5. G-TADOC: Enabling Efficient GPU-Based Text Analytics without Decompression

Abstract

Text analytics directly on compression (TADOC) has proven to be a promising technology for big data analytics. GPUs are extremely popular accelerators for data analytics systems. Unfortunately, no work so far shows how to utilize GPUs to accelerate TADOC. We describe G-TADOC, the first framework that provides GPU-based text analytics directly on compression, effectively enabling efficient text analytics on GPUs without decompressing the input data. G-TADOC solves three major challenges. First, TADOC involves a large amount of dependencies, which makes it difficult to exploit massive parallelism on a GPU. We develop a novel fine-grained thread-level workload scheduling strategy for GPU threads, which partitions heavily-dependent loads adaptively in a fine-grained manner. Second, in developing G-TADOC, thousands of GPU threads writing to the same result buffer leads to inconsistency while directly using locks and atomic operations lead to large synchronization overheads. We develop a memory pool with thread-safe data structures on GPUs to handle such difficulties. Third, maintaining the sequence information among words is essential for lossless compression. We design a sequence-support strategy, which maintains high GPU parallelism while ensuring sequence information. 30. Fullerene on non-iron cluster-matrix co-catalysts promotes collaborative H2and N2activation for ammonia synthesis

Abstract

Developing highly effective catalysts for ammonia (NH3) synthesis is a challenging task. Even the current, prevalent iron-derived catalysts used for industrial NH3synthesis require harsh reaction conditions and involve massive energy consumption. Here we show that anchoring buckminsterfullerene (C60) onto non-iron transition metals yields cluster-matrix co-catalysts that are highly efficient for NH3synthesis. Such co-catalysts feature separate catalytic active sites for hydrogen and nitrogen. The ‘electron buffer’ behaviour of C60balances the electron density at catalytic transition metal sites and enables the synergistic activation of nitrogen on transition metals in addition to the activation and migration of hydrogen on C60sites. As demonstrated in long-term, continuous runs, the C60-promoting transition metal co-catalysts exhibit higher NH3synthesis rates than catalysts without C60. With the involvement of C60, the rate-determining step in the cluster-matrix co-catalysis is found to be the hydrogenation of *NH2. C60incorporation exemplifies a practical approach for solving hydrogen poisoning on a wide variety of oxide-supported Ru catalysts.

Abstract

Ammonia (NH3) synthesis with hydrogen (H2) produced from renewable energy is a promising route to reduce carbon footprints and the dependence on fossil fuels. However, the development of highly efficient and stable catalyst for NH3synthesis under mild conditions is a challenge. Herein, a series of boron nitride (BN)-supported Ru catalysts were synthesized, and the NH3synthesis rate was enhanced significantly after the introduce of Ce. The developed RuCe2.4/BN catalyst with a Ce/Ru molar ratio of 2.4 exhibited the optimal NH3synthesis rate of 14.6 mmolNH3gcat−1h−1at 400 °C and 1.0 MPa, which was ∼21-fold that of the catalyst prepared without Ce. In situdiffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy of CO adsorption and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy coupled with electron energy loss spectroscopy revealed that the d–d electronic interaction between Ru and CeO2can be differentially adjusted by a change in the Ce/Ru molar ratio. An appropriate amount of Ce could enhance the electronic interaction between the CeOyoverlayer and Ru entities. Also, the CeOyoverlayer acted as an “electron shuttle” and enhanced the charge transfer from Ce to the surface of Ru atoms. Finally, electron donation occurred from the surface abundancy of Ru atoms to N2molecule through a d–π* interaction. Moreover, the introduction of excessive Ce could block Ru active sites, weaken the electron transfer and, therefore, decrease the NH3synthesis rate.

49. Effects of cerium and tungsten addition on acid–base properties of spindle-like α-Fe2O3in low-temperature SCR of NOxwith NH3

Abstract

Low-temperature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is important for the elimination of NOxfrom stationary sources. In the present study, the loading of Ce and W on α-Fe2O3was achieved through the integration of single-mode microwave and incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) methods. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images reveal that the structure of α-Fe2O3is spindle-like, and the structure remains unchanged after the introduction of Ce and/or W. The results of NH3-SCR investigation demonstrate that NOxconversion over Ce–W/α-Fe2O3is more than 85% at 300 °C, which is much higher than that over Ce/α-Fe2O3and α-Fe2O3. Our studies illustrate that the addition of Ce can significantly increase the amount of surface oxygen vacancies as well as sites of moderate basicity. On the other hand, the addition of W can obviously decrease the amount of basic sites and increase the number of Brønsted acid sites. The synergistic effect of Ce and W addition on balancing acidity/basicity properties accounts for the high activity of Ce20W10/α-Fe2O3for NOxremoval at low temperatures. The study provides insight into the relationship between acidity/basicity properties and catalytic performance of Ce–W/α-Fe2O3catalysts, which is beneficial to the design of high-performance NH3-SCR catalyst for NOxremoval at low temperatures.
