Enhancing absorption in optically thin semiconductors is the key in the development of high-performance optical and optoelectronic devices. In this paper, we resort to the concept of degenerate critical coupling and design an ultra-thin semiconductor absorber composed of free-standing GaAs nanocylinder metasurfaces in the near infrared. The numerical results show that perfect absorption can be achieved through overlapping two Mie modes with opposite symmetry, with each mode contributing a theoretical maximum of 50% in their respective critical coupling state. The absorption also shows the polarization-independent and angle-insensitive robustness. This work, together with the design concept, opens up great opportunities for the realization of high-efficiency metasurface devices, including optical emitters, modulators, detectors, and sensors.

The research of two-dimensional (2D) materials with atomic-scale thicknesses and unique optical properties has become a frontier in photonics and electronics. Borophene, a newly reported 2D material provides a novel building block for nanoscale materials and devices. We present a simple borophene-based absorption structure to boost the light-borophene interaction via critical coupling in the visible wavelengths. The proposed structure consists of borophene monolayer deposited on a photonic crystal slab backed with a metallic mirror. The numerical simulations and theoretical analysis show that the light absorption of the structure can be remarkably enhanced as high as 99.80% via critical coupling mechanism with guided resonance, and the polarization-dependent absorption behaviors are demonstrated due to the strong anisotropy of borophene. We also examine the tunability of the absorption behaviors by adjusting carrier density and lifetime of borophene, air hole radius in the slab, the incident angle and polarization angle. The proposed absorption structure provides novel access to the flexible and effective manipulation of light-borophene interactions in the visible, and shows a good prospect for the future borophene-based electronic and photonic devices., Comment: The coordinate values in Fig.1(c) and (d) on page 3 have been corrected

Enhanced optical absorption in two-dimensional (2D) materials has recently moved into the focus of nanophotonics research. In this work, we present a gain-assisted method to achieve critical coupling and demonstrate the maximum absorption in undoped monolayer graphene in the near-infrared. In a two-port system composed of photonic crystal slab loaded with graphene, the gain medium is introduced to adjust the dissipative rate to match the radiation rate for the critical coupling, which is accessible without changing the original structural geometry. The appropriate tuning of the gain coefficient also enables the critical coupling absorption within a wide wavelength regime for different coupling configurations. This work provides a powerful guide to manipulate light-matter interaction in 2D materials and opens up a new path to design ultra-compact and high-performance 2D material optical devices.

Enhancing the light-matter interaction in two-dimensional (2D) materials with high-$Q$ resonances in photonic structures has boosted the development of optical and photonic devices. Herein, we intend to build a bridge between the radiation engineering and the bound states in the continuum (BIC), and present a general method to control light absorption at critical coupling through the quasi-BIC resonance. In a single-mode two-port system composed of graphene coupled with silicon nanodisk metasurfaces, the maximum absorption of 0.5 can be achieved when the radiation rate of the magnetic dipole resonance equals to the dissipate loss rate of graphene. Furthermore, the absorption bandwidth can be adjusted more than two orders of magnitude from 0.9 nm to 94 nm by simultaneously changing the asymmetric parameter of metasurfaces, the Fermi level and the layer number of graphene. This work reveals out the essential role of BIC in radiation engineering and provides promising strategies in controlling light absorption of 2D materials for the next-generation optical and photonic devices, e.g., light emitters, detectors, modulators, and sensors.

Recent progress in nanophotonics is driven by the desire to engineer light-matter interaction in two-dimensional (2D) materials using high-quality resonances in plasmonic and dielectric structures. Here, we demonstrate a link between the radiation control at critical coupling and the metasurface-based bound states in the continuum (BIC) physics, and develop a generalized theory to engineer light absorption of 2D materials in coupling resonance metasurfaces. In a typical example of hybrid graphene-dielectric metasurfaces, we present the manipulation of absorption bandwidth by more than one order of magnitude by simultaneously adjusting the asymmetry parameter of silicon resonators governed by BIC and the graphene surface conductivity while the absorption efficiency maintains maximum. This work reveals the generalized role of BIC in the radiation control at critical coupling and provides promising strategies in engineering light absorption of 2D materials for high-efficiency optoelectronics device applications, e.g., light emission, detection and modulation.

