In recent years, moir\'e lattice has become a hot topic and inspired the research upsurge of moir\'e lattice. In this work, we propose a method of constructing a multi-composite moir\'e lattice, which is composed of over three periodic component structures. Moreover, we propose the moir\'e lattice-metasurface structure, which can realize the multi-wavelength interface states between these kinds of moir\'e lattices and metasurfaces. The wavelength, polarization, and number of moir\'e interface states can be manipulated flexibly, with anisotropic metasurfaces. These multi-wavelength interface states are employed to enhance quantum emission (QE) and over 20 times QE efficiency can be obtained., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures

In recent years, twisted bilayer graphene has become a hot topic and inspired the research upsurge of photonic moir\'e lattice. Here, we designed a photonic moir\'e superlattice with two synthetic twist angles and constructed a synthetic moir\'e sphere based on these two angles. Thus, we have more degrees of freedom to design the band structure flexibly. A type of transition photonic bands (TPBs) is obtained in such a moir\'e superlattice. We investigate the influence of two twist angles on TPBs and find a series of magic angle pairs with optimal band compression of TPB. The interesting optical properties of TPBs are experimentally demonstrated, including pulse delay, nonlinear optical enhancement, and pulse width compression. Our work introduces a new path to explore multi-twist angles moir\'e superlattices and reveals that the designed photonic moir\'e superlattice based on moir\'e spheres has broad application prospects including optical signal processing, nonlinear optics processes ,and other light-matter interactions.

In this work, which is based on spin-2 vectors and traceless spin-2 tensors, an effective Hamiltonian is constructed with a linearly dispersive five-fold degenerate point with spin-2 vector-momentum couplings. For the model without spin-2 vector-tensor coupling, the topological Chern numbers of five bands are calculated as 4, 2, 0, -2, -4. After including spin-2 vector-tensor coupling, separate topological Chern numbers are obtained for different couplings. A cubic lattice of atoms with five internal states is designed to realize two five-fold degenerate points. The Chern numbers of the bands can be changed by tuning the coupling coefficient. Our experiment shows that the thermal emission of phonon can be controlled by magnetic resonance (MR) mode in a metasurface (MTS). Through changing the structural parameter of metasurface, the MR wavelength can be tuned to the phonon resonance wavelength. This introduces a strong coupling between phonon and MR, which results in an anticrossing phonon-plasmons mode. In the process, we can manipulate the polarization and angular radiation of thermal emission of phonon. Next-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg chain plays important roles in solid state physics, such as predicting exotic electric properties of two-dimensional materials or magnetic properties of organic compounds. Direct experimental studies of the many-body electron systems or spin systems associating to these materials are challenging tasks, while optical simulation provides an effective and economical way for immediate observation. Comparing with bulk optics, integrated optics are more of fascinating for steady, large scale and long-time evolution simulations. Photonic crystal is an artificial microstructure material with multiple methods to tune the propagation properties, which are essential for various simulation tasks. Here we report for the first time an experimental simulation of next-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg chain with an integrated optical chip of photonic crystal waveguide array. The use of photonic crystal enhances evanescent field thus allows coupling between next-nearest-neighbor waveguides in such a planar waveguide array, without breaking the weak coupling condition of the coupled mode equation. Particularly, similarities between the model and coherent light propagation could reach 0.99 in numerical simulations and 0.89 in experiment. Localization effect induced by second-order coupling and coupling strengthening with increasing wavelengths were also revealed in both numerical simulations and experiments. The platform proposed here is compatible with mature complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology thus possesses the potential for larger-scale problems and photonic crystals further allows simulations of specific target Hamiltonians., Comment: 22 pages, 13 pages

We experimentally demonstrate the orbital angular momentum (OAM) conversion by the coupled nonlinear optical processes in a quasi-periodically poled LiTaO3 crystal. In such crystal, third-harmonic generation (THG) is realized by the coupled second-harmonic generation (SHG) and sum-frequency generation (SFG) processes, i.e., SHG is dependent on SFG and vice versa. The OAMs of the interacting waves are proved to be conserved in such coupled nonlinear optical processes. As increasing the input OAM in the experiment, the conversion efficiency decreases because of the reduced fundamental power intensity. Our results provide better understanding for the OAM conversions, which can be used to efficiently produce an optical OAM state at a short wavelength.

