1. Morph: A Motion-free Physics Optimization Framework for Human Motion Generation

Abstract: Human motion generation plays a vital role in applications such as digital humans and humanoid robot control. However, most existing approaches disregard physics constraints, leading to the frequent production of physically implausible motions with pronounced artifacts such as floating and foot sliding. In this paper, we propose \textbf{Morph}, a \textbf{Mo}tion-f\textbf{r}ee \textbf{ph}ysics optimization framework, comprising a Motion Generator and a Motion Physics Refinement module, for enhancing physical plausibility without relying on costly real-world motion data. Specifically, the Motion Generator is responsible for providing large-scale synthetic motion data, while the Motion Physics Refinement Module utilizes these synthetic data to train a motion imitator within a physics simulator, enforcing physical constraints to project the noisy motions into a physically-plausible space. These physically refined motions, in turn, are used to fine-tune the Motion Generator, further enhancing its capability. Experiments on both text-to-motion and music-to-dance generation tasks demonstrate that our framework achieves state-of-the-art motion generation quality while improving physical plausibility drastically., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

2. Manipulating spectral transitions and photonic transmission in a non-Hermitian optical system through nanoparticle perturbations

Abstract: In recent years, extensive research has been dedicated to the study of parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetry, which involves the engineered balance of gain and loss in non-Hermitian optics. Complementary to $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry, the concept of anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry has emerged as a natural framework for describing the dynamics of open systems with dissipations. In this letter, we study spectral transitions and photon transmission in a linear spinning resonator perturbed by nanoparticles. First, we demonstrate that by precisely manipulating the nanoparticle perturbations, the eigenvalues(or spectra) of a non-Hermitian system satisfying anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry can transit to that of a quasi-closed Hermitian system. Second, we outline the essential conditions for constructing a quasi-closed system and analyze its dynamic behavior with respect to photon transmission. By adjusting the rotational angular velocity of the spinning resonator and the strength of the nanoparticle perturbations, the quasi-closed system enables a variety of photon distribution behaviors, which may have significant applications in quantum devices. 3. Minimizing information loss reduces spiking neuronal networks to differential equations

Abstract: Spiking neuronal networks (SNNs) are widely used in computational neuroscience, from biologically realistic modeling of local cortical networks to phenomenological modeling of the whole brain. Despite their prevalence, a systematic mathematical theory for finite-sized SNNs remains elusive, even for idealized homogeneous networks. The primary challenges are twofold: 1) the rich, parameter-sensitive SNN dynamics, and 2) the singularity and irreversibility of spikes. These challenges pose significant difficulties when relating SNNs to systems of differential equations, leading previous studies to impose additional assumptions or to focus on individual dynamic regimes. In this study, we introduce a Markov approximation of homogeneous SNN dynamics to minimize information loss when translating SNNs into ordinary differential equations. Our only assumption for the Markov approximation is the fast self-decorrelation of synaptic conductances. The system of ordinary differential equations derived from the Markov model effectively captures high-frequency partial synchrony and the metastability of finite-neuron networks produced by interacting excitatory and inhibitory populations. Besides accurately predicting dynamical statistics, such as firing rates, our theory also quantitatively captures the geometry of attractors and bifurcation structures of SNNs. 4. VideoEspresso: A Large-Scale Chain-of-Thought Dataset for Fine-Grained Video Reasoning via Core Frame Selection

Abstract: The advancement of Large Vision Language Models (LVLMs) has significantly improved multimodal understanding, yet challenges remain in video reasoning tasks due to the scarcity of high-quality, large-scale datasets. Existing video question-answering (VideoQA) datasets often rely on costly manual annotations with insufficient granularity or automatic construction methods with redundant frame-by-frame analysis, limiting their scalability and effectiveness for complex reasoning. To address these challenges, we introduce VideoEspresso, a novel dataset that features VideoQA pairs preserving essential spatial details and temporal coherence, along with multimodal annotations of intermediate reasoning steps. Our construction pipeline employs a semantic-aware method to reduce redundancy, followed by generating QA pairs using GPT-4o. We further develop video Chain-of-Thought (CoT) annotations to enrich reasoning processes, guiding GPT-4o in extracting logical relationships from QA pairs and video content. To exploit the potential of high-quality VideoQA pairs, we propose a Hybrid LVLMs Collaboration framework, featuring a Frame Selector and a two-stage instruction fine-tuned reasoning LVLM. This framework adaptively selects core frames and performs CoT reasoning using multimodal evidence. Evaluated on our proposed benchmark with 14 tasks against 9 popular LVLMs, our method outperforms existing baselines on most tasks, demonstrating superior video reasoning capabilities. 5. Guided MRI Reconstruction via Schr\'odinger Bridge

Abstract: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a multi-contrast imaging technique in which different contrast images share similar structural information. However, conventional diffusion models struggle to effectively leverage this structural similarity. Recently, the Schr\"odinger Bridge (SB), a nonlinear extension of the diffusion model, has been proposed to establish diffusion paths between any distributions, allowing the incorporation of guided priors. This study proposes an SB-based, multi-contrast image-guided reconstruction framework that establishes a diffusion bridge between the guiding and target image distributions. By using the guiding image along with data consistency during sampling, the target image is reconstructed more accurately. To better address structural differences between images, we introduce an inversion strategy from the field of image editing, termed $\mathbf{I}^2$SB-inversion. Experiments on a paried T1 and T2-FLAIR datasets demonstrate that $\mathbf{I}^2$SB-inversion achieve a high acceleration up to 14.4 and outperforms existing methods in terms of both reconstruction accuracy and stability.

