Abstract In light of the crucial role of marine ecosystems and the escalating environmental conservation challenges, it is essential to conduct marine monitoring to help implement targeted environmental protection measures efficiently. Energy harvesting technologies, particularly triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), have great potential for prolonging the lifespan and enhancing the reliability of sensors in remote areas. However, the high internal resistance, low current, and friction-induced abrasion issues of TENGs limit their performance in practical applications. This work presents a rolling mode triboelectric nanogenerator that utilizes multi-tunnel grating electrodes and the opposite-charge-enhancement mechanism to harvest wave energy efficiently. The device achieves significant instantaneous and root mean square power density of 185.4 W/(m3·Hz) and 10.92 W/(m3·Hz), respectively. By utilizing stacked devices and an exclusively designed power management module, a self-powered ocean sensing system including computing and long-range wireless communication (0.8 km) capabilities was developed. Laboratory and in-situ ocean tests were conducted to assess and validate the system. This work offers a potential solution for the challenging deployment of marine self-powered sensing nodes.

A built-in wave energy converter (BI-WEC) is a type of WEC that is fully encapsulated within a floating body that is easy to integrate and promotes reliability. Significant advantages in integration and reliability make BI-WECs a promising pathway to achieve an in situ power supply for massive distributed marine equipment (such as ships, buoys, or USVs). A comprehensive review of the recent advances in built-in wave energy converters can help address the most relevant issues in BI-WEC development. This study enumerates recent progress on BI-WECs (energy capture, power take-off, and control) and summarizes the characteristics of various designs. Different design philosophies and technical pathways can be better understood through the classification and analysis offered by this study. This review helps to form a basic understanding of BI-WEC development to achieve in situ power sustainability for a large amount of distributed marine equipment in long-term sustained marine operations.

Wind energy holds potential for in-situ powering large-scale distributed wireless sensor nodes (WSNs) in the Internet of Things (IoT) era. To achieve high performance in wind energy harvesting, a coaxial counter-rotating triboelectric nanogenerator with lift–drag hybrid blades, termed CCR-TENG, has been proposed. The CCR-TENG, which can work in non-contact and soft-contact modes, realizes low-speed wind energy harvesting through a combination of counter-clockwise rotating lift-type blades and clockwise rotating drag-type blades. Non-contact CCR-TENG realizes low-speed wind energy harvesting at wind speeds as low as 1 m/s. The output of a CCR-TENG, working in soft-contact mode, achieves 41% promotion with a maximum short-circuit current of 0.11 mA and a peak surface power density of 6.2 W/m2 with two TENGs connected in parallel. Furthermore, the power density per unit of wind speed achieves 746 mW/m3·s/m. Consequently, two fluorescent lamps were successfully illuminated and six temperature sensors were continuously lit by the CCR-TENG. The reported CCR-TENG significantly improves low-speed environmental wind energy utilization and demonstrates broad application prospects for in-situ power supply of distributed wireless transmission devices and sensors in the era of the IoT.

The nano-delivery system with a dual biomimetic effect can penetrate deeper in tumor microenvironments (TMEs) and release sufficient antitumor drugs, which has attracted much attention. In this study, we synthesized erythrocyte-like mesoporous silica nanoparticles (EMSNs) as the core loaded with doxorubicin (DOX) and coated them with calcium phosphate (CaP) and erythrocyte membrane (EM) to obtain DOX/EsPMs. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM), fluorescent co-localization and protein bands of SDS-PAGE were used to confirm the complete fabrication of EsPMs. The EsPMs with erythrocyte-like shape exhibited superior penetration ability in in vitro diffusion and tumor-sphere penetration experiments. Intracellular Ca2+ and ROS detection experiments showed that the CaP membranes of EsPMs with pH-sensitivity could provide Ca2+ continuously to induce reactive oxide species’ (ROS) generation in the TME. The EM as a perfect “camouflaged clothing” which could confuse macrophagocytes into prolonging blood circulation. Hemolysis and non-specific protein adsorption tests proved the desirable biocompatibility of EsPMs. An in vivo pharmacodynamics evaluation showed that the DOX/EsPMs group had a satisfactory tumor-inhibition effect. These advantages of the nano-erythrocytes suggest that by modifying the existing materials to construct a nano-delivery system, nanoparticles will achieve a biomimetic effect from both their structure and function with a facilitated and sufficient drug release profile, which is of great significance for antitumor therapy.