It has been proved that surface plasmon polariton (SPP) can well conserve and transmit the quantum nature of entangled photons. Therefore, further utilization and manipulation of such quantum nature of SPP in a plasmonic chip will be the next task for scientists in this field. In quantum logic circuits, the controlled-NOT (CNOT) gate is the key building block. Here, we implement the first plasmonic quantum CNOT gate with several-micrometer footprint by utilizing a single polarization-dependent beam-splitter (PDBS) fabricated on the dielectric-loaded SPP waveguide (DLSPPW). The quantum logic function of the CNOT gate is characterized by the truth table with an average fidelity of. Its entangling ability to transform a separable state into an entangled state is demonstrated with the visibilities of and for non-orthogonal bases. The DLSPPW based CNOT gate is considered to have good integratability and scalability, which will pave a new way for quantum information science.

In this work we present a refractive index sensor based on the leaky radiation of a microfiber. The 5.3um diameter microfiber is fabricated by drawing a commercial optical fiber. When the microfiber is immersed into a liquid with larger refractive index than the effective index of fiber mode, the light will leak out through the leaky radiation process. The variation of refractive index of liquid can be monitored by measuring radiation angle of light. The refractive index sensitivity can be over 400 degree/RIU in theory. In the experiment, the variation value 0.001 of refractive index of liquid around this microfiber can be detected through this technique. Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) as a bounded mode on a metal/dielectric interface intrinsically has a definite transverse magnetic (TM) polarization that usually lacks further manipulations. However, the in-plane longitudinal components of SPP field can produce versatile polarization states when two orthogonal propagating SPP interfere with each other. Here, we demonstrated a plasmonic polarization router by designing appropriate nanohole arrays that can selectively scatter the interfered SPP fields to desired light beams. It is well proved that our device is able to reconfigure a certain input polarization to all kinds of states with respect to a scattered light. Accompanied with a composite phase modulation by diffractions, multiple focusing beams with different polarization states are simultaneously achieved, promising the possibility in polarization multiplexing and related signal processing. Our design offers a new route for achieving full control of the optical polarizations as well as the optical spin-orbital interactions.

Integrated quantum optics becomes a consequent tendency towards practical quantum information processing. Here, we report the on-chip generation and manipulation of photonic entanglement based on reconfigurable lithium niobate waveguide circuits. By introducing periodically poled structure into the waveguide interferometer, two individual photon-pair sources with controllable phase-shift are produced and cascaded by a quantum interference, resulting in a deterministically separated identical photon pair. The state is characterized by 92.9% visibility Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. Continuous morphing from two-photon separated state to bunched state is further demonstrated by on-chip control of electro-optic phase-shift. The photon flux reaches ~1.4*10^7 pairs nm-1 mW-1. Our work presents a scenario for on-chip engineering of different photon sources and paves a way to the fully integrated quantum technologies.

One of the most fascinating predictions of the theory of general relativity is the effect of gravitational lensing, the bending of light in close proximity to massive stellar objects. Recently, artificial optical materials have been proposed to study the various aspects of curved spacetimes, including light trapping and Hawking's radiation. However, the development of experimental toy models that simulate gravitational lensing in curved spacetimes remains a challenge, especially for visible light. Here, by utilizing a microstructured optical waveguide around a microsphere, we propose to mimic curved spacetimes caused by gravity, with high precision. We experimentally demonstrate both far-field gravitational lensing effects and the critical phenomenon in close proximity to the photon sphere of astrophysical objects under hydrostatic equilibrium. The proposed microstructured waveguide can be used as an omnidirectional absorber, with potential light harvesting and microcavity applications., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures. We report a simple, novel sub-diffraction method, i.e. diffraction interference induced super-focusing in second-harmonic (SH) Talbot effect, to achieve focusing size of less than {\lambda}_pump/8 without involving evanescent waves or sub-wavelength apertures. By tailoring point spread functions with Fresnel diffraction interference, we observe periodic SH sub-diffracted spots over a hundred of micrometers away from the sample. Our demonstration is the first experimental realization of the proposal by Toraldo Di Francia pioneered 60 years ago for super-resolution imaging.