6. Versatile Cataract Fundus Image Restoration Model Utilizing Unpaired Cataract and High-quality Images

Abstract: Cataract is one of the most common blinding eye diseases and can be treated by surgery. However, because cataract patients may also suffer from other blinding eye diseases, ophthalmologists must diagnose them before surgery. The cloudy lens of cataract patients forms a hazy degeneration in the fundus images, making it challenging to observe the patient's fundus vessels, which brings difficulties to the diagnosis process. To address this issue, this paper establishes a new cataract image restoration method named Catintell. It contains a cataract image synthesizing model, Catintell-Syn, and a restoration model, Catintell-Res. Catintell-Syn uses GAN architecture with fully unsupervised data to generate paired cataract-like images with realistic style and texture rather than the conventional Gaussian degradation algorithm. Meanwhile, Catintell-Res is an image restoration network that can improve the quality of real cataract fundus images using the knowledge learned from synthetic cataract images. Extensive experiments show that Catintell-Res outperforms other cataract image restoration methods in PSNR with 39.03 and SSIM with 0.9476. Furthermore, the universal restoration ability that Catintell-Res gained from unpaired cataract images can process cataract images from various datasets. We hope the models can help ophthalmologists identify other blinding eye diseases of cataract patients and inspire more medical image restoration methods in the future., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

7. Acquire Precise and Comparable Fundus Image Quality Score: FTHNet and FQS Dataset

Abstract: The retinal fundus images are utilized extensively in the diagnosis, and their quality can directly affect the diagnosis results. However, due to the insufficient dataset and algorithm application, current fundus image quality assessment (FIQA) methods are not powerful enough to meet ophthalmologists` demands. In this paper, we address the limitations of datasets and algorithms in FIQA. First, we establish a new FIQA dataset, Fundus Quality Score(FQS), which includes 2246 fundus images with two labels: a continuous Mean Opinion Score varying from 0 to 100 and a three-level quality label. Then, we propose a FIQA Transformer-based Hypernetwork (FTHNet) to solve these tasks with regression results rather than classification results in conventional FIQA works. The FTHNet is optimized for the FIQA tasks with extensive experiments. Results on our FQS dataset show that the FTHNet can give quality scores for fundus images with PLCC of 0.9423 and SRCC of 0.9488, significantly outperforming other methods with fewer parameters and less computation complexity.We successfully build a dataset and model addressing the problems of current FIQA methods. Furthermore, the model deployment experiments demonstrate its potential in automatic medical image quality control. 8. LiTformer: Efficient Modeling and Analysis of High-Speed Link Transmitters Using Non-Autoregressive Transformer

Abstract: High-speed serial links are fundamental to energy-efficient and high-performance computing systems such as artificial intelligence, 5G mobile and automotive, enabling low-latency and high-bandwidth communication. Transmitters (TXs) within these links are key to signal quality, while their modeling presents challenges due to nonlinear behavior and dynamic interactions with links. In this paper, we propose LiTformer: a Transformer-based model for high-speed link TXs, with a non-sequential encoder and a Transformer decoder to incorporate link parameters and capture long-range dependencies of output signals. We employ a non-autoregressive mechanism in model training and inference for parallel prediction of the signal sequence. LiTformer achieves precise TX modeling considering link impacts including crosstalk from multiple links, and provides fast prediction for various long-sequence signals with high data rates. Experimental results show that LiTformer achieves 148-456$\times$ speedup for 2-link TXs and 404-944$\times$ speedup for 16-link with mean relative errors of 0.68-1.25%, supporting 4-bit signals at Gbps data rates of single-ended and differential TXs, as well as PAM4 TXs.

Abstract: The $C\!P$ asymmetry and branching fraction of the CKM-suppressed decay $B^+\!\to J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2mu\psi\,\pi^+$ are precisely measured relative to the favoured decay $B^+\!\to J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2mu\psi\,K^+$, using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ recorded at center-of-mass energy of $13~\mathrm{TeV}$ during 2016--2018. The results of the $C\!P$ asymmetry difference and branching fraction ratio are \begin{align*} \Delta\mathcal{A}^{C\!P} &\equiv \mathcal{A}^{C\!P}(B^+ \to J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2mu\psi\,\pi^+) - \mathcal{A}^{C\!P}(B^+ \to J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2mu\psi\,K^+) = (1.29 \pm 0.49 \pm 0.08) \times 10^{-2}, \end{align*} \begin{equation*} \mathcal{R}_{\pi/K} \equiv \frac{\mathcal{B}(B^+ \!\to J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2mu\psi\,\pi^+)}{\mathcal{B}(B^+ \!\to J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2mu\psi\,K^+)} = (3.852 \pm 0.022 \pm 0.018) \times 10^{-2}. \end{equation*} where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. 10. Iterative Camera-LiDAR Extrinsic Optimization via Surrogate Diffusion

Abstract: Cameras and LiDAR are essential sensors for autonomous vehicles. Camera-LiDAR data fusion compensate for deficiencies of stand-alone sensors but relies on precise extrinsic calibration. Many learning-based calibration methods predict extrinsic parameters in a single step. Driven by the growing demand for higher accuracy, a few approaches utilize multi-range models or integrate multiple methods to improve extrinsic parameter predictions, but these strategies incur extended training times and require additional storage for separate models. To address these issues, we propose a single-model iterative approach based on surrogate diffusion to significantly enhance the capacity of individual calibration methods. By applying a buffering technique proposed by us, the inference time of our surrogate diffusion is 43.7% less than that of multi-range models. Additionally, we create a calibration network as our denoiser, featuring both projection-first and encoding-first branches for effective point feature extraction. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our diffusion model outperforms other single-model iterative methods and delivers competitive results compared to multi-range models. Our denoiser exceeds state-of-the-art calibration methods, reducing the rotation error by 24.5% compared to the second-best method. Abstract: Soft metals like lithium and sodium play a critical role in battery technology owing to their high energy density. Texture formation by grain selection growth of soft metals during electrochemical processes is a crucial factor affecting power and safety. Developing a framework to understand and control grain growth is a multifaceted challenge. Here, a general thermodynamic theory and phase-field model are formulated to study grain selection growth of soft metals. Our study focuses on the interplay between surface energy and atomic mobility-related intrinsic strain energy in grain selection growth. Differences in grain selection growth arise from the anisotropy in surface energy and diffusion barrier of soft metal atoms. Our findings highlight the kinetic limitations of solid-state Li metal batteries, which originate from load stress-induced surface energy anisotropy. Abstract: An angular analysis of the $B_s^0 \rightarrow \phi e^+e^-$ decay is performed using the proton-proton collision dataset collected between 2011 and 2018 by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and $13\,{\rm TeV}$. The analysis is performed in the very low dielectron invariant mass-squared region between $0.0009$ and $0.2615\,{\rm GeV}^2\!/c^4$. The longitudinal polarisation fraction of the $\phi$ meson is measured to be less than $11.5\%$ at $90\%$ confidence level. The $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathcal{R}e C\!P}$ observable, which is related to the lepton forward-backward asymmetry, is measured to be $0.116 \pm 0.155 \pm 0.006$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The transverse asymmetries, $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{(2)}$ and $A_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathcal{I}m C\!P}$ , which are sensitive to the virtual photon polarisation, are found to be $-0.045 \pm 0.235 \pm 0.014$ and $0.002 \pm 0.247 \pm 0.016$, respectively. 13. CMATH: Cross-Modality Augmented Transformer with Hierarchical Variational Distillation for Multimodal Emotion Recognition in Conversation

