BackgroundEnamel is highly transparent at short wavelength infrared imaging (SWIR) wavelengths allowing the detection of dental decay without the need for ionizing radiation. The purpose of this study was to use SWIR imaging methods including cross polarization optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT), occlusal transillumination (SWIR-OT), proximal transillumination (SWIR-PT), and occlusal reflectance (SWIR-R) to image interproximal lesions in vivo and compare the sensitivity with radiography.MethodsParticipants (n = 30) aged 18-80 each with a radiopositive interproximal lesion scheduled for restoration were enrolled in the study. Studies have shown that the opposing proximal surfaces across the contact will likely also have lesions. SWIR images were acquired of the adjoining teeth at each contact with an interproximal lesion scheduled for restoration. Lesion presence and depth were assessed on each side of the contact for radiography and each SWIR imaging method. Stains produced by bacteria or those found in blood and food byproducts accumulate in highly porous caries lesions. They can interfere with accurate diagnosis and the selective removal of carious tissue during cavity preparations. Short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) imaging studies have shown that stain molecules do not absorb light beyond 1200 nm. The objective of this study was to image affected and infected dentin atSWIR wavelengths. Sections of 3 mm thickness were cut from the extracted teeth with deep dentinal lesions. The sound (normal), affected (stained), and infected (demineralized) dentin on each section were examined with reflected light at wavelengths from 400 to 1700 nm, red and green fluorescence, and with optical coherence tomography (OCT). Microcomputed tomography (microCT) was used to measure the mineral density at each location investigated. Significant (p < 0.05) differences were observed in the reflected light intensity at 400-850 nm and for fluorescence between the sound, affected, and infected dentin. SWIR imaging did not show significant reductions in reflectivity for the affected and infected dentin. SWIR images may be valuable for monitoring the lateral spread of dentinal lesions on the occlusal surfaces of teeth.

Significance: Leakage in the interfaces between restorative materials and tooth structure allows for fluid and bacterial acid infiltration, causing restoration failure due to secondary caries. Dentists spend more time replacing composite restorations than placing new ones. Previous in vitro and in vivo studies on enamel and root surfaces using shortwave-infrared (SWIR) and thermal imaging during dehydration with forced air have been promising for assessing lesion activity. Aim: We hypothesized that SWIR reflectance and thermal imaging methods can be used to monitor the activity of secondary caries lesions around composite restorations. The objective of this study was to employ these methods to measure the rate of fluid loss from lesions during dehydration with forced air to assess lesion activity. Approach: Sixty-three extracted human teeth with total of 109 suspected secondary lesions were examined using SWIR and thermal imaging during dehydration. The thickness of the highly mineralized transparent surface layer (TSL) at lesion interfaces indicative of lesion activity was measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT). Micro-computed tomography (MicroCT) was used to further confirm lesion severity and structure. OCT and MicroCT measurements of lesion structure, depth, and severity were correlated with fluid loss rates measured with SWIR reflectance and thermal imaging. Results: TSL thickness measured with OCT correlated with both SWIR reflectance and thermal measurements of rates of fluid loss ( p < 0.05 ). Increasing TSL thickness led to decreased permeability of lesions, potentially indicating full lesion arrest at TSL ≥ 70    μ m . SWIR performed better than thermal imaging for secondary lesion activity assessment, although both methods performed best on smooth surface lesions. Conclusions: Nondestructive SWIR reflectance and OCT imaging methods are promising for clinically monitoring the activity of secondary caries lesions.

ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to use cross polarization optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT) and short wavelength infrared imaging (SWIR) reflectance imaging to monitor changes in the structure and activity of early occlusal caries on primary teeth over a period of 6 months during intervention with fluoride.MethodsParticipants (n = 29) aged 6-10 each with two suspected active occlusal lesions on primary teeth completed the study. Fluoride varnish was applied to tooth surfaces every 3-months and participants were instructed to brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste. Images were acquired using CP-OCT every 3 months for 6 months. SWIR reflectance images were acquired during forced air-drying of the lesions for 30 s at 0 and 6-months.ResultsMost of the 42 lesions appeared initially active at baseline. With the intelligent development of power systems, the number of relays continues to increase. Differences in manufacturers, systems, and protocols lead to growing security risks. Tampering with relay settings could potentially cause power outages or even system instability. Consequently, relay settings have gradually become a key target for cyberattacks, particularly in smart grids where traditional defense measures struggle to effectively address complex and diverse attack scenarios. To address this issue, this paper proposes a three-layer optimization defense model based on game theory, designed to adapt to various attack scenarios. The core methodology of this model includes a three-layer structure: The first layer optimizes the protection level of each relay by allocating limited defense budgets. The second layer analyzes the potential system damage based on the attacker’s strategy choices. The third layer comprehensively calculates system losses to evaluate the effectiveness of defense plans. Through layer-by-layer optimization of budget allocation, the model minimizes the unsupplied energy loss caused by relay setting attacks. Compared to existing methods, this model not only improves defense effectiveness under resource constraints but also addresses multiple complex attack scenarios. Experimental results demonstrate that this model significantly enhances the system’s defense capabilities and effectively reduces the impact of attacks on system security operations.

The aim of this clinical study was to compare the diagnostic performance of dual short wavelength infrared (SWIR) occlusal transillumination and reflectance multispectral imaging with conventional visual assessment and radiography for caries detection on premolars scheduled for extraction for orthodontics reasons. Polarized light microscopy (PLM) and micro-computed tomography (microCT) performed after tooth extraction were used as gold standards. The custom-fabricated imaging probe was 3D-printed and the imaging system employed a SWIR camera and fiber-optic light sources emitting light at 1300 nm for occlusal transillumination and 1600 nm for reflectance measurements. Teeth (n = 135) on 40 test subjects were imaged in vivo using the SWIR imaging prototype in the study and teeth were extracted after imaging. Our study demonstrates for the first time that near-simultaneous real-time transillumination and reflectance video can be successfully acquired for caries detection. Both SWIR imaging modalities had markedly higher sensitivity for lesions on proximal and occlusal surfaces compared to conventional methods (visual and radiographic). Reflectance imaging at 1600 nm had higher sensitivity and specificity than transillumination at 1300 nm. The combined SWIR methods yielded higher specificity but the combined sensitivity was lower than for each individual method.

The active surveillance of root caries lesions to monitor potential remineralization or decay progression is challenging for the clinician, due to unreliable diagnostic information. The conventional visual and tactile methods for assessing the lesion activity are not reliable, and the clinician is often unable to determine if the lesion is progressing or has been arrested. An important marker of an arrested lesion is a highly mineralized transparent surface zone (TSL) that forms when the mineral is deposited in the outer layer of the lesion. The purpose of this study was to determine if cross-polarization optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT) could be used to detect changes in the lesion severity and activity during active monitoring. In total, 18 subjects with 22 suspected active root caries lesions were evaluated using CP-OCT at the baseline, 3 months, and 6 months. All subjects were instructed to use a high fluoride dentifrice at the baseline. The results showed that CP-OCT was able to discriminate the active from the arrested lesions by identifying the presence of a TSL on arrested lesions. The results also indicated that the mean TSL thickness increased significantly (p < 0.05) for the nine lesion areas. In addition, CP-OCT was able to show the progression of demineralization, erosion, and changes in gingival contours in scanned areas. CP-OCT was valuable for monitoring the activity and severity of root caries lesions in vivo. CP-OCT can be used to assess the activity of root caries lesions at a single time point by detecting the presence of a TSL at the lesion surface indicative of the lesion arrest.