Sound wave is an extensively existing mechanical wave, especially in marine and industrial plants where low-frequency acoustic waves are ubiquitous. The effective collection and utilization of sound waves provide a fresh new approach to supply power for the distributed nodes of the rapidly developing Internet of Things technology. In this paper, a novel acoustic triboelectric nanogenerator (QWR-TENG) was proposed for efficient low-frequency acoustic energy harvesting. QWR-TENG consisted of a quarter-wavelength resonant tube, a uniformly perforated aluminum film, an FEP membrane, and a conductive carbon nanotube coating. Simulation and experimental studies showed that QWR-TENG has two resonance peaks in the low-frequency range, which effectively extends the response bandwidth of acoustic–electrical conversion. The structural optimized QWR-TENG has excellent electrical output performance, and the maximum output voltage, short-circuit current and transferred charge are 255 V, 67 μA, and 153 nC, respectively, under the acoustic frequency of 90 Hz and sound pressure level of 100 dB. On this basis, a conical energy concentrator was introduced to the entrance of the acoustic tube, and a composite quarter-wavelength resonator-based triboelectric nanogenerator (CQWR-TENG) was designed to further enhance the electrical output. Results showed that the maximum output power and the power density per unit pressure of CQWR-TENG reached 13.47 mW and 2.27 WPa−1m−2, respectively. Application demonstrations indicated that QWR/CQWR-TENG has good capacitor charging performance and is expected to realize power supply for distributed sensor nodes and other small electrical devices.

In this study, we synthesized hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNs) coated with polydopamine (PDA) and a D-α-tocopheryl polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate (TPGS)-modified hybrid lipid membrane (denoted as HMSNs-PDA@liposome-TPGS) to load doxorubicin (DOX), which achieved the integration of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy (PTT). Dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2 adsorption/desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) were used to show the successful fabrication of the nanocarrier. Simultaneously, in vitro drug release experiments showed the pH/NIR-laser-triggered DOX release profiles, which could enhance the synergistic therapeutic anticancer effect. Hemolysis tests, non-specific protein adsorption tests, and in vivo pharmacokinetics studies exhibited that the HMSNs-PDA@liposome-TPGS had a prolonged blood circulation time and greater hemocompatibility compared with HMSNs-PDA. Cellular uptake experiments demonstrated that HMSNs-PDA@liposome-TPGS had a high cellular uptake efficiency. In vitro and in vivo antitumor efficiency evaluations showed that the HMSNs-PDA@liposome-TPGS + NIR group had a desirable inhibitory activity on tumor growth. In conclusion, HMSNs-PDA@liposome-TPGS successfully achieved the synergistic combination of chemotherapy and photothermal therapy, and is expected to become one of the candidates for the combination of photothermal therapy and chemotherapy antitumor strategies.

Acoustic energy, especially broadband low-frequency sound energy is part of the environmental mechanical energy acquisition cannot be ignored. Herein, a multi-tube parallel Helmholtz resonator-based triboelectric nanogenerator (MH-TENG) is investigated to reap sound energy in low-frequency noise environments. The designed MH-TENG consists of a modified Helmholtz resonator and a thin-film TENG transducer. The core materials of the TENG transducer are aluminum, FEP film, and carbon. To further clarify the influence of the modified Helmholtz resonator on the conversion performance of MH-TENG, the acoustic characteristics of the improved resonators are systematically studied. A series of experiments show that the multi-tube parallel Helmholtz resonator structure has a better sound wave collection effect. Meanwhile, the flexible film TENG can reduce the optimal output frequency of the device. The power generation performance and the bandwidth of the MH-TENG are significantly improved by adopting a multi-tube Helmholtz resonator. Within the frequency bandwidth range of 230 Hz, MH-TENG can effectively improve the efficiency of acoustic energy harvesting. 110 LEDs and an electronic thermometer can be powered by the sound-driven MH-TENG. In addition, the MH-TENG has a good capacitor charging performance, which is conducive to its application in ambient sound energy harvesting.