Abstract: Multimodal emotion recognition in conversation (MER) aims to accurately identify emotions in conversational utterances by integrating multimodal information. Previous methods usually treat multimodal information as equal quality and employ symmetric architectures to conduct multimodal fusion. However, in reality, the quality of different modalities usually varies considerably, and utilizing a symmetric architecture is difficult to accurately recognize conversational emotions when dealing with uneven modal information. Furthermore, fusing multi-modality information in a single granularity may fail to adequately integrate modal information, exacerbating the inaccuracy in emotion recognition. In this paper, we propose a novel Cross-Modality Augmented Transformer with Hierarchical Variational Distillation, called CMATH, which consists of two major components, i.e., Multimodal Interaction Fusion and Hierarchical Variational Distillation. The former is comprised of two submodules, including Modality Reconstruction and Cross-Modality Augmented Transformer (CMA-Transformer), where Modality Reconstruction focuses on obtaining high-quality compressed representation of each modality, and CMA-Transformer adopts an asymmetric fusion strategy which treats one modality as the central modality and takes others as auxiliary modalities. The latter first designs a variational fusion network to fuse the fine-grained representations learned by CMA- Transformer into a coarse-grained representations. Then, it introduces a hierarchical distillation framework to maintain the consistency between modality representations with different granularities. Experiments on the IEMOCAP and MELD datasets demonstrate that our proposed model outperforms previous state-of-the-art baselines. Abstract: The first measurement of $\phi(1020)$ meson production in fixed-target $p$Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=68.5$ GeV is presented. 15. A Krylov space approach to Singular Value Decomposition in non-Hermitian systems

Abstract: We propose a novel tridiagonalization approach for non-Hermitian random matrices and Hamiltonians using singular value decomposition (SVD). This technique leverages the real and non-negative nature of singular values, bypassing the complex eigenvalues typically found in non-Hermitian systems. We analyze the tridiagonal elements, namely the Lanczos coefficients and the associated Krylov (spread) complexity, appropriately defined through the SVD, across several examples including Ginibre ensembles and the non-Hermitian Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model. We demonstrate that in chaotic cases, the complexity exhibits a distinct peak due to the repulsion between singular values, a feature absent in integrable cases. 16. AdaSemiCD: An Adaptive Semi-Supervised Change Detection Method Based on Pseudo-Label Evaluation

Abstract: Change Detection (CD) is an essential field in remote sensing, with a primary focus on identifying areas of change in bi-temporal image pairs captured at varying intervals of the same region by a satellite. The data annotation process for the CD task is both time-consuming and labor-intensive. To make better use of the scarce labeled data and abundant unlabeled data, we present an adaptive dynamic semi-supervised learning method, AdaSemiCD, to improve the use of pseudo-labels and optimize the training process. Initially, due to the extreme class imbalance inherent in CD, the model is more inclined to focus on the background class, and it is easy to confuse the boundary of the target object. Considering these two points, we develop a measurable evaluation metric for pseudo-labels that enhances the representation of information entropy by class rebalancing and amplification of confusing areas to give a larger weight to prospects change objects. Subsequently, to enhance the reliability of sample-wise pseudo-labels, we introduce the AdaFusion module, which is capable of dynamically identifying the most uncertain region and substituting it with more trustworthy content. Lastly, to ensure better training stability, we introduce the AdaEMA module, which updates the teacher model using only batches of trusted samples. Experimental results from LEVIR-CD, WHU-CD, and CDD datasets validate the efficacy and universality of our proposed adaptive training framework.

17. Protected chaos in a topological lattice

Abstract: The erratic nature of chaotic behavior is thought to erode the stability of periodic behavior, including topological oscillations. However, we discover that in the presence of chaos, non-trivial topology not only endures but also provides robust protection to chaotic dynamics within a topological lattice hosting non-linear oscillators. Despite the difficulty in defining topological invariants in non-linear settings, non-trivial topological robustness still persists in the parametric state of chaotic boundary oscillations. We demonstrate this interplay between chaos and topology by incorporating chaotic Chua's circuits into a topological Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) circuit. By extrapolating from the linear limit to deep into the non-linear regime, we find that distinctive correlations in the bulk and edge scroll dynamics effectively capture the topological origin of the protected chaos. Our findings suggest that topologically protected chaos can be robustly achieved across a broad spectrum of periodically-driven systems, thereby offering new avenues for the design of resilient and adaptable non-linear networks., Comment: 13 figures, 23 pages

Abstract: We propose a compressive yet effective mesh representation, Blocked and Patchified Tokenization (BPT), facilitating the generation of meshes exceeding 8k faces. BPT compresses mesh sequences by employing block-wise indexing and patch aggregation, reducing their length by approximately 75\% compared to the original sequences. This compression milestone unlocks the potential to utilize mesh data with significantly more faces, thereby enhancing detail richness and improving generation robustness. Empowered with the BPT, we have built a foundation mesh generative model training on scaled mesh data to support flexible control for point clouds and images. 19. UniHR: Hierarchical Representation Learning for Unified Knowledge Graph Link Prediction

Abstract: Beyond-triple fact representations including hyper-relational facts with auxiliary key-value pairs, temporal facts with additional timestamps, and nested facts implying relationships between facts, are gaining significant attention. However, existing link prediction models are usually designed for one specific type of facts, making it difficult to generalize to other fact representations. To overcome this limitation, we propose a Unified Hierarchical Representation learning framework (UniHR) for unified knowledge graph link prediction. It consists of a unified Hierarchical Data Representation (HiDR) module and a unified Hierarchical Structure Learning (HiSL) module as graph encoder. The HiDR module unifies hyper-relational KGs, temporal KGs, and nested factual KGs into triple-based representations. Then HiSL incorporates intra-fact and inter-fact message passing, focusing on enhancing the semantic information within individual facts and enriching the structural information between facts. Experimental results across 7 datasets from 3 types of KGs demonstrate that our UniHR outperforms baselines designed for one specific kind of KG, indicating strong generalization capability of HiDR form and the effectiveness of HiSL module. 20. Orthogonal Spin-Orbit Torque-Induced Deterministic Switching in NiO

Abstract: The electrical switching of antiferromagnet (AFM) is very important for the development of ultrafast magnetic random-access memory (MRAM). This task becomes more difficult in antiferromagnetic oxide NiO which has complex anisotropy. We show that by utilizing two spin-orbit torques (SOT) from orthogonal currents, one can deterministically switch the magnetic moments of NiO in two electrical distinguishable states that can be read out using the spin Hall magnetoresistance. This deterministic switching relies on the symmetry of SOT on different sublattices, where the sign reversal of magnetic moments leads to constructive torques in the beginning and balanced torques in the end. In addition, we show that the easy-plane anisotropy plays a key role in the switching, which has been ignored in some previous works. The uniform magnetic dynamics in this work provides a clear physical picture in understanding the SOT switching of NiO. Furthermore, the electrical writing and reading function in our device advances the development of AFM-MRAM.