AIM: To investigate the application of biological amniotic membrane soaked in pirfenidone(PFD)and to evaluate its anti-scarring effect and toxic side effects on glaucoma model of rabbit eyes.METHODS: The right eyes of 72 healthy New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into 0.5%PFD+ biological amniotic membrane group, biological amniotic membrane group, mitomycin C(MMC)group and blank control group after the glaucoma model was established by anterior chamber injection of compound carbomer solution, and 18 rabbits in each group underwent trabeculectomy, in which the 0.5% PFD+ biological amniotic membrane group was placed with 0.5% PFD solution-soaked biological amniotic membrane under the scleral flap, and the biological amniotic membrane group was placed with normal saline-soaked rehydrated biological amniotic membrane under the scleral flap. In the MMC group, a cotton pad soaked in MMC was placed under the scleral flap for 3 min and immediately rinsed with normal saline, while the blank control group received no implant after the scleral flap was made. We have developed a clinical probe capable of acquiring simultaneous, multispectral short wavelength infrared (SWIR) reflectance and occlusal transillumination images of lesions on tooth proximal and occlusal surfaces to reduce the potential of false positives and enhance diagnosis. The dual probe was 3D printed and the imaging system uses an InGaAs camera and broadband light sources at 1310 nm for occlusal transillumination and 1600 nm for cross-polarization reflectance measurements. In this study a mathematical model to estimate the penetration depth of "hidden" occlusal lesions from the SWIR images was developed. We compared the model's estimated lesion depth on 18 extracted teeth with lesions against microCT measurements. Although the model estimated depth deviates from that measured in microCT at higher depths, there is a good linear correlation (R2 = 0.93) between the estimated depth from SWIR images and the measured depth using microCT. SWIR occlusal transillumination images at 1300 nm also provide information about interproximal lesion penetration depth which can be directly viewed from the occlusal surface. SWIR occlusal transillumination and reflectance depth measurements on 49 natural interproximal lesions were compared with microCT measurements. There was significant correlation between the depths measured with SWIR occlusal transillumination (R2 = 0.81) and reflectance (R2 = 0.19) compared with the depths measured with microCT.

The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic performance of dual short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) transillumination and reflectance multispectral imaging devices for imaging interproximal lesions with radiography using extracted teeth that had been imaged with micro-computed tomography (microCT). Thirty-six extracted teeth with 67 lesions on the proximal surfaces were imaged using a newly fabricated SWIR multispectral proximal transillumination and reflectance imaging device along with an existing SWIR multispectral occlusal transillumination and reflectance device. The ability of SWIR imaging and radiography to detect lesions and accurately assess lesion dimensions were compared using microCT as a standard. Occlusal and proximal transillumination and occlusal reflectance performed best for imaging interproximal lesions while proximal reflectance was not useful for imaging interproximal lesions from tooth buccal and lingual surfaces. There was high correlation of the lesion dimensions measured in occlusal and proximal transillumination images compared to microCT and moderate correlation in occlusal reflectance images. The correlation between the lesion depth measured in radiographs and the lesion depth measured with microCT was not significant. This study demonstrates that SWIR occlusal and proximal transillumination and SWIR occlusal reflectance images are useful for imaging interproximal lesions and they provide more accurate measurements of lesion severity.

We have developed a clinical probe capable of acquiring simultaneous short wavelength infrared (SWIR) cross-polarized reflectance and occlusal transillumination images of lesions on tooth proximal and occlusal surfaces. We hypothesize that the dual SWIR reflectance and transillumination probe will improve the diagnostic accuracy of the device by reducing false positives since it is unlikely that confounding structural features or specular reflection are going to be present in both reflectance and transillumination images. In addition, the dual probe will provide complementary diagnostic information about lesion severity to help discriminate early superficial lesions on tooth surfaces from deeply penetrating lesions. The dual probe was 3D printed and equipped with a compact InGaAs camera and broadband superluminescent diode light sources that emit broadband light at 1300 nm for occlusal transillumination and 1600 nm light for cross-polarization reflectance measurements. The first clinical images acquired using this novel probe are presented.

SignificanceWe have developed a clinical probe capable of acquiring near-simultaneous short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) reflectance and occlusal transillumination images of lesions on tooth proximal and occlusal surfaces. We hypothesize that dual images will aid in differentiating between shallow and deep occlusal lesions and reduce the potential of false positives (FPs).AimThe aim of this study was to test the performance of the dual reflectance and occlusal transillumination probe on extracted teeth prior to commencing clinical studies.ApproachThe dual probe was 3D printed and the imaging system uses an InGaAs camera and broadband superluminescent diode light sources that emit broadband light at 1300 nm for occlusal transillumination and 1600-nm light for cross-polarization reflectance. The diagnostic performance of the dual probe was assessed using 120 extracted teeth with approximal and occlusal lesions. Reflectance and transillumination images were fused into single images to enhance the contrast between sound and lesion areas. The lesion contrast in both modes did not increase significantly with either the lesion depth or the distance from the occlusal surface for approximal lesions. In addition, the diagnostic performance of radiography, the individual reflectance and transillumination images, dual images, and fused images were compared using micro-computed tomography as the gold standard.ResultsReflectance imaging at 1600 nm yielded the highest diagnostic accuracy for lesions on both occlusal and proximal surfaces while radiography yielded the lowest number of FPs.ConclusionThis study demonstrates that simultaneous acquisition of both reflectance and transillumination SWIR images is possible with a single clinical device.

