This article presents a concise overview of research on the Northern Kresy variety of the Polish language (polszczyzna północnokresowa). There is extensive literature on the subject, but there is still no comprehensive bibliography which would accurately document the rich legacy of several generations of researchers working in this field of study. Northern Kresy Polish is a variety of the Polish language which formed in the historical Slavic-Baltic borderland, mainly as a result of the processes of Polonisation of the local population. Contacts between various ethnolinguistic communities resulted in significant social and territorial diversity of Northern Kresy Polish in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The differences between its variants consist mainly in the frequency of features and the scale of influence of local languages and dialects on the grammatical system and vocabulary of Polish. Nevertheless, it is possible to identify a set of constitutive features of Northern Kresy Polish which function throughout its entire geographical area. Currently, Northern Kresy Polish is defined as the language of the Polish minority in Belarus, Lithuania and Latvia. It is apparent that the Polish language in all of these countries is in decline., Niniejszy artykuł przedstawia w sposób syntetyczny dotychczasowe badania na temat północnokresowej odmiany języka polskiego. Powstała już na ten temat obszerna literatura, ale ciągle brakuje pełnej bibliografii przedmiotu porządkującej bogaty dorobek kilku pokoleń badaczy. Polszczyzna północnokresowa to odmiana języka polskiego ukształtowana na historycznym pograniczu słowiańsko-bałtyckim. O jej powstaniu zadecydowały przede wszystkim procesy polonizacyjne miejscowej ludności. Kontakty z różnymi wspólnotami etniczno-językowymi sprawiły, że polszczyzna północnokresowa już w wieku XVII i XVIII wykazywała duże zróżnicowanie pod względem społecznym i terytorialnym. Różnice te polegają głównie na frekwencji cech i skali wpływów języków i dialektów miejscowych na system gramatyczny i słownictwo polszczyzny. Mimo to można wykazać zestaw cech konstytutywnych dla polszczyzny północnokresowej funkcjonujących na całym jej obszarze geograficznym. Aktualnie polszczyzna północnokresowa jest definiowana jako język polskiej mniejszości na Białorusi, Litwie i Łotwie. We wszystkich tych krajach widoczna jest tendencja do zaniku języka polskiego.

An Anthropological Portrayal of the Native Inhabitants of the Polish-German Borderland Born Before 1945The article presents the results of field research carried out among the native inhabitants of the Lubusz Voivodship who were born in the former eastern territory of the then German state before 1945. Between 2009 and 2011, the authors conducted in-depth anthropological interviews with 28 informants in 17 localities in the Voivodship. These informants are the last remaining representatives of the former populace in this area, since the majority of the local inhabitants left Poland: some were evacuated or fled in the face of the advancing Red Army in 1945, others were victims of the so-called “wild” expulsions as well as resettlements, and still others emigrated under family reunification programs. One more factor was economic emigration, which has continued up to the present day. Thus, those inhabitants who remained are the last witnesses to the history of life experiences which began here already in pre-World War II times. This makes them special as they have a unique sense of rootedness in the region, unlike other inhabitants, who are newcomers there.The external identity of the interviewees, that is, the identity given to them by others, is often different from their internal, subjective identity, which is felt and expressed in narratives. In the period following World War II the native populace was termed “autochtons”. The category of “autochton” was constructed from the outside, taking into consideration only elements of Polish culture, and completely ignored any ties with German culture. The presence of the “autochtons” officially served the purpose of legitimizing the so-called “recovered territories”, that is, the territories incorporated into Poland in 1945. On the other hand, the autochtons were ascribed a German identity by new settlers who arrived in the Lubusz land from different regions of Poland, and who labeled the locals “Germans” or “Nazis”. This is a review of the monograph by Gerd Hentschel, Jolanta Tambor, István Fekete (“Das Schlesische und seine Sprecher: Etablierung in der Gesellschaft, Attitüden, Vitalität der Germanismen / The Silesian lekt and its users: Dissemination, social attitudes towards the Silesian lekt, and the vitality of Germanisms in the Silesian lekt”), in which the authors present the linguistic situation of Upper Silesia, establish the frequency of Germanisms and conduct quantitative research (with a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of these analyses).
