Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new representation of the cortical surface that may be used to study the cortex folding process and to recover some putative stable anatomical landmarks called sulcal roots usually buried in the depth of adult brains. This representation is a primal sketch derived from a scale space computed for the mean curvature of the cortical surface. This scale-space stems from a diffusion equation geodesic to the cortical surface. The primal sketch is made up of objects defined from mean curvature minima and saddle points. The resulting sketch aims first at highlighting significant elementary cortical folds, second at representing the fold merging process during brain growth. The relevance of the framework is illustrated by the study of central sulcus sulcal roots from antenatal to adult age. Some results are proposed for ten different brains. Some preliminary results are also provided for superior temporal sulcus. Index Terms--Morphometry, spatial normalization, sulcogenesis, variability.

Abstract

Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterised by qualitative alterations in reciprocal social interactions. Some recent studies show alterations in gaze patterns during social perception and rest-functional abnormalities in the ‘social brain network’. This study investigated: i) social perception gaze patterns in children with ASD and controls, ii) the relationship between autism clinical severity and social perception gaze patterns, iii) the relationship between resting cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and social perception gaze patterns. Methods: Nine children with ASD and 9 children with typical development were studied. Eye-tracking was used to detect gaze patterns during presentation of stimuli depicting social scenes. Autism clinical severity was established using the Autism Diagnostic Interview Revised (ADI-R). Arterial spin labelling MRI was used to quantify rCBF. Results: The ASD group looked less at social regions and more at non-social regions than controls. No significant correlation was found between ASD clinical severity and social perception gaze patterns. In the ASD group, gaze behaviour was related to rCBF in the temporal lobe regions at trend level. Positive correlations were found between temporal rCBF and gaze to the face region, while negative correlations were found between temporal rCBF and gaze to non-social regions. Conclusions: These preliminary results suggest that social perception gaze patterns are altered in children with ASD, and could be related to temporal rCBF.

Abstract

International audience; In this paper, we propose to use the full diffusion tensor to perform brain-wide score prediction on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) using the log-Euclidean framework., rather than the commonly used fractional anisotropy (FA). Indeed, scalar values such as the FA do not capture all the information contained in the diffusion tensor. Additionally, full tensor information is included in every step of the pre-processing pipeline: registration, smoothing and feature selection using voxelwise multivariate regression analysis. This approach was tested on data obtained from 30 children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder and showed some improvement over the FA-only analysis.

21. [Auditory perception and language: functional imaging of speech sensitive auditory cortex]

Abstract

Since the description of cortical deafness, it has been known that the superior temporal cortex is bilaterally involved in the initial stages of language auditory perception but the precise anatomical limits and the function of this area remain debated. Here we reviewed more than 40 recent papers of positron emission tomography and functional magnetic resonance imaging related to language auditory perception, and we performed a meta-analysis of the localization of the peaks of activation in the Talairach's space. We found 8 studies reporting word versus non-word listening contrasts with 54 activation peaks in the temporal lobes. These peaks clustered in a bilateral and well-limited area of the temporal superior cortex, which is here operationally defined as the speech sensitive auditory cortex. This area is more than 4cm long, located in the superior temporal gyrus and the superior temporal sulcus, both anterior and posterior to Heschl's gyrus. It do not include the primary auditory cortex nor the ascending part of the planum temporale. The speech sensitive auditory cortex is not activated by pure tones, environmental sounds, or attention directed toward elementary components of a sound such as intensity, pitch, or duration, and thus has some specificity for speech signals. The specificity is not perfect, since we found a number of non-speech auditory stimuli activating the speech sensitive auditory cortex. Yet the latter studies always involve auditory perception mechanisms which are also relevant to speech perception either at the level of primitive auditory scene analysis processes, or at the level of specific schema-based recognition processes. The dorsal part of the speech sensitive auditory cortex may be involved in primitive scene analysis processes, whereas distributed activation of this area may contribute to the emergence of a broad class of "voice" schemas and of more specific "speech schemas/phonetic modules" related to different languages. In addition, this area is activated by language-related lip movement, suggesting that a multimodal integration of the auditory and the visual information relevant in speech perception occurs at this level. Finally, there is a task-related top-down modulation of the pattern of activation of the speech sensitive auditory cortex which may reflect the fact that the different parts of this structure are connected to different down-stream cortical regions involved in the neural processing of different types of tasks.

Abstract

This paper is part of a special section on 'psychopharmacotherapy in children' and focuses on benzodiazepine receptors in autism. Infantile autism in an early and pervasive developmental disorder described by Kanner in 1943. Anatomical, pathological and magnetic resonance imaging studies have indicated changes in the cerebellum and hippocampus of autistic subjects. Given the numerical importance and diffuse benzodiazepine receptors, their study by functional brain imaging methods in vivo could be value in cases of infantile autism as a gauge of neuronal potentiality. The main data concerning benzodiazepine complex are presented. The relations between these data and the neurophysiological hypotheses of autism are discussed.

Abstract

Objectives: We had investigated differences in cerebral blood flow (CBF) at rest prior to implantation in children with congenital deafness compared to normally hearing children. Material and methods: Retrospective study included 79 children, candidates for cochlear implantation between 2012 and 2018. All patients underwent a brain and inner ear MRI, a routine MRI protocol including ASL-MRI. The median age at time of MRI scan was 3.2 years (range 0.5 to 15.8 years). A control group was composed of 86 normally hearing children with a median age at time of MRI scan of 2.9 years (range 0.5 to 13.0 years). Participants were divided into 3 subgroups based on their age at time of MRI. A subgroup under 2 years of age was composed of 28 patients and 33 controls. A subgroup aged between 2 and 5 years of age was composed of 26 deaf patients and 20 controls. A subgroup older than 5 years of age was composed of 25 deaf patients and 33 controls. For children over 5 years old, prior to cochlear implantation (CI) and following hearing aid rehabilitation the mean intelligibility score was of 64.5±32%, and was 92±11.5% twelve months after CI. There was no correlation between age and intelligibility scores either before or after cochlear implantation. Results: In deaf children older than 5 years old, results showed a significant bilateral hypoperfusion in temporal regions, and a significant hyperperfusion of occipital regions. Furthermore, whole brain voxel-by-voxel correlation analysis between preoperative rest-CBF and oral intelligibility scores at 12 months post-implantation, showed significant negative correlation localized in the occipital regions. Finally, when comparing mean relative perfusion across ages in patients and controls, we observed that temporal perfusion increased with age in normally hearing children, although it remained stable in deaf children. Conlusions: Children who performed worse in the speech perception test one year after implantation were those presenting higher preoperative CBF values in these occipital regions. We showed a critical period around 4 years old, where in the context of auditory deprivation, there is a lack of synaptic activity in auditory regions. These results support the benefits of early cochlear implantation to maximize the effectiveness of auditory rehabilitation and to avoid cross-modal reorganization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

50. Regional cerebral blood flow by SPECT imaging in Sturge-Weber disease: an aid for diagnosis.

Abstract

Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) was studied using SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) with 133-Xenon in 13 patients with confirmed Sturge-Weber disease, aged 9 months to 18 years. CT scan, performed at the same time, showed evident cerebral angioma in 10 but not in three. A marked hypoperfused area was found in all patients, ranging from -32% to -72% and of the same location as the CT signs. The hypoperfusion seems to result from post ictal phenomenon as well as from chronic ischaemia. SPECT imaging is therefore a sensitive method for visualising intracranial angioma in Sturge-Weber disease and it provides an aid for diagnosis when a CT scan is not reliable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