21. Anomalous switching pattern in the ferrimagnetic memory cell

Abstract: Replacing the ferromagnet with ferrimagnet (FiM) in the magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) allows faster magnetization switching in picoseconds. The operation of a memory cell that consists of the MTJ and a transistor requires reversable magnetization switching. When a constant voltage is applied, we find that the spin-transfer torque can only switch the FiM-MTJ from parallel to antiparallel state. This stems from the small switching window of FiM and the dynamic resistance variation during the magnetization switching. We find the resulting current variation can be suppressed by reducing the magnetoresistance ratio. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the switching window can be expanded by adjusting the amount of Gd in FiM. We predict that the polarity of both switching current (Jc,switch) and oscillation current (Jc,osc) reverses at the angular momentum compensation point but not the magnetization compensation point. This anomalous dynamic behavior is attributed to the different physical nature of magnetization switching and oscillation in FiM, which must be considered when designing FiM-based MRAM.

However, these models often encounter challenges in dynamically changing knowledge, as well as in managing unknown static knowledge. Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) tackles this challenge and has shown a significant impact on LLMs. Actually, we find that the impact of RAG on the question answering capabilities of LLMs can be categorized into three groups: beneficial, neutral, and harmful. By minimizing retrieval requests that yield neutral or harmful results, we can effectively reduce both time and computational costs, while also improving the overall performance of LLMs. This insight motivates us to differentiate between types of questions using certain metrics as indicators, to decrease the retrieval ratio without compromising performance. In our work, we propose a method that is able to identify different types of questions from this view by training a Knowledge Boundary Model (KBM). Experiments conducted on 11 English and Chinese datasets illustrate that the KBM effectively delineates the knowledge boundary, significantly decreasing the proportion of retrievals required for optimal end-to-end performance. Specifically, we evaluate the effectiveness of KBM in three complex scenarios: dynamic knowledge, long-tail static knowledge, and multi-hop problems, as well as its functionality as an external LLM plug-in.

Abstract: The dissociation of quarkonium states with different binding energies produced in heavy-ion collisions is a powerful probe for investigating the formation and properties of the quark-gluon plasma. The ratio of production cross-sections of $\psi(2S)$ and $J/\psi$ mesons times the ratio of their branching fractions into the dimuon final state is measured as a function of centrality using data collected by the LHCb detector in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV. Abstract: Predicting temporal progress from visual trajectories is important for intelligent robots that can learn, adapt, and improve. However, learning such progress estimator, or temporal value function, across different tasks and domains requires both a large amount of diverse data and methods which can scale and generalize. To address these challenges, we present Generative Value Learning (\GVL), a universal value function estimator that leverages the world knowledge embedded in vision-language models (VLMs) to predict task progress. Naively asking a VLM to predict values for a video sequence performs poorly due to the strong temporal correlation between successive frames. Instead, GVL poses value estimation as a temporal ordering problem over shuffled video frames; this seemingly more challenging task encourages VLMs to more fully exploit their underlying semantic and temporal grounding capabilities to differentiate frames based on their perceived task progress, consequently producing significantly better value predictions. Without any robot or task specific training, GVL can in-context zero-shot and few-shot predict effective values for more than 300 distinct real-world tasks across diverse robot platforms, including challenging bimanual manipulation tasks. Furthermore, we demonstrate that GVL permits flexible multi-modal in-context learning via examples from heterogeneous tasks and embodiments, such as human videos. 25. Stepping Forward on the Last Mile

Abstract: Continuously adapting pre-trained models to local data on resource constrained edge devices is the $\emph{last mile}$ for model deployment. However, as models increase in size and depth, backpropagation requires a large amount of memory, which becomes prohibitive for edge devices. In addition, most existing low power neural processing engines (e.g., NPUs, DSPs, MCUs, etc.) are designed as fixed-point inference accelerators, without training capabilities. Forward gradients, solely based on directional derivatives computed from two forward calls, have been recently used for model training, with substantial savings in computation and memory. However, the performance of quantized training with fixed-point forward gradients remains unclear. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of on-device training using fixed-point forward gradients, by conducting comprehensive experiments across a variety of deep learning benchmark tasks in both vision and audio domains. We propose a series of algorithm enhancements that further reduce the memory footprint, and the accuracy gap compared to backpropagation. An empirical study on how training with forward gradients navigates in the loss landscape is further explored. Our results demonstrate that on the last mile of model customization on edge devices, training with fixed-point forward gradients is a feasible and practical approach.

26. Polynomial Composition Activations: Unleashing the Dynamics of Large Language Models

Abstract: Transformers have found extensive applications across various domains due to the powerful fitting capabilities. This success can be partially attributed to their inherent nonlinearity. Thus, in addition to the ReLU function employed in the original transformer architecture, researchers have explored alternative modules such as GeLU and SwishGLU to enhance nonlinearity and thereby augment representational capacity. In this paper, we propose a novel category of polynomial composition activations (PolyCom), designed to optimize the dynamics of transformers. Theoretically, we provide a comprehensive mathematical analysis of PolyCom, highlighting its enhanced expressivity and efficacy relative to other activation functions. Notably, we demonstrate that networks incorporating PolyCom achieve the $\textbf{optimal approximation rate}$, indicating that PolyCom networks require minimal parameters to approximate general smooth functions in Sobolev spaces. We conduct empirical experiments on the pre-training configurations of large language models (LLMs), including both dense and sparse architectures. By substituting conventional activation functions with PolyCom, we enable LLMs to capture higher-order interactions within the data, thus improving performance metrics in terms of accuracy and convergence rates. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, showing substantial improvements over other activation functions. 27. Imagined Potential Games: A Framework for Simulating, Learning and Evaluating Interactive Behaviors

