Using the B$\rho$-defined isochronous mass spectrometry technique, we report the first determination of the $^{23}$Si, $^{26}$P, $^{27}$S, and $^{31}$Ar masses and improve the precision of the $^{28}$S mass by a factor of 11. Our measurements confirm that these isotopes are bound and fix the location of the proton dripline in P, S, and Ar. We find that the mirror energy differences of the mirror-nuclei pairs $^{26}$P-$^{26}$Na, $^{27}$P-$^{27}$Mg, $^{27}$S-$^{27}$Na, $^{28}$S-$^{28}$Mg, and $^{31}$Ar-$^{31}$Al deviate significantly from the values predicted assuming mirror symmetry. In addition, we observe similar anomalies in the excited states, but not in the ground states, of the mirror-nuclei pairs $^{22}$Al-$^{22}$F and $^{23}$Al-$^{23}$Ne. Using $ab~ initio$ VS-IMSRG and mean field calculations, we show that such a mirror-symmetry breaking phenomeon can be explained by the extended charge distributions of weakly-bound, proton-rich nuclei. When observed, this phenomenon serves as a unique signature that can be valuable for identifying proton-halo candidates.

The recent, impressive advances in algorithmic generation of high-fidelity image, audio, and video are largely due to great successes in score-based diffusion models. A key implementing step is score matching, that is, the estimation of the score function of the forward diffusion process from training data. As shown in earlier literature, the total variation distance between the law of a sample generated from the trained diffusion model and the ground truth distribution can be controlled by the score matching risk. Despite the widespread use of score-based diffusion models, basic theoretical questions concerning exact optimal statistical rates for score estimation and its application to density estimation remain open. We establish the sharp minimax rate of score estimation for smooth, compactly supported densities. Formally, given \(n\) i.i.d. samples from an unknown \(\alpha\)-H\"{o}lder density \(f\) supported on \([-1, 1]\), we prove the minimax rate of estimating the score function of the diffused distribution \(f * \mathcal{N}(0, t)\) with respect to the score matching loss is \(\frac{1}{nt^2} \wedge \frac{1}{nt^{3/2}} \wedge (t^{\alpha-1} + n^{-2(\alpha-1)/(2\alpha+1)})\) for all \(\alpha > 0\) and \(t \ge 0\). As a consequence, it is shown the law \(\hat{f}\) of a sample generated from the diffusion model achieves the sharp minimax rate \(\bE(\dTV(\hat{f}, f)^2) \lesssim n^{-2\alpha/(2\alpha+1)}\) for all \(\alpha > 0\) without any extraneous logarithmic terms which are prevalent in the literature, and without the need for early stopping which has been required for all existing procedures to the best of our knowledge., Comment: 71 pages

MHD coronal models are critical in the Sun-to-Earth model chain and the most complex and computationally intensive component, particularly the time-evolving coronal models, typically driven by a series of time-evolving photospheric magnetograms. There is an urgent need to develop efficient and reliable time-evolving MHD coronal models to further improve our ability to predict space weather. COCONUT is a rapidly developing MHD coronal model. Adopting the efficient implicit algorithm makes it suitable for performing computationally intensive time-evolving coronal simulations. This paper aims to extend COCONUT to an efficient time-evolving MHD coronal model. In this MHD model, as usual, an implicit temporal integration algorithm is adopted to avoid the CFL stability restriction and increase computational efficiency by large time steps. The Newton iteration method is applied within each time step to enhance the temporal accuracy. The unstructured geodesic mesh is used for flexibility in mesh division and to avoid degeneracy at the poles. Furthermore, an HLL Riemann solver with a self-adjustable dissipation term accommodates both low- and high-speed flows. A series of time-evolving photospheric magnetograms are utilized to drive the evolution of coronal structures from the solar surface to 25Rs during two Carrington rotations (CRs) around the 2019 eclipse in an inertial coordinate system. It shows that COCONUT can mimic the coronal evolution during a full CR within 9 hours (1080 CPU cores, 1.5M cells). We also compare the simulation results of time-evolving versus quasi-steady-state coronal simulations in the thermodynamic MHD model to validate the time-evolving approach. Additionally, we evaluate the effect of time steps on the simulation results to find an optimal time step that simultaneously maintains high efficiency and necessary numerical stability and accuracy., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures

