The status of the Second Law of Thermodynamics, even in the 21st century, is not as certain as when Arthur Eddington wrote about it a hundred years ago. It is not only about the truth of this law, but rather about its strict and exhaustive formulation. In the previous article, it was shown that two of the three most famous thermodynamic formulations of the Second Law of Thermodynamics are non-exhaustive. However, the status of the statistical approach, contrary to common and unfounded opinions, is even more difficult. It is known that Boltzmann did not manage to completely and correctly derive the Second Law of Thermodynamics from statistical mechanics, even though he probably did everything he could in this regard. In particular, he introduced molecular chaos into the extension of the Liouville equation, obtaining the Boltzmann equation. By using the H theorem, Boltzmann transferred the Second Law of Thermodynamics thesis to the molecular chaos hypothesis, which is not considered to be fully true. Therefore, the authors present a detailed and critical review of the issue of the Second Law of Thermodynamics and entropy from the perspective of phenomenological thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, as well as kinetic theory. On this basis, Propositions 1–3 for the statements of the Second Law of Thermodynamics are formulated in the original part of the article. Proposition 1 is based on resolving the misunderstanding of the Perpetuum Mobile of the Second Kind by introducing the Perpetuum Mobile of the Third Kind. Proposition 2 specifies the structure of allowed thermodynamic processes by using the Inequality of Heat and Temperature Proportions inspired by Eudoxus of Cnidus's inequalities defining real numbers. Proposition 3 is a Probabilistic Scheme of the Second Law of Thermodynamics that, like a game, shows the statistical tendency for entropy to increase, even though the possibility of it decreasing cannot be completely ruled out. In this work, an anharmonic mass-in-mass system that can be employed as a nonlinear seismic metamaterial is represented as an equivalent anharmonic mass-spring system via an effective medium approach. The dispersion relation and the behavior of the effective mass as a function of the angular frequency obtained in the regime of weak anharmonicity deviate from those of the corresponding linear system because of the effect of the fourth-order potential anharmonicity. In the presence of anharmonic soft springs it is found a range of wave vectors close to the Brillouin border zone at which the group velocity of the acoustic and optical modes is negative, namely it is opposite to the phase velocity, and a wider band gap at the border of the first Brillouin zone with respect to that of the linear case. Both effects can be tuned by varying the anharmonicity strength. The huge band gap amplitude together with the strong reduction of the frequency of the acoustic mode could be exploited for the design of nonlinear seismic metamaterials at the basis of composite foundations operating in the stop band frequencies.

Both the static and the dynamical magnetic properties of a square array of circular permalloy dots, characterized by a magnetic vortex configuration of the magnetization, have been investigated by means of magneto-optical Kerr effect and of Brillouin light scattering (BLS) from thermally excited spin waves. The measured hysteresis loop can be satisfactorily reproduced by micromagnetic simulations, showing that the vortex configuration is stable over a wide range of applied field. The high frequency response of the dots was analyzed by BLS measurements performed under external magnetic field intensity large enough to uniformly magnetize the dots. Evidence is given of a marked discretization of the spin wave spectrum with respect to the case of the continuous permalloy film, where only one peak, corresponding to the Damon-Eshbach mode, was detected. The experimental frequencies have been compared to those calculated using a recently developed analytical model for a flat uniformly magnetized cylindrical dot. In this review, we provide a survey of the application of advanced first-principle methods on the theoretical modeling and understanding of novel electronic, optical, and magnetic properties of the spin-orbit coupled Ruddlesden–Popper series of iridates Sr n + 1 Ir n O 3 n + 1 (n = 1, 2, and ∞). After a brief description of the basic aspects of the adopted methods (noncollinear local spin density approximation plus an on-site Coulomb interaction (LSDA+U), constrained random phase approximation (cRPA), G W , and Bethe–Salpeter equation (BSE)), we present and discuss select results. We show that a detailed phase diagrams of the metal–insulator transition and magnetic phase transition can be constructed by inspecting the evolution of electronic and magnetic properties as a function of Hubbard U, spin–orbit coupling (SOC) strength, and dimensionality n, which provide clear evidence for the crucial role played by SOC and U in establishing a relativistic (Dirac) Mott–Hubbard insulating state in Sr 2 IrO 4 and Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7 . To characterize the ground-state phases, we quantify the most relevant energy scales fully ab initio—crystal field energy, Hubbard U, and SOC constant of three compounds—and discuss the quasiparticle band structures in detail by comparing G W and LSDA+U data. We examine the different magnetic ground states of structurally similar n = 1 and n = 2 compounds and clarify that the origin of the in-plane canted antiferromagnetic (AFM) state of Sr 2 IrO 4 arises from competition between isotropic exchange and Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interactions whereas the collinear AFM state of Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7 is due to strong interlayer magnetic coupling. Finally, we report the dimensionality controlled metal–insulator transition across the series by computing their optical transitions and conductivity