1. Incidence of COVID-19 in Patients with Tumor During the Omicron Pandemic

Abstract

Objective To investigate the incidence of COVID-19 in patients with tumor during the pandemic of Omicron variant strains. Methods From December 25, 2022 to January 25, 2023, through the questionnaire star platform in the form of electronic questionnaire, we collected information about COVID-19 vaccine, COVID-19 infection and clinical symptoms, and post-infection anti-tumor therapy of patients with malignant tumors (including patients who previously visited the oncology department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital and the oncology department of the local hospital where the trainee doctors of the oncology department of Peking Union Medical College Hospital are located) during the survey period (from December 9, 2022 to the time of questionnaire survey) and performed statistical analysis. Results A total of 270 questionnaires were sent out, of which 265 valid questionnaires were recovered (the effective questionnaire rate was 98.1%). Among the 265 patients with malignant tumors, 170(64.2%) patients received COVID-19 vaccine, 158(59.6%) patients were alive with tumor, and 216 patients (81.5%) were receiving antitumor therapy at the time of COVID-19 infection or during the investigation. In 210 cases (79.2%), patients were infected with COVID-19. Among them, 9 cases (4.3%) developed COVID-19 pneumonia and 3 cases (1.4%) were hospitalized due to COVID-19, and there were no severe or fatal cases. Among the infected patients, 205(97.6%) patients showed symptoms related to the COVID-19, among which fever was the most common (72.9%) symptom, and cough (64.8%) and sputum (50.5%) were the main respiratory symptoms. There were no significant differences in gender, age, tumor type, whether they had underlying diseases, whether they were vaccinated against COVID-19, and whether they were treated with anti-tumor therapy between COVID-19 infected and uninfected patients (all P > 0.05). Among the infected patients, the incidence of pneumonia in those who received ≥3 doses of vaccine was significantly lower than that in those who did not receive vaccine (1.1% vs. 9.9%, P=0.025). At the time of questionnaire survey, 88 patients started antitumor therapy after COVID-19 infection. Compared to infection before COVID-19, 12 patients(13.6%) had more serious adverse anti-tumor reactions after COVID-19 infection, 63 patients (72.7%) had similar symptoms, and 12 patients (13.6%) had milder symptoms. There was no significant correlation between the adverse reactions of anti-tumor therapy before and after infection and the timing of initiation of anti-tumor therapy after infection(P=0.938), but there was a certain correlation with anti-tumor therapy after infection(P=0.003). Conclusions During the pandemic period of Omicron variant, tumor patients were generally susceptible to COVID-19. Almost all infected patients showed related clinical symptoms, but very few patients developed pneumonia. Vaccination with≥3 doses of vaccine may be protective against pneumonia. The adverse reactions of anti-tumor therapy in most cancer patients after infection with COVID-19 were not significantly worse than those before infection.

Abstract

Objective To quantify the setup errors for the different anatomical sites of patients who received intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) with linear accelerator on-board kilovolt fan beam CT(kV-FBCT) as non-isocenter IGRT and megavolt cone beam CT (MV-CBCT) as isocenter IGRT. Methods A retrospective analysis was performedon 70 patients who underwent radiotherapy, kV-FBCT, and/or MV-CBCT scans after each routine setup prior to IMRT. The average displacement (M), systematic error (Σ), and random error (б) at different treatment sites in the left-right, anterior-posterior, and cranial-caudal directions were calculated according to the individual displacements. The formula 2.5Σ+0.7б was used to estimate the PTV margin in respective direction. For each single patient, the root mean square in three directions was used as 3D displacement. Results A total of 1130 displacements were recorded in the 70 patients. The PTV margin was estimated to be 1.9-3.1 mm in head and neck cancer, 2.8-5.1 mm in thoracic cancer, 4.6-5.1 mm in breast cancer, 3.0-5.5 mm in upper abdominal cancer, and 3.5-6.8 mm in pelvic tumor. For the 3D mean displacements, the head and neck, thoracic, breast, upper abdominal, and pelvic cancer were 2.4±1.0, 4.0±1.6, 4.1±2.0, 4.6±2.1, and 4.6±2.1 mm, respectively. The average 3D displacement obtained by kV-FBCT and MV-CBCT were 4.1 and 3.4 mm, respectively (P=0.212). Conclusion The quantitative setup-error data can be obtained using linear accelerator on-board FBCT, and the non-isocenter IGRT induced set-up error cannot be negligible.