Nuclear mass measurements have recently been extended conspicuously to proton-rich region in the upper $fp$ shell. The new data are utilized to study isospin symmetry breaking phenomena}using Coulomb displacement energy (CDE) and triplet displacement energy (TDE) as probes. The new mass data, either measured for the first time or with greatly improved accuracy, removed several previously found ``anomalies" in the systematical behavior in the $fp$ shell. Remarkably, more regular odd-even staggering patterns can be established in both CDE and TDE, calling for a uniform explanation in terms of isospin-nonconserving (INC) forces across the $sd$, $f_{7/2}$, and upper $fp$ shells. By extending the large-scale shell-model calculation [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{110}, 172505 (2013)] to the upper $fp$-shell region, we found that, in order to describe the new data, the same INC force is required as previously used for the $f_{7/2}$ shell. Especially, we propose the $T=1$ TDE for those triplet nuclei, that have $pp$, $nn$, and $pn$ pairs on top of a common even-even $N=Z$ core, to be a good indicator for the isotensor component of isospin violating interactions, which is estimated here to be 150 keV., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

Among the 3d transition metal ions doped polar Ni3TeO6, Mn-doped Ni3TeO6 has stimulated great interest due to its high magnetic ordering temperature and complex magnetic phases, but the mechanism of magnetoelectric (ME) coupling is far from understood. Herein we report our systematic investigation of the chemical control of magnetism, metamagnetic transition, and ME properties of Ni3-xMnxTeO6 single crystals in high magnetic field (H) up to 52 T. We present a previously unreported weak ferromagnetic behavior appeared in the ab plane below 9.5 K in addition to the incommensurate helical and commensurate collinear antiferromagnetic states. In the low-field region, a spin-flop type metamagnetic transition without any hysteresis occurs at Hc1 for H // c, while another metamagnetic transition accompanied with a change in electric polarization is observed at Hc2 in the high-field region both for H // c and H // ab above 30 K, which can be attributed to the sudden rotation of magnetic moments at Ni2 sites. The ME measurements reveal that a first-order ME effect is observed in the low-T and low-H regions, while a second-order ME coupling term appears above 30 K in the magnetic field range of Hc1 < H < Hc2 for H // c and H < Hc2 for H // ab, both becoming significant with increasing temperature. Eventually, they are dominated by the second-order ME effect near the antiferromagnetic transition temperature. The present work demonstrates that Ni3-xMnxTeO6 is an exotic magnetoelectric material compared with Ni3TeO6 and its derivatives, thereby providing insights to better understand the magnetism and ME coupling in Ni3TeO6 and its derivatives., Comment: 30 pages with 8 figures

The van der Waals (vdW) layered multiferroics, which host simultaneous ferroelectric and magnetic orders, have attracted attention not only for their potentials to be utilized in nanoelectric devices and spintronics, but also offer alternative opportunities for emergent physical phenomena. To date, the vdW layered multiferroic materials are still very rare. In this work, we have investigated the magnetic structure and magnetoelectric effects in Co5(TeO3)4Cl2, a promising new multiferroic compound with antiferromagnetic (AFM) Neel point TN = 18 K. The neutron powder diffraction reveals the non-coplanar AFM state with preferred Neel vector along the c-axis, while a spin re-orientation occurring between 8 K and 15 K is identified, which results from the distinct temperature dependence of the non-equivalent Co sites moment in Co5(TeO3)4Cl2. What is more, it is found that Co5(TeO3)4Cl2 is one of the best vdW multiferroics studied so far in terms of the multiferroic performance. The measured linear ME coefficient exhibits the emergent oscillation dependence of the angle between magnetic field and electric field, and the maximal value is as big as 45 ps/m. It is suggested that Co5(TeO3)4Cl2 is an appreciated platform for exploring the emergent multiferroicity in vdW layered compounds., Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures

