7. Investigation into use of surface waves on bubbles walls to measure surface tension and to conduct cleaning

Abstract

This thesis conducts two experimental investigations associated with the generation of surface waves (the most famous of which is the Faraday wave) on the surface of an underwater gas bubble in response to insonification by an appropriate sound field. The first of these is the measurement of surface tension. The surface tension of a liquid is an important parameter for estimating and analysing the processes that happen on the air/liquid interface, such as the air/sea gas exchange. Current methods of measuring surface tension concentrate on measuring its value at the top flat air/liquid interface. However, in cases where bubbles mediate oceanic processes (such as their contributions to air-to-sea transfers of mass, energy, and momentum), the value of surface tension that is needed (e.g., for placement in models of the evolution and persistence of sub-surface bubble clouds) is the instantaneous value on the bubble wall, as it moves through the ocean and potentially collects surface-active species onto the bubble wall. This thesis introduces a method of estimating the value of this in situ surface tension, by insonifying a bubble and observing the onset of Faraday waves on a bubble wall. This new method was compared with a traditional ring method in various scenarios. Whilst the threshold for the generation of the Faraday wave provides a clear indicator to measure the surface tension (as described above), once they have been established the Faraday waves induce other effects, and these were also investigated in this thesis. When a bubble undergoes surface wave motion, it generates high local shear and convection in the liquid close to the bubble wall, and so produce a cleaning effect, and alters the way material deposits onto surfaces. This effect is used by a novel ultrasonic cleaning device, which unlike the traditional ultrasonic cleaning bath that relies on cavitation and shock waves, has many advantages. The second part of this thesis presents an application of conducting cleaning by using surface waves on bubble walls. The thesis closes with consideration of improvements and future work in these two applications of the acoustic stimulation of surface waves on bubbles walls.

Abstract

Container technology has gained a widespread application in cloud computing environments due to its low resource overhead and high flexibility. However, as the number of containers grows, it becomes increasingly challenging to achieve the rapid and coordinated optimization of multiple objectives for container scheduling, while maintaining system stability and security. This paper aims to overcome these challenges and provides the optimal allocation for a large number of containers. First, a large-scale multi-objective container scheduling optimization model is constructed, which involves the task completion time, resource cost, and load balancing. Second, a novel optimization algorithm called LSMOF-AD (large-scale multi-objective optimization framework with muti-stage and adaptive differential strategies) is proposed to effectively handle large-scale container scheduling problems. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has a better performance in multiple benchmark problems compared to other advanced algorithms and can effectively reduce the task processing delay, while achieving a high resource utilization and load balancing compared to other scheduling strategies. Abstract

With the ever-increasing influence of social media such as Weibo, social media advertising has gradually received attention. In recent years, compared with traditional advertising, social media advertising has developed more rapidly and has a better prospect. Therefore, whether it is from the perspective of advertisers or from the perspective of consumers, it is of great significance to explore the factors that affect advertising acceptance. On the basis of reviewing a large number of related research, we proposes a research model that mainly studies the relationship between motivation and the advertising acceptance of Weibo forwarding advertising, and discusses the moderating effect of involvement. Data will be collected from undergraduates and postgraduates at a certain university in the south. This research can provide suggestions for advertisers to improve their advertising, so as to achieve a win-win situation between advertisers and consumers. Implications and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract

The rapid development of information technology has led to massive online reviews which are generated on the Web, this paper aims to explore the determinants of review helpfulness. In this research, we propose a conceptual model from the perspective of content quality and source quality and incorporate supervised machine learning approaches to learn the impact factors of online book reviews. Specifically, we compared two supervised machine learning algorithms of ANN (Artificial Neural Network) and SVM (Support Vector Machine) and Linear Regression approach. Book reviews are collected from douban.com for ten popular books. We found that long sentences and the extreme emotion is more helpful and can be more persuasive. The empirical findings also indicated that the ANN and SVM algorithms outperformed the ordinary OLS algorithms.

32. UVA-LED-Assisted Activation of the Ferrate(VI) Process for Enhanced Micropollutant Degradation: Important Role of Ferrate(IV) and Ferrate(V).

Abstract

This paper investigated ultraviolet A light-emitting diode (UVA-LED) irradiation to activate Fe(VI) for the degradation of micropollutants (e.g., sulfamethoxazole (SMX), enrofloxacin, and trimethoprim). UVA-LED/Fe(VI) could significantly promote the degradation of micropollutants, with rates that were 2.6-7.2-fold faster than for Fe(VI) alone. Comparatively, UVA-LED alone hardly degraded selected micropollutants. The degradation performance was further evaluated in SMX degradation via different wavelengths (365-405 nm), light intensity, and pH. Increased wavelengths led to linearly decreased SMX degradation rates because Fe(VI) has a lower molar absorption coefficient at higher wavelengths. Higher light intensity caused faster SMX degradation, owing to the enhanced level of reactive species by stronger photolysis of Fe(VI). Significantly, SMX degradation was gradually suppressed from pH 7.0 to 9.0 due to the changing speciation of Fe(VI). Scavenging and probing experiments for identifying oxidative species indicated that high-valent iron species (Fe(V)/Fe(IV)) were responsible for the enhanced degradation. A kinetic model involving target compound (TC) degradation by Fe(VI), Fe(V), and Fe(IV) was employed to fit the TC degradation kinetics by UVA-LED/Fe(VI). The fitted results revealed that Fe(IV) and Fe(V) primarily contributed to TC degradation in this system. In addition, transformation products of SMX degradation by Fe(VI) and UVA-LED/Fe(VI) were identified and the possible pathways included hydroxylation, self-coupling, bond cleavage, and oxidation reactions. Removal of SMX in real water also showed remarkable promotion by UVA-LED/Fe(VI). Overall, these findings could shed light on the understanding and application of UVA-LED/Fe(VI) for eliminating micropollutants in water treatments.