Abstract

Calcium carbide sludge is a kind of dense paste; when transported by pipeline, the pressure loss is enormous. However, how to calculate the pressure loss accurately has not been solved until now. This article aims to present a new method to build a pressure loss calculation model based on the experimental data of pipeline transportation. To determine the relationship between the pressure loss and the properties of calcium carbide sludge, a new circulating pipeline testing apparatus was designed. The test studied pressure losses arising from changes in the mass concentration of the paste, flow velocity, pipe diameter, and pipe length. Analyzing the obtained data by means of nonlinear curve fitting, the adsorption coefficient and viscosity coefficient were defined and then the calculation formula was deduced. Finally, the calculation formula was verified for a project pipeline with a relatively large diameter equal to φ200 mm and the same parameters as those of industrial applications. The results show that under the appropriate conditions of applying the model, the relative error is less than 20%, so the model can be applied to engineering pressure loss estimation. This method provides a suitable pipe transportation calculation method for dense paste, combining experimental data and theoretical derivation.

15. Reconstruction of Point Events in Liquid-Scintillator Detectors Subjected to Total Reflection

Abstract

The outer water buffer is an economic option to shield the external radiative backgrounds for liquid-scintillator neutrino detectors. However, the consequential total reflection of scintillation light at the media boundary introduces extra complexity to the detector optics. This paper develops a precise detector-response model by investigating how total reflection complicates photon propagation and degrades reconstruction. We first parameterize the detector response by regression, providing an unbiased energy and vertex reconstruction in the total reflection region while keeping the number of parameters under control. From the experience of event degeneracy at the Jinping prototype, we then identify the root cause as the multimodality in the reconstruction likelihood function, determined by the refractive index of the buffer, detector scale and PMT coverage. To avoid multimodality, we propose a straightforward criterion based on the expected photo-electron-count ratios between neighboring PMTs. The criterion will be used to ensure success in future liquid-scintillator detectors by guaranteeing the effectiveness of event reconstruction.

Abstract

The sampling effect of the imaging acquisition device is long considered to be a modulation process of the input signal, introducing additional error into the signal acquisition process. This paper proposes a correction algorithm for the modulation process that solves the sampling effect with high accuracy. We examine the algorithm with perfect continuous Gaussian images and selected digitized images, which indicate an accuracy increase of 106 for Gaussian images, 102 at 15 times of Shannon interpolation for digitized images, and 105 at 101 times of Shannon interpolation for digitized images. The accuracy limit of the Gaussian image comes from the truncation error, while the accuracy limit of the digitized images comes from their finite resolution, which can be improved by increasing the time of Shannon interpolation., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Field distortion is widespread in imaging systems. If it cannot be measured and corrected well, it will affect the accuracy of photogrammetry. To this end, we proposed a general field distortion model based on Fredholm integration, which uses a reconstructed high-resolution reference point spread function (PSF) and two sets of 4-variable polynomials to describe an imaging system. The model includes the point-to-point positional distortion from the object space to the image space and the deformation of the PSF so that we can measure an actual field distortion with arbitrary accuracy. We also derived the formula required for correcting the sampling effect of the image sensor. Through numerical simulation, we verify the effectiveness of the model and reconstruction algorithm. 38. A Direct Slip Ratio Estimation Method based on an Intelligent Tire and Machine Learning

Abstract

Accurate estimation of the tire slip ratio is critical for vehicle safety, as it is necessary for vehicle control purposes. In this paper, an intelligent tire system is presented to develop a novel slip ratio estimation model using machine learning algorithms. The accelerations, generated by a triaxial accelerometer installed onto the inner liner of the tire, are varied when the tire rotates to update the contact patch. Meanwhile, the slip ratio reference value can be measured by the MTS Flat-Trac tire test platform. Then, by analyzing the variation between the accelerations and slip ratio, highly useful features are discovered, which are especially promising for assessing vertical acceleration. For these features, machine learning (ML) algorithms are trained to build the slip ratio estimation model, in which the ML algorithms include artificial neural networks (ANNs), gradient boosting machines (GBMs), random forests (RFs), and support vector machines (SVMs). Finally, the estimated NRMS errors are evaluated using 10-fold cross-validation (CV). The proposed estimation model is able to estimate the slip ratio continuously and stably using only the acceleration from the intelligent tire system, and the estimated slip ratio range can reach 30%. The estimation results have high robustness to vehicle velocity and load, where the best NRMS errors can reach 4.88%. In summary, the present study with the fusion of an intelligent tire system and machine learning paves the way for the accurate estimation of the tire slip ratio under different driving conditions, which create new opportunities for autonomous vehicles, intelligent tires, and tire slip ratio estimation., Comment: 12 pages, 25 figures, 2 tables

Abstract

A black hole X-ray binary produces hard X-ray radiation from its corona and disk when the accreting matter heats up. During an outburst, the disk and corona co-evolves with each other. However, such an evolution is still unclear in both its geometry and dynamics. Here we report the unusual decrease of the reflection fraction in MAXI J1820+070, which is the ratio of the coronal intensity illuminating the disk to the coronal intensity reaching the observer, as the corona is observed to contrast during the decay phase. We postulate a jet-like corona model, in which the corona can be understood as a standing shock where the material flowing through. In this dynamical scenario, the decrease of the reflection fraction is a signature of the corona's bulk velocity.