Photonic entangled states lie at the heart of quantum science for the demonstrations of quantum mechanics foundations and supply as a key resource for approaching various quantum technologies. An integrated realization of such states will certainly guarantee a high-degree of entanglement and improve the performance like portability, stability and miniaturization, hence becomes an inevitable tendency towards the integrated quantum optics. Here, we report the compact realization of steerable photonic path-entangled states from a monolithic quadratic nonlinear photonic crystal. The crystal acts as an inherent beam splitter to distribute photons into coherent spatial modes, producing the heralded single-photon even appealing beamlike two-photon path-entanglement, wherein the entanglement is characterized by quantum spatial beatings. Such multifunctional entangled source can be further extended to high-dimensional fashion and multi-photon level as well as involved with other degrees of freedom, which paves a desirable way to engineer miniaturized quantum light source.

We worked out a new group of collimated plasmon beams by the means of in-plane diffraction with symmetric phase modulation. As the phase type changes from 1.8 to 1.0, the beam undergoes an interesting evolution from focusing to a straight line. Upon this, an intuitive diagram was proposed to elucidate the beam nature and answer the question whether they are nondiffracting or linear focusing. Based on this diagram, we further achieved a highly designable scheme to modulate the beam intensity (e.g., 'lossless' plasmon). Our finding holds remarkable generality and flexibility in beam engineering and would inspire more intriguing photonic designs.

We demonstrate that a transformation device can be emulated using a gradient-index waveguide. The effective index of the waveguide is spatially varied by tailoring a gradient thickness dielectric waveguide. Based on this technology, we demonstrate a transformation device guiding visible light around a sharp corner, with low scattering loss and reflection loss. We demonstrate that both linear and nonlinear Fano resonances can be realized on two dimensional magnetic metamaterials. The Fano resonance comes from the interference between localized magnetic plasmon resonance and propagating surface plasmon polaritons. When studying the linear optical response of the metamaterial structure, this interference phenomenon was observed in the ellipsometric spectrum. By finely tailoring the geometrical parameters of the magnetic metamaterial device, the nonlinear Fano response was tuned to a near-infrared wavelength (1.61-1.8 {\mu}m) of femtosecond pump laser, and Fano-type modulation of the third harmonic generation was found and agrees well with our theoretical model., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, published at Physical Review B 84, 235437 (2011)

A coupled magnetic resonator waveguide, composed of a contacting gold nanosphere chain on a gold slab, is proposed and investigated. A broadband coherent magnetic plasmon mode can be excited in this one dimensional nanostructure. By employing the Lagrangian formalism and the Fourier transform method, the dispersion properties of the wave vector and group velocity of the magnetic plasmon mode are investigated. In this work, the plasmon coupling effect between two gold nanospheres on a gold slab is investigated. At plasmon resonance frequencies, electrons on the surface of the slab are absorbed into spheres and contribute to plasmon oscillation. Optical Airy beam, as a novel non-diffracting and self-accelerating wave packet, has generated great enthusiasm since its first realization in 2007, owing to its unique physics and exciting applications. Here, we report a new form of this intriguing wave packet - plasmonic Airy beam, which is experimentally realized on a silver surface for the first time. By particular diffraction processes in a carefully designed nano-array structure, a novel planar Airy beam of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is directly generated and a structural dependent phase tuning method is proposed to modulate the beam properties. This SPP Airy beam is regarded as a two-dimensional (2D) subwavelength counterpart of the 3D optical Airy beam in free space, allowing for on-chip photonic manipulations. Moreover, it possibly suggests a breakthrough in recognition of this unique wave packet in a polariton regime after its previous evolution from free particle to pure optical wave.

