1. Analysis of Proanthocyanidins in Plant Materials Using Hydrophilic Interaction HPLC-QTOF-MS

Abstract

Proanthocyanidins (PACs) have been proven to possess a wide range of biological activities, but complex structures limit their study of structure–function relationships. Therefore, an efficient and general method using hydrophilic interaction high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (HILIC-QTOF-MS) was established to analyze PACs from different plant materials. This method was successfully applied to characterize PACs from Chinese bayberry (Myrica rubra Sieb. et Zucc.) leaves (BLPs), sorghum testa (STPs) and grape seeds (GSPs). BLPs with the degree of polymerization (DP) from 1 to 8 were separated. BLPs are mainly B-type prodelphinidins and A-type BLPs were first found in this study. STPs and GSPs belonging to procyanidins showed DP from 3 to 11 and 2 to 12, respectively. A-type linkages were found for every DP of STPs and GSPs, which were first found. These results showed that HILIC-QTOF-MS can be successfully applied for analyzing PACs from different plant materials, which is necessary for the prediction of their potential health benefits.

Abstract

Biorefineries of polyphenols from plant leaves maximize their commercial value for developing biomedicines and nutrients. However, condensed tannins (CTs) constitute extensive polyphenols from plant leaves, which hinders the maximization due to extremely low bioavailability. Therefore, a simple, and sustainable one-step method was established to simultaneously extract polyphenols and depolymerize CTs with only endogenous flavan-3-ols from Chinese bayberry leaves via acid catalysis, which markedly improved the bioavailability of total polyphenols. Afterward, purification of polyphenols from depolymerized extract was studied with specific polymeric resins. Silica C18 showed the highest absorption efficiency of total polyphenols, while Amberlite XAD-7 and XAD-2 presented high selectivity toward polyphenols with high and low molecular weight, respectively. Combined depolymerization of CTs and purification with Amberlite XAD-2 showed the highest bioavailability and cellular free-radical scavenging activity of total polyphenols, which proved to be an ideal methodology for improving the bioavailability and activity of polyphenols from plant leaves.

Abstract

Oleogelation based on emulsion using food-approved biopolymers is a feasible strategy to substitute solid fat with harmful trans and saturated fatty acids, providing food products with a better nutritional profile. However, oil with high content of unsaturated fatty acids is prone to oxidation, resulting in quality loss of food products. In the present study, proanthocyanidins from Chinese bayberry leaves (BLPs) were incorporated into emulsion-based oleogel to remedy the defect through the formation of colloidal complexes with gelatin. Oleogel stabilized with the colloidal complexes showed higher stability with lower oil loss and higher gel strength, compared to that with gelatin only. Then different polysaccharides were applied to further promote oleogel stability. However, polysaccharides abrogated the promotive effect of BLPs and resulted in comparable stability of oleogels with BLPs or not, which was confirmed with cryo-SEM observation. Then the application of oleogel with BLPs as margarine alternative was verified with batter properties, quality loss of cakes and oil stability in cakes. Batter properties of oleogel with BLPs were comparable to that without BLPs, and more close to margarine than oil. For quality loss, textural properties of oleogel cakes with BLPs or not resembled each other and were significantly better than oil cakes in hardness and chewiness and margarine cakes in cohesiveness. Particularly, BLPs were verified to retard oil oxidation in both oleogel and cakes prepared with oleogel. Overall, incorporation of BLPs into oleogel was feasible to improve its oil stability and keep its application in cake products.

4. Evolutionary game analysis of indoor radon mitigation with local government involvement

Abstract

Radon is the second leading risk factor for lung cancer after smoking. As a public policy, radon mitigation not only involves radon control technology or its cost-benefit analysis, but also includes the decision-making process of local governments. In this study, the evolutionary game theory was used to analyse the interaction between local governments and residents based on the subsidy of the central government. Considering the practical data in China, factors influencing the behaviour of local governments and residents were discussed using numerical simulations. The results indicated that radon mitigation is a fully government-promoted action; thus, its implementation largely depends on the subsidy of the central government and the share of radon control costs borne by the local government. The financial burden for both local governments and residents is a more important determinant than long-term health effects. The relatively poor local economic situation could limit the implementation of radon control. There would be a public policy paradox wherein cities or regions with higher radon risk would have lower willingness for radon control, mainly due to the significantly higher costs of radon control. This work provides reference data for decision-making to implement radon control and is expected to offer some suggestions for local governments.
