This article presents the theoretical development, application and researcher experience of using a web-based interactive mapping application on internet-connected tablets during fieldwork conducted with young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds in Adelaide, South Australia. The fieldwork contributed to a study which used Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory to explore how young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds (re)develop their social networks. The article contributes to discussions about novel data collection methods that are derived from and have the capacity to extend theory to answer specific research questions.The article concludes that while using a web-based interactive mapping application requires a degree of participant technological literacy, it can be an effective and appropriate method for research with recent young migrants with transnational networks and has the potential for broader application in any studies with any highly mobile populations or dispersed networks.