Exhaust gas flow takes a vital position in the assessment of ship exhaust emissions, and it is essential to develop a self-powered and robust exhaust gas flow sensor in such a harsh working environment. In this work, a bearing type triboelectric nanogenerator (B-TENG) for exhaust gas flow sensing is proposed. The rolling of the steel balls on PTFE film leads to an alternative current generated, which realizes self-powered gas flow sensing. The influence of ball materials and numbers is systematically studied, and the B-TENG with six steel balls is confirmed according to the test result. After design optimization, it is successfully applied to monitor the gas flow with the linear correlation coefficient higher than 0.998 and high output voltage from 25 to 106 V within the gas flow of 2.5–14 m/s. Further, the output voltage keeps stable at 70 V under particulate matter concentration of 50–120 mg/m3. And the output performance of the B-TENG after heating at 180 °C for 10 min is also surveyed. Moreover, the mean error of the gas flow velocity by the B-TENG and a commercial gas flow sensor is about 0.73%. The test result shows its robustness and promising perspective in exhaust gas flow sensing. Therefore, the present B-TENG has a great potential to apply for self-powered and robust exhaust gas flow monitoring towards Green Ship.

Pervasive and continuous energy solutions are highly desired in the era of the Internet of Things for powering wide-range distributed devices/sensors. Wind energy has been widely regarded as an ideal energy source for distributed devices/sensors due to the advantages of being sustainable and renewable. Herein, we propose a high-performance flag-type triboelectric nanogenerator (HF-TENG) to efficiently harvest widely distributed and highly available wind energy. The HF-TENG is composed of one piece of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane and two carbon-coated polyethylene terephthalate (PET) membranes with their edges sealed up. Two ingenious internal-structure designs significantly improve the output performance. One is to place the supporting sponge strips between the PTFE and the carbon electrodes, and the other is to divide the PTFE into multiple pieces to obtain a multi-degree of freedom. Both methods can improve the degree of contact and separation between the two triboelectric materials while working. When the pair number of supporting sponge strips is two and the degree of freedom is five, the maximum voltage and current of HF-TENG can reach 78 V and 7.5 μA, respectively, which are both four times that of the untreated flag-type TENG. Additionally, the HF-TENG was demonstrated to power the LEDs, capacitors, and temperature sensors. The reported HF-TENG significantly promotes the utilization of the ambient wind energy and sheds some light on providing a pervasive and sustainable energy solution to the distributed devices/sensors in the era of the Internet of Things.

This study aims to introduce and discuss the recent research, development and application of wave energy marine buoys. The topic becomes increasingly appealing after the observation that wave energy technologies have been evolving in the recent decades, yet have not reached convergence. The power supply is usually the bottleneck for marine distributed systems such as buoys. Wave energy technologies are especially useful in this sense, as they can capture and convert the promising “native” renewable energy in the ocean (i.e., wave energy) into electricity. The paper enumerates the recent developments in wave energy capture (e.g., oscillating bodies) and power take-off (e.g., nanogenerators). The study also introduces the typical marine buoys and discusses the applicability of wave energy technologies on them. It is concluded that the wave energy technologies could be implemented as a critical addition to the comprehensive power solution of marine distributed systems. Wave energy buoys are likely to differentiate into “wave energy converter buoys” and “wave-energy-powered buoys”, which is indicated by the ratio of the generated power to the load power.

Harvesting acoustic energy in the environment and converting it into electricity can provide essential ideas for self-powering the widely distributed sensor devices in the age of the Internet of Things. In this study, we propose a low-cost, easily fabricated and high-performance coniform Helmholtz resonator-based Triboelectric Nanogenerator (CHR-TENG) with the purpose of acoustic energy harvesting. Output performances of the CHR-TENG with varied geometrical sizes were systematically investigated under different acoustic energy conditions. Remarkably, the CHR-TENG could achieve a 58.2% higher power density per unit of sound pressure of acoustic energy harvesting compared with the ever-reported best result. In addition, the reported CHR-TENG was demonstrated by charging a 1000 μF capacitor up to 3 V in 165 s, powering a sensor for continuous temperature and humidity monitoring and lighting up as many as five 0.5 W commercial LED bulbs for acoustic energy harvesting. With a collection features of high output performance, lightweight, wide frequency response band and environmental friendliness, the cleverly designed CHR-TENG represents a practicable acoustic energy harvesting approach for powering sensor devices in the age of the Internet of Things.