We study gradient flow on the exponential loss for a classification problem with a one-layer softmax attention model, where the key and query weight matrices are trained separately. Under a separability assumption on the data, we show that when gradient flow achieves the minimal loss value, it further implicitly minimizes the nuclear norm of the product of the key and query weight matrices. Such implicit regularization can be described by a Support Vector Machine (SVM) problem with respect to the attention weights. This finding contrasts with prior results showing that the gradient descent induces an implicit regularization on the Frobenius norm on the product weight matrix when the key and query matrices are combined into a single weight matrix for training. For diagonal key and query matrices, our analysis builds upon the reparameterization technique and exploits approximate KKT conditions of the SVM associated with the classification data. Moreover, the results are extended to general weights configurations given proper alignment of the weight matrices' singular spaces with the data features at initialization., Comment: 34 pages

Proton-$^{133}$Cs elastic scattering at low momentum transfer is performed using an in-ring reaction technique at the Cooler Storage Ring at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou. Recoil protons from the elastic collisions between the internal H$_2$-gas target and the circulating $^{133}$Cs ions at 199.4 MeV/u are detected by a silicon-strip detector. The matter radius of $^{133}$Cs is deduced by describing the measured differential cross sections using the Glauber model. Employing the adopted proton distribution radius, a point-neutron radius of 4.86(21) fm for $^{133}$Cs is obtained. With the newly determined neutron radius, the weak mixing angle sin$^2 \theta_W$ is independently extracted to be 0.227(28) by fitting the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering data. Our work limits the sin$^2 \theta_W$ value in a range smaller than the ones proposed by the previous independent approaches, and would play an important role in searching new physics via the high precision CE$\nu$NS-CsI cross section data in the near future.

We investigate quantum phase transitions in various spin chain systems using the multipartite entanglement measure $\tau_{SEF}$ based on the monogamy inequality of squared entanglement of formation. Our results demonstrate that $\tau_{SEF}$ is more effective and reliable than bipartite entanglement or bipartite correlation measures such as entanglement of formation, von Neumann entropy, and quantum discord in characterizing quantum phase transitions. $\tau_{SEF}$ not only detects critical points that may go unnoticed by other detectors but also avoids the issue of singularity at non-critical points encountered by other measures. Furthermore, by applying $\tau_{SEF}$, we have obtained the phase diagram for the XY spin chain with three and four interactions and discovered a new quantum phase.

The ground-state mass excess of the $T_{z}=-2$ drip-line nucleus $^{22}$Al is measured for the first time to be $18103(10)$ keV using the newly-developed B$\rho$-defined isochronous mass spectrometry method at the cooler storage ring in Lanzhou. The new mass excess value allowed us to determine the excitation energies of the two low-lying $1^+$ states in $^{22}$Al with significantly reduced uncertainties of 51 keV. Comparing to the analogue states in its mirror nucleus $^{22}$F, the mirror energy differences of the two $1^+$ states in the $^{22}$Al-$^{22}$F mirror pair are determined to be $-625(51)$ keV and $-330(51)$ keV, respectively. The excitation energies and the mirror energy differences are used to test the state-of-the-art \textit{ab initio} valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group calculations with four sets of interactions derived from the chiral effective field theory. The mechanism leading to the large mirror energy differences is investigated and attributed to the occupation of the $\pi s_{1/2}$ orbital., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Quantum fluctuations are ubiquitous and play crucial roles across various scales and systems, such as the Big Bang, black hole dynamics, quantum phase transitions in microscopic many-body systems, and so on. Nuclear fission manifests as a complex nuclear shape stretching until it splits into fragments with substantial angular momenta, also exhibiting complex quantum fluctuations and specifically shape fluctuations. For over 40 years, researchers have puzzled how the fission fragment angular momenta are generated dynamically from (almost) zero spin, as well as the particular role played by quantum fluctuations. Here, for the first time, we report the quantum shape fluctuations that drive fragment angular momenta during nuclear fission, based on a global, microscopic, and dynamical simulation. The calculated probability distributions of fragment angular momenta are in good agreement with the experimental measurements, and the sawtooth-like mass dependence of average angular momenta is reproduced very well. It is noteworthy to find that the shape fluctuations -- multiple rotations, vibrations, and their couplings -- drive the generation and chaotic evolution of fragment angular momenta during fission fragment formation and induce strong correlations between angular momentum orientations of partner fragments at small, medium, and large opening angles ($\phi_{LH}\approx 30^\circ, 90^\circ, 160^\circ$). Our work not only deepens the fundamental understanding of the nuclear fission mechanism but also has implications for the $\gamma$-ray heating problem in nuclear reactors and the synthesis of superheavy elements.

