- Abstract
The emergence of alternative stable states in forest systems has significant implications for the functioning and structure of the terrestrial biosphere, yet empirical evidence remains scarce. Here, we combine global forest biodiversity observations and simulations to test for alternative stable states in the presence of evergreen and deciduous forest types. We reveal a bimodal distribution of forest leaf types across temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere that cannot be explained by the environment alone, suggesting signatures of alternative forest states. Moreover, we empirically demonstrate the existence of positive feedbacks in tree growth, recruitment and mortality, with trees having 4–43% higher growth rates, 14–17% higher survival rates and 4–7 times higher recruitment rates when they are surrounded by trees of their own leaf type. Simulations show that the observed positive feedbacks are necessary and sufficient to generate alternative forest states, which also lead to dependency on history (hysteresis) during ecosystem transition from evergreen to deciduous forests and vice versa. We identify hotspots of bistable forest types in evergreen-deciduous ecotones, which are likely driven by soil-related positive feedbacks. These findings are integral to predicting the distribution of forest biomes, and aid to our understanding of biodiversity, carbon turnover, and terrestrial climate feedbacks.

A silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array has been developed at FBK-irst having 32 channels and a dimension of 8.0 x 1.1 mm^2. Each 250 um wide channel is subdivided into 5 x 22 rectangularly arranged pixels. These sensors are developed to read out a modular high resolution scintillating fiber tracker. Key properties like breakdown voltage, gain and photon detection efficiency (PDE) are found to be homogeneous over all 32 channels of an SiPM array. This could make scintillating fiber trackers with SiPM array readout a promising alternative to available tracker technologies, if noise properties and the PDE are improved.

Physics - Instrumentation and Detectors - Abstract
We present a prototype for the first tracking detector consisting of 250 micron thin scintillating fibers and silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays. The detector has a modular design, each module consists of a mechanical support structure of 10mm Rohacell foam between two 100 micron thin carbon fiber skins. Five layers of scintillating fibers are glued to both top and bottom of the support structure. SiPM arrays with a channel pitch of 250 micron are placed in front of the fibers. We show the results of the first module prototype using multiclad fibers of types Bicron BCF-20 and Kuraray SCSF-81M that were read out by novel 32-channel SiPM arrays from FBK-irst/INFN Perugia as well as 32-channel SiPM arrays produced by Hamamatsu. A spatial resolution of 88 micron +/- 6 micron at an average yield of 10 detected photons per minimal ionizig particle has been achieved., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, submitted as proceedings to the 11th Topical Seminar on Innovative Particle and Radiation Detectors (IPRD08)

- Abstract
We report the observation of new properties of primary iron (Fe) cosmic rays in the rigidity range 2.65 GV to 3.0 TV with 0.62 million iron nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. Above 80.5 GV the rigidity dependence of the cosmic ray Fe flux is identical to the rigidity dependence of the primary cosmic ray He, C, and O fluxes, with the Fe/O flux ratio being constant at 0.155±0.006. This shows that unexpectedly Fe and He, C, and O belong to the same class of primary cosmic rays which is different from the primary cosmic rays Ne, Mg, and Si class.

- Abstract
Aim: Interprofessional collaboration is particularly relevant to patient safety in outpatient care with polypharmacy. The educational project "PILLE" is meant to give medical and pharmacy students an understanding of the roles and competencies needed for cooperation in the provision of healthcare and to enable interprofessional learning.Method: The curriculum is aimed at pharmacy and medical students and was developed in six steps according to the Kern cycle. It is comprised of an interprofessional seminar, a joint practical training in a simulated pharmacy, and a tandem job shadowing at a primary care practice. The project was implemented in three stages due to the pandemic: The interprofessional online seminar based on the ICAP model and the digital inverted classroom was held in the 2020 winter semester; the interprofessional practical training was added in the 2021 summer semester; and the interprofessional tandem job shadowing at a primary care practice in the 2021 winter semester.Attitudes toward interprofessional learning, among other things, was measured in the evaluation using the SPICE-2D questionnaire (Student Perceptions of Physician-Pharmacist Interprofessional Clinical Education). Results: In the first three semesters, a total of 105 students (46 pharmacy, 59 medicine) participated in the project, of which 78 participated in the evaluation (74% response rate). The students stated, in particular, that they had learned about the competencies and roles of the other profession and desired additional and more specific preparatory materials for the course sessions. The SPICE-2D questionnaire showed high values for both groups of students already in the pre-survey and these increased further as a result of the project. Conclusion: Joint case-based learning could be implemented under the conditions imposed by the pandemic.

- Abstract
We report the observation of new properties of primary iron (Fe) cosmic rays in the rigidity range 2.65 GV to 3.0 TV with 0.62 × 10^6 iron nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. Above 80.5 GV the rigidity dependence of the cosmic ray Fe flux is identical to the rigidity dependence of the primary cosmic ray He, C, and O fluxes, with the Fe/O flux ratio being constant at 0.155 +/- 0.006. This shows that unexpectedly Fe and He, C, and O belong to the same class of primary cosmic rays which is different from the primary cosmic rays Ne, Mg, and Si class.

