Search

Identifying stars belonging to different classes is vital in order to build up statistical samples of different phases and pathways of stellar evolution. In the era of surveys covering billions of stars, an automated method of identifying these classes becomes necessary. Many classes of stars are identified based on their emitted spectra. In this paper, we use a combination of the multi-class multi-label Machine Learning (ML) method XGBoost and the PySSED spectral-energy-distribution fitting algorithm to classify stars into nine different classes, based on their photometric data. The classifier is trained on subsets of the SIMBAD database. Particular challenges are the very high sparsity (large fraction of missing values) of the underlying data as well as the high class imbalance. We discuss the different variables available, such as photometric measurements on the one hand, and indirect predictors such as Galactic position on the other hand. We show the difference in performance when excluding certain variables, and discuss in which contexts which of the variables should be used. Finally, we show that increasing the number of samples of a particular type of star significantly increases the performance of the model for that particular type, while having little to no impact on other types. The accuracy of the main classifier is ~0.7 with a macro F1 score of 0.61. While the current accuracy of the classifier is not high enough to be reliably used in stellar classification, this work is an initial proof of feasibility for using ML to classify stars based on photometry.

We have developed a new method of multi-wavelength data combination for the search of late-type radio dwarfs, and have put it into practice using GLEAM-X DR1 data. The initial sample is selected by cross-matching the Gaia/DR3 objects with the probability of being a star no less than 99$\%$, and removing the extragalactic objects assigned by the SIMBAD database. The late-type dwarf stars are judged according to their location in the $(BP-RP)_0/M_{\rm G}$ color-magnitude diagram and in the $(J-H)_0/(K-W1)_0$ near-infrared color-color diagram. Furthermore, stellar activity is searched by ultraviolet excess in the GALEX/NUV band and the Rossby number in the TESS light curves. In total, 12 stars are found to be late-type dwarf stars associated with radio source, which is consisted of five stars with the UV excess and seven stars with the Rossby number less than 0.13. Three of these 12 stars are previously studied to be associated with radio objects. The hydrogen recombination lines H30$\alpha$, H40$\alpha$, H42$\alpha$, H50$\beta$ and H57$\gamma$ and the underlying bremsstrahlung continuum emission were detected with ALMA in the bipolar nebula Mz3. The source was not spatially resolved, but the velocity profile of the H30$\alpha$ line shows clear indication of maser amplification, confirming previous reports of laser amplification in the far infrared H recombination lines observed with Herschel Space Observatory. Comparison between the flux densities of the H50$\beta$, H40$\alpha$ and H42$\alpha$ lines show overcooling, or darkness amplification by stimulated absorption (dasar effect) at the LSR velocity of about $-25$ km s$^{-1}$, which constrains the density of the absorbing region to about 10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$. The H30$\alpha$ line, on the other hand, presents maser lines at LSR velocities of $-69$ and $-98$ km s$^{-1}$, which indicates ionized gas with densities close to 10$^7$ cm$^{-3}$. Although the source of emission was not resolved, it was possible to find the central position of the images for each velocity interval, which resulted in a well defined position-velocity distribution., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Optical spectra of the Very Late Thermal Pulse (VLTP) object V4334 Sgr have shown a rapidly changing spectrum resulting from shocks in the outflow, which created a new bipolar nebula inside the old nebula. We see C II and C III emission lines emerging typical of a [WC 11-10]-type star. As mass-losing asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars evolve to planetary nebulae (PNe), the mass outflow geometries transform from nearly spherical to extreme aspherical. The physical mechanisms governing this transformation are widely believed to be linked to binarity and the associated production of disks and fast jets during transitional (post-AGB) evolutionary stages. We are carrying out a systematic ALMA survey ($P$re-planet$A$ry $N$ebulae high-angular-res$O$lution su$R$vey with $A$L$MA$ or PANORAMA) of a representative sample of bipolar and multipolar post-AGB objects. We have obtained high angular-resolution (0".1-0".4) observations of the CO(3--2) and/or 6--5 emission in order to probe the spatio-kinematic structure of the collimated outflows and the central disk/torii. The results are remarkable, generally showing the presence of bipolar or multipolar high-velocity outflows, dense toroidal waists, and in one case, a geometrically-thin circular ring around the central bipolar nebula. A high degree of point-symmetry characterizes the morphology of the mass ejecta. In this contribution, we present these and other highlights from our survey. We aim to use 2D/3D radiative transfer modeling in order to derive accurate outflow momenta, masses and mass-loss rates for our sample, and build hydrodynamical models that can explain the observed spatio-kinematic structures. These results will then be used to distinguish between different classes of PN-shaping binary interaction models.