Magnetic flux ropes are a bundle of twisted magnetic field lines produced by internal electric currents, which are responsible for solar eruptions and are the major drivers of geomagnetic storms. As such, it is crucial to develop a numerical model that can capture the entire evolution of a flux rope, from its birth to death, in order to predict whether adverse space weather events might occur or not. In this paper, we develop a data-driven modeling that combines a time-dependent magneto-frictional approach with a thermodynamic magnetohydrodynamic model. Our numerical modeling successfully reproduces the formation and confined eruption of an observed flux rope, and unveils the physical details behind the observations. Regarding the long-term evolution of the active region, our simulation results indicate that the flux cancellation due to collisional shearing plays a critical role in the formation of the flux rope, corresponding to a substantial increase in magnetic free energy and helicity. Regarding the eruption stage, the deformation of the flux rope during its eruption can cause an increase in the downward tension force, which suppresses it from further rising. This finding may shed light on why some torus-unstable flux ropes lead to failed eruptions after large-angle rotations. Ubiquitous in most superconducting materials and a common result of nanofabrication processes, weak-links are known for their limiting effects on the transport of electric currents. Still, they are at the root of key features of superconducting technology. By performing quantitative magneto-optical imaging experiments and thermomagnetic model simulations, we correlate the existence of local maxima in the magnetization loops of FIB-patterned Nb films to a magnetic field-induced weak-to-strong-link transformation increasing their critical current. This phenomenon arises from the nanoscale interaction between quantized magnetic flux lines and FIB-induced modifications of the device microstructure. Under an ac drive field, this leads to a rectified vortex motion along the weak-link. The reported tunable effect can be exploited in the development of new superconducting electronic devices, such as flux pumps and valves, to attenuate or amplify the supercurrent through a circuit element, and as a strategy to enhance the critical current in weak-link-bearing devices., Comment: 11 pages and 8 figures

The Super $\tau$-Charm facility (STCF) is an electron-positron collider proposed by the Chinese particle physics community. It is designed to operate in a center-of-mass energy range from 2 to 7 GeV with a peak luminosity of $0.5\times 10^{35}{\rm cm}^{-2}{\rm s}^{-1}$ or higher. The STCF will produce a data sample about a factor of 100 larger than that by the present $\tau$-Charm factory -- the BEPCII, providing a unique platform for exploring the asymmetry of matter-antimatter (charge-parity violation), in-depth studies of the internal structure of hadrons and the nature of non-perturbative strong interactions, as well as searching for exotic hadrons and physics beyond the Standard Model. The STCF project in China is under development with an extensive R\&D program. This document presents the physics opportunities at the STCF, describes conceptual designs of the STCF detector system, and discusses future plans for detector R\&D and physics case studies.