Abstract: Interacting with human agents in complex scenarios presents a significant challenge for robotic navigation, particularly in environments that necessitate both collision avoidance and collaborative interaction, such as indoor spaces. Unlike static or predictably moving obstacles, human behavior is inherently complex and unpredictable, stemming from dynamic interactions with other agents. Existing simulation tools frequently fail to adequately model such reactive and collaborative behaviors, impeding the development and evaluation of robust social navigation strategies. This paper introduces a novel framework utilizing distributed potential games to simulate human-like interactions in highly interactive scenarios. Within this framework, each agent imagines a virtual cooperative game with others based on its estimation. We demonstrate this formulation can facilitate the generation of diverse and realistic interaction patterns in a configurable manner across various scenarios. 28. GitChameleon: Unmasking the Version-Switching Capabilities of Code Generation Models

Abstract: The rapid evolution of software libraries presents a significant challenge for code generation models, which must adapt to frequent version updates while maintaining compatibility with previous versions. Existing code completion benchmarks often overlook this dynamic aspect, and the one that does consider it relies on static code prediction tasks without execution-based evaluation, offering a limited perspective on a model's practical usability. To address this gap, we introduce \textbf{\GitChameleon{}}, a novel, manually curated dataset comprising 116 Python code completion problems, each conditioned on specific library versions and accompanied by executable unit tests. \GitChameleon{} is designed to rigorously assess the ability of modern large language models (LLMs) to generate version-specific code that is not only syntactically correct but also functionally accurate upon execution. Our comprehensive evaluations reveal that state-of-the-art LLMs struggle with this task; for instance, \textbf{GPT-4o} achieves a pass@10 of only 39.9\% (43.7\% when provided with error feedback), highlighting the complexity of the problem and the limitations of current models. By providing an execution-based benchmark that emphasizes the dynamic nature of code libraries, \GitChameleon{} serves as a critical tool to advance the development of more adaptable and reliable code generation models. Abstract: An amplitude analysis of the $D_{s1}(2460)^+\to D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ transition is performed simultaneously in $B^{0}\to D^{-}D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$, $B^{+}\to{\bar{D}}^{0} D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$, and $B^{0}\to D^{*-}D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decays. The study is based on a data sample of proton-proton collisions recorded with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}=7,8,$ and $13\,$TeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of $9\,\rm{fb}^{-1}$. A clear double-peak structure is observed in the $m(\pi^{+}\pi^{-})$ spectrum of the $D_{s1}(2460)^{+}\to D_{s}^{+}\pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ decay. The data can be described either with a model including $f_0(500)$, $f_0(980)$ and $f_2(1270)$ resonances, in which the contributions of $f_0(980)$ and $f_2(1270)$ are unexpectedly large, or with a model including $f_0(500)$, a doubly charged open-charm tetraquark state $T_{c\bar{s}}^{++}$ and its isospin partner $T_{c\bar{s}}^{0}$. If the former is considered implausible, the $T_{c\bar{s}}$ states are observed with high significance, and the data are consistent with isospin symmetry. When imposing isospin constraints between the two $T_{c\bar{s}}$ states, their mass and width are determined to be $2327\pm13\pm13\,$MeV and $96\pm16\,^{+170}_{-23}\,$MeV, respectively, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. 30. Electron dynamics and particle transport in capacitively coupled Ar/O2 discharges driven by sawtooth up voltage waveforms

Abstract: One dimensional fluid/electron Monte Carlo simulations of capacitively coupled Ar/O2 discharges driven by sawtooth up voltage waveforms are performed as a function of the number of consecutive harmonics driving frequencies of 13.56 MHz, N (1-3), pressure (200-500 mTorr) and gas mixture (10-90 % admixture of O2 to Ar). The effects of these external parameters on the electron dynamics, and the transport of ions and neutrals are revealed at constant peak-to-peak driving voltage. The electronegativity is found to decline as the number of consecutive harmonics increases and the DC self-bias voltage decreases. Increasing the pressure also leads to a decrease in electronegativity. The combination of a decrease in the mean free path of electrons and the presence of the Electrical Asymmetry Effect (EAE) result in different spatio-temporal distributions of the ionization rate, which lead to a reduction in the amplitude of the DC self-bias at higher pressure. As the admixture of electronegative O2 increases, the electronegativity is enhanced, and the discharge mode changes from an {\alpha}-Drift Ambipolar (DA) hybrid to DA mode. This work focuses on linking these fundamental changes of the plasma physics induced by changing external parameters to process relevant charged particle and neutral fluxes to the electrodes. Particular attention is paid to O(1D) flux, because it is a precursor of deposition. In discharges driven by sawtooth up voltage waveforms, placing the substrate on the grounded electrode and increasing the number of consecutive harmonics, N, can facilitate the deposition process, since the O(1D) flux to the substrate is higher in these scenarios. Moreover, at an O2 admixture of 20%, the O(1D) flux is nearly as high as that at an O2 admixture of 90%, indicating that a higher O(1D) flux can be achieved without excessively increasing the O2 admixture., Comment: Ar/O2 gas discharges, electron dynamics, transport of charged and neutral particles, sawtooth up voltage waveforms

31. Segment Anything for Dendrites from Electron Microscopy

Abstract: Segmentation of cellular structures in electron microscopy (EM) images is fundamental to analyzing the morphology of neurons and glial cells in the healthy and diseased brain tissue. Current neuronal segmentation applications are based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and do not effectively capture global relationships within images. Here, we present DendriteSAM, a vision foundation model based on Segment Anything, for interactive and automatic segmentation of dendrites in EM images. The model is trained on high-resolution EM data from healthy rat hippocampus and is tested on diseased rat and human data. Our evaluation results demonstrate better mask quality compared to the original and other fine-tuned models, leveraging the features learned during training. This study introduces the first implementation of vision foundation models in dendrite segmentation, paving the path for computer-assisted diagnosis of neuronal anomalies.

