Abstract

The radiofrequency-induced intestine fusion has been widely studied as an alternative for traditional suture in surgery, but fusion quality cannot be evaluated directly. Impedance measurement can evaluate fusion quality, but the relation between impedance and the fusion quality needs optimization for best results. The present study reports the optimum resistance of small intestine fusion. As the feedback signal, resistance was considered the indicator of the fusion completion for the device design of intestine fusion and an in-depth study of microstructure change. A self-design pulse source was used for the small intestine fusion with adjustable voltage, duty ratio, frequency and output time. A frequency of 440 kHz was set, whereas voltage, output time and compression pressure (CP) of the small intestine were independent variables. Different conditions of voltage, CP and time were investigated for achieving the highest burst pressure (BP) measured with a pressure gauge and a peristaltic pump. Each parameter of the equivalent circuit model was calculated by an experimental waveform. Hematoxylin–eosin staining of fusion samples was used for assessing the quality of fusion. The real-time current was measured and recorded during the fusion for the calculation of capacitance and resistance. The highest BP of 38.9 mmHg was achieved with a CP of 900 kPa, a voltage of 50 V and a time of 5 s. Finally, an optimum extracellular resistance range of 61.0–86.2 Ω was found as the optimum resistance for the end of fusion, thus indicating automatic fusion with the best fusion quality.

20. Prediction and analysis of surface settlement due to shield tunneling for Xi'an Metro

Abstract

This study describes a new modified prediction method of surface settlement (SS) for Xi'an Metro. The estimation method of SS and its characteristic parameters, volume loss (VL), maximal SS, and settlement trough width (STW) are reviewed and discussed in this paper. The gap parameter (GP) is applied to estimate VL; however, the calculation method of GP and its influence factors have not been clarified entirely. In this study, six influence factors are introduced into the new GP model, and the detailed solutions are presented. This estimation method is able to take into account the support pressure of the shield head at the tunnel face, the lining support pressure around the tunnel opening, the filling effect of tail grouting, yawing, and pitching of the shielding machine, and the long-term deformation of the remoulded surrounding soil. Based on Xi'an Metro line 2, the soil behaviors and measured SS characteristics are deeply investigated. The upper and lower bounds of the total GP of the 15 cases are predicted. Comparison of the predicted SS troughs with field observations can show reasonable agreement. It is suggested that the new estimation method can be used effectively in estimating the SS induced by the shield tunneling method. Cette etude decrit une nouvelle methode modifiee de prevision de tassement de surface (SS) pour le metro de Xi'an. La methode d'estimation des SS et ses parametres caracteristiques, la perte de volume (VL), le SS maximale et la largeur du creux de tassement (STW) sont examines et discutes dans cet article. Le parametre de l'ecart (GP) est applique pour estimer VL, toutefois, la methode de calcul de GP et ses facteurs d'influence n'ont pas ete clarifies entierement. Dans cette etude, six facteurs d'influence sont introduits dans le nouveau modele GP et les solutions detaillees sont presentees. Cette methode d'estimation est capable de prendre en compte la pression de soutien de la tete de bouclier a la face du tunnel, la pression de soutien de la doublure autour du tunnel, l'effet de remplissage de la queue de jointoiement, les mouvements en lacet, en tangage de la machine de blindage et la deformation a long terme du sol environnant remanie. Base sur la ligne 2 du metro Xi'an, les comportements du sol et les caracteristiques mesurees de SS sont profondement etudies. Les limites superieures et inferieures du GP total des 15 cas sont prevues. Abstract

The brick-earth foundation of the Bell Tower in Xi'an, which has been preserved for about 600 years since the Ming Dynasty, has suffered from different degrees of infiltration and leakage from rainfall, caused by the ageing and cracking of the anti-seepage layer (cement mortar, lime soil and asphalt felt) on the top of the foundation and the loss of clay particles in the rammed soil. In order to address this problem, two common seepage control measures were evaluated by using laboratory tests and model tests, one by replacing the modified soil and the other by compacting the rammed earth. For the former, the shear strength, permeability, and microstructural properties of six types of modified soils were studied when using traditional modified soil for reclamation. Anti-seepage effects of modified soils were compared through four characteristic parameters such as maximum increment of volumetric water content, residual volumetric water content, the infiltration duration, average increment rate. Adding sticky rice juice, lime water and tung oil into the plain soil (PS) or tabia is an optimal option. For the latter, it is difficult to achieve a good anti-seepage effect only by increasing the density of rammed earth. 35. Seepage Mechanism Investigation for the Brick-Soil Foundation of the Xi'an Bell Tower.

Abstract

The Xi'an Bell Tower in Shaanxi Province, China, has been preserved for more than 600 years. However, due to the deterioration of brick and rammed earth in the bell tower foundation (BTF), the ancient building has suffered serious damages, such as seepage, efflorescence, peeling, and cracking. The seepage causes and mechanisms of the BTF are investigated in this work. The distribution of damages in the BTF is analyzed by on-site investigation, and the moisture filed of the BTF is monitored by in-situ tests and model tests under different types of rainfall and different compaction degree of rammed earth. The results show that: (1) The brick-soil structure within 3.0 m below the top of the BTF and 2.0 m above the bottom of the BTF is seriously affected by rainfall infiltration. (2) Heavy rainfall infiltration, aging of the top anti-seepage layer and the cracking of the side wall in the BTF are the main reasons for the water seepage. The irrigation water for the plantings has no influence on the BTF when the ground around the BTF is hardened. (3) The decreasing of the dry density (or increasing of the pore ratio) of the rammed earth is the second reason for the water seepage. When the dry density of the rammed earth is decreased by 10%, the depth of infiltration can be increased by 40%, and the wetting degree can be increased by 50%. Appropriately increasing the dry density of the rammed earth can effectively reduce the depth and impact of rainfall infiltration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

48. Mechanical response of Q2loess stratum surrounding a hydraulic tunnel under dry-wet cycles

Abstract

Understanding the mechanical response of Q2loess subjected to dry-wet cycles (DWCs) is the premise for the rational design of a hydraulic tunnel. Taking the Hanjiang-to-Weihe south line project in China as the research background, the microstructure evolution, strength degradation and compression characteristics of Q2loess under different DWCs were investigated, and the fluid-solid coupling analysis of the hydraulic tunnel was carried out using the FLAC3Dsoftware. The amplification effect of tunnel surrounding soil pressure (SSP) and its influence on the long-term stability of the tunnel under different DWCs were obtained. The results showed that the pore microstructure parameters of the undisturbed and remolded loess basically tend to be stable after the number of DWCs exceeds 3. The porosity of Q2loess is increased by 26%. The internal friction angle and cohesion of Q2loess are decreased by 35% and 31%, respectively. The vertical strain of Q2loess is increased by 55% after considering the DWCs. After the DWCs stabilized, the SSP ratio is increased between 10% and 25%. With the increase in buried depth of the tunnel, the SSP ratio is increased by 8%–10%. The SSP is reduced from 8% to 16% by the rise in groundwater level. As the number of DWCs increases and the burial depth of the tunnel decreases, the distribution of SSP becomes progressively more non-uniform. Based on the amplification factor and the modified compressive arch theory, the SSP distribution model of loess tunnel was proposed, which can be preliminarily applied to the design of supporting structures considering DWCs.