A novel technique for broadband high-precision mass measurements of short-lived exotic nuclides is reported. It is based on the isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) and realizes simultaneous determinations of revolution time and velocity of short-lived stored ions at the cooler storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou. The new technique, named as the $B\rho$-defined IMS or $B\rho$-IMS, boosts the efficiency, sensitivity, and accuracy of mass measurements, and is applied here to measure masses of neutron-deficient $fp$-shell nuclides. In a single accelerator setting, masses of $^{46}$Cr, $^{50}$Fe and $^{54}$Ni are determined with relative uncertainties of (5~-~6)$\times10^{-8}$, thereby improving the input data for testing the unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix. Thickness uniformity is regarded as an important parameter in designing thin film devices. However, some applications based on films with non-uniform thickness have recently emerged, such as gas sensors and optimized materials based on the gradual change of film composition. This work deals with superconducting Pb thin films with a thickness gradient prepared with the aid of a diffuse stencil mask. Atomic Force Microscopy and Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy show variations ranging from 90~nm to 154~nm. Quantitative magneto-optical images reveal interesting features during both the abrupt and the smooth penetration regimes of magnetic flux, as well as the thickness-dependent critical current density ($J_c$). In addition, we observe a gradual superconducting transition as the upper critical field is progressively reached for certain thicknesses. Furthermore, the hysteresis observed for triggering flux avalanches when increasing and decreasing magnetic fields is also accounted for by the $J_c$ profile evolution along the thickness gradient. Numerical simulations based on the Thermomagnetic Model are in fair agreement with the experimental data. These findings demonstrate that wedge-shaped films are a viable approach to investigate, in a continuous fashion, thickness-dependent properties of a superconducting materials.

Many prominences are supported by magnetic flux ropes. One important question is how we can determine whether the flux rope is weakly-twisted or strongly-twisted. In this paper, we attempted to check whether prominences supported by weakly-twisted and strongly-twisted flux ropes can manifest different features so that we might distinguish the two types of magnetic structures by their appearance. We performed pseudo three-dimensional simulations of two magnetic flux ropes with different twists. We found that the resulting two prominences differ in many aspects. The prominence supported by a weakly-twisted flux rope is composed mainly of transient threads, forming high-speed flows inside the prominence. Its horns are evident. Conversely, the one supported by a highly-twisted flux rope consists mainly of stable quasi-stationary threads, including longer independently trapped threads and shorter magnetically connected threads. It is also revealed that the prominence spine deviates from the flux rope axis in the vertical direction and from the photospheric polarity inversion line projected on the solar surface, especially for the weakly-twisted magnetic flux rope. The two types of prominences differ significantly in appearance. It is also suggested that a piling-up of short threads in highly-twisted flux ropes might account for the vertical-like threads in some prominences., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

A novel isochronous mass spectrometry, termed as $B\rho$-defined IMS, is established at the experimental cooler-storage ring CSRe in Lanzhou. Its potential has been studied through high precision mass measurements of $^{58}$Ni projectile fragments. Two time-of-flight detectors were installed in one of the straight sections of CSRe, thus enabling simultaneous measurements of the velocity and the revolution time of each stored short-lived ion. This allows for calculating the magnetic rigidity $B\rho$ and the orbit length $C$ of each ion. The accurate $B\rho(C)$ function has been constructed, which is a universal calibration curve used to deduce the masses of the stored nuclides. The sensitivity to single stored ions, quickness, and background-free characteristics of the method are ideally suited to address nuclides with very short lifetimes and tiniest production yields. In the limiting case of just a single particle, the attained mass resolving power allows one us to determine its mass-over-charge ratio $m/q$ with a remarkable precision of merely $\sim5$ keV. Masses of $T_z = -3/2$ fp-shell nuclides are re-determined with high accuracy, and the validity of the isospin multiplet mass equation is tested up to the heaviest isospin quartet with $A = 55$. The new masses are also used to investigate the mirror symmetry of empirical residual proton-neutron interactions.

The singular subspaces perturbation theory is of fundamental importance in probability and statistics. It has various applications across different fields. We consider two arbitrary matrices where one is a leave-one-column-out submatrix of the other one and establish a novel perturbation upper bound for the distance between the two corresponding singular subspaces. It is well-suited for mixture models and results in a sharper and finer statistical analysis than classical perturbation bounds such as Wedin's Theorem. Empowered by this leave-one-out perturbation theory, we provide a deterministic entrywise analysis for the performance of spectral clustering under mixture models. Our analysis leads to an explicit exponential error rate for spectral clustering of sub-Gaussian mixture models. For the mixture of isotropic Gaussians, the rate is optimal under a weaker signal-to-noise condition than that of L{\"o}ffler et al. (2021).