New imaging technologies are needed for the clinical assessment of lesions on root surfaces. It is not sufficient to simply detect caries lesions; methods are needed to assess lesion depth, structural composition and activity to determine if chemical intervention has the potential to be effective and if remineralization has occurred. Lesions were monitored using CP-OCT during lesion dehydration to assess the lesion structure and any shrinkage. Thermal imaging at 6-10 μm wavelengths and short wavelength-IR imaging at 1450-1750-nm were used to monitor thermal emission during lesion dehydration to assess lesion activity. Imaging probes were custom fabricated for clinical use. We present the first clinical results of a small feasibility study employing CP-OCT, thermal and SWIR imaging to assess lesion activity in vivo on thirty test subjects with suspected root caries lesions.

BackgroundTotal skin electron therapy (TSET) utilizes high-energy electrons to treat malignancies on the entire body surface. The otherwise invisible radiation beam can be observed via the optical Cherenkov photons emitted from interactions between the high-energy electron beam and tissue.Methods and materialsWith a time-gated intensified camera system, the Cherenkov emission can be used to evaluate the dose uniformity on the surface of the patient in real time. Fifteen patients undergoing TSET in various conditions (whole body and half body) were imaged and analyzed. Each patient was monitored during TSET via in vivo detectors (IVD) in nine locations. For accurate Cherenkov imaging, a comparison between IVD and Cherenkov profiles was conducted using a polyvinyl chloride board to establish the perspective corrections.Results and discussionWith proper corrections developed in this study including the perspective and inverse square corrections, the Cherenkov imaging provided two-dimensional maps proportional to dose and projected on patient skin. The results of ratio between chest and umbilicus points were in good agreement with in vivo point dose measurements, with a standard deviation of 2.4% compared to OSLD measurements.ConclusionsCherenkov imaging is a viable tool for validating patient-specific dose distributions during TSET.

This study offers a modular isolated grid-connected DC/DC medium-voltage DC aggregation converter to support offshore full DC wind farms' need for lightweight and highly efficient power aggregation and transmission. The converter can simultaneously have a smaller transformer size and lower switching frequency during operation through the dual-voltage stabilization three-loop control strategy and phase-shift modulation strategy, which greatly reduces the space occupied by the converter and lowers the switching loss, Additionally, the use of a two-level structure at a lower switching frequency has lower loss, which effectively reduces the cost of the power device compared with the commonly used three-level converter. The input series output series connection between the converter sub-modules effectively lowers the voltage stress on each power switching device and facilitates expansion into a multi-module structure, expanding its application in high-voltage and large-capacity environments. This study analyzes the two working modes of the DC/DC converter and its control approach, in addition to providing a detailed introduction to the application scenarios of this converter. The electrochemical reduction of nitrates (NO3RR) for ammonia synthesis at room temperature holds immense potential. One key challenge is the adsorption and activation of NO3−, along with the provision of sufficient active hydrogen to accelerate the hydrogenation process. Here, the study prepares N‐doped TiO2‐x supported by Zr single atoms (Zr‐TiON) with rich oxygen vacancies (Ov), in which unsaturated Zr (Lewis acidic, LA) sites together with oxygen atoms around Ov (Lewis base, LB) form frustrated Lewis acid‐base pairs (FLPs). At −60 mA cm−2, NH3 Faradaic efficiency reaches 94.8%, corresponding to the production rate of 663.15 µmol h−1 mgcat−1. The yield rate is up to 26.16 mmol h−1mgcat−1 at −1 A cm−2 in flowing electrolyzer. Theoretical calculations and in situ spectroscopy analysis reveal that the interaction between LA and LB sites in FLPs plays a crucial role in facilitating adsorption and activation of electron‐rich NO3− and electron‐deficient *H. The presence of enhanced FLPs significantly reduces the energy barrier for H2O dissociation, lowering it to 0.20 eV, which facilitates subsequent hydrogenation reactions. The abundance of *H accelerates hydrogenation process, thereby enhancing the activity of NO3RR.