spectra at the G W +BSE level from the the quasi two-dimensional insulating n = 1 and 2 phases to the three-dimensional metallic n = ∞ phase. (1) The aim of the study was to investigate the spatial and temporal characteristics of the airflow created by two commercially available non-contact tonometers: the CorvisST and the Ocular Response Analyser (ORA). (2) The airflow pressure was measured using a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) pressure sensor to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution. The airflow from the CorvisST and Ocular Response Analyser were mapped to a 600 µm and a 1 mm resolution grid, respectively. (3) Central airflow pressure of the CorvisST (96.4 ± 1.4 mmHg) was higher than that of the Ocular Response Analyser (91.7 ± 0.7 mmHg). The duration of the air-puffs also differed, with the CorvisST showing a shorter duration (21.483 ± 0.2881 ms) than that of the ORA (23.061 ± 0.1872 ms). The rising edge of the CorvisST airflow pressure profile demonstrated a lower gradient (+8.94 mmHg/ms) compared to that of the Ocular Response Analyser (+11.00 mmHg/ms). Both had similar decay response edges: CorvisST −11.18 mmHg/ms, Ocular Response Analyser −11.65 mmHg/ms. (4) The study presents a valid method to investigate the physical dimensions of the airflow pressure of non-contact tonometers. Novel findings relating to the magnitude, duration and spatial characteristics of the respective airflow pressures are reported. In this work, we put forward a prescription of achieving spin selective electron transfer by means of light irradiation through a tight-binding (TB) magnetic chain whose site energies are modulated in the form of well known Aubry–Andre–Harper (AAH) model. The interaction of itinerant electrons with local magnetic moments in the magnetic system provides a misalignment between up and down spin channels which leads to a finite spin polarization (SP) upon locating the Fermi energy in a suitable energy zone. Both the energy channels are significantly affected by the irradiation which is directly reflected in degree of spin polarization as well as in its phase. We include the irradiation effect through Floquet ansatz and compute spin polarization coefficient by evaluating transmission probabilities using Green's function prescription. Our analysis can be utilized to investigate spin dependent transport phenomena in any driven magnetic system with quasiperiodic modulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: The options for the treatment of K-Ras-driven lung tumors are currently limited. This study investigates the potential for non-thermal intervention against lung tumors using magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in a magnetic field. The MNPs for use in treating tumors were prepared by chemical methods. Simulations showed that the experimental platform can generate the desired magnetic field by avoiding any damaging rise in temperature and that the induced magnetic force can affect the cellular activities. Using MNPs in a magnetic field in this way can not only suppress the growth of tumor cells but also can strengthen the inhibitory effects of magnetic field stimulation on the lung tumors caused by the K-Ras mutations. K-Ras mutations result in normal cells dividing uncontrollably and becoming cancerous. The prognosis is currently poor for patients due to the lack of drugs that can effectively target these mutations. In this study, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) were prepared, characterized, and cooperated with a magnetic field to intervene in the growth of lung tumor cells. The rise in temperature of a stimulation coil was studied by numerical calculation. The non-thermal effects of MNPs under a magnetic force were analyzed. The cell experiments showed that the growth of A549 tumor cells slowed down. The result of a wound-healing assay also indicated that the migration of tumor cells was suppressed. Compared with magnetic stimulation without MNPs, MNPs enhanced the inhibitory effects of a magnetic field. This study suggests a new way to treat K-Ras driven lung tumors using non-thermal effects of MNPs without the side effects caused by thermal effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents the impact of sawdust conditioning from coniferous trees with a pulsed electric field (PEF) on the characteristics of the combustion heat. The study used four variants of electric field parameters, i.e., (I) 300 discharges with an electric field intensity of 25 kV·cm−1, (II) 150 discharges with an electric field intensity of 25 kV·cm−1, (III) 300 discharges with an electric field intensity of 30 kV·cm−1, (IV) 150 discharges with an electric field intensity of 30 kV·cm−1. It should be noted that the interval between successive discharges was 10 sec and it was constant for each variant of the experiment. A change in the characteristics of the heat of combustion was found under the influence of a pulsed electric field on sawdust from coniferous trees in each period of the measurement. The highest temperatures were achieved by the interaction of a pulsed electric field with a discharge pulse of 30 kV·cm−1 and the number of discharge cycles amounting to 300, whereas significantly lower temperature values were recorded with the discharge electric field intensity of 25 kV·cm−1. It was found that the longest times from the moment of ignition to reaching the maximum temperature were obtained for the material after the influence of PEF with an electric field intensity of 30 kV·cm−1 and the number of pulses 300 (IV combination), while the shortest time of the analyzed interval was stated for the first combination of the experiment (electric field intensity 25 kV·cm−1 and a number of pulses 150). The use of a pulsed electric field allows modeling the combustion time of a homogeneous material, which enables the improvement of the process control possibilities, and is also important information for the design of devices intended for biomass combustion.