We found that very strong negative optical pressure can be induced in plasmonic cavities by LC resonance. This interesting effect could be described qualitatively by a Lagrangian model which shows that the negative optical pressure is driven by the internal inductance and the kinetic energy of the conduction electrons. If the metal is replaced by perfect conductors, the optical pressure becomes much smaller and positive., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

A one-dimensional diatomic meta-chain with equal-size holes and different-length slits is designed. Broadband coherent magnetic plasmon waves (MPW) are formed in such a system, excited by both the electric resonance in the slits and the magnetic resonance in the holes in a wide range of incidence angles (00-400) and broad frequency bands (200-230 THz). The dispersion properties of the MPW measured in our experiments agree with the theoretical calculation based on the Lagrange model. The coherent MPWs reported in this paper may have applications in subwavelength integrated nanocircuits.

We numerically investigated the magnetic plasmon resonances in double-rod and triple-rod structures (DRSs and TRSs, respectively) for sensing applications. According to the equivalent circuit model, one magnetic plasmon mode was induced in the DRS. Due to the hybridization effect, two magnetic plasmon modes were obtained in the TRS. Compared with the electric plasmon resonance in a single-rod structure (SRS), the electromagnetic fields near the DRS and TRS were much more localized in the dielectric surrounding the structures at the resonance wavelengths. This caused the magnetic plasmon resonance wavelengths to become very sensitive to refractive index changes in the environment medium. As a result, a large figure of merit that is much larger than the electric plasmon modes of SRS could be obtained in the magnetic plasmon modes of DRS and TRS. These magnetic plasmon mode properties enable the use of DRSs and TRSs as sensing elements with remarkable performance.

We employ a general Lagrange model to describe the chiral optical properties of stereometamaterials. We derive the elliptical eigenstates of a twisted stacked split-ring resonator, taking phase retardation into account. Through this approach, we obtain a powerful Jones matrix formalism which can be used to calculate the polarization rotation, ellipticity, and circular dichroism of transmitted waves through stereometamaterials at any incident polarization. Loss is a crucial problem in plasmonic integrated optical circuits and metamaterials. The Er, Yb codoped gain material is introduced into a magnetic plasmon waveguide composed of a chain of nanosandwiches in order to solve the loss problem in such subwavelength waveguide. The magnetic plasmon mode and a higher order mode are chosen as the signal and pump light to enhance the radiation and pump efficiencies. The signal light propagating in the waveguide is investigated with different Er3+ doping concentration and signal decay time. It is shown that the gain effect can not only compensate the loss but also is able to amplify the signal, when exceeding certain threshold values of doping concentration and signal decay time., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

