Cloud microphysical processes, such as droplet activation, condensational growth, and collisional growth, play a central role in the evolution of clouds and precipitation. Accurate representations of these processes in numerical models are challenging partially due to incomplete understanding of them at the process level arising from limited systematic observations. Most surface-based active remote sensors, including today's operational cloud radars and lidars, have a resolution on the order of tens of meters. This resolution is insufficient to resolve cloud microphysical processes that manifest at finer (meter and submeter) scales. A new set of ultra-high-resolution ground-based radar and lidar systems have been developed to address this observational gap. The newly developed 94-GHz cloud radar has a range resolution down to 2.8 m, or a factor of 10 finer than typical radars, using a large bandwidth and quadratic phase coding techniques. The lidar has a range resolution down to 10 cm, or a factor of 100 finer than typical lidars, using a time-gated time-correlated single-photon-counting technique. Such high-resolution observations were previously only achievable through in situ aircraft measurements. Even then, aircraft measurements do not permit continuous long-term cloud observation as is possible with ground-based remote sensing instruments. In this study, the first-light cloud observations from the new radar and lidar systems are shown to reveal detailed cloud structures that conventional sensors could only perceive in a bulk sense, thus providing new avenues to investigate cloud microphysical processes and their impact on weather and climate. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: In this study, we introduced two novel remote sensing instruments capable of high-resolution cloud observations: a cloud radar system with a range resolution down to 2.8 m and a lidar system with a range resolution down to 10 cm. Observations show that the radar and lidar systems resolve detailed cloud structures and microphysical processes which would not be obtained from traditional remote sensing systems. Dust and high cloud interactions are critical for climate change, primarily due to the dominant roles of high cloud in the greenhouse effect and the continental precipitation. Nonetheless, disentangling the specific impacts of dust from the overlying meteorology influence on high clouds presents great challenges. In this study, we construct a meteorological pattern that successfully reveal the intricate connection between high cloud distribution and atmospheric conditions. Through this strong bounded relationship, we find that dust exhibits notable controls over the facilitation or inhibition of ice particle growth contingent upon the prevailing meteorological fields. More dust can increase precipitation rate and shorten high cloud lifetime particularly under favorable meteorology. These findings underscore the crucial role of dust concentration in mitigating global warming for future climate change. Plain Language Summary: Dust particles in the atmosphere play a crucial role in the formation and dissipation of high clouds, which can significantly impact global climate and weather patterns. By analyzing satellite observations and climate model data, we discovered that dust can either enhance or suppress the growth of ice crystals, depending on the atmospheric conditions. In moist environments with favorable weather, increased dust leads to larger ice crystals and more precipitation, accelerating the life cycle of high clouds. Conversely, in dry conditions with unfavorable weather, excessive dust competes for limited moisture, resulting in smaller ice crystals, although it can still increase rainfall during the dissipation stage of high clouds. As climate change progresses and dust storms become more frequent, the increased presence of dust in the atmosphere may lead to more extreme weather events and potentially mitigate some of the warming effects caused by high clouds. Understanding these complex interactions between dust, high clouds, and weather conditions is essential for improving climate models and predicting future changes in Earth's water cycle and energy balance. A THz radar, with its wide bandwidth, is capable of high‐resolution imaging down to the centimeter scale. In this study, a THz radar is applied to detect hydrometeors generated in a spray chamber. The observed backscattering signals show fluctuations at centimeter scales, indicating various hydrometeor distribution patterns along the radar beam. A co‐located High‐Speed Imaging (HSI) sensor is used to measure the Drop Size Distributions (DSD) in the spray chamber. The radar sampling beam is well aligned with the HSI probes, allowing an objective comparison between the remote sensing and in situ observations. In this study, the observed radar power is compared with the power estimated from the HSI measurements. Results show great consistency, with power difference smaller than 0.5 dB. This study demonstrates the feasibility and great potential of using a THz radar for ultra‐high‐resolution observations of clouds in a laboratory facility, and in the real atmosphere. Results show that the THz radar measurements agree well with the radar power calculated from the in situ observations. This unique experiment indicates promising scenarios of applying THz radar to cloud and precipitation studies in a laboratory facility and in the real atmosphere.
