Abstract

The data are the polarized FTIR spectra of the article entitled "CO2-induced a small water solubility in orthopyroxene and its implications for water storage in the upper mantle". To investigate the water solubility of orthopyroxene as functions of water fugacity, temperature, and pressure, single crystalline orthopyroxene was sintered in coexisting with H2O-CO2 fluids in a closed system under high P-T conditions. After quenching the experiments, we measured the polarized FTIR spectra of the recovered samples at ambient conditions. The water content of orthopyroxene, an anisotropic mineral, can be determined from the polarized spectra of three random (x, y, z) but orthogonal sections of the crystal. The total thickness-normalized integral absorbance (Abstot) can be expressed as: Abstot = Absx + Absy + Absz with Absx = (Absmax,x + Absmin,x) / 2 , Absy = (Absmax,y + Absmin,y) / 2 , and Absz = (Absmax,z + Absmin,z) / 2 . The water content (Cw, in ppm) can be determined by the Beer–Lambert law, Cw = Abstot / I, where Absmax and Absmin represent the maximum and minimum values on each axis, I is the mineral-specific integral molar absorption coefficient (ppm−1·cm−2). &nbsp

31. CO2Induced a Small Water Solubility in Orthopyroxene and Its Implications for Water Storage in the Upper Mantle

Abstract

To investigate the effect of CO2on water solubility in orthopyroxene coexisting with H2O‐CO2as a buffering fluid, high‐pressure experiments were conducted at pressures of 1.5 and 3 GPa and a temperature of 1100 °C. The experiments were performed in a Walker‐type multianvil assembly using natural orthopyroxene with various CO2to CO2‐H2O molar ratios as a starting material. The water contents were measured by polarized Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. At 1.5 GPa and 1100 °C, the H2O solubility decreased with increasing CO2content in the fluid. The water solubility c(H2O) could be quantitatively determined based on water fugacity f(H2O) as c(H2O) = 25.21 × f(H2O)1.24. The addition of 57% CO2dramatically reduced the water solubility in orthopyroxene from 184 to 90 ppm. In contrast, at 3 GPa and 1100 °C, the water solubility did not change with the CO2content in the starting material because CO2is unstable in bulk peridotite due to the reaction between CO2and olivine at pressures exceeding 2.2 GPa. This study confirms that the additional component in the aqueous fluid can change the water activity and fugacity, thereby directly lowering the water storage capacity in mantle minerals. As a result, previous estimates of the maximum water storage capacity in the shallow mantle may be overestimated by a factor of 3. 33. Orally administered Bi 2 S 3 @SiO 2 core-shell nanomaterials as gastrointestinal contrast agents and their influence on gut microbiota.

Abstract

Effective and safe contrast agents for X-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract are quite desirable for realizing high diagnostic accuracy and low toxicity in the clinic. Herein, we synthesize a series of silica-coated bismuth sulfide core-shell nanomaterials (Bi 2 S 3 @SiO 2 ) of various sizes and systematically study their GI CT contrast performance and potential toxic effects in comparison with those of barium sulfate (BaSO 4 ) in mice. The in vivo experimental results suggest that these Bi 2 S 3 @SiO 2 core-shell nanomaterials display superior CT contrast performance and higher elimination efficacy than BaSO 4 by single-dose exposure manner (10 ​mg/kg Bi element/b.w. for Bi 2 S 3 @SiO 2 versus 30 ​mg/kg Ba element/b.w. for BaSO 4 ). Furthermore, 28 days after exposure, Bi 2 S 3 @SiO 2 core-shell nanomaterials show minimal toxic effects in vivo and nonsignificant influences on the structure and function of the gut microbiota in mice.
