD patients had greater mortality than controls, and their survival was inversely associated with the number of anti‐VEGFA injections per year. No association was observed between miRNA expression and mortality. Our study emphasizes the need to clarify the role of miRNA regulation in AMD pathogenesis.

Advances in genotypic technologies enable identification of possible associations between genetic variants of certain genes and increased risk of developing plaque psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis. The aim of the study was to analyze the NOTCH3 (6746T&gt, C) (rs1044009) and PSMA6 (-8C&gt, G) (rs1048990) polymorphisms and their role in genetic susceptibility to psoriasis. The study included 158 psoriatic patients and 100 healthy controls. The frequencies of the NOTCH3 genotypes differed between the psoriatic patients and healthy controls (p = 0.050). No differences were found in the distribution of PSMA6 genotypes and alleles between the psoriatic patients and healthy controls. The studied psoriatic patients presented a higher frequency of the CC genotype of PSMA6 compared to the healthy controls (8.8% vs. 2%, respectively). Psoriatic arthritis was more frequent among patients with the CC genotype of PSMA6 (p = 0.059). CC homozygosity of NOTCH3 was more commonly observed in the studied psoriatic patients than in the healthy controls (OR = 4.76, p= 0.032). The obtained data suggest that genetic variants of NOTCH3 (6746T&gt, C) and PSMA6 (-8C&gt, G) genes may play significant roles in psoriatic patients. Further studies are necessary to unequivocally determine their role as genetic risk factors of psoriasis development.

The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between body image and perseverance.Methods: The research was carried out amongst a cohort of 135 people with normal and overweight/obese body weight. The criterion determining body image in the study participants was an index in the form of a subjective assessment of body weight (too low/correct/too high). Perseverance was determined using a website with simple maze tasks. For the assessment of one’s nutritional status, the applied body mass index (BMI) was utilized. For the statistical analysis, the Student’s t-test and the r-Pearson correlation were used.Results: Respondents with a normal BMI were more persistent in performing the tasks, in comparison with those who possessed a BMI above the normal range. There was a positive correlation between the average time spent on one task and the BMI. People in either group of normal BMI or with an overweight BMI, who assessed their body weight as too high, had lower results of analyzed perseverance indicators than those who assessed their body weight as normal.Conclusion: This is the first study analyzing the relationship between body image with perseverance. Our results showed that perseverance is associated with body image. There was a correlation between the distractor resistance index and BMI. Antioxidant compounds such as glutathione and its enzymes have become the focus of attention of medical sciences. Glutathione, a specific tripeptide, is involved in many intercellular processes. The glutathione concentration is determined by the number of GAG repeats in gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase. GAG polymorphisms are associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia, berylliosis, diabetes, lung cancer, and nasopharyngeal tumors. Cancer cells with high glutathione concentration are resistant to chemotherapy treatment. The oxidized form of glutathione is formed by glutathione peroxidases (GPXs). The changes in activity of GPX1, GPX2, and GPX3 isoforms may be associated with the development of cancers, for example, prostate cancer or even colon cancer. Detoxification of glutathione conjugates is possible due to activity of glutathione S-transferases (GSTs). Polymorphisms in GSTM1, GSTP1, and GSTO1 enzymes increase the risk of developing breast cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma. Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidases (GGTs) are responsible for glutathione degradation. Increased activity of GGT correlates with adverse prognosis in patients with breast cancer. Studies on genes encoding glutathione enzymes are continued in order to determine the correlation between DNA polymorphisms in cancer patients.