Optical sensors offer precision, remote read-out, and immunity to electromagnetic interference but face adoption challenges due to complex and costly readout instrumentation, mostly based on high-resolution. This article challenges the notion that high spectral resolution is necessary for high performance optical sensing. We propose co-optimizing the linewidths of sensor and readout to achieve picometer-level precision using low-resolution multispectral detector arrays and incoherent light sources. This approach is validated in temperature sensing, fiber-tip refractive index sensing, and biosensing, achieving superior precision to high-resolution spectrometers. This paradigm change in readout will enable optical sensing systems with costs and dimensions comparable to electronic sensors.

We present the first detection of the ground-state OH emission line at 1612 MHz toward the prototypical carbon-rich planetary nebula (PN) NGC 7027, utilizing the newly installed ultra-wideband (UWB) receiver of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). This emission is likely to originate from the interface of the neutral shell and the ionized region. The other three ground-state OH lines at 1665, 1667, and 1721 MHz are observed in absorption and have velocities well matched with that of HCO$^+$ absorption. We infer that the OH absorption is from the outer shell of NGC 7027, although the possibility that they are associated with a foreground cloud cannot be completely ruled out. All the OH lines exhibit a single blue-shifted component with respect to the central star. The formation of OH in carbon-rich environments might be via photodissociation-induced chemical processes. Our observations offer significant constraints for chemical simulations, and they underscore the potent capability of the UWB receiver of FAST to search for nascent PNe., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The very late thermal pulse (VLTP) affects the evolution of $\sim$20\% of 1--8\,$\mathrm M_\odot$ stars, repeating the last phases of the red giant within a few years and leading to the formation of a new, but hydrogen-poor nebula within the old planetary nebula (PN). The strong dust formation in the latter obscures the optical and near-infrared radiation of the star. We aimed to determine the reheating timescale of the central star in Sakurai's object, which is an important constraint for the poorly understood VLTP evolution. We observed the radio continuum emission of Sakurai's object for almost 20 years from 2004 to 2023. Continuous, multi-frequency observations proved to be essential to distinguish between phases dominated by photoionization and shock ionization. The flux density fluctuates by more than a factor 40 within months to years. The spectral index remained negative between 2006 and 2017 and is close to zero since 2019. The emission region is barely resolved since 2021. Non-thermal radio emission observed from 2004 to 2017 traces shocks induced by wind interactions due to discrete mass-loss events. Binary interactions have been proposed to explain a variety of circumstellar structures seen around evolved stars, including asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars and planetary nebulae. Studies resolving the circumstellar envelopes of AGB stars have revealed spirals, discs and bipolar outflows, with shaping attributed to interactions with a companion. For the first time, we have used a combined chemical and dynamical analysis to reveal a highly eccentric and long-period orbit for W Aquilae, a binary system containing an AGB star and a main sequence companion. Our results are based on anisotropic SiN emission, the first detections of NS and SiC towards an S-type star, and density structures observed in the CO emission. These features are all interpreted as having formed during periastron interactions. Aims. Numerous planetary nebulae show complicated inner structures not obviously explained. For one such object we undertake a detailed 3D photoionization and kinematical model analysis for a better understanding of the underlying shaping processes. Methods. We obtained 2D ARGUS/IFU spectroscopy covering the whole nebula in selected, representative emission lines. A 3D photoionization modelling was used to compute images and line profiles. Comparison of the observations with the models was used to fine-tune the model details. This predicts the approximate nebular 3D structure and kinematics. Results. We found that within a cylindrical outer nebula there is a hidden, very dense, bar-like or cylindrical inner structure. Both features are co-axial and are inclined to the sky by 40 deg. A wide asymmetric one-sided plume attached to one end of the bar is proposed to be a flat structure. All nebular components share the same kinematics, with an isotropic velocity field which monotonically increases with distance from the star before reaching a plateau. The relatively low velocities indicate that the observed shapes do not require particularly