Detailed understanding to the evolution of Neogene land mammals in East Asia and its intercontinental correlation has been impeded by the absence of an integrated biochronological system of this region. The numerous and diverse records of Neogene vertebrate fossils preserved in Inner Mongolia of northern China play a key role in the establishment of an independent biochronological framework in East Asia. However, most of these faunas are poorly constrained by independent chronological controls due to the scattered distribution of fossil localities and insufficient exposure of the fossiliferous strata. Additionally, age estimates by mammalian evolution and correlation often have uncertainties greater than ~1–2 million years. Here we present new magnetostratigraphic results of the Baogeda Ula Fauna, which was generally assigned an early Baodean Age (Late Miocene), or equivalent to the European MN12 zone (middle Turolian). Hipparion remains and associated vertebrate fossils were excavated from the upper part of the fluvio-lacustrine Baogeda Ula Formation near Abaga Banner, central Inner Mongolia of northern China. At least two layers of basalt sheet flows can be observed on top of the Baogeda Ula Formation. Our magnetostratigraphy, aided by published biochronology data and K–Ar ages of the lower basalt layer suggests that the Baogeda Ula Fauna consisting of three fossiliferous horizons can be placed within chron C4n.1n with an age range of 7.642–7.528 Ma. Thus, the Baogeda Ula Fauna becomes the first and only Baodean assemblage that is constrained by both magnetostratigraphy and radiometric ages, offering an anchoring point for future biochronological correlations.

Microbes that synthesize minerals, a process known as microbial biomineralization, contributed substantially to the evolution of current planetary environments through numerous important geochemical processes. Despite its geological significance, the origin and evolution of microbial biomineralization remain poorly understood. Through combined metagenomic and phylogenetic analyses of deep-branching magnetotactic bacteria from the Nitrospirae phylum, and using a Bayesian molecular clock-dating method, we show here that the gene cluster responsible for biomineralization of magnetosomes, and the arrangement of magnetosome chain(s) within cells, both originated before or near the Archean divergence between the Nitrospirae and Proteobacteria This phylogenetic divergence occurred well before the Great Oxygenation Event. Magnetotaxis likely evolved due to environmental pressures conferring an evolutionary advantage to navigation via the geomagnetic field. Earth's dynamo must therefore have been sufficiently strong to sustain microbial magnetotaxis in the Archean, suggesting that magnetotaxis coevolved with the geodynamo over geological time.

Variations of the Earth's geomagnetic field during the Holocene are important for understanding centennial to millennial-scale processes of the Earth's deep interior and have enormous potential implications for chronological correlations (e.g., comparisons between different sedimentary recording sequences, archaeomagnetic dating). Here, we present 21 robust archaeointensity data points from eastern China spanning the past ∼6 kyr. These results add significantly to the published data both regionally and globally. Taking together, we establish an archaeointensity reference curve for Eastern Asia, which can be used for archaeomagnetic dating in this region. Virtual axial dipole moments (VADMs) of the data range from a Holocene-wide low of ∼27 to "spike" values of ∼166 ZAm2 (Z: 1021). The results, in conjunction with our recently published data, confirm the existence of a decrease in paleointensity (DIP) in China around ∼2200 BCE. These low intensities are the lowest ever found for the Holocene and have not been reported outside of China. We also report a spike intensity of 165.8 ± 6.0 ZAm2 at ∼1300 BCE (±300 y), which is either a prelude to or the same event (within age uncertainties) as spikes first reported in the Levant.

The Jianbeigou gold deposit is a typical lode gold deposit in the Qinling metallogenic belt, located on the southern margin of the North China Craton. Three stages of the hydrothermal process can be distinguished, including the quartz ± pyrite, quartz‐polymetallic sulfide, and quartz‐carbonate ± pyrite stages. From the early to late stages, the homogenization temperatures of primary fluid inclusions are 281–362°C, 227–331°C, and 149–261°C, respectively. The corresponding salinities estimated for these fluids are 3.9–9.9 wt%, 0.4–9.4 wt%, and 0.7–7.2 wt% NaCl equiv. Combined with laser Raman spectroscopy data, the ore‐forming fluid belongs to a H2O‐CO2‐NaCl ± CH4 system with medium–low temperature and salinity. The δ18Ofluid and δD values for the quartz veins are –1.0‰ to 6.0‰ and –105‰ to –84‰, respectively, which indicates that the ore‐forming fluid is of mixed source, mainly derived from magma, with a contribution from meteoric water. Pyrite has been identified into three generations based on mineral paragenetic sequencing, including Py1, Py2, and Py3. The pyrites have δ34S sulfur isotopic compositions from three stages between 3.7‰ and 8.4‰, indicating that sulfur mainly originated from magma. Te, Bi, Sb, and Cu contents in pyrite were all high and showed a strong correlation with Au concentrations. Native gold and the Au‐Ag‐Bi telluride minerals were formed concurrently, and the As concentration was low and decoupled from the Au content. Therefore, Te, Bi, Sb and other low‐melting point chalcophile elements play an important role for gold mineralization in arsenic‐deficient ore‐forming fluid. Combined with the geological setting, evolution of pyrite, and ore‐fluids geochemistry, we propose that the Jianbeigou deposit can be classified as a magmatic–hydrothermal lode gold deposit. Paleointensity records are vital for understanding the Earth's evolution, but obtaining accurate paleointensity is a challenging task. The Shaw‐type method, a widely‐used paleointensity protocol, produces biased results occasionally despite strict selection criteria. By examining the relationships between paleointensities and rock magnetic parameters from a pseudo‐Tsunakawa‐Shaw experiment, we ascertain that changes in the ratio of thermal to anhysteretic remanent magnetization (R) are proportional to bias in paleointensity, especially prominent in samples with hundred‐nanometer‐scale magnetic grains, and thus proved to be the culprit for the bias. Furthermore, we develop a method exploiting the Linear regression of R with Diverse cut‐off coercivity intervals for estimating Shaw‐type paleointensities (LoRD‐Shaw). Combined with a curve fit technique for samples with "folding" phenomenon, the LoRD‐Shaw method yields high‐accuracy results in all tested samples, demonstrating its efficiency in mitigating paleointensity bias from thermal alteration. The new method will enhance acquisition of high‐precision paleointensities for constraining the geodynamo evolution. Plain Language Summary: Precise retrieval of ancient geomagnetic field strength is instrumental in elucidating the evolutionary history of the Earth's interior. Nevertheless, various paleointensity protocols including the widely used Shaw‐type method are struggling to get enough authentic data to satisfy the demand for clarifying crucial questions such as the solidification time of the Earth's inner core and interactions between different geospheres. Here, we figure out the culprit of biased results derived from Shaw‐series protocols and propose a new calculation method (LoRD‐Shaw) to solve the problem. The LoRD‐Shaw method achieves accurate results in both laboratory‐tested and modern volcanic samples with a high success rate, which will promote the acquisition of abundant high‐precision paleointensities for geomagnetic study, and thus contribute to the geoscience community.