Abstract: While 3D generative models have greatly improved artists' workflows, the existing diffusion models for 3D generation suffer from slow generation and poor generalization. To address this issue, we propose a two-stage approach named Hunyuan3D-1.0 including a lite version and a standard version, that both support text- and image-conditioned generation. In the first stage, we employ a multi-view diffusion model that efficiently generates multi-view RGB in approximately 4 seconds. These multi-view images capture rich details of the 3D asset from different viewpoints, relaxing the tasks from single-view to multi-view reconstruction. In the second stage, we introduce a feed-forward reconstruction model that rapidly and faithfully reconstructs the 3D asset given the generated multi-view images in approximately 7 seconds. The reconstruction network learns to handle noises and in-consistency introduced by the multi-view diffusion and leverages the available information from the condition image to efficiently recover the 3D structure. Our framework involves the text-to-image model, i.e., Hunyuan-DiT, making it a unified framework to support both text- and image-conditioned 3D generation. Our standard version has 3x more parameters than our lite and other existing model. 33. Impact of genetic polymorphisms on tacrolimus concentrations and intra-individual variability in recipients of heart transplants during the early post-heart transplantation period

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the effects of genetic polymorphisms on tacrolimus blood levels and intra-individual variability in recipients of heart transplants during the early post-transplantation period. Demographic information, concomitant medications, daily tacrolimus dose, trough concentration, and physiological and biochemical information of 87 Chinese recipients of heart transplants were collected. Trough concentrations were determined using a chemiluminescent micro-particle immunoassay, and 17 selected single nucleic acid polymorphisms were genotyped by direct sequencing. We assessed intra-individual variability by calculating the coefficient of variation of tacrolimus trough concentration and analyzed factors associated with tacrolimus concentration and intra-individual variability. Our study found that low body weight and a high percentage of neutrophils significantly influenced the coefficient of variation of tacrolimus. CYP3A5*1D and CYP3A7 rs776744 haplotypes correlated significantly with an intra-individual coefficient of variation of tacrolimus trough concentration during the early postoperative period. Patients with the CYP3A5*1D rs15524 and CYP3A7 rs776744 TT haplotype had a higher coefficient of variation than carriers of the C allele. Genetic polymorphisms in recipients of heart transplants affect tacrolimus metabolism, significantly affecting tacrolimus blood concentration during the early postoperative period. 34. Minder: Faulty Machine Detection for Large-scale Distributed Model Training

Abstract: Large-scale distributed model training requires simultaneous training on up to thousands of machines. Faulty machine detection is critical when an unexpected fault occurs in a machine. From our experience, a training task can encounter two faults per day on average, possibly leading to a halt for hours. To address the drawbacks of the time-consuming and labor-intensive manual scrutiny, we propose Minder, an automatic faulty machine detector for distributed training tasks. The key idea of Minder is to automatically and efficiently detect faulty distinctive monitoring metric patterns, which could last for a period before the entire training task comes to a halt. Minder has been deployed in our production environment for over one year, monitoring daily distributed training tasks where each involves up to thousands of machines. In our real-world fault detection scenarios, Minder can accurately and efficiently react to faults within 3.6 seconds on average, with a precision of 0.904 and F1-score of 0.893.

35. Detector integration at HEPS: a systematic, efficient and high-performance approach

Abstract: At least 25 kinds of detector-like devices need to be integrated in Phase I of the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS), and the work needs to be carefully planned to maximise productivity with highly limited human resources. After a systematic analysis on the actual work involved in detector integration, a separation of concerns between collaborating groups of personnel is established to minimise the duplication of efforts. To facilitate software development for detector integration, the ADGenICam library, which abstracts repeated code in EPICS modules for cameras, is extended to support a much wider range of detectors. An increasingly considerable fraction of detectors, both inside and outside HEPS, offer performance that exceed capabilities of the areaDetector framework in EPICS. Given this background, areaDetector's limitations in performance and architecture are analysed, and a QueueIOC -based framework that overcomes these limitations is introduced. A simple, flexible ZeroMQ-based protocol is used for data transport in this framework, while RDMA transport and multi-node readout will be explored for higher data throughputs. By calling C/C++ libraries from within Python, the performance of the former and the expressiveness of the latter can coexist nicely; the expressiveness allows for much higher efficiency in the implementation and use of integration modules functionally comparable to their EPICS counterparts., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The Water Cherenkov Detector Array (WCDA) is one of the components of Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO) and can monitor any sources over two-thirds of the sky for up to 7 hours per day with >98\% duty cycle. In this work, we report the detection of two outbursts of the Fanaroff-Riley I radio galaxy NGC 1275 that were detected by LHAASO-WCDA between November 2022 and January 2023 with statistical significance of 5.2~$\sigma$ and 8.3~$\sigma$. The observed spectral energy distribution in the range from 500 GeV to 3 TeV is fitted by a power-law with a best-fit spectral index of $\alpha=-3.37\pm0.52$ and $-3.35\pm0.29$, respectively. The outburst flux above 0.5~TeV was ($4.55\pm 4.21)\times~10^{-11}~\rm cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$ and ($3.45\pm 1.78)\times~10^{-11}~\rm cm^{-2}~s^{-1}$, corresponding to 60\%, 45\% of Crab Nebula flux. Variation analysis reveals the variability time-scale of days at the TeV energy band. Abstract: Miniaturized spectrometers for Raman spectroscopy have the potential to open up a new chapter in sensing. Raman spectroscopy is essential for material characterization and biomedical diagnostics, however, its weak signal and the need for sub-nanometer resolution pose challenges. Conventional spectrometers, with footprints proportional to optical throughput and resolution, are difficult to integrate into compact devices such as wearables. Waveguide-based Fourier Transform Spectrometers (FTS) enable compact spectrometers, and multi-aperture designs can achieve high throughput for applications such as Raman spectroscopy, however, experimental research in this domain remains limited. In this work, we present a multi-aperture SiN waveguide-based FTS overcoming these limitations and enabling Raman spectroscopy of isopropyl alcohol, glucose, Paracetamol, and Ibuprofen with enhanced throughput. Our spectrometer chip, fabricated on a 200 mm SiN wafer, with 160 edge-coupled waveguide apertures connected to an array of ultra-compact interferometers and a small footprint of just 1.6 mm x 4.8 mm, achieves a spectral range of 40 nm and a resolution of 0.5 nm. Experimental results demonstrate that least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression significantly enhances Raman spectrum reconstruction. Abstract: Coherent wave control is of key importance across a broad range of fields such as electromagnetics, photonics, and acoustics. It enables us to amplify or suppress the outgoing waves via engineering amplitudes and phases of multiple incidences. However, within a purely spatially (temporally) engineered medium, coherent wave control requires the frequency of the associated incidences to be identical (opposite). In this work, we break this conventional constraint by generalizing coherent wave control into a spatiotemporally engineered medium, i.e., the system featuring a dynamic interface. Owing to the broken translational symmetry in space and time, both the subluminal and superluminal interfaces allow interference between scattered waves regardless of their different frequencies and wavevectors. Hence, one can flexibly eliminate the backward- or forward-propagating waves scattered from the dynamic interfaces by controlling the incident amplitudes and phases. Our work not only presents a generalized way for reshaping arbitrary waveforms but also provides a promising paradigm to generate ultrafast pulses using low-frequency signals. We have also implemented suppression of forward-propagating waves in microstrip transmission lines with fast photodiode switches.

