Abstract

Accurate spectroscopy of highly charged high-Z ions in a storage ring is demonstrated to be feasible by the use of specially adapted crystal optics. The method has been applied for the measurement of the 1s Lamb shift in hydrogen-like gold (Au 78+) in a storage ring through spectroscopy of the Lyman x rays. This measurement represents the first result obtained for a high-Z element using high-resolution wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy in the hard x-ray regime, paving the way for sensitivity to higher-order QED effects.

Since it remains unclear how substantial sleep alterations need to be in order to affect the pain system and lead to a coupling of both functions, the present study aimed at providing sufficient variance for co-variance analyses by examining a sample consisting of both healthy subjects and chronic pain patients.Methods: A sample of 20 chronic musculoskeletal pain patients and 20 healthy controls was examined. This sample was assumed to show high inter-individual variability in sleep and pain, as pain patients frequently report sleep disturbances, whereas healthy subjects were required to be pain-free and normal sleepers. Sleep of two non-consecutive nights was measured using portable polysomnography and questionnaires. Experimental pain parameters (pressure pain thresholds (PPT), temporal summation of pain (TSP), conditioned pain modulation (CPM)) and situational pain catastrophizing (SCQ) were assessed in laboratory sessions before and after sleep. Pain patients’ clinical pain was assessed via questionnaire.Results: As expected, both groups differed in several sleep parameters (reduced total sleep time and sleep efficiency, more time awake after sleep onset, lower subjective sleep quality in the patients) and in a few pain parameters (lower PPTs in the patients). In contrast, no differences were found in TSP, CPM, and SCQ. Contrary to our expectations, regression analyses indicated no prediction of overnight pain changes by sleep parameters.Conclusion: Since sleep parameters were hardly apt to predict overnight pain changes, this leaves the association of both systems mainly unproven when using between-subject variance for verification.Keywords: sleep, chronic pain, experimental pain, clinical pain

Abstract

Knowledge of the characteristics of natural climate variability is vital when assessing the range of plausible future climate trajectories in the next decades to centuries. The reliable detection of climate fluctuations on multidecadal to centennial timescales depends on proxy reconstructions and model simulations, as the instrumental record extends back only a few decades in most parts of the world. Systematic comparisons between model-simulated and proxy-based inferences of natural variability, however, often seem contradictory. Locally, simulated temperature variability is consistently smaller on multidecadal and longer timescales than is indicated by proxy-based reconstructions, implying that climate models or proxy interpretations might have deficiencies. In contrast, at global scales, studies found agreement between simulated and proxy reconstructed temperature variations. Here we review the evidence regarding the scale of natural temperature variability during recent millennia. We identify systematic reconstruction deficiencies that may contribute to differing local and global model–proxy agreement but conclude that they are probably insufficient to resolve such discrepancies. Instead, we argue that regional climate variations persisted for longer timescales than climate models simulating past climate states are able to reproduce. This would imply an underestimation of the regional variability on multidecadal and longer timescales and would bias climate projections and attribution studies. Thus, efforts are needed to improve the simulation of natural variability in climate models accompanied by further refining proxy-based inferences of variability.

7. Variability of surface temperature and precipitation during past and future warming episodes

Abstract

The projected increases in Earth’s mean temperature entail substantial changes in the climate’s variability. Appropriate mitigation and adaptation measures require understanding of these changes since they impact for example the occurrence of extreme events. While projections of the global mean temperature are relatively well constrained based on the employed forcing scenario, they are highly uncertain with respect to the hydrological cycle and local temperature variability. Thus, examining how periods of past warming can help constrain these changes is of vital importance.To this end, we examine how the variability of surface temperature and precipitation changes in simulations of past and future warming from climate models of varying complexity and compare these with changes in proxy-based reconstructions. Based on the simulations, we analyze the moments of the distributions of temperature and precipitation (variance, skewness and kurtosis), as well as the power spectra with a focus on societally-relevant annual to centennial timescales. The analysis contrasts the projected changes under future warming scenarios with those found in transient simulations of the Last Deglaciation from models ranging from an energy balance model to Earth System Models. Changes observed in the simulations of the Last Deglaciation often highly depend on timescale and forcings, in particular changing volcanic activity, meltwater release and ice distributions alter patterns of variability. Based on this, we examine how the faster rate of future change impacts, and potentially limits, the conclusions to be drawn about future climatic changes based on past periods of warming., The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)

Abstract

In this study, we trace trends and the evolution of connotations of migrants and refugees in the US from 1987 to 2018, using automatic methods of text analysis. To do so, we apply methods from computational linguistics research, and discuss their respective added-value. We rely on complementary data sources: newspaper articles, transcripts of TV broadcast and social media data. More specifically, we diachronically measure attitudes to migra- tion, by analysing spikes in media discourse, associations that terms from the domain of migration typically have, and positive and negative stance that the topics in the migration discourse have provoked over the last two decades. Our results show that: (i) elections and important events lead to spikes, and the interest in migration increases over time; (ii) legal issues grow more important in media discourse of migration; (iii) distributional semantics confirms the increase of legal concerns, and demonstrates that migrant and refugee are often used as synonyms; (iv) sentiment towards migration is generally becoming more positive.

Abstract

Radio frequency sputtering-effected deposition of Fe/C multilayers on two silicon substrates leads to morphological discrepancies in the surface quality of the layers deposition, as revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). STM data indicates the crudeness of the replication phenomenon and suggests that the smoothness of the final state of deposited surface relies on the smoothness of the silicon substrate. A Gaussian height pattern characterizes the two samples.

The capability of translating capped mRNA is reduced by the human rhinovirus and the mammalian enterovirus. The infection allows translation of uncapped viral RNA. The cleavage of the eukaryotic initiation factor 4-gamma is induced by the viral proteinase 2A. The soluble form of Escherichia coli provides an expression for the nature proteinases 2A of human rhinovirus 2 and coxsackievirus B4.
