Abstract

This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002), and Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs properties (CERN-2013-004). Abstract

We revisit a simple model that combines minimal gauge mediation and the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model. We show that one can obtain a 125 GeV Standard Model-like Higgs boson with stops as light as 1.1 TeV, thanks to the mixing of the Higgs with a singlet state at O(90-100) GeV. Sparticle searches at the LHC may come with additional b-jets or taus and may involve displaced vertices. The sparticle production cross-section at the 13 TeV LHC can be O(10-100) fb, leading to great prospects for discovery in the early phase of LHC Run II., Comment: 5 pages, 1 figure. v2 has added electroweak cross-section information and comments about the domain wall problem and warm dark matter constraints. v4 has two additional references

Abstract

We consider field sets that do not form complete SU(5) multiplets, but exactly preserve the one-loop MSSM prediction for $\alpha_3(M_Z)$ independently of the value of their mass. Such fields can raise the unification scale in different ways, through a delayed convergence of the gauge couplings, a fake unified running below the GUT scale, or a postponed unification after a hoax crossing at a lower scale. The $\alpha_3(M_Z)$ prediction is independent of the mass of the new fields, while the GUT scale often is not, which allows to vary the GUT scale. Such "magic" fields represent a useful tool in GUT model building. For example, they can be used to fix gauge coupling unification in certain two step breakings of the unified group, to suppress large KK thresholds in models with extra dimensions, or they can be interpreted as messengers of supersymmetry breaking in GMSB models., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

We show that most features of the mass and mixing pattern of the second and third SM fermion families can be accounted for without making use of flavour symmetries or other types of flavour dynamics. We discuss the implications for flavour phenomenology, in particular for the $\tau\to\mu\gamma$ decay rate, and comment on LFV effects at colliders. We show that the model can be embedded in a full SO(10) supersymmetric GUT in 5 dimensions that preserves the successful MSSM gauge coupling unification prediction for $\alpha_s$. Interesting features of this embedding are i) the connection of one of the hierarchy parameters with the strong coupling assumption, ii) the absence of KK threshold effects on the $\alpha_s$ prediction at one loop, and iii) the shift of the GUT scale up to about $10^{17}\GeV$. Proton decay is under control, also due to the larger GUT scale. Abstract

The measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of identified hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of 160 GeV/c muons on a transversely polarised 6LiD target at COMPASS are presented. The results for charged pions and charged and neutral kaons correspond to all data available, which were collected from 2002 to 2004. For all final state particles both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be small, compatible with zero within the statistical errors, in line with the previously published results for not identified charged hadrons, and with the expected cancellation between the u- and d-quark contributions., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, added author Efremov, calculated pure kaon asymmetries instead of those for experimental kaon/pion mixture (mainly error affected)

Abstract

We have measured differential cross sections for \pp elastic scattering with internal fiber targets in the recirculating beam of the proton synchrotron COSY. Measurements were made continuously during acceleration for projectile kinetic energies between 0.23 and 2.59 GeV in the angular range $30 \leq \theta_{c.m.} \leq 90$ deg. Details of the apparatus and the data analysis are given and the resulting excitation functions and angular distributions presented. The precision of each data point is typically better than 4%, and a relative normalization uncertainty of only 2.5% within an excitation function has been reached. The impact on phase shift analysis as well as upper bounds on possible resonant contributions in lower partial waves are discussed., Comment: 23 pages 29 figures

Abstract

Thin polypropylene (CH$_2$) fibers have been used for internal experiments in storage rings as an option for hydrogen targets. The change of the hydrogen content due to the radiation dose applied by the circulating proton beam has been investigated in the range $1\cdot10^6$ to $2\cdot10^8$~Gy at beam momenta of 1.5 to 3 GeV/c by comparing the elastic pp-scattering yield to that from inelastic p-carbon reactions. It is found that the loss of hydrogen as a function of applied dose receives contributions from a fast and a slow component., Comment: 14 pages 5 figures

Abstract

The EDDA-Detector at the Cooler-Synchrotron COSY/J\"ulich has been operated with an internal CH$_2$ fiber target to measure proton-proton elastic scattering differential cross sections. For the data analysis knowledge of beam parameters, like position, width and angle, are indispensable. We have developed a method to obtain these values with high precision from the azimuthal and polar angles of the ejectiles only, by exploiting the coplanarity of the two final state protons with the beam and the kinematic correlation. Abstract