- Abstract
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a precision particle physics detector on the International Space Station (ISS) conducting a unique, long-duration mission of fundamental physics research in space. The physics objectives include the precise studies of the origin of dark matter, antimatter, and cosmic rays as well as the exploration of new phenomena. Following a 16-year period of construction and testing, and a precursor flight on the Space Shuttle, AMS was installed on the ISS on May 19, 2011. In this report we present results based on 120 billion charged cosmic ray events up to multi-TeV energies. This includes the fluxes of positrons, electrons, antiprotons, protons, and nuclei. These results provide unexpected information, which cannot be explained by the current theoretical models. The accuracy and characteristics of the data, simultaneously from many different types of cosmic rays, provide unique input to the understanding of origins, acceleration, and propagation of cosmic rays.

24. Endogenous transformation of exogenous effects in a system dynamics model of heating, ventilation and rebound

- Abstract
Energy efficiency measures do not fully translate into energy consumption reductions because occupants increase their dwellings’ internal temperatures rather than only reducing energy bills. This effect, known as the rebound effect, has been empirically confirmed and is usually attributed to occupants’ increase of thermal comfort. Based on system dynamics modelling, we offer a different and complementary explanation that shows how rebound may occur when occupants feel thermally comfortable throughout. The interaction of their desired behaviour with other practices, such as cooking, explains how shifts in their desired temperature may occur. We thus contribute to the understanding of domestic practices related to energy efficiency and rebound. In addition, our study shows how rebound occurs through the transformation of exogenous inputs through endogenous feedback mechanisms. While system dynamics emphasises continuous modelling and endogeneity, our study thus also motivates future research into the analysis of the endogenous transformation of time-varying inputs in system dynamics.

Heterozygous TREX1 mutations are associated with monogenic familial chilblain lupus and represent a risk factor for developing systemic lupus erythematosus. These interferonopathies originate from chronic type I interferon stimulation due to sensing of inadequately accumulating nucleic acids. We here analysed the composition of dendritic cell (DC) subsets, central stimulators of immune responses, in patients with TREX1 deficiency. We performed single-cell RNA-sequencing of peripheral blood DCs and monocytes from two patients with familial chilblain lupus and heterozygous mutations in TREX1 and from controls. Type I interferon pathway genes were strongly upregulated in patients. Cell frequencies of the myeloid and plasmacytoid DC and of monocyte populations in patients and controls were similar, but we describe a novel DC subpopulation highly enriched in patients: a myeloid DC CD1C+ subpopulation characterized by the expression of LMNA, EMP1 and a type I interferon- stimulated gene profile. The presence of this defined subpopulation was confirmed in a second cohort of patients and controls by flow cytometry, also revealing that an increased percentage of patient’s cells in the subcluster express costimulatory molecules. We identified a novel type I interferon responsive myeloid DC subpopulation, that might be important for the perpetuation of TREX1-induced chilblain lupus and other type I interferonopathies.

Low-coverage whole genome shotgun sequencing (or genome skimming) has emerged as a cost-effective method for acquiring genomic data in nonmodel organisms. This method provides sequence information on chloroplast genome (cpDNA), mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) and nuclear ribosomal regions (rDNA), which are over-represented within cells. However, numerous bioinformatic challenges remain to accurately and rapidly obtain such data in organisms with complex genomic structures and rearrangements, in particular for mtDNA in plants or for cpDNA in some plant families. Here we introduce the pipeline ORTHOSKIM, which performs in silico capture of targeted sequences from genomic and transcriptomic libraries without assembling whole organelle genomes. ORTHOSKIM proceeds in three steps: (i) global sequence assembly, (ii) mapping against reference sequences and (iii) target sequence extraction; importantly it also includes a range of quality control tests. Different modes are implemented to capture both coding and noncoding regions of cpDNA, mtDNA and rDNA sequences, along with predefined nuclear sequences (e.g., ultraconserved elements) or collections of single-copy orthologue genes. Moreover, aligned DNA matrices are produced for phylogenetic reconstructions, by performing multiple alignments of the captured sequences. While ORTHOSKIM is suitable for any eukaryote, a case study is presented here, using 114 genome-skimming libraries and four RNA sequencing libraries obtained for two plant families, Primulaceae and Ericaceae, the latter being a well-known problematic family for cpDNA assemblies. ORTHOSKIM recovered with high success rates cpDNA, mtDNA and rDNA sequences, well suited to accurately infer evolutionary relationships within these families. ORTHOSKIM is released under a GPL-3 licence and is available at: https://github.com/cpouchon/ORTHOSKIM.