energetic processes and there is no indication for the current presence of a jet. The ESO public survey VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV) surveyed the inner Galactic bulge and the adjacent southern Galactic disk from $2009-2015$. Upon its conclusion, the complementary VVV eXtended (VVVX) survey has expanded both the temporal as well as spatial coverage of the original VVV area, widening it from $562$ to $1700$ sq. deg., as well as providing additional epochs in $JHK_{\rm s}$ filters from $2016-2023$. With the completion of VVVX observations during the first semester of 2023, we present here the observing strategy, a description of data quality and access, and the legacy of VVVX. VVVX took $\sim 2000$ hours, covering about 4% of the sky in the bulge and southern disk. VVVX covered most of the gaps left between the VVV and the VISTA Hemisphere Survey (VHS) areas and extended the VVV time baseline in the obscured regions affected by high extinction and hence hidden from optical observations. VVVX provides a deep $JHK_{\rm s}$ catalogue of $\gtrsim 1.5\times10^9$ point sources, as well as a $K_{\rm s}$ band catalogue of $\sim 10^7$ variable sources. Within the existing VVV area, we produced a $5D$ map of the surveyed region by combining positions, distances, and proper motions of well-understood distance indicators such as red clump stars, RR Lyrae, and Cepheid variables. In March 2023 we successfully finished the VVVX survey observations that started in 2016, an accomplishment for ESO Paranal Observatory upon 4200 hours of observations for VVV+VVVX. The VVV+VVVX catalogues complement those from the Gaia mission at low Galactic latitudes and provide spectroscopic targets for the forthcoming ESO high-multiplex spectrographs MOONS and 4MOST., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures (+ appendix). We present the discovery of a low-mass gas-rich low-surface brightness galaxy in the Dorado Group, at a distance of 17.7 Mpc. Combining deep MeerKAT 21-cm observations from the MeerKAT HI Observations of Nearby Galactic Objects: Observing Southern Emitters (MHONGOOSE) survey with deep photometric images from the VST Early-type Galaxy Survey (VEGAS) we find a stellar and neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas mass of $M_\star = 2.23\times10^6$ M$_\odot$ and $M_{\rm HI}=1.68\times10^6$ M$_\odot$, respectively. This low-surface brightness galaxy is the lowest mass HI detection found in a group beyond the Local Universe ($D\gtrsim 10$ Mpc). The dwarf galaxy has the typical overall properties of gas-rich low surface brightness galaxies in the Local group, but with some striking differences. Namely, the MHONGOOSE observations reveal a very low column density ($\sim 10^{18-19}$ cm$^{-2}$) HI disk with asymmetrical morphology possibly supported by rotation and higher velocity dispersion in the centre. There, deep optical photometry and UV-observations suggest a recent enhancement of the star formation. Found at galactocentric distances where in the Local Group dwarf galaxies are depleted of cold gas (at $390$ projected-kpc distance from the group centre), this galaxy is likely on its first orbit within the Dorado group. We discuss the possible environmental effects that may have caused the formation of the HI disk and the enhancement of star formation, highlighting the short-lived phase (a few hundreds of Myr) of the gaseous disk, before either SF or hydrodynamical forces will deplete the gas of the galaxy., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables; accepted for publication in A&A

Exploration of extreme or remote environments such as Mars is often recognized as an opportunity for multi-robot systems. However, this poses challenges for maintaining robust inter-robot communication without preexisting infrastructure. It may be that robots can only share information when they are physically in close proximity with each other. At the same time, atmospheric phenomena such as dust devils are poorly understood and characterization of their electrostatic properties is of scientific interest. We perform a comparative analysis of two multi-robot communication strategies: a distributed approach, with pairwise intermittent rendezvous, and a centralized, fixed base station approach. We also introduce and evaluate the effectiveness of an algorithm designed to predict the location and strength of electrostatic anomalies, assuming robot proximity. Using an agent-based simulation, we assess the performance of these strategies in a 2D grid cell representation of a Martian environment. Results indicate that a decentralized rendezvous system consistently outperforms a fixed base station system in terms of exploration speed and in reducing the risk of data loss. We also find that inter-robot data sharing improves performance when trying to predict the location and strength of an electrostatic anomaly. These findings indicate the importance of appropriate communication strategies for efficient multi-robot science missions.

The MHONGOOSE (MeerKAT HI Observations of Nearby Galactic Objects: Observing Southern Emitters) survey maps the distribution and kinematics of the neutral atomic hydrogen (HI) gas in and around 30 nearby star-forming spiral and dwarf galaxies to extremely low HI column densities. The HI column density sensitivity (3 sigma over 16 km/s) ranges from ~ 5 x 10^{17} cm^{-2} at 90'' resolution to ~4 x 10^{19} cm^{-2} at the highest resolution of 7''. The HI mass sensitivity (3 sigma over 50 km/s) is ~5.5 X 10^5 M_sun at a distance of 10 Mpc (the median distance of the sample galaxies). The velocity resolution of the data is 1.4 km/s. One of the main science goals of the survey is the detection of cold, accreting gas in the outskirts of the sample galaxies. The sample was selected to cover a range in HI masses, from 10^7 M_sun to almost 10^{11} M_sun, to optimally sample possible accretion scenarios and environments. The distance to the sample galaxies ranges from 3 to 23 Mpc. In this paper, we present the sample selection, survey design, and observation and reduction procedures. We compare the integrated HI fluxes based on the MeerKAT data with those derived from single-dish measurement and find good agreement, indicating that our MeerKAT observations are recovering all flux. We present HI moment maps of the entire sample based on the first ten percent of the survey data, and find that a comparison of the zeroth- and second-moment values shows a clear separation between the physical properties of the HI in areas with star formation and areas without, related to the formation of a cold neutral medium. Finally, we give an overview of the HI-detected companion and satellite galaxies in the 30 fields, five of which have not previously been catalogued. We present point-source photometry from the Spitzer Space Telescope's final survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We mapped 30 square degrees in two epochs in 2017, with the second extending to early 2018 at 3.6 and 4.5 microns using the Infrared Array Camera. This survey duplicates the footprint from the SAGE-SMC program in 2008. Together, these surveys cover a nearly 10 yr temporal baseline in the SMC. We performed aperture photometry on the mosaicked maps produced from the new data. We did not use any prior catalogs as inputs for the extractor in order to be sensitive to any moving objects (e.g., foreground brown dwarfs) and other transient phenomena (e.g., cataclysmic variables or FU Ori-type eruptions). We produced a point-source catalog with high-confidence sources for each epoch as well as combined-epoch catalog. For each epoch and the combined-epoch data, we also produced a more complete archive with lower-confidence sources. Stellar atmosphere modelling predicts the luminosity and temperature of a star, together with parameters such as the effective gravity and the metallicity, by reproducing the observed spectral energy distribution. Most observational data comes from photometric surveys, using a variety of passbands. We herein present the Python Stellar Spectral Energy Distribution (PySSED) routine, designed to combine photometry from disparate catalogues, fit the luminosity and temperature of stars, and determine departures from stellar atmosphere models such as infrared or ultraviolet excess. We detail the routine's operation, and present use cases on both individual stars, stellar populations, and wider regions of the sky. We have undertaken a deep investigation of a well defined sample of 136 PNe located in a 10x10 degree central region of the Galactic Bulge observed with the ESO VLT and supplemented by archival HST imagery. These studies have provided precise morphologies, major axes position angles and the most robust sample of consistently derived chemical abundances available to date. Using these data we have statistically confirmed, at 5-sigma, the precise PNe population that provides the PNe alignment of major axes previously suggested in the Galactic Bulge, revealed a partial solution to the sulfur anomaly and uncovered interesting morphological, abundance and kinematic features. We present new radio continuum images and a source catalogue from the MeerKAT survey in the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The observations, at a central frequency of 1.3 GHz across a bandwidth of 0.8 GHz, encompass a field of view ~7 x 7 degrees and result in images with resolution of 8 arcsec. The median broad-band Stokes I image Root Mean Squared noise value is ~11 microJy/beam. The catalogue produced from these images contains 108,330 point sources and 517 compact extended sources. We also describe a UHF (544-1088 MHz) single pointing observation. We report the detection of