High Energy Physics - Experiment ,Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
In spring 2012 CERN provided two weeks of a short bunch proton beam dedicated to the neutrino velocity measurement over a distance of 730 km. The OPERA neutrino experiment at the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory used an upgraded setup compared to the 2011 measurements, improving the measurement time accuracy. An independent timing system based on the Resistive Plate Chambers was exploited providing a time accuracy of $\sim$1 ns. Neutrino and anti-neutrino contributions were separated using the information provided by the OPERA magnetic spectrometers. The new analysis profited from the precision geodesy measurements of the neutrino baseline and of the CNGS/LNGS clock synchronization. The neutrino arrival time with respect to the one computed assuming the speed of light in vacuum is found to be $\delta t_\nu \equiv TOF_c - TOF_\nu= (0.6 \pm 0.4\ (stat.) \pm 3.0\ (syst.))$ ns and $\delta t_{\bar{\nu}} \equiv TOF_c - TOF_{\bar{\nu}} = (1.7 \pm 1.4\ (stat.) \pm 3.1\ (syst.))$ ns for $\nu_{\mu}$ and $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$, respectively. This corresponds to a limit on the muon neutrino velocity with respect to the speed of light of $-1.8 \times 10^{-6} < (v_{\nu}-c)/c < 2.3 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% C.L. This new measurement confirms with higher accuracy the revised OPERA result., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Physics - Optics ,Quantum Physics - Abstract
A Brillouin-Wigner perturbation theory is developed for open electromagnetic systems which are characterised by discrete resonant states with complex eigenenergies. Since these states are exponentially growing at large distances, a modified normalisation is introduced that allows a simple spectral representation of the Green's function. The perturbed modes are found by solving a linear eigenvalue problem in matrix form. The method is illustrated on exactly solvable one- and three-dimensional examples being, respectively, a dielectric slab and a microsphere., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The OPERA detector at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory (LNGS) was used to measure the atmospheric muon charge ratio in the TeV energy region. We analyzed 403069 atmospheric muons corresponding to 113.4 days of livetime during the 2008 CNGS run. We computed separately the muon charge ratio for single and for multiple muon events in order to select different energy regions of the primary cosmic ray spectrum and to test the charge ratio dependence on the primary composition. The measured charge ratio values were corrected taking into account the charge-misidentification errors. Data have also been grouped in five bins of the "vertical surface energy". A fit to a simplified model of muon production in the atmosphere allowed the determination of the pion and kaon charge ratios weighted by the cosmic ray energy spectrum., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

A detailed study is presented of the expected performance of the ATLAS detector. The reconstruction of tracks, leptons, photons, missing energy and jets is investigated, together with the performance of b-tagging and the trigger. The physics potential for a variety of interesting physics processes, within the Standard Model and beyond, is examined. The study comprises a series of notes based on simulations of the detector and physics processes, with particular emphasis given to the data expected from the first years of operation of the LHC at CERN.

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
We have found a novel mechanism of spectral broadening and dephasing in quantum dots (QDs) due to the coupling to longitudinal-optical (LO) phonons. In theory, this mechanism comes into play only if the complete manifold of exciton levels (including those in the wetting-layer continuum) is taken into account. We demonstrate this nontrivial dephasing in different types of QDs, using the exactly solvable quadratic coupling model, here generalized to an arbitrary number of excitonic states., Comment: OECS10 contribution paper

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
This document reports on a series of experimental and theoretical studies conducted to assess the astro-particle physics potential of three future large-scale particle detectors proposed in Europe as next generation underground observatories. The proposed apparatus employ three different and, to some extent, complementary detection techniques: GLACIER (liquid Argon TPC), LENA (liquid scintillator) and MEMPHYS (\WC), based on the use of large mass of liquids as active detection media. The results of these studies are presented along with a critical discussion of the performance attainable by the three proposed approaches coupled to existing or planned underground laboratories, in relation to open and outstanding physics issues such as the search for matter instability, the detection of astrophysical- and geo-neutrinos and to the possible use of these detectors in future high-intensity neutrino beams., Comment: 50 pages, 26 figures

Condensed Matter - Other Condensed Matter - Abstract
It is widely believed that, due to its discrete nature, excitonic states in a quantum dot coupled to dispersionless LO phonons form everlasting mixed states (exciton polarons) showing no line broadening in the spectrum. This is indeed true if the model is restricted to a limited number of excitonic states in a quantum dot. We show, however, that extending the model to a large number of states results in LO phonon-induced spectral broadening and complete decoherence of the optical response., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
Memory and correlation effects in the interband absorption from quantum wells due to exciton-phonon dynamics are investigated. They are traced back to the frequency dependence and matrix character of the self energy arising in a 2nd Born theory. It is found that interpeak absorption increases with respect to the case in which this memory and correlation effects are neglected., Comment: NOEKS8 Proceedings

