Accurately measuring magnetic field strength in the interstellar medium, including giant molecular clouds (GMCs), remains a significant challenge. We present a machine learning approach using Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DDPMs) to estimate magnetic field strength from synthetic observables such as column density, dust continuum polarization vector orientation angles, and line-of-sight (LOS) nonthermal velocity dispersion. We trained three versions of the DDPM model: the 1-channel DDPM (using only column density), the 2-channel DDPM (incorporating both column density and polarization angles), and the 3-channel DDPM (which combines column density, polarization angles, and LOS nonthermal velocity dispersion). We assessed the models on both synthetic test samples and new simulation data that were outside the training set's distribution. The 3-channel DDPM consistently outperformed both the other DDPM variants and the power-law fitting approach based on column density alone, demonstrating its robustness in handling previously unseen data. Additionally, we compared the performance of the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi (DCF) methods, both classical and modified, to the DDPM predictions. The classical DCF method overestimated the magnetic field strength by approximately an order of magnitude. Court efficiency is vital for social stability. However, in most countries around the world, the grassroots courts face case backlogs, with decisions relying heavily on judicial personnel's cognitive labor, lacking intelligent tools to improve efficiency. To address this issue, we propose an efficient law article recommendation approach utilizing a Knowledge Graph (KG) and a Large Language Model (LLM). Firstly, we propose a Case-Enhanced Law Article Knowledge Graph (CLAKG) as a database to store current law statutes, historical case information, and correspondence between law articles and historical cases. Additionally, we introduce an automated CLAKG construction method based on LLM. On this basis, we propose a closed-loop law article recommendation method. Finally, through a series of experiments using judgment documents from the website "China Judgements Online", we have improved the accuracy of law article recommendation in cases from 0.549 to 0.694, demonstrating that our proposed method significantly outperforms baseline approaches.

Automatic Modulation Classification (AMC), as a crucial technique in modern non-cooperative communication networks, plays a key role in various civil and military applications. However, existing AMC methods usually are complicated and can work in batch mode only due to their high computational complexity. This paper introduces a new online AMC scheme based on Isolation Distributional Kernel. Our method stands out in two aspects. Firstly, it is the first proposal to represent baseband signals using a distributional kernel. Secondly, it introduces a pioneering AMC technique that works well in online settings under realistic time-varying channel conditions. Through extensive experiments in online settings, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed classifier. Our results indicate that the proposed approach outperforms existing baseline models, including two state-of-the-art deep learning classifiers. Moreover, it distinguishes itself as the first online classifier for AMC with linear time complexity, which marks a significant efficiency boost for real-time applications.