This work explored absorption efficacy via an in vivo imaging system and parallel artificial membrane penetration in indomethacin (IMC) solid dispersion (SD) systems. Two different polymer excipients—hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) and Kollicoat IR as precipitation inhibitors (PIs)—combined with mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) as carriers were investigated. The IMC−SDs were prepared using the solvent evaporation method and characterized by solubility analysis, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was confirmed that IMC successfully changed into an amorphous state after loading into the designed carriers. The in vitro release and stability experiments were conducted to examine the in vitro dissolution rates of IMC−SDs combined with HPMC and Kollicoat IR as PIs which both improved approximately three-fold to that of the pure drug. Finally, in vivo studies and in vitro parallel artificial membrane penetration (PAMPA) experiments ensured the greater ability of enhancing the dissolution rates of pure IMC in the gastrointestinal tract by oral delivery. In brief, this study highlights the prominent role of HPMC and Kollicoat IR as PIs in MSN SD systems in improving the bioavailability and gastrointestinal oral absorption efficiency of indomethacin.

In this study, supercritical fluid (SCF) technology was applied to prepare reliable solid dispersions of pharmaceutical compounds with limited bioavailability using ibuprofen (IBU) as a model compound. Solid-state characterization of the dispersions was conducted by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The PXRD and DSC results suggested that the amorphous form of IBU was maintained in the solid dispersions. Furthermore, in vitro dissolution and in vivo pharmacokinetic (PK) studies in rats were also performed. The dissolution performance of the SCF-prepared IBU dispersions was significantly improved compared to that of the physical mixtures of crystalline IBU and a polymer. In addition, the PK results revealed that the SCF-prepared IBU dispersions produced remarkably high blood drug concentrations (both the AUC and Cmax) and a rapid absorption rate (Tmax). Finally, molecular modeling was used to evaluate the binding energy of interactions between IBU and the polymers. The negative binding energy suggests a relatively stable system. Hence, SCF technology can be used as a very effective approach to prepare IBU solid dispersions with good physical stability and enhanced in vitro and in vivo performance.

Abstract Accurate segmentation of multiple organs in the head, neck, chest, and abdomen from medical images is an essential step in computer-aided diagnosis, surgical navigation, and radiation therapy. In the past few years, with a data-driven feature extraction approach and end-to-end training, automatic deep learning-based multi-organ segmentation methods have far outperformed traditional methods and become a new research topic. This review systematically summarizes the latest research in this field. We searched Google Scholar for papers published from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2023, using keywords “multi-organ segmentation” and “deep learning”, resulting in 327 papers. We followed the PRISMA guidelines for paper selection, and 195 studies were deemed to be within the scope of this review. We summarized the two main aspects involved in multi-organ segmentation: datasets and methods. Regarding datasets, we provided an overview of existing public datasets and conducted an in-depth analysis. Concerning methods, we categorized existing approaches into three major classes: fully supervised, weakly supervised and semi-supervised, based on whether they require complete label information. We summarized the achievements of these methods in terms of segmentation accuracy. In the discussion and conclusion section, we outlined and summarized the current trends in multi-organ segmentation.