We theoretically analyze the effects of Cu/SC (superconductor) ratio, strain, and the ramp path on thermomagnetic instabilities of the superconducting coil. By considering the multi-filamentary structures, we find that a lower Cu/SC ratio leads to higher temperature peaks. The strain causes a higher frequency of flux jumps and higher voltage peaks. The temperatures recover to working temperature more difficultly and SC wires quench earlier in the presence of strain. For the jagged ramp cases, few flux jumps occur at the decreasing branch, whereas frequent flux jumps can be observed promptly when the applied current exceeds the pre-existing peak. Our simulated results agree well with experimental observations in Nb3Sn coils. Additionally, unlike the pulsed flux jumps observed in linear ramp cases, giant and prolonged flux jumps are observed at the increasing branch with a sinusoidal ramp path when the applied current is sufficiently large., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

We study the effect of the strain on the band structure and the valley-dependent transport property of graphene heterojunctions. It is found that valley-dependent separation of electrons can be achieved by utilizing the strain and on-site energies. In the presence of the strain, the values of the transmission can be effectively adjusted by changing the strengths of the strain, while the transport angle basically keeps unchanged. When an extra on-site energy is simultaneously applied to the central scattering region, not only are the electrons of valleys K and K' separated into two distinct transmission lobes in opposite transverse directions, but the transport angles of two valleys can be significantly changed. Therefore, one can realize an effective modulation of valley-dependent transport by changing the strength and stretch angle of the strain and on-site energies, which can be exploited for graphene-based valleytronics devices., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

Available experimental neutron skin thicknesses of even-even stable Ca, Ni, Sn, Pb, and Cd isotopes are evaluated, and separate trends of neutron skin thickness versus relative neutron excess $\delta=(N-Z)/A$ are firstly observed for different isotopic chains. This phenomenon is quantitatively reproduced by the deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock $+$ BCS model with SLy4 force.

We have grown single crystals of Na$_2$BaNi(PO$_4$)$_2$, a new spin-1 equilateral triangular lattice antiferromagnet (ETLAF), and performed magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements at ultralow temperatures. The main results are (i) at zero magnetic field, Na$_2$BaNi(PO$_4$)$_2$ exhibits a magnetic ordering at 430 mK with a weak ferromagnetic moment along the $c$ axis. This suggests a canted 120$^\circ$ spin structure, which is in a plane including the crystallographic $c$ axis due to the existence of an easy-axis anisotropy and ferromagnetically stacked along the $c$ axis; (ii) with increasing field along the $c$ axis, a 1/3 magnetization plateau is observed which means the canted 120$^\circ$ spin structure is transformed to a up up down (UUD) spin structure. With even higher fields, the UUD phase further evolves to possible V and V' phases; (iii) with increasing field along the $a$ axis, the canted 120$^\circ$ spin structure is possibly transformed to a umbrella phase and a V phase. Therefore, Na$_2$BaNi(PO$_4$)$_2$ is a rare example of spin-1 ETLAF with single crystalline form to exhibit easy-axis spin anisotropy and series of quantum spin state transitions., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. The electromagnetic character of the $\Delta I=1$ transitions connecting the one- to zero-phonon and the two- to one-phonon wobbling bands should be dominated by an $E2$ component, due to the collective motion of the entire nuclear charge. In the present work it is shown, based on combined angular correlation and linear polarization measurements, that the mixing ratios of all analyzed connecting transitions between low-lying bands in $^{135}$Pr interpreted as zero-, one-, and two-phonon wobbling bands, have absolute values smaller than one. This indicates predominant $M1$ magnetic character, which is incompatible with the proposed wobbling nature. All experimental observables are instead in good agreement with quasiparticle-plus-triaxial-rotor model calculations, which describe the bands as resulting from a rapid re-alignment of the total angular momentum from the short to the intermediate nuclear axis.