Recent advancements in industrial anomaly detection have been hindered by the lack of realistic datasets that accurately represent real-world conditions. Existing algorithms are often developed and evaluated using idealized datasets, which deviate significantly from real-life scenarios characterized by environmental noise and data corruption such as fluctuating lighting conditions, variable object poses, and unstable camera positions. To address this gap, we introduce the Realistic Anomaly Detection (RAD) dataset, the first multi-view RGB-based anomaly detection dataset specifically collected using a real robot arm, providing unique and realistic data scenarios. RAD comprises 4765 images across 13 categories and 4 defect types, collected from more than 50 viewpoints, providing a comprehensive and realistic benchmark. This multi-viewpoint setup mirrors real-world conditions where anomalies may not be detectable from every perspective. Moreover, by sampling varying numbers of views, the algorithm's performance can be comprehensively evaluated across different viewpoints. This approach enhances the thoroughness of performance assessment and helps improve the algorithm's robustness. Besides, to support 3D multi-view reconstruction algorithms, we propose a data augmentation method to improve the accuracy of pose estimation and facilitate the reconstruction of 3D point clouds. We systematically evaluate state-of-the-art RGB-based and point cloud-based models using RAD, identifying limitations and future research directions. Domain adaptation aims to reduce the model degradation on the target domain caused by the domain shift between the source and target domains. Although encouraging performance has been achieved by combining cognitive learning with the self-training paradigm, they suffer from ambiguous scenarios caused by scale, illumination, or overlapping when deploying deterministic embedding. To address these issues, we propose probabilistic proto-typical pixel contrast (PPPC), a universal adaptation framework that models each pixel embedding as a probability via multivariate Gaussian distribution to fully exploit the uncertainty within them, eventually improving the representation quality of the model. In addition, we derive prototypes from probability estimation posterior probability estimation which helps to push the decision boundary away from the ambiguity points. Moreover, we employ an efficient method to compute similarity between distributions, eliminating the need for sampling and reparameterization, thereby significantly reducing computational overhead. Further, we dynamically select the ambiguous crops at the image level to enlarge the number of boundary points involved in contrastive learning, which benefits the establishment of precise distributions for each category. Extensive experimentation demonstrates that PPPC not only helps to address ambiguity at the pixel level, yielding discriminative representations but also achieves significant improvements in both synthetic-to-real and day-to-night adaptation tasks. It surpasses the previous state-of-the-art (SOTA) by +5.2% mIoU in the most challenging daytime-to-nighttime adaptation scenario, exhibiting stronger generalization on other unseen datasets. This paper introduces a new framework for clustering in a distributed network called Distributed Clustering based on Distributional Kernel (K) or KDC that produces the final clusters based on the similarity with respect to the distributions of initial clusters, as measured by K. It is the only framework that satisfies all three of the following properties. First, KDC guarantees that the combined clustering outcome from all sites is equivalent to the clustering outcome of its centralized counterpart from the combined dataset from all sites. Second, the maximum runtime cost of any site in distributed mode is smaller than the runtime cost in centralized mode. Third, it is designed to discover clusters of arbitrary shapes, sizes and densities. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first distributed clustering framework that employs a distributional kernel. The distribution-based clustering leads directly to significantly better clustering outcomes than existing methods of distributed clustering. In addition, we introduce a new clustering algorithm called Kernel Bounded Cluster Cores, which is the best clustering algorithm applied to KDC among existing clustering algorithms. We also show that KDC is a generic framework that enables a quadratic time clustering algorithm to deal with large datasets that would otherwise be impossible.

Diamond particles have many interesting properties and possible applications. However, producing diamond particles with well-defined shapes at scale is challenging because diamonds are chemically inert and extremely hard. Here, we show air oxidation, a routine method for purifying diamonds, can be used to precisely shape diamond particles at scale. By exploiting the distinct reactivities of different crystal facets and defects inside the diamond, layer-by-layer outward-to-inward and inward-to-outward oxidation produced diverse diamond shapes including sphere, twisted surface, pyramidal islands, inverted pyramids, nano-flowers, and hollow polygons. The nanosculpted diamonds had more and finer features that enabled them to outperform the original raw diamonds in various applications. Using experimental observations and Monte Carlo simulations, we built a shape library that guides the design and fabrication of diamond particles with well-defined shapes and functional value. Our study presents a simple, economical and scalable way to produce shape-customized diamonds for various photonics, catalysis, quantum and information technology applications.