To research the emotional interaction between customers and service staff, single-modal stimuli are being used to activate subjects’ emotions while multimodal emotion stimuli with better efficiency are often neglected. This study aims to construct a multimodal emotion stimuli database (CCSIAS) with video records of real work status of 29 service staff and audio clips of interactions between customers and service staff by setting up wide-angle cameras and searching in company’s Ocean Engine for 15 consecutive days. First, we developed a tool to assess the emotional statuses of customers and service staff in Study 1. Second, 40 Masters and PhD students were invited to assess the audio and video data to evaluate the emotional states of customers and service staff in Study 2, using the tools developed in Study 1. Third, 118 participants were recruited to test the results from Study 2 to ensure the stability of the derived data. The results showed that 139 sets of stable emotional audio & video data were constructed (26 sets were high, 59 sets were medium and 54 sets were low). The amount of emotional information is important for the effective activation of participants’ emotional states, and the degree of emotional activation of video data is significantly higher than that of the audio data. Overall, it was shown that the study of emotional interaction phenomena requires a multimodal dataset. The CCSIAS (https://osf.io/muc86/) can extend the depth and breadth of emotional interaction research and can be applied to different emotional states between customers and service staff activation in the fields of organizational behavior and psychology.

Abstract The four‐level nested neutral point clamped (4L‐NNPC) converter is a new multi‐level converter with a simple topology, which is suitable for the medium‐voltage application. But it has voltage balancing problems under the low output frequency condition. A space virtual vector modulation (SVVM) algorithm is introduced in this paper, and the dwell time formulas are given. It uses the synthesis between vectors to optimize the dwell time of each level in the virtual vector, in order to balance the flying capacitor voltage in the carrier period. In order to explore the boundary of the voltage regulation ability of the 4L‐NNPC converter, this paper analyses the mechanism of the voltage fluctuation of the flying capacitors and derives the voltage fluctuation formulas. The voltage regulation ability is calculated in different sectors, and the influence of the modulation ratio and power factor is explored. Finally, the voltage regulation ability under the sudden load and the flying capacitor voltage deviating from the rated value were investigated through simulation and experiments, which verified the correctness of the proposed theory.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a serious clinical disease. Due to the deformability and fragility of the spinal cord, overly rigid hydrogels cannot be used to treat SCI. Hence, we used TPA and Laponite to develop a hydrogel with shear-thinning ability. This hydrogel exhibits good deformation, allowing it to match the physical properties of the spinal cord; additionally, this hydrogel scavenges ROS well, allowing it to inhibit the lipid peroxidation caused by ferroptosis. According to the in vivo studies, the TPA@Laponite hydrogel could synergistically inhibit ferroptosis by improving vascular function and regulating iron metabolism. In addition, dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) were introduced into the TPA@Laponite hydrogel to regulate the ratios of excitatory and inhibitory synapses. It was shown that this combination biomaterial effectively reduced muscle spasms and promoted recovery from SCI.

Introduction: Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a fatal chronic lung disease that causes structural damage and decreased lung function and has a poor prognosis. Currently, there is no medicine that can truly cure PF. Vitamin E (VE) is a group of natural antioxidants with anticancer and antimutagenic properties. There have been a few reports about the attenuation of PF by VE in experimental animals, but the molecular mechanisms are not fully understood.Methods: Bleomycin-induced PF (BLM-PF) mouse model, and cultured mouse primary lung fibroblasts and MLE 12 cells were utilized. Pathological examination of lung sections, immunoblotting, immunofluorescent staining, and real-time PCR were conducted in this study.Results: We confirmed that VE significantly delayed the progression of BLM-PF and increased the survival rates of experimental mice with PF. VE suppressed the pathological activation and fibrotic differentiation of lung fibroblasts and epithelial-mesenchymal transition and alleviated the inflammatory response in BLM-induced fibrotic lungs and pulmonary epithelial cells in vitro. Importantly, VE reduced BLM-induced ferritin expression in fibrotic lungs, whereas VE did not exhibit iron chelation properties in fibroblasts or epithelial cells in vitro. Furthermore, VE protected against mitochondrial dysmorphology and normalized mitochondrial protein expression in BLM-PF lungs. Consistently, VE suppressed apoptosis in BLM-PF lungs and pulmonary epithelial cells in vitro.Discussion: Collectively, VE markedly inhibited BLM-induced PF through a complex mechanism, including improving iron metabolism and mitochondrial structure and function, mitigating inflammation, and decreasing the fibrotic functions of fibroblasts and epithelial cells. Therefore, VE presents a highly potential therapeutic against PF due to its multiple protective effects with few side effects.