At the Cooler Synchrotron COSY/J\"ulich spin correlation parameters in elastic proton-proton (pp) scattering have been measured with a 2.11 GeV polarized proton beam and a polarized hydrogen atomic beam target. We report results for A$_{NN}$, A$_{SS}$, and A_${SL}$ for c.m. scattering angles between 30$^o$ and 90$^o$. Our data on A$_{SS}$ -- the first measurement of this observable above 800 MeV -- clearly disagrees with predictions of available of pp scattering phase shift solutions while A$_{NN}$ and A_${SL}$ are reproduced reasonably well. We show that in the direct reconstruction of the scattering amplitudes from the body of available pp elastic scattering data at 2.1 GeV the number of possible solutions is considerably reduced., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Nachdem einleitend deren Relevanz reflektiert wird, wird diese vorgestellt, indem Untersuchungsgegenstände, Analyseprozesse und Ziele der quantitativen/standardisierten und qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse erläutert werden. Herausgearbeitet werden dann die Analyseschwerpunkte der Inhalts- und Medienanalysen im Bereich der Evaluation von Wissenschaftskommunikation und ihrer Begleitforschung. Diese sind u. a. (1) Modi der Wissenschaftskommunikation, (2) die Genauigkeit der Berichterstattung, (3) die Darstellung, das Framing und die Bewertung von Wissenschaft und wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnissen, und (4) Dialogizität und Funktionalität der Wissenschaftskommunikation bzw. Funktionen der Öffentlichkeitsarbeit. Im letzten Punkt wird ein Ausblick gegeben und relevante Forschungslücken werden herausgestellt.

Abstract

Wissenschaftskommunikation kann unterschiedliche Ziele verfolgen, sich an unterschiedliche Zielgruppen richten und dabei unterschiedliche Maßnahmen einsetzen. Ob sie die beabsichtigten Wirkungen erzielt, lässt sich erst durch eine systematische Evaluation feststellen. Dieser Beitrag führt in die Logik von Evaluation ein, indem es grundlegende Evaluationsmodelle, -stufen und -objekte erklärt. Es stellt ein integriertes Evaluationsmodell für die Wissenschaftskommunikation vor, das a) Evaluation als letzte Phase in einem übergeordneten Zyklus begreift (Situationsanalyse, Planung, Umsetzung), b) zwei Evaluationsformen (summativ, formativ) dazu in Bezug setzt, c) vier Evaluationsstufen (Inputs, Outputs, Outcomes, Impacts) unterscheidet und d) verschiedene Evaluationsobjekte (Projekt, Kampagne, Programme) und Zeithorizonte (kurz-, mittel-, langfristig) berücksichtigt. Der Beitrag gibt zudem einen Überblick über sozialwissenschaftliche und betriebswirtschaftliche Methoden und typische Kennzahlen für die Evaluation der Wissenschaftskommunikation.

Abstract

We present the first fully quantitative compositional maps of lunar meteorite NWA 2995 using electron microprobe stage mapping, and compare selected clast mineralogy and chemistry. NWA 2995 is a feldspathic fragmental breccia containing numerous highland fine grained lithologies, including anorthosite, norite, olivine basalt, subophitic basalt, gabbro, KREEP-like basalt, granulitic and glassy impact melts, coarse-grained mineral fragments, Fe-Ni metal, and glassy matrix [1]. Chips of NWA 2995, representing these diverse materials, were analyzed by INAA and fused-bead electron-probe microanalysis (EPMA); comparison of analytical data suggests grouping of lunar meteorites NWA 2995, 2996, 3190, 4503, 5151, and 5152. The mean composition of NWA 2995 corresponds to a 2:1 mixture of feldspathic and mare material, with approximately 5% KREEP component [2]. Clast mineral chemistry and petrologic interpretation of paired stone NWA 2996 has been reported by Mercer et al. [3], and Gross et al. [4]. This study combines advances in quantitative EPMA compositional mapping and data analysis, as applied to selected mafic clasts in a polished section of NWA 2995, to investigate the origin of mafic lithic components and to demonstrate a procedural framework for petrologic analysis.

Abstract

We have undertaken an Ar-Ar thermochronology investigation as part of a coordinated multichronometer analysis of a single Apollo 12 impact- melt breccia to demonstrate the wide range of information that can be obtained for a single complex rock. This has implications for the age of formation, component makeup, and subsequent impact/shock and exposure history of the sample. This study also serves as a capabilities demonstration for the proposed MoonRise Mission [1]. The goal of this investigation is to elucidate the history of this sample through coordinated 40Ar*/39Ar, Sm-Nd, Rb-Sr and zircon 207Pb-206Pb ages along with geochemical and petrographic context on a relatively small (approximately 450 mg) sample. Here, we report preliminary results of the Ar-Ar thermochronology.