a new confirmed Supernova Remnant (SNR) (MCSNR J0100-7211) with an X-ray magnetar at its centre and 10 new SNR candidates. This is in addition to the detection of 21 previously confirmed SNRs and two previously noted SNR candidates. Our new SNR candidates have typical surface brightness an order of magnitude below those previously known, and on the whole they are larger. The high sensitivity of the MeerKAT survey also enabled us to detect the bright end of the SMC Planetary Nebulae (PNe) sample - point-like radio emission is associated with 38 of 102 optically known PNe, of which 19 are new detections. Lastly, we present the detection of three foreground radio stars amidst 11 circularly polarised sources, and a few examples of morphologically interesting background radio galaxies from which the radio ring galaxy ESO 029-G034 may represent a new type of radio object., Comment: 31 pages, 27 figures

The dusty winds of cool evolved stars are a major contributor of the newly synthesised material enriching the Galaxy and future generations of stars. However, the details of the physics and chemistry behind dust formation and wind launching have yet to be pinpointed. Recent spatially resolved observations show the importance of gaining a more comprehensive view of the circumstellar chemistry, but a comparative study of the intricate interplay between chemistry and physics is still difficult because observational details such as frequencies and angular resolutions are rarely comparable. Aiming to overcome these deficiencies, ATOMIUM is an ALMA Large Programme to study the physics and chemistry of the circumstellar envelopes of a diverse set of oxygen-rich evolved stars under homogeneous observing conditions at three angular resolutions between ~0.02"-1.4". Here we summarize the molecular inventory of these sources, and the correlations between stellar parameters and molecular content. Seventeen oxygen-rich or S-type asymptotic giant branch (AGB) and red supergiant (RSG) stars have been observed in several tunings with ALMA Band 6, targeting a range of molecules to probe the circumstellar envelope and especially the chemistry of dust formation close to the star. We systematically assigned the molecular carriers of the spectral lines and measured their spectroscopic parameters and the angular extent of the emission of each line from integrated intensity maps. Across the ATOMIUM sample, we detect 291 transitions of 24 different molecules and their isotopologues. This includes several first detections in oxygen-rich AGB/RSG stars: PO v=1, SO2 v1=1 and v2=2, and several high energy H2O transitions. On August 25th 2013 Dana Patchick from the "Deep Sky Hunters" (DSH) amateur astronomer group discovered a diffuse nebulosity in the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mid-IR image archive that had no optical counterpart but appeared similar to many Planetary Nebulae (PNe) in WISE. As his 30th discovery he named it Pa 30 and it was added to the HASH PN database as a new PN candidate. Little did he know how important his discovery would become. 10 years later this object is the only known bound remnant of a violent double WD merger accompanied by a rare Type Iax SN, observed and recorded by the ancient Chinese and Japanese in 1181 AD. This makes Pa 30 and its central star IRAS 00500+6713 (WD J005311) the only SN Iax remnant in our Galaxy, the only known bound remnant of any SN, and based on the central star's spectrum the only Wolf-Rayet star known that neither has a massive progenitor nor is the central star of a Planetary Nebula. In this, the third of a series of papers, we present well determined chemical abundances for 124 Planetary nebulae (PNe) in the Galactic bulge from deep, long-slit FORS2 spectra from the 8.2 m ESO Very Large telescope (VLT). Prior to this work there were only ~240 bulge PNe with chemical abundances previously determined over a ~50 year period and of highly variable quality. For 34 of these PNe we are presenting their abundances for the first time which adds ~14% to the available sample of bulge PNe abundances. The interstellar reddening, physical conditions (electron densities, $n_{\mathrm{e}}$, temperatures, $T_{\mathrm{e}}$), and chemical compositions are derived as single values for each PN but also using different line diagnostics. Selected comparisons with the best literature fluxes for 75 PNe in common reveals that these significant new data are robust, reliable and internally self-consistent forming the largest independent, high quality and well understood derivation of PNe abundances currently available for study., Comment: Resubmitted to MNRAS after moderate revision