In the voltage source power electronic converter, DC-link capacitors usually work as buffering elements between the DC and AC sides. The high failure rate and large space occupied by the DC-link capacitors directly affect the reliability and power density of the converters. The analysis and calculation of the DC-link capacitor current is crucial to achieve the refined design of converters. In this work, the analysis and calculation methods of DC-link capacitor current are divided into three categories, according to the calculation principle, namely, simulation method, RMS analysis method, and spectral analysis method, and their calculation methods are summarized. First, the types of capacitors and their characteristics are briefly introduced. Second, the three-phase two-level converter is taken as an example to introduce the basic principles, calculation steps, application scope, advantages, and disadvantages of the latter two methods in detail, as well as the influence of non-ideal factors, such as the output ripple on the calculation results. This work also discusses the calculation of the multi-level converter’s DC-link capacitor current spectrum and the current characteristics of multi-phase converters, which are rarely reported. Third, the problem of resonance between the DC-link capacitors and the DC bus inductor is introduced. For the distributed arrangement of multiple DC-link capacitors on DC bus converters, this study proposes a method based on a constant current source equivalent circuit, which can accurately calculate the DC-link capacitor current spectrum that is affected by loop current and resonance. Finally, the current problems and future directions of the DC-link capacitor design are pointed out.

Background: Clinically, physicians diagnose portal vein diseases on abdominal CT angiography (CTA) images scanned in the hepatic arterial phase (H-phase), portal vein phase (P-phase) and equilibrium phase (E-phase) simultaneously. However, existing studies typically segment the portal vein on P-phase images without considering other phase images. Method: We propose a method for segmenting portal veins on multiphase images based on unsupervised domain transfer and pseudo labels by using annotated P-phase images. Firstly, unsupervised domain transfer is performed to make the H-phase and E-phase images of the same patient approach the P-phase image in style, reducing the image differences caused by contrast media. Secondly, the H-phase (or E-phase) image and its style transferred image are input into the segmentation module together with the P-phase image. Under the constraints of pseudo labels, accurate prediction results are obtained. Results: This method was evaluated on the multiphase CTA images of 169 patients. The portal vein segmented from the H-phase and E-phase images achieved DSC values of 0.76 and 0.86 and Jaccard values of 0.61 and 0.76, respectively. Conclusion: The method can automatically segment the portal vein on H-phase and E-phase images when only the portal vein on the P-phase CTA image is annotated, which greatly assists in clinical diagnosis.

Abstract The ischemia and hypoxia microenvironment after spinal cord injury (SCI) makes SCI repair a challenging problem. With various stimulus, chances for neural stem cells (NSCs) to differentiate into neurons, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes are great and is considered as a potential source of the stem cell therapy to SCI. Our research used adeno-associated virus (AAV) to carry the target gene to transfect neural stem cells. Transfected NSCs can express nerve growth factor (NGF) navigated by five hypoxia-responsive elements (5HRE). Therefore, the 5HRE-NGF-NSCs could express NGF specifically in hypoxia sites to promote the tissue repair and function recovery. Based on the regeneration of neurocytes and promotion of the recovery found in SCI models, via locomotor assessment, histochemical staining and molecular examinations, our results demonstrated that 5HRE-NGF-NSCs could improve the motor function, neurons survival and molecules expression of SCI rats. Meanwhile, the downregulated expression of autophagy-related proteins indicated the inhibitive effect of 5HRE-NGF-NSCs on autophagy. Our research showed that 5HRE-NGF-NSCs contribute to SCI repair which might via inhibiting autophagy and improving the survival rate of neuronal cells. The new therapy also hampered the hyperplasia of neural glial scars and induced axon regeneration. These positive functions of 5HRE-NGF-NSCs all indicate a promising SCI treatment.

