Abstract

An easy-to-manufacture setup for a displacement sensor based on plastic optical fiber (POF) is analyzed, showing computational and experimental results. If the displacement is the consequence of force or pressure applied to the device, this can be used as a force or pressure transducer. Its principle of operation consists of bending a POF section around a flexible cylinder and measuring light attenuation when the whole set is subjected to side pressure. Attenuations are obtained computationally as a function of side deformation for different design parameters. Experimental results with an actually built prototype are also provided. Abstract

In this paper we present a complete low-cost sensor system including fiber-optics, electronics, and data processing implemented on a simple microcontroller. The system can be operated stand-alone, showing real-time temperatures on a display or connected for data logging to a PC. Cheap ruby spheres or half-spheres from mass production are integrated in a small fiber-optic sensor head. All electronics including a high-power blue LED and a Si photodiode are easily integrated on a modified commercial add-on board on top of a Nucleo-64 development kit for STM32 microcontrollers. Temperature measurement is done by fitting the exponential decay of the ruby fluorescence after pulsed excitation. Calibration and testing was done in a climate chamber, achieving a temperature accuracy of 0.5 K within a range of -40°C to +80°C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We investigate effects that occur in large core (1 mm) step index (SI) polymer optical fibers (POF) when exposed to temperature changes. The volume of Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and hence the length of a SI-POF is known to increase with rising temperatures due to thermal expansion. On the other hand its refractive index is also temperature-dependent and decreases when the fiber is heated. A ray of light travelling along the fiber is therefore facing two contrary effects: The geometrical length of its path through the fiber increases while it is propagating at a higher speed. As a consequence also the modal dispersion of the fiber depends on the temperature. The effects are evaluated in an experimental setup and are in good agreement with a corresponding ray tracing simulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Passive splitting of optical transmission lines result in high additional system attenuation, proportional to the amount of desired clients. Splitting an optical signal, using a one to eight star coupler with bi-direction data transmission over a single POF, results in a splitting attenuation of about 28.5 dB. Adding a transmission line of 100 m SI-POF results in an overall system attenuation of 35.5 dB at 530 nm. Achieving flexible and robust data transmission with the given system requires a specialized signal modulation. Therefore, a basic frequency modulation is used to convert the data to an analog signal that is then modulated and transmitted over POF. Demodulation and synchronization of the analog signal are done by a FFT (Fast Fourier Transform). Using frequency modulation with high performance optical receivers, data can be transmitted over a distance of up to 400 m with an approximated BER of about 1.6×10-2 and a data rate of 781,25 kBit/s.