39. In-situ Self-optimization of Quantum Dot Emission for Lasers by Machine-Learning Assisted Epitaxy

Abstract: Traditional methods for optimizing light source emissions rely on a time-consuming trial-and-error approach. While in-situ optimization of light source gain media emission during growth is ideal, it has yet to be realized. In this work, we integrate in-situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) with machine learning (ML) to correlate the surface reconstruction with the photoluminescence (PL) of InAs/GaAs quantum dots (QDs), which serve as the active region of lasers. A lightweight ResNet-GLAM model is employed for the real-time processing of RHEED data as input, enabling effective identification of optical performance. This approach guides the dynamic optimization of growth parameters, allowing real-time feedback control to adjust the QDs emission for lasers. We successfully optimized InAs QDs on GaAs substrates, with a 3.2-fold increase in PL intensity and a reduction in full width at half maximum (FWHM) from 36.69 meV to 28.17 meV under initially suboptimal growth conditions. Our automated, in-situ self-optimized lasers with 5-layer InAs QDs achieved electrically pumped continuous-wave operation at 1240 nm with a low threshold current of 150 A/cm2 at room temperature, an excellent performance comparable to samples grown through traditional manual multi-parameter optimization methods. 40. Syno: Structured Synthesis for Neural Operators

Abstract: The desires for better prediction accuracy and higher execution performance in neural networks never end. Neural architecture search (NAS) and tensor compilers are two popular techniques to optimize these two goals, but they are both limited to composing or optimizing existing manually designed operators rather than coming up with completely new designs. In this work, we explore the less studied direction of neural operator synthesis, which aims to automatically and efficiently discover novel neural operators with better accuracy and/or speed. We develop an end-to-end framework Syno, to realize practical neural operator synthesis. Syno makes use of a novel set of fine-grained primitives defined on tensor dimensions, which ensure various desired properties to ease model training, and also enable expression canonicalization techniques to avoid redundant candidates during search. Syno further adopts a novel guided synthesis flow to obtain valid operators matched with the specified input/output dimension sizes, and leverages efficient stochastic tree search algorithms to quickly explore the design space. We demonstrate that Syno discovers better operators with an average of $2.06\times$ speedup and less than $1\%$ accuracy loss, even on NAS-optimized models.

41. The direct moving sphere for fractional Laplace equation

Abstract: This paper works on the direct method of moving spheres and establishes a Liouville-type theorem for the fractional elliptic equation \[ (-\Delta)^{\alpha/2} u =f(u) ~~~~~~ \text{in } \mathbb{R}^{n} \] with general non-linearity. One of the key improvement over the previous work is that we do not require the usual Lipschitz condition. In fact, we only assume the structural condition that $f(t) t^{- \frac{n+\alpha}{n-\alpha}}$ is monotonically decreasing. This differs from the usual approach such as Chen-Li-Li (Adv. Math. 2017), which needed the Lipschitz condition on $f$, or Chen-Li-Zhang (J. Funct. Anal. 2017), which relied on both the structural condition and the monotonicity of $f$. We also use the direct moving spheres method to give an alternative proof for the Liouville-type theorem of the fractional Lane-Emden equation in a half space. Similarly, our proof does not depend on the integral representation of solutions compared to existing ones. The methods developed here should also apply to problems involving more general non-local operators, especially if no equivalent integral equations exist.

42. Wormhole-induced effective coupling in SYK chains

Abstract: Inhomogeneous quantum chains have recently been considered in the context of developing novel discrete realizations of holographic dualities. To advance this programme, we explore the ground states of infinite chains with large number $N$ of Majorana fermions on each site, which interact via on-site $q$-body Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) couplings, as well as via additional inhomogeneous hopping terms between nearest-neighbour sites. The hopping parameters are either aperiodically or randomly distributed. Our approach unifies techniques to solve SYK-like models in the large $N$ limit with a real-space renormalization group method known as strong-disorder renormalization group (SDRG). We show that the SDRG decimation of SYK dots linked by a strong hopping induces an effective hopping interaction between their neighbouring sites. If two decimated sites are nearest neighbours, in the large $q$ limit their local ground states admit a holographic dual description in terms of eternal traversable wormholes. At the end of the SDRG procedure, we obtain a factorised ground state of the infinite inhomogeneous SYK chains that we consider, which has a spacetime description involving a sequence of wormholes. 43. Less is More: DocString Compression in Code Generation

Abstract: The widespread use of Large Language Models (LLMs) in software engineering has intensified the need for improved model and resource efficiency. In particular, for neural code generation, LLMs are used to translate function/method signature and DocString to executable code. DocStrings which capture user re quirements for the code and used as the prompt for LLMs, often contains redundant information. Recent advancements in prompt compression have shown promising results in Natural Language Processing (NLP), but their applicability to code generation remains uncertain. Our empirical study show that the state-of-the-art prompt compression methods achieve only about 10% reduction, as further reductions would cause significant performance degradation. In our study, we propose a novel compression method, ShortenDoc, dedicated to DocString compression for code generation. Our extensive experiments on six code generation datasets, five open-source LLMs (1B to 10B parameters), and one closed-source LLM GPT-4o confirm that ShortenDoc achieves 25-40% compression while preserving the quality of generated code, outperforming other baseline methods at similar compression levels. The benefit of this research is to improve efficiency and reduce the cost while maintaining the quality of the generated code, especially when calling third-party APIs, and is able to reduce the token processing cost by 25-40%., Comment: UNDER REVIEW

44. On a Special Metric in Cyclotomic Fields

Abstract: Let $p$ be an odd prime, and let $\omega$ be a primitive $p$th root of unity. In this paper, we introduce a metric on the cyclotomic field $K=\mathbb{Q}(\omega)$. We prove that this metric has several remarkable properties, such as invariance under the action of the Galois group. Furthermore, we show that points in the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$ behave in a highly uniform way under this metric. More specifically, we prove that for a certain hypercube in $\mathcal{O}_K$ centered at the origin, almost all pairs of points in the cube are almost equi-distanced from each other, when $p$ and $N$ are large enough. 45. Anomalous Non-Hermitian Skin Effects in Coupled Hermitian Chains with Cross-Coupling