BackgroundEmotions play a decisive and central role in the workplace, especially in the service-oriented enterprises. Due to the highly participatory and interactive nature of the service process, employees’ emotions are usually highly volatile during the service delivery process, which can have a negative impact on business performance. Therefore, it is important to effectively judge the emotional states of customer service staff.MethodsWe collected data on real-life work situations of call center employees in a large company. Three consecutive studies were conducted: first, the emotional states of 29 customer service staff were videotaped by wide-angle cameras. In Study 1, we constructed scoring criteria and auxiliary tools of picture-type scales through a free association test. In Study 2, two groups of experts were invited to evaluate the emotional states of customer service staff. In Study 3, based on the results in Study 2 and a multimodal emotional recognition method, a multimodal dataset was constructed to explore how each modality conveys the emotions of customer service staff in workplace.ResultsThrough the scoring by 2 groups of experts and 1 group of volunteers, we first developed a set of scoring criteria and picture-type scales with the combination of SAM scale for judging the emotional state of customer service staff. Then we constructed 99 (out of 297) sets of stable multimodal emotion datasets. Based on the comparison among the datasets, we found that voice conveys emotional valence in the workplace more significantly, and that facial expressions have more prominant connection with emotional arousal.ConclusionTheoretically, this study enriches the way in which emotion data is collected and can provide a basis for the subsequent development of multimodal emotional datasets. Practically, it can provide guidance for the effective judgment of employee emotions in the workplace.

Cell-based transplantation strategies possess great potential for spinal cord injury (SCI) repair. Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) has been reported to have multiple neuro-promoting effects on developing and adult nervous system of mammals and considered a promising therapy for nerve injury following SCI. Human dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) are abundant stem cells with low immune rejection, which can be considered for cell replacement therapy. The purpose of this study was to investigate the roles of DPSCs which express bFGF under the regulation of five hypoxia-responsive elements (5HRE) using an adeno-associated virus (AAV-5HRE-bFGF-DPSCs) in SCI repairing model. In this study, DPSCs were revealed to differentiate into CD13+ pericytes and up-regulate N-cadherin expression to promote the re-attachment of CD13+ pericytes to vascular endothelial cells. The re-attachment of CD13+ pericytes to vascular endothelial cells subsequently increased the flow rate of blood in microvessels via the contraction of protuberance. As a result, increased numbers of red blood cells carried more oxygen to the damaged area and the local hypoxia microenvironment in SCI was improved. Thus, this study represents a step forward towards the potential use of AAV-5HRE-bFGF-DPSCs in SCI treatment in clinic.

Random flaps are widely used in tissue reconstruction, attributed to the lack of vascular axial limitation. Nevertheless, the distal end of the flap is prone to necrosis due to the lack of blood supply. Notoginseng triterpenes (NTs) are the active components extracted from Panax notoginseng, reducing oxygen consumption and improving the body’s tolerance to hypoxia. However, their role in random flap survival has not been elucidated. In this study, we used a mouse random skin flap model to verify that NT can promote cell proliferation and migration and that increasing blood perfusion can effectively improve the survival area of a skin flap. Our study also showed that the autophagy of random flaps after NT treatment was activated through the Beclin-1/VPS34/LC3 signaling pathway, and the therapeutic effect of NT significantly decreased after VPS34 IN inhibited autophagy. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that NT can significantly improve the survival rate of random flaps through the Beclin-1/VPS34/LC3 signaling pathway, suggesting that it might be a promising clinical treatment option.

Reducing neuronal death after spinal cord injury (SCI) is considered to be an important strategy for the renovation of SCI. Studies have shown that, as an important regulator of the development and maintenance of neural structure, acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF) has the role of tissue protection and is considered to be an effective drug for the treatment of SCI. Neural stem cells (NSCs) are rendered with the remarkable characteristics to self-replace and differentiate into a variety of cells, so it is promising to be used in cell transplantation therapy. Based on the facts above, our main aim of this research is to explore the role of NSCs expressing aFGF meditated by five hypoxia-responsive elements (5HRE) in the treatment of SCI by constructing AAV–5HRE–aFGF–NSCs and transplanting it into the area of SCI. Our research results showed that AAV–5HRE–aFGF–NSCs can effectively restore the motor function of rats with SCI. This was accomplished by inhibiting the expression of caspase 12/caspase 3 pathway, EIF2α–CHOP pathway, and GRP78 protein to inhibit apoptosis.