This work investigates a kind of metallic magnetic cavity based on slit-hole resonators (SHRs). Two orthogonal hybrid magnetic resonance modes of the cavity with a large spatial overlap are predesigned at the wavelengths of 980 nm and 1550 nm. The Yb-Er co-doped material serving as a gain medium is set in the cavity; this enables the resonator to have high optical activity. The numerical result shows that the strong lasing at 1550 nm may be achieved when the cavity array is pumped at 980 nm. Simultaneously enhanced reflectance and transmittance greater than 35 dB are demonstrated for the lasing spaser (or spasing) behavior in an active fishnet metamaterial. In mimicking a lasing cavity, an equivalent active slab with Lorentz dispersion for the index of refraction is established to model the spasing metamaterial through the Fabry-Perot effect. Numerical and theoretical results show good agreement in the equal enhancement of reflectance and transmittance, as well as the non-monotonic dependence of the spasing intensity on the gain coefficient. This paper investigates the radiation properties of two coupled split-ring resonators (SRRs). Due to electromagnetic coupling, two hybrid magnetic plasmon modes were induced in the structure. Our calculations show that the radiation loss of the structure was greatly suppressed by the hybridization effect. This led to a remarkable increase in the Q-factor of the coupled system compared to the single SRR. By adjusting the distance between the two SRRs, the Q-factor changed correspondingly due to different electromagnetic coupling strengths. Magnetic resonance coupling between connected split ring resonators (SRRs) and magnetic plasmon (MP) excitations in the connected SRR chains were theoretically studied. By changing the connection configuration, two different coupling behaviors were observed, and therefore two kinds of MP bands were formed in the connected ring chains, accordingly. These MPs were revealed with positive and negative dispersion for the homo- and anti-connected chain, respectively. Notably, these two MP modes both have wide bandwidth due to the conductive coupling. Magnetic metamaterials consist of magnetic resonators smaller in size than their excitation wavelengths. Their unique electromagnetic properties were characterized by the effective media theory at the early stage. However, the effective media model does not take into account the interactions between magnetic elements; thus, the effective properties of bulk metamaterials are the result of the "averaged effect" of many uncoupled resonators. In recent years, it has been shown that the interaction between magnetic resonators could lead to some novel phenomena and interesting applications that do not exist in conventional uncoupled metamaterials. In this paper, we will give a review of recent developments in magnetic plasmonics arising from the coupling effect in metamaterials. For the system composed of several identical magnetic resonators, the coupling between these units produces multiple discrete resonance modes due to hybridization. In the case of a system comprising an infinite number of magnetic elements, these multiple discrete resonances can be extended to form a continuous frequency band by strong coupling. This kind of broadband and tunable magnetic metamaterial may have interesting applications. We propose and analyze theoretically a double magnetic plasmon resonance nanolaser, in which Ytterbium-erbium co-doped material is used as the gain medium. Through design of the double magnetic resonance modes, pumping light (980nm) can be resonantly absorbed and laser light (1550nm) can be resonantly generated simultaneously. We introduce a set of rate equations combined to describe the operation of the laser and predict the lasing condition. According to our calculations, the disadvantage that pumping light is difficult to be absorbed by a thin slab of gain materials can be overcome., Comment: 13pages, 4 figures

In this paper, we will propose that magnetic-resonance nanostructures in a metal surface could be used to realize extraordinary optical transmission (EOT). Toward this goal, we designed and fabricated a one dimensional diatomic chain of slit-hole resonator (SHR). Due to the strong exchange current interaction, a type of magnetic plasmon (MP) propagation mode with a broad frequency bandwidth was established in this system. Apparent EOT peaks induced by the MP mode were observed in our measured spectra at infrared frequencies. The strongest EOT peak was obtained at 1.07 eV with an incident angle of 20 degree. The measured dependence of EOT peaks on the incident angle coincided with the theoretical results quite well. A [pi]-shaped metallic metamaterial (geometrically, a combination medium of C-shaped resonators and continuous wires) is proposed to numerically investigate its transmission band near the resonant frequency, where otherwise it should be a negative-permeability (or negative-permittivity) stop band if either the C-shaped or continuous-wire constituent is separately considered. However, in contrast to the left-handed materials (LHMs)composed of split-ring resonators and wires as well as other metallic LHMs, this resonant transmission is a non-left-handed one as a result of the intrinsic bianisotropic effect attributed to the electrically asymmetric configuration of this [pi]-shaped metamaterial., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

Negative-index refraction is achieved in a lamellar composite with epsilon-negative (ENG) and mu-negative (MNG) materials stacked alternatively. Based on the effective medium approximation, simultaneously negative effective permittivity and permeability of such a lamellar composite are obtained theoretically and further proven by full-wave simulations. Consequently, the famous left-handed metamaterial comprising split ring resonators and wires is interpreted as an analogy of such an ENG-MNG lamellar composite. In addition, beyond the effective medium approximation, the propagating field squeezed near the ENG/MNG interface is demonstrated to be left-handed surface waves with backward phase velocity., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures

A wedge-shaped structure made of split-ring resonators (SRR) and wires is numerically simulated to evaluate its refraction behavior. Four frequency bands, namely, the stop band, left-handed band, ultralow-index band, and positive-index band, are distinguished according to the refracted field distributions. Negative phase velocity inside the wedge is demonstrated in the left-handed band and the Snell's law is conformed in terms of its refraction behaviors in different frequency bands. Our results confirmed that negative index of refraction indeed exists in such a composite metamaterial and also provided a convincing support to the results of previous Snell's law experiments., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures
