Abstract

Toward hydrogen production from renewable sources, coreforming of dilute bioethanol (5 mol% ethanol) and methane using gliding arc discharge warm plasma is reported. For warm plasma alone, increases in methane to ethanol ratio and specific energy input lead to improving hydrogen yield, but low energy efficiency (<60%). The warm plasma coupled with Ni/CeO2/Al2O3 catalyst in a heat‐insulation reactor achieves an energy efficiency of 80%, but the large axial‐temperature drop of the catalyst bed causes low conversions. Therefore, additional heating is provided to maintain the catalyst bed temperature. Under optimal conditions, total carbon conversion of 97% and hydrogen yield of 78% are achieved with an energy cost of 1.16 kWh/Nm3 and energy efficiency of 85%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The plasma nitrogen fixation for NOx synthesis from N2 and O2 in MnOx/Al2O3 packed-bed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and an enhanced effect of MnOx/Al2O3 catalyst are reported. At N2 content of 50% and SEI of ~ 16 kJ/mol (flow rate of 800 SCCM and discharge power of ~ 9.5 W), NOx production rates are 0.28 SCCM for Al2O3 and 0.42 SCCM for MnOx/Al2O3, and improved by ~ 60% due to the enhanced effect of MnOx/Al2O3. The enhanced effect becomes more significant at lower specific energy input (SEI) or higher N2 content (lower O2 content). The MnOx/Al2O3-packed DBD features much more and lower-intensity micro-discharges, larger total capacitance, greater peak-to-peak charge, and higher vibrational temperature of N2 than the Al2O3-packed DBD. The surface role of MnOx/Al2O3 catalyst in the enhanced effect was disclosed by two-step surface reaction processes and in-situ temperature programed desorption for the adsorbed species of the first step. Abstract

Aiming at understanding the role of CH4/CO2 ratio on gliding arc (GA)‐based dry reforming of methane (GA‐DRM), the GA‐DRM at CH4/CO2 ratio range of 0.11 to 1 was studied with kinetics simulation. The radicals of H, OH, and CH3 are identified as the main reactive species to induce the reactant conversion and product formation in GA‐DRM. The increase of CH4/CO2 raises the concentrations of H and CH3 and reduces the OH concentration. Subsequently, the CH4/CO2 ratio regulates the main reaction routes of GA‐DRM. The dehydrogenation coupling reaction enhances with CH4/CO2 and thus raises the selectivities of C2 hydrocarbons. The OH‐induced reactions for OH to H2O weaken with CH4/CO2, thereby increasing the H2 selectivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