We present JWST images of the well-known planetary nebula NGC 6720 (the Ring Nebula), covering wavelengths from 1.6$\mu$m to 25 $\mu$m. The bright shell is strongly fragmented with some 20 000 dense globules, bright in H$_2$, with a characteristic diameter of 0.2 arcsec and density $n_{\rm H} \sim 10^5$-$10^6$ cm$^{-3}$. The shell contains a thin ring of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission. H$_2$ is found throughout the shell and in the halo. H$_2$ in the halo may be located on the swept-up walls of a biconal polar flow. The central cavity is shown to be filled with high ionization gas and shows two linear structures. The central star is located 2 arcsec from the emission centroid of the cavity and shell. Linear features (`spikes') extend outward from the ring, pointing away from the central star. Hydrodynamical simulations are shown which reproduce the clumping and possibly the spikes. Around ten low-contrast, regularly spaced concentric arc-like features are present; they suggest orbital modulation by a low-mass companion with a period of about 280 yr. A previously known much wider companion is located at a projected separation of about 15 000 au; we show that it is an M2-M4 dwarf. The system is therefore a triple star. These features, including the multiplicity, are similar to those seen in the Southern Ring Nebula (NGC 3132) and may be a common aspect of such nebulae., Comment: 25 pages, 23 figures. We present high angular-resolution observations of Sakurai's object using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array, shedding new light on its morpho-kinematical structure. The millimetre continuum emission, observed at an angular resolution of 20 milliarcsec (corresponding to 70 AU), reveals a bright compact central component whose spectral index indicates that it composed of amorphous carbon dust. Based on these findings, we conclude that this emission traces the previously suggested dust disc observed in mid-infrared observations. Therefore, our observations provide the first direct imaging of such a disc. The H$^{12}$CN($J$=4$\rightarrow$3) line emission, observed at an angular resolution of 300 milliarcsec (corresponding to 1000 AU), displays bipolar structure with a north-south velocity gradient. From the position-velocity diagram of this emission we identify the presence of an expanding disc and a bipolar molecular outflow. The inclination of the disc is determined to be $i$=72$^\circ$. The derived values for the de-projected expansion velocity and the radius of the disc are $v_{\rm exp}$=53 km s$^{-1}$ and $R$=277 AU, respectively. On the other hand, the de-projected expansion velocity of the bipolar outflow detected in the H$^{12}$CN($J$=4$\rightarrow$3) emission of approximately 1000 km s$^{-1}$. We propose that the molecular outflow has an hourglass morphology with an opening angle of around 60$^{\circ}$. Our observations unambiguously show that an equatorial disc and bipolar outflows formed in Sakurai's object in less than 30 years after the born-again event occurred, providing important constraints for future modelling efforts of this phenomenon., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. We report observations of a remarkable major axes alignment nearly parallel to the Galactic plane of 5{\sigma} significance for a subset of bulge "planetary nebulae" (PNe) that host, or are inferred to host, short period binaries. Nearly all are bipolar. It is solely this specific PNe population that accounts for the much weaker statistical alignments previously reported for the more general bulge PNe. It is clear evidence of a persistent, organised process acting on a measurable parameter at the heart of our Galaxy over perhaps cosmologically significant periods of time for this very particular PNe sample. Stable magnetic fields are currently the only plausible mechanism that could affect multiple binary star orbits as revealed by the observed major axes orientations of their eventual PNe. Transient surveys are a vital tool in exploring the dynamic universe, with radio transients acting as beacons for explosive and highly energetic astrophysical phenomena. However, performing commensal transient surveys using radio imaging can require a significant amount of computing power, data storage and time. With the instrumentation available to us, and with new and exciting radio interferometers in development, it is essential that we develop efficient methods to probe the radio transient sky. In this paper, we present results from an commensal short duration transient survey, on time scales of 8 seconds, 128 seconds and 1 hour, using data from the MeerKAT radio telescope. The dataset used was obtained as part of a galaxy observing campaign, and we focus on the field of