Dataset distillation has emerged as a strategy to overcome the hurdles associated with large datasets by learning a compact set of synthetic data that retains essential information from the original dataset. While distilled data can be used to train high performing models, little is understood about how the information is stored. In this study, we posit and answer three questions about the behavior, representativeness, and point-wise information content of distilled data. We reveal distilled data cannot serve as a substitute for real data during training outside the standard evaluation setting for dataset distillation. Additionally, the distillation process retains high task performance by compressing information related to the early training dynamics of real models. Finally, we provide an framework for interpreting distilled data and reveal that individual distilled data points contain meaningful semantic information. Image segmentation plays a critical role in unlocking the mysteries of the universe, providing astronomers with a clearer perspective on celestial objects within complex astronomical images and data cubes. Manual segmentation, while traditional, is not only time-consuming but also susceptible to biases introduced by human intervention. As a result, automated segmentation methods have become essential for achieving robust and consistent results in astronomical studies. This review begins by summarizing traditional and classical segmentation methods widely used in astronomical tasks. Despite the significant improvements these methods have brought to segmentation outcomes, they fail to meet astronomers' expectations, requiring additional human correction, further intensifying the labor-intensive nature of the segmentation process. The review then focuses on the transformative impact of machine learning, particularly deep learning, on segmentation tasks in astronomy. It introduces state-of-the-art machine learning approaches, highlighting their applications and the remarkable advancements they bring to segmentation accuracy in both astronomical images and data cubes. As the field of machine learning continues to evolve rapidly, it is anticipated that astronomers will increasingly leverage these sophisticated techniques to enhance segmentation tasks in their research projects. In essence, this review serves as a comprehensive guide to the evolution of segmentation methods in astronomy, emphasizing the transition from classical approaches to cutting-edge machine learning methodologies. ChatGPT has changed the AI community and an active research line is the performance evaluation of ChatGPT. A key challenge for the evaluation is that ChatGPT is still closed-source and traditional benchmark datasets may have been used by ChatGPT as the training data. In this paper, (i) we survey recent studies which uncover the real performance levels of ChatGPT in seven categories of NLP tasks, (ii) review the social implications and safety issues of ChatGPT, and (iii) emphasize key challenges and opportunities for its evaluation. The boom of Generative AI brings opportunities entangled with risks and concerns. In this work, we seek a step toward a universal deepfake detection system with better generalization and robustness, to accommodate the responsible deployment of diverse image generative models. We do so by first scaling up the existing detection task setup from the one-generator to multiple-generators in training, during which we disclose two challenges presented in prior methodological designs. Specifically, we reveal that the current methods tailored for training on one specific generator either struggle to learn comprehensive artifacts from multiple generators or tend to sacrifice their ability to identify fake images from seen generators (i.e., In-Domain performance) to exchange the generalization for unseen generators (i.e., Out-Of-Domain performance). To tackle the above challenges, we propose our Discrepancy Deepfake Detector (D$^3$) framework, whose core idea is to learn the universal artifacts from multiple generators by introducing a parallel network branch that takes a distorted image as extra discrepancy signal to supplement its original counterpart. Extensive scaled-up experiments on the merged UFD and GenImage datasets with six detection models demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework, achieving a 5.3% accuracy improvement in the OOD testing compared to the current SOTA methods while maintaining the ID performance., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

The computation of the skyline provides a mechanism for utilizing multiple location-based criteria to identify optimal data points. However, the efficiency of these computations diminishes and becomes more challenging as the input data expands. This study presents a novel algorithm aimed at mitigating this challenge by harnessing the capabilities of Apache Spark, a distributed processing platform, for conducting area skyline computations. The proposed algorithm enhances processing speed and scalability. In particular, our algorithm encompasses three key phases: the computation of distances between data points, the generation of distance tuples, and the execution of the skyline operators. Notably, the second phase employs a local partial skyline extraction technique to minimize the volume of data transmitted from each executor (a parallel processing procedure) to the driver (a central processing procedure). Afterwards, the driver processes the received data to determine the final skyline and creates filters to exclude irrelevant points. Extensive experimentation on eight datasets reveals that our algorithm significantly reduces both data size and computation time required for area skyline computation.

Anomaly detection is a longstanding and active research area that has many applications in domains such as finance, security, and manufacturing. However, the efficiency and performance of anomaly detection algorithms are challenged by the large-scale, high-dimensional, and heterogeneous data that are prevalent in the era of big data. Isolation-based unsupervised anomaly detection is a novel and effective approach for identifying anomalies in data. It relies on the idea that anomalies are few and different from normal instances, and thus can be easily isolated by random partitioning. Isolation-based methods have several advantages over existing methods, such as low computational complexity, low memory usage, high scalability, robustness to noise and irrelevant features, and no need for prior knowledge or heavy parameter tuning. In this survey, we review the state-of-the-art isolation-based anomaly detection methods, including their data partitioning strategies, anomaly score functions, and algorithmic details. We also discuss some extensions and applications of isolation-based methods in different scenarios, such as detecting anomalies in streaming data, time series, trajectory, and image datasets. Finally, we identify some open challenges and future directions for isolation-based anomaly detection research.