Abstract: In this work, we demonstrate the presence of an anomalous non-Hermitian skin effects which decay from both ends of a system consisting of two coupled Hermitian chains induced by non-reciprocal inter-chain cross-coupling. Another intriguing feature of the system is that its eigenenergy spectrum in thermodynamic limit deviates from the generalized Brillouin zone (GBZ), contrary to that of conventional non-Hermitian systems. The thermodynamic-limit energy spectrum is however restored to the GBZ by the presence of even an infinitesimal amount of gain and/or loss term to the system. In this case, the system exhibits a critical phenomena similar to that of coupled non-Hermitian chains, whereby the eigenspectrum starts to approach the GBZ beyond some critical size. Furthermore, the non Hermitian skin effect becomes less pronounced as the system size exceeds this critical size. We analytically explain these peculiar features which highlight the important role of gain and loss terms as well as inter-chain coupling in tuning non-Hermitian skin modes, thus suggesting a new avenue for the modulation of the skin mode characteristics of open systems., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: Measurements of $CP$ observables and the CKM angle $\gamma$ are performed in $B^{\pm} \to D K^*(892)^{\pm}$ decays, where $D$ represents a superposition of $D^0$ and $\overline{D}{}^0$ states, using the LHCb dataset collected during Run 1 (2011-2012) and Run 2 (2015-2018). A comprehensive study of this channel is presented with the $D$ meson reconstructed in two-body final states $K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$, $K^+K^-$ and $\pi^+\pi^-$; four-body final states $K^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}\pi^{\pm}\pi^{\mp}$ and $\pi^+\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-$; and three-body final states $K^0_{S} \pi^+\pi^-$ and $K^0_{S} K^+ K^-$. This analysis includes the first observation of the suppressed $B^{\pm} \to [\pi^+K^-]_D K^{*\pm}$ and $B^{\pm} \to [\pi^+K^-\pi^+\pi^-]_D K^{*\pm}$ decays. 47. Effective Instruction Parsing Plugin for Complex Logical Query Answering on Knowledge Graphs

Abstract: Knowledge Graph Query Embedding (KGQE) aims to embed First-Order Logic (FOL) queries in a low-dimensional KG space for complex reasoning over incomplete KGs. To enhance the generalization of KGQE models, recent studies integrate various external information (such as entity types and relation context) to better capture the logical semantics of FOL queries. The whole process is commonly referred to as Query Pattern Learning (QPL). However, current QPL methods typically suffer from the pattern-entity alignment bias problem, leading to the learned defective query patterns limiting KGQE models' performance. To address this problem, we propose an effective Query Instruction Parsing Plugin (QIPP) that leverages the context awareness of Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) to capture latent query patterns from code-like query instructions. Unlike the external information introduced by previous QPL methods, we first propose code-like instructions to express FOL queries in an alternative format. This format utilizes textual variables and nested tuples to convey the logical semantics within FOL queries, serving as raw materials for a PLM-based instruction encoder to obtain complete query patterns. Building on this, we design a query-guided instruction decoder to adapt query patterns to KGQE models. To further enhance QIPP's effectiveness across various KGQE models, we propose a query pattern injection mechanism based on compressed optimization boundaries and an adaptive normalization component, allowing KGQE models to utilize query patterns more efficiently. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our plug-and-play method improves the performance of eight basic KGQE models and outperforms two state-of-the-art QPL methods.

48. Crystalline electric field excitations and their nonlinear splitting under magnetic fields in YbOCl

Abstract: Recently reported van der Waals layered honeycomb rare-earth chalcohalides REChX (RE = rare earth, Ch = chalcogen, and X = halogen) are considered to be promising Kitaev spin liquid (KSL) candidates. The high-quality single crystals of YbOCl, a representative member of the family with an effective spin of 1/2, are available now. The crystalline electric field (CEF) excitations in a rare-earth spin system are fundamentally important for understanding both finite-temperature and ground-state magnetism, but remain unexplored in YbOCl so far. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive Raman scattering study to unambiguously identify the CEF excitations in YbOCl and determine the CEF parameters and wave functions. Our Raman experiments further reveal the anomalous nonlinear CEF splitting under magnetic fields. We have grown single crystals of YbOCl, the nonmagnetic LuOCl, and the diluted magnetic Lu_{0.86}Yb_{0.14}OCl to make a completely comparative investigation. Polarized Raman spectra on the samples at 1.8 K allow us to clearly assign all the Raman-active phonon modes and explicitly identify the CEF excitations in YbOCl. The CEF excitations are further examined using temperature-dependent Raman measurements and careful symmetry analysis based on Raman tensors related to CEF excitations. By applying the CEF Hamiltonian to the experimentally determined CEF excitations, we extract the CEF parameters and eventually determine the CEF wave functions. The study experimentally pins down the CEF excitations in the Kitaev compound YbOCl and sets a foundation for understanding its finite-temperature magnetism and exploring the possible nontrivial spin ground state., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

49. HardRace: A Dynamic Data Race Monitor for Production Use

Abstract: Data races are critical issues in multithreaded program, leading to unpredictable, catastrophic and difficult-to-diagnose problems. Despite the extensive in-house testing, data races often escape to deployed software and manifest in production runs. Existing approaches suffer from either prohibitively high runtime overhead or incomplete detection capability. In this paper, we introduce HardRace, a data race monitor to detect races on-the-fly while with sufficiently low runtime overhead and high detection capability. HardRace firstly employs sound static analysis to determine a minimal set of essential memory accesses relevant to data races. It then leverages hardware trace instruction, i.e., Intel PTWRITE, to selectively record only these memory accesses and thread synchronization events during execution with negligible runtime overhead. Given the tracing data, HardRace performs standard data race detection algorithms to timely report potential races occurred in production runs. The experimental evaluations show that HardRace outperforms state-of-the-art tools like ProRace and Kard in terms of both runtime overhead and detection capability -- HardRace can detect all kinds of data races in read-world applications while maintaining a negligible overhead, less than 2% on average.

Abstract: This paper presents the first measurement of $\psi{(2S)}$ and $\chi_{c1}(3872)$ meson production within fully reconstructed jets. Each quarkonium state (tag) is reconstructed via its decay to the $J/\psi$($\rightarrow\mu^+\mu^-$)$\pi^+\pi^-$ final state in the forward region using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at the center-of-mass-energy of $13 \text{TeV}$ in 2016, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.64 \text{fb}^{-1}$. The fragmentation function, presented as the ratio of the quarkonium-tag transverse momentum to the full jet transverse momentum ($p_{\mathrm{T}}(\text{tag})/p_{\mathrm{T}}(\text{jet})$), is measured differentially in $p_{\mathrm{T}}(\text{jet})$ and $p_{\mathrm{T}}(\text{tag})$ bins. The distributions are separated into promptly produced quarkonia from proton-proton collisions and quarkonia produced from displaced $b$-hadron decays.