The full time-dependent four-wave mixing polarization in quantum dots is microscopically calculated, taking into account acoustic phonon-assisted transitions between different exciton states of the dot. Condensed Matter - Other Condensed Matter ,Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
Excitons in coupled quantum wells open the possibility to reach high densities close to equilibrium. In a recent experiment employing a lateral trap potential, a blue shift and a broadening of the exciton emission line has been seen (Snoke, SSC 134). The standard Hartree-Fock treatment can explain the blue shift but fails to give a finite broadening. Starting from the (spin-dependent) many-exciton Hamiltonian with direct and exchange potential, we present a dynamical T-matrix calculation for the single-exciton Green's function which is directly related to the frequency- and angle-resolved photoluminescence. The calculated spectrum is blue shifted and broadened due to exciton-exciton scattering. At high excitation, both the spectrum and the angular emission are getting narrow. This is a direct manifestation for off-diagonal long range order and a precursor of condensation., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures. Proceedings NOEKS 8 (Muenster 2006)

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
The excitonic absorption spectrum for a disordered quantum well in presence of exciton-acoustic phonon interaction is treated beyond the Markov approximation. Realistic disorder exciton states are taken from a microscopic simulation, and the deformation potential interaction is implemented. The exciton Green's function is solved with a self energy in second order Born quality. The calculated spectra differ from a superposition of Lorentzian lineshapes by enhanced inter-peak absorption. This is a manifestation of pure dephasing which should be possible to measure in near-field experiments., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
The optical exciton Aharonov-Bohm effect, i. e. an oscillatory component in the energy of optically active (bright) states, is investigated in nanorings. It is shown that a small effective electron mass, strong confinement of the electron, and high barrier for the hole, achieved e. g. by an InAs nanoring embedded in an AlGaSb quantum well, are favorable for observing the optical exciton Aharonov-Bohm effect. The second derivative of the exciton energy with respect to the magnetic field is utilized to extract Aharonov-Bohm oscillations even for the lowest bright state unambiguously. A connection between the theories for infinitesimal narrow and finite width rings is established. Furthermore, the magnetization is compared to the persistent current, which oscillates periodically with the magnetic field and confirms thus the non-trivial (connected) topology of the wave function in the nanoring., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
Optical transitions in a semiconductor quantum dot are theoretically investigated, with emphasis on the coupling to longitudinal optical phonons, and including excitonic effects. When limiting to a finite number of $m$ electron and $n$ hole levels in the dot, the model can be solved exactly within numerical accuracy. Crucial for this to work is the absence of dispersion of the phonons. A suitable orthogonalization procedure leaves only $m(m+1)/2+n(n+1)/2-2$ phonon modes to be coupled to the electronic system. We calculate the linear optical polarization following a delta pulse excitation, and by a subsequent Fourier transformation the resulting optical absorption. This strict result is compared with a frequently used approximation modeling the absorption as a convolution between spectral functions of electron and hole, which tends to overestimate the effect of the phonon coupling. Numerical results are given for two electron and three hole states in a quantum dot made from the polar material CdSe. Parameter values are chosen such that a quantum dot with a resonant sublevel distance can be compared with a nonresonant one., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures

Condensed Matter - Mesoscale and Nanoscale Physics - Abstract
The relaxation of electrons in quantum dots via phonon emission is hindered by the discrete nature of the dot levels (phonon bottleneck). In order to clarify the issue theoretically we consider a system of $N$ discrete fermionic states (dot levels) coupled to an unlimited number of bosonic modes with the same energy (dispersionless phonons). In analogy to the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization procedure, we perform a unitary transformation into new bosonic modes. Since only $N(N+1)/2$ of them couple to the fermions, a numerically exact treatment is possible. The formalism is applied to a GaAs quantum dot with only two electronic levels. If close to resonance with the phonon energy, the electronic transition shows a splitting due to quantum mechanical level repulsion. This is driven mainly by one bosonic mode, whereas the other two provide further polaronic renormalizations. The numerically exact results for the electron spectral function compare favourably with an analytic solution based on degenerate perturbation theory in the basis of shifted oscillator states. In contrast, the widely used selfconsistent first-order Born approximation proves insufficient in describing the rich spectral features., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Condensed Matter - Other Condensed Matter - Abstract
A new microscopic approach to the optical transitions in quantum dots and quantum dot molecules, which accounts for both diagonal and non-diagonal exciton-phonon interaction, is developed. The cumulant expansion of the linear polarization is generalized to a multilevel system and is applied to calculation of the full time dependence of the polarization and the absorption spectrum. In particular, the broadening of zero-phonon lines is evaluated directly. It is found that in some range of the dot distance real phonon-assisted transitions between exciton states dominate the dephasing, while virtual transitions are of minor importance. The influence of Coulomb interaction, tunneling, and structural asymmetry on the exciton dephasing in quantum dot molecules is analyzed., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Condensed Matter - Abstract
A microscopic theory of optical transitions in quantum dots with carrier-phonon interaction is developed. Virtual transitions into higher confined states with acoustic phonon assistance add a quadratic phonon coupling to the standard linear one, thus extending the independent Boson model. Summing infinitely many diagrams in the cumulant, a numerically exact solution for the interband polarization is found. Its full time dependence and the absorption lineshape of the quantum dot are calculated. It is the quadratic interaction which gives rise to a temperature-dependent broadening of the zero-phonon line, being here calculated for the first time in a consistent scheme., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Nonlinear Sciences - Adaptation and Self-Organizing Systems - Abstract
The explicit relationship among perception, communication, and design is being discussed in some detail, in order to relate it to characteristic details of the modeling of the world which defines the scientific and artistic activities of humans, in the first place, but also the philosophical grasping of the world and its foundations in order to position humankind within this worldly framework, at the same time. In particular, the structure and constitutional role of language are being analyzed with a view to the latter's universality. For the special case of synergetics (within the recent context of theories of self-organization and the formation of structure), this cognitive background is being inspected as to possible consequences for aspects of complexity and nonlinearity., Comment: 20 pages, INTAS/NIS research report

The combustion of petroleum-based fossil fuels is associated with a high environmental burden. Several alternative fuels, including synthetic fuels (e.g., gas-to-liquid, GTL) and biofuels (e.g., rapeseed methyl ester, RME) have been studied in the last few years. While the advantages for the environment (sustainability of biofuels) are well known, research on the resulting health effects from combustion aerosols of these alternative fuels is still scarce. Consequently, we investigated the chemical combustion profile from three distinct fuel types, including a petroleum-based fossil fuel (B0) and two alternative fuels (GTL, RME) under real exposure conditions. We sampled particulate matter (PM2.5, PM0.25) and the gas phase from heavy-duty machinery and evaluated the general pattern of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds, elemental and organic carbon as well as a range of transition metals in the size segregated PM and/or gas phase. The use of comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry enabled us to classify distinct methylated PAHs in the PM samples and its high abundance, especially in the fine fraction of PM. We found that (methylated) PAHs were highly abundant in the PM of B0 compared to GTL and RME. Highest concentrations of targeted aromatic species in the gas phase were released from B0. In summary, we demonstrated that GTL and RME combustion released lower amounts of chemical compounds related to adverse health effects, thus, the substitution of petroleum-based fuels could improve air quality for human and the environment.

However, it is not clear whether the deficit pattern is generalized or specific in nature. We hypothesized that encoding deficits at an early stage of the disease might be due to the more fundamental WM deficits. Methods: We examined episodic memory encoding and WM by administering the California Verbal Learning Test, a 2-back task, and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test in 90 first-episode psychosis (FE) patients and 116 individuals with an at-risk mental state for psychosis (ARMS) compared to 57 healthy subjects. Results: Learning progress, but not span of apprehension, was diminished to a similar extent in both the ARMS and the FE. We showed that this was due to WM impairment by applying a structural equation approach. Conclusion: Thus, we conclude that verbal memory encoding deficits are secondary to primary WM impairment in emerging psychosis. Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
The interband polarizations induced by two phase-locked pulses in a semiconductor show strong interference effects depending on the time tau_1 separating the pulses. The four-wave mixing signal diffracted from a third pulse delayed by tau is coherently controlled by tuning tau_1. The four-wave mixing response is evaluated exactly for a two-level system coupled to a single LO phonon. In the weak coupling regime it shows oscillations with the phonon frequency which turn into sharp peaks at multiples of the phonon period for a larger coupling strength. Destructive interferences between the two phase-locked pulses produce a splitting of the phonon peaks into a doublet. For fixed tau but varying tau_1 the signal shows rapid oscillations at the interband-transition frequency, whose amplitude exhibits bursts at multiples of the phonon period., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, RevTex, content changed