Generative AI capabilities have grown substantially in recent years, raising renewed concerns about potential malicious use of generated data, or "deep fakes". However, deep fake datasets have not kept up with generative AI advancements sufficiently to enable the development of deep fake detection technology which can meaningfully alert human users in real-world settings. Existing datasets typically use GAN-based models and introduce spurious correlations by always editing similar face regions. To counteract the shortcomings, we introduce DETER, a large-scale dataset for DETEcting edited image Regions and deterring modern advanced generative manipulations. DETER includes 300,000 images manipulated by four state-of-the-art generators with three editing operations: face swapping (a standard coarse image manipulation), inpainting (a novel manipulation for deep fake datasets), and attribute editing (a subtle fine-grained manipulation). While face swapping and attribute editing are performed on similar face regions such as eyes and nose, the inpainting operation can be performed on random image regions, removing the spurious correlations of previous datasets. Careful image post-processing is performed to ensure deep fakes in DETER look realistic, and human studies confirm that human deep fake detection rate on DETER is 20.4% lower than on other fake datasets. Equipped with the dataset, we conduct extensive experiments and break-down analysis using our rich annotations and improved benchmark protocols, revealing future directions and the next set of challenges in developing reliable regional fake detection models., Comment: First two authors contribute equally to this work. In this work, we study the generalization properties of diffusion models in a few-shot setup, introduce a novel tuning-free paradigm to synthesize the target out-of-domain (OOD) data, and demonstrate its advantages compared to existing methods in data-sparse scenarios with large domain gaps. Specifically, given a pre-trained model and a small set of images that are OOD relative to the model's training distribution, we explore whether the frozen model is able to generalize to this new domain. We begin by revealing that Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DDPMs) trained on single-domain images are already equipped with sufficient representation abilities to reconstruct arbitrary images from the inverted latent encoding following bi-directional deterministic diffusion and denoising trajectories. We then demonstrate through both theoretical and empirical perspectives that the OOD images establish Gaussian priors in latent spaces of the given model, and the inverted latent modes are separable from their initial training domain. We then introduce our novel tuning-free paradigm to synthesize new images of the target unseen domain by discovering qualified OOD latent encodings in the inverted noisy spaces. This is fundamentally different from the current paradigm that seeks to modify the denoising trajectory to achieve the same goal by tuning the model parameters. Extensive cross-model and domain experiments show that our proposed method can expand the latent space and generate unseen images via frozen DDPMs without impairing the quality of generation of their original domain. Trajectory clustering enables the discovery of common patterns in trajectory data. Current methods of trajectory clustering rely on a distance measure between two points in order to measure the dissimilarity between two trajectories. The distance measures employed have two challenges: high computational cost and low fidelity. Independent of the distance measure employed, existing clustering algorithms have another challenge: either effectiveness issues or high time complexity. In this paper, we propose to use a recent Isolation Distributional Kernel (IDK) as the main tool to meet all three challenges. The new IDK-based clustering algorithm, called TIDKC, makes full use of the distributional kernel for trajectory similarity measuring and clustering. TIDKC identifies non-linearly separable clusters with irregular shapes and varied densities in linear time. It does not rely on random initialisation and is robust to outliers. An extensive evaluation on 7 large real-world trajectory datasets confirms that IDK is more effective in capturing complex structures in trajectories than traditional and deep learning-based distance measures. Furthermore, the proposed TIDKC has superior clustering performance and efficiency to existing trajectory clustering algorithms.

Originating from the diffusion phenomenon in physics that describes particle movement, the diffusion generative models inherit the characteristics of stochastic random walk in the data space along the denoising trajectory. However, the intrinsic mutual interference among image regions contradicts the need for practical downstream application scenarios where the preservation of low-level pixel information from given conditioning is desired (e.g., customization tasks like personalized generation and inpainting based on a user-provided single image). In this work, we investigate the diffusion (physics) in diffusion (machine learning) properties and propose our Cyclic One-Way Diffusion (COW) method to control the direction of diffusion phenomenon given a pre-trained frozen diffusion model for versatile customization application scenarios, where the low-level pixel information from the conditioning needs to be preserved. Notably, unlike most current methods that incorporate additional conditions by fine-tuning the base text-to-image diffusion model or learning auxiliary networks, our method provides a novel perspective to understand the task needs and is applicable to a wider range of customization scenarios in a learning-free manner. Extensive experiment results show that our proposed COW can achieve more flexible customization based on strict visual conditions in different application settings.