NGC 5068. We present a quick, wide field imaging strategy to enable fast imaging of large datasets, and develop methods to efficiently filter detected transient candidates. No transient candidates were identified on the time scales of 8 seconds, 128 seconds and 1 hour, leading to competitive limits on the transient surface densities of $6.7{\times}10^{-5}$ deg$^{-1}$, $1.1{\times}10^{-3}$ deg$^{-1}$, and $3.2{\times}10^{-2}$ deg$^{-1}$ at sensitivities of 56.4 mJy, 19.2 mJy, and 3.9 mJy for the respective time scales. We find one possible candidate that could be associated with a stellar flare, that was rejected due to strict image quality control. An intense femtosecond-laser excitation of a solid induces highly nonthermal conditions. In materials like silicon, laser-induced bond-softening leads to a highly incoherent ionic motion and eventually nonthermal melting. But is this outcome an inevitable consequence, or can it be controlled? Here, we performed ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of crystalline silicon after multiple femtosecond-laser pulse excitations with total energy above the nonthermal melting threshold. Our results demonstrate an excitation mechanism, which can be generalized to other materials, that pauses nonthermal melting and creates a metastable state instead, which has an electronic structure similar to the ground state. Our findings open the way for a search for metastable structural and/or electronic transitions in the high-excitation regime. In addition, our approach could be used to switch off nonthermal contributions in experiments, which could be used to obtain reliable electron-phonon coupling constants more easily., Comment: Letter plus Suppl. Nanoparticles (NPs) have proven their applicability in biosensing, drug delivery, and photo-thermal therapy, but their performance depends critically on the distribution and number of functional groups on their surface. When studying surface functionalization using super-resolution microscopy, the NP modifies the fluorophores point-spread function (PSF). This leads to systematic mislocalizations in conventional analyses employing Gaussian PSFs. Here, we address this shortcoming by deriving the first-ever analytical PSF model for a fluorophore near a spherical NP. Its calculation is four orders of magnitude faster than numerical approaches and thus feasible for direct use in localization algorithms. We fit this model to individual 2D images from DNA-PAINT experiments on DNA-coated gold NPs and demonstrate extraction of the 3D positions of functional groups with <5 nm precision, revealing inhomogeneous surface coverage. Radio observation is crucial to understanding the wind mechanism of OB stars but very scarce. This work estimates the flux at 1450MHz ($S_{\rm 1.4GHz}$) of about 5,000 OB stars identified by the LAMOST spectroscopic survey and confirmed by the Gaia astrometric as well as astrophysical measurements. The calculation is performed under the free-free emission mechanism for wind with the mass loss rate derived from stellar parameters. The estimated $S_{\rm 1.4GHz}$ distributes from $10^{-11}$Jy to $10^{-3}$Jy with the peak at about $10^{-8}$Jy. This implies that the complete SKA-II can detect more than half of them, and some tens of objects are detectable by FAST without considering source confusion. An array of FAST would increase the detectable sample by two orders of magnitude., Comment: 15 pages. 8 figures

The young, compact, very high surface brightness but low excitation planetary nebula (PN) BD+303639 is one of the very few PNe that have been reported to exhibit the 21cm HI emission line. As part of a long-term programme to search for circumstellar atomic hydrogen, we observed the 21cm feature toward BD+303639 with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Assuming a direct association between the PN and the detected HI emission, these new observations show that this surrounding emission is significantly more spatially extended than indicated by previous interferometric observations, and can be resolved into two velocity components. The estimated HI mass is larger than 100M_sun, invalidating an origin from the host star itself or its ejecta for the emitting material. We discuss the possibility that the extended HI emission stems from the interstellar medium (ISM) swept out over time by the stellar wind. Moreover, we report tentative detections of HI absorption features lying near and blueward of the systemic velocity of this PN, which are probably from a stalled asterosphere at the outer boundary of the expanding ionized region. The mass of the gas producing the HI absorption is insufficient to solve the so-called `PN missing mass problem'.