Fano resonance has raised great attention in nanophotonics attributing to its unique properties.In this work, we study the imaging function of Fano-resonant silicon metasurfece governed by quasi-bound states in the continuum (BICs). First, by breaking the in-plane symmetry of nanodisks, a symmetry-protected quasi-BIC is excited with the emergence of a sharp Fano resonance. The near field distributions, multipole contributions and radiation patterns of the metasurface are performed to uncover the mechanism and characteristics of this resonance. In addition, we investigate the imaging function of this Fano-resonant metasurface assisted by phase-change material Ge_2Sb_2Te_5(GST). Through selective modification of different units from a-GST to c-GST, the produced transmitted image well reconstructs the target letter. Resonant metasurfaces have received extensive attention due to their sharp spectral feature and extraordinary field enhancement. In this work, by breaking the in-plane symmetry of silicon nanopillars, we achieve a sharp Fano resonance. The far-field radiation and near-field distribution of metasurfaces are calculated and analyzed to further uncover the resonant performance of metasurfaces. Moreover, the theoretical derivation and simulation exhibit an inverse quadratic dependence of Q-factors on asymmetry parameters, revealing that the resonance is governed by the symmetry-protected bound states in the continuum. Finally we experimentally demonstrate the sharp resonance, and employ it to effciently boost the third-harmonic generation. This enhancement can be attributed to the strong optical intensity enhancement inside the metasurface.

We present a monolayer black phosphorus (BP)-based metamaterial structure for tunable anisotropic absorption in the mid-infrared. Based on the critical coupling mechanism of guided resonance, the structure realizes the high absorption efficiency of 99.65$\%$ for TM polarization, while only 2.61$\%$ at the same wavelength for TE polarization due to the intrinsic anisotropy of BP. The absorption characteristics can be flexibly controlled by changing critical coupling conditions, including the electron doping of BP, geometric parameters and incident angles of light. The results show feasibility in designing high-performance BP-based optoelectronic devices with spectral tunability and polarization selectivity.

Black phosphorus (BP), an emerging two-dimensional (2D) material with intriguing optical properties, forms a promising building block in optics and photonics devices. In this work, we propose a simple structure composed of BP sandwiched by polymer and dielectric materials with low index contrast, and numerically demonstrate the perfect absorption mechanism via the critical coupling of guided resonances in the mid-infrared. Due to the inherent in-plane anisotropic feature of BP, the proposed structure exhibits highly polarization-dependent absorption characteristics, i.e., the optical absorption of the structure reaches 99.9$\%$ for TM polarization and only 3.2$\%$ for TE polarization at the same wavelength. Furthermore, the absorption peak and resonance wavelength can be flexibly tuned by adjusting the electron doping of BP, the geometrical parameters of the structure and the incident angles of light. With high efficiency absorption, the remarkable anisotropy, flexible tunability and easy-to-fabricate advantages, the proposed structure shows promising prospects in the design of polarization-selective and tunable high-performance devices in the mid-infrared, such as polarizers, modulators and photodetectors.

The active photonics based on the two-dimensional material graphene has attracted enormous interests for developing the tunable and compact optical devices with high efficiency. Here we integrate graphene into the Fano-resonant all-dielectric metasurfaces consisting of silicon split resonators, and systematically investigate the strong interaction between graphene and the highly localized hot inside feed gaps in the near infrared regime. The numerical results show that the integrated graphene can substantially reduce the Fano resonance due to the coupling effect between the intrinsic absorption of graphene with enhanced electric field in the localized hotspot. With the manipulation of the surface conductivity via varying Fermi level and the layer number of graphene, the Fano resonance strength obtains a significant modulation and is even switched off. This works provides a great degree of freedom to tailor light-matter interaction at the nanoscale and opens up the avenues for actively tunable and integrated nanophotonic device applications, such as the optical biosensing, slow light and enhanced nonlinear effects.

Electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) analogue in all-dielectric metamaterials with a high quality factor provides an effective route to enhance light-matter interaction at the nanoscale. In particular, the active control applied to it enables great degree of freedom for spatial light modulation and thus promises functional device applications with high flexible tunability. Here we load graphene into all-dielectric metamaterials and realize the remarkably high modulation depth in the transmission amplitude of the EIT resonance with the manipulation of graphene conductivity, via shifting the Fermi level or altering the layer number. The physical origin lies in the controllable light absorption through the interband loss of graphene in the near infrared. This work reveals a strategically important interaction mechanism between graphene and EIT resonance in all-dielectric metamaterials, and open avenues in designing a family of hybrid metadevices that permit promising applications to light modulation, switching and ultrasensitive biosensing.

We theoretically investigate the interaction between the conductive graphene layer with the dual-spectral electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) metamaterial and achieve independent amplitude modulation of the transmission peaks in terahertz (THz) regime. The dual-spectral EIT resonance results from the strong near field coupling effects between the bright cut wire resonator (CWR) in the middle and two dark double-split ring resonators (DSRRs) on the two sides. By integrating monolayer graphene under the dark mode resonators, the two transmission peaks of the EIT resonance can exhibit independent amplitude modulation via shifting the Fermi level of the corresponding graphene layer. The physical mechanism of the modulation can be attributed to the variation of damping factors of the dark mode resonators arising from the tunable conductivity of graphene. This work shows great prospects in designing multiple-spectral THz functional devices with highly flexible tunability and implies promising applications in multi-channel selective switching, modulation and slow light.

We theoretically and numerically demonstrate an actively tunable slow light in a hybrid metal-graphene metamaterial in the terahertz (THz) regime. In the unit cell, the near field coupling between the metallic elements including the bright cut wire resonator and the dark double split-ring resonator gives rises to a pronounced transmission peak. By positioning a monolayer graphene under the dark mode resonator, an active modulation of the near field coupling is achieved via shifting the Fermi level of graphene. The physical origin can be attributed to the variation in the damping rate of the dark mode resonator arising from the conductive effect of graphene. Accompanied with the actively tunable near filed coupling effect is the dynamically controllable phase dispersion, allowing for the highly tunable slow light effect. This work offers an alternative way to design compact slow light devices in the THz regime for future optical signal processing applications.

Black phosphorus (BP) as a promising two-dimensional material with extraordinary optical properties constitutes an excellent building block in multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials. In this work, we design a multilayer structure composed of BP/dielectric layer stacking unit cells patterned on a gold mirror and theoretically demonstrate the tunable anisotropic absorption in the infrared regime. The electric dipole resonance between the adjacent unit cells drives the structure in the critical coupling state, and impedance of the structure matches to that of free space, showing the perfect absorption for one polarization direction, while the impedance mismatch for the other polarization direction leads to only 8.2$\%$ absorption at the same wavelength. The anisotropic absorption response of the proposed structure can be attributed to the intrinsic anisotropy of BP, which exhibits few dependence on the incident angle. Furthermore, we investigate the tunable optical absorption of the proposed structure with the electron doping of BP and the geometric parameters. These results demonstrate great potentials of BP in constituting multilayer hyperbolic metamaterials, and open up avenues in designing anisotropic metadevices with tunable spectral and polarization selectivity in the infrared regime.

Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) has been intensively investigated and widely exploited to trap the incident light and enhance absorption in the optoelectronic devices. The availability of graphene as a plasmonic material with strong half-metallicity and continuously tunable surface conductivity makes it promising to dynamically modulate the absorption enhancement with graphene-based metamaterials. Here we numerically demonstrate tunable light trapping and absorption enhancement can be realized with graphene-based complementary metamaterials. Furthermore, we also explore the polarization sensitivity in the proposed device, in which case either TM or TE plane wave at the specific wavelength can be efficiently absorbed by simply manipulating the Fermi energy of graphene. Therefore, this work can find potential applications in the next generation of photodetectors with tunable spectral and polarization selectivity in the mid-infrared and terahertz (THz) regimes.
