4. Formation of Nanodiamonds during Pyrolysis of Butanosolv Lignin

Abstract

The preparation of artificial diamonds has a long history driven by decreased costs compared to naturally occurring diamonds and ethical issues. However, fabrication of diamonds in the laboratory from readily available biomass has not been extensively investigated. This work demonstrates a convenient method for producing nanodiamonds from biopolymer lignin at ambient pressure. Lignin was extracted from Douglas Fir sawdust using a butanosolv pretreatment and was pyrolyzed in N2at 1000 °C, followed by a second thermal treatment in 5% H2/Ar at 1050 °C, both at ambient pressure. This led to the formation of nanodiamonds embedded in an amorphous carbon substrate. The changes occurring at various stages of the pyrolysis process were monitored by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. High resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed that nanodiamond crystallites, 4 nm in diameter on average, formed via multiple nucleation events in some carbon-containing high density spheres. It is proposed that highly defected graphene-like flakes form during the pyrolysis of lignin as an intermediate phase. These flakes are more deformable with more localized π electrons in comparison with graphene and join together face-to-face in different manners to form cubic or hexagonal nanodiamonds. This proposed mechanism for the formation of nanodiamonds is relevant to the future fabrication of diamonds from biomass under relatively mild conditions.

Abstract

Bulk quantities of graphene nanosheets and nanodots have been selectively fabricated by mechanical grinding exfoliation of natural graphite in a small quantity of ionic liquids. The resulting graphene sheets and dots are solvent free with low levels of naturally absorbed oxygen, inherited from the starting graphite. The sheets are only two to five layers thick. Abstract

The fullerene (C60) nanowires, which possess a highly unusual morphology featured by a prism-like central core and three nanobelt-like wings joined along the growth direction to give an overall Y-shaped cross section, have been studied. The experimental observation coupled with theoretical calculation have enabled us to elucidate both the role of the fullerene and of the solvent in the crystallization process, thus opening up an opportunity for the in-depth understanding of the crystal growth mechanism. More generally, the method developed in this work could be extended into understanding the growth of other inorganic nanowires that have both host and guest molecules involved in their crystal lattices., Comment: 25 pages, 9 figures

Abstract

Topotactic solution synthesis yields nanostructured tin chalcogenides, SnS1–xSex with controllable composition; spark plasma sintered SnS0.1Se0.9 achieves ZT ≈ 1.16 at 923 K via microstructural texture tuning., Anion exchange has been performed with nanoplates of tin sulfide (SnS) via “soft chemical” organic-free solution syntheses to yield layered pseudo-ternary tin chalcogenides on a 10 g-scale. SnS undergoes a topotactic transformation to form a series of S-substituted tin selenide (SnSe) nano/micro-plates with tuneable chalcogenide composition. SnS0.1Se0.9 nanoplates were spark plasma sintered into phase-pure, textured, dense pellets, the ZT of which has been significantly enhanced to ≈1.16 from ≈0.74 at 923 K via microstructure texturing control. These approaches provide versatile, scalable and low-cost routes to p-type layered tin chalcogenides with controllable composition and competitive thermoelectric performance.