Solar filaments, also called solar prominences when appearing above the solar limb, are cold, dense materials suspended in the hot tenuous solar corona, consisting of numerous long, fibril-like threads. These threads are the key to disclosing the physics of solar filaments. Similar structures also exist in galaxy clusters. Besides their mysterious formation, filament threads are observed to move with alternating directions, which are called counterstreaming flows. However, the origin of these flows has not been clarified yet. Here we report that turbulent heating at the solar surface is the key, which randomly evaporates materials from the solar surface to the corona, naturally reproducing the formation and counterstreamings of the sparse threads in the solar corona. A new $\alpha$-emitting isotope $^{214}$U, produced by fusion-evaporation reaction $^{182}$W($^{36}$Ar, 4n)$^{214}$U, was identified by employing the gas-filled recoil separator SHANS and recoil-$\alpha$ correlation technique. More precise $\alpha$-decay properties of even-even nuclei $^{216,218}$U were also measured in reactions of $^{40}$Ar, $^{40}$Ca with $^{180, 182, 184}$W targets. By combining the experimental data, improved $\alpha$-decay reduced widths $\delta^2$ for the even-even Po--Pu nuclei in the vicinity of magic neutron number $N=126$ were deduced. Their systematic trends are discussed in terms of $N_{p}N_{n}$ scheme in order to study the influence of proton-neutron interaction on $\alpha$ decay in this region of nuclei. It is strikingly found that the reduced widths of $^{214,216}$U are significantly enhanced by a factor of two as compared with the $N_{p}N_{n}$ systematics for the $84 \leq Z \leq 90$ and $N<126$ even-even nuclei. The abnormal enhancement is interpreted by the strong monopole interaction between the valence protons and neutrons occupying the $\pi 1f_{7/2}$ and $\nu 1f_{5/2}$ spin-orbit partner orbits, which is supported by a large-scale shell model calculation.

Tunable symmetry breaking plays a crucial role for the manipulation of topological phases of quantum matter. Here, through combined high-pressure magneto-transport measurements, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction, we demonstrate a pressure-induced topological phase transition in nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS. Symmetry analysis and first-principles calculations suggest that this pressure-induced topological phase transition may be attributed to weak lattice distortions by non-hydrostatic compression, which breaks some crystal symmetries, such as the mirror and inversion symmetries. This finding provides some experimental evidence for crystal symmetry protection for the topological semimetal state, which is at the heart of topological relativistic fermion physics., Comment: 27 pages, 17 figures

Precession is a unique motion in which the orientation of the rotational axis of a rotating body is not fixed but moving, and it generally exists in the Universe from giant stars through tiny atomic nuclei. In principle, the precession of an atomic nuclide can be approximately described as wobbling motion, arising from the coupling of a rotation and a harmonic vibration. Recently, a number of wobbling bands were reported at low spin, which violate the wobbling approximation that can be valid only at high spin. Here we explore the nature of the reported low-spin wobbling bands. Via a new experiment, we demonstrate that one such band in $^{187}$Au is generated by dominant single-particle excitation rather than by the excitation of a wobbling phonon. We point out that the imperfect research paradigm used previously would lead to unreliable identification of low-spin wobbling bands. Consequently, new experimental approaches should be developed to distinguish among the different excitation mechanisms that can give rise to the observed low-spin bands in odd-even nuclei.

In the isochronous mass spectrometry (IMS) performed at storage rings, masses of short-lived nuclides are determined through precision measurements of their mean revolution times. However, the distribution of revolution times could be seriously deteriorated by instabilities of the ring's magnetic fields. This becomes a significant obstacle for the particle identifications and mass determinations. A data analysis method is described in this paper which is able to largely remove the uncertainties caused by the magnetic field instabilities in the particle identifications and the mean revolution times. We show that this method is very effective for the IMS experiments even when the magnetic fields of a storage ring vary slowly up to a level of $\Delta B/B\sim 10^{-4}$., Comment: 11 pages, 13 figures