- Abstract
We report the observation of new properties of primary cosmic rays, neon (Ne), magnesium (Mg), and silicon (Si), measured in the rigidity range 2.15 GV to 3.0 TV with 1.8 × 10^6 Ne, 2.2 × 10^6 Mg, and 1.6 × 10^6 Si nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station. The Ne and Mg spectra have identical rigidity dependence above 3.65 GV. The three spectra have identical rigidity dependence above 86.5 GV, deviate from a single power law above 200 GV, and harden in an identical way. Unexpectedly, above 86.5 GV the rigidity dependence of primary cosmic rays Ne, Mg, and Si spectra is different from the rigidity dependence of primary cosmic rays He, C, and O. This shows that the Ne, Mg, and Si and He, C, and O are two different classes of primary cosmic rays.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: People living with rarer dementias face considerable difficulty accessing tailored information, advice, and peer and professional support. Web-based meeting platforms offer a critical opportunity to connect with others through shared lived experiences, even if they are geographically dispersed, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVE: We aim to develop facilitated videoconferencing support groups (VSGs) tailored to people living with or caring for someone with familial or sporadic frontotemporal dementia or young-onset Alzheimer disease, primary progressive aphasia, posterior cortical atrophy, or Lewy body dementia. This paper describes the development, coproduction, field testing, and evaluation plan for these groups. METHODS: We describe a 3-phase approach to development. First, information and knowledge were gathered as part of a coproduction process with members of the Rare Dementia Support service. This information, together with literature searches and consultation with experts by experience, clinicians, and academics, shaped the design of the VSGs and session themes. Second, field testing involved 154 Rare Dementia Support members (people living with dementia and carers) participating in 2 rounds of facilitated sessions across 7 themes (health and social care professionals, advance care planning, independence and identity, grief and loss, empowering your identity, couples, and hope and dementia). Third, a detailed evaluation plan for future rounds of VSGs was developed. RESULTS: The development of the small groups program yielded content and structure for 9 themed VSGs (the 7 piloted themes plus a later stages program and creativity club for implementation in rounds 3 and beyond) to be delivered over 4 to 8 sessions. The evaluation plan incorporated a range of quantitative (attendance, demographics, and geography; pre-post well-being ratings and surveys; psycholinguistic analysis of conversation; facial emotion recognition; facilitato

- Abstract
Precision measurements by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) on the International Space Station of He-3 and He-4 fluxes are presented. The measurements are based on 100 million He-4 nuclei in the rigidity range from 2.1 to 21 GV and 18 million He-3 from 1.9 to 15 GV collected from May 2011 to November 2017. We observed that the He-3 and He-4 fluxes exhibit nearly identical variations with time. The relative magnitude of the variations decreases with increasing rigidity. The rigidity dependence of the He-3/He-4 flux ratio is measured for the first time. Below 4 GV, the He-3/He-4 flux ratio was found to have a significant long-term time dependence. Above 4 GV, the He-3/He-4 flux ratio was found to be time independent, and its rigidity dependence is well described by a single power law proportional to R-Delta with Delta = 0.294 0.004. Unexpectedly, this value is in agreement with the B/O and B/C spectral indices at high energies.

We report the observation of new properties of primary iron (Fe) cosmic rays in the rigidity range 2.65 GV to 3.0 TV with 0.62×10⁶ iron nuclei collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment on the International Space Station.

Background Peanut allergy has a rising prevalence in high-income countries, affecting 0.5%-1.4% of children. This study aimed to better understand peanut anaphylaxis in comparison to anaphylaxis to other food triggers in European children and adolescents. Methods Data was sourced from the European Anaphylaxis Registry via an online questionnaire, after in-depth review of food-induced anaphylaxis cases in a tertiary paediatric allergy centre. Results 3514 cases of food anaphylaxis were reported between July 2007 - March 2018, 56% in patients younger than 18 years. Peanut anaphylaxis was recorded in 459 children and adolescents (85% of all peanut anaphylaxis cases). Previous reactions (42% vs. 38%; p = .001), asthma comorbidity (47% vs. 35%; p < .001), relevant cofactors (29% vs. 22%; p = .004) and biphasic reactions (10% vs. 4%; p = .001) were more commonly reported in peanut anaphylaxis. Most cases were labelled as severe anaphylaxis (Ring&Messmer grade III 65% vs. 56% and grade IV 1.1% vs. 0.9%; p = .001). Self-administration of intramuscular adrenaline was low (17% vs. 15%), professional adrenaline administration was higher in non-peanut food anaphylaxis (34% vs. 26%; p = .003). Hospitalization was higher for peanut anaphylaxis (67% vs. 54%; p = .004). Conclusions The European Anaphylaxis Registry data confirmed peanut as one of the major causes of severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reactions in European children, with some characteristic features e.g., presence of asthma comorbidity and increased rate of biphasic reactions. Usage of intramuscular adrenaline as first-line treatment is low and needs to be improved. The Registry, designed as the largest database on anaphylaxis, allows continuous assessment of this condition.
