Abstract

The continuous development of artificial intelligence has a profound impact on biomedicine and other fields, providing new research ideas and technical methods. Brain-inspired computing is an important intersection between multimodal technology and biomedical field. Focusing on the application scenarios of decoding text and speech from brain signals in human-computer interaction, this paper presents a comprehensive review of the brain-inspired computing models based on machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), tracking their evolution, application value, challenges and potential research trends. We first reviews its basic concepts and development history, and divides its evolution into two stages: recent machine learning and current deep learning, emphasizing the importance of each stage in the research of human-computer interaction for brain-inspired computing. In addition, the latest progress of deep learning in different tasks of human-computer interaction for brain-inspired computing is reviewed from six perspectives, such as data sets and different brain signals, and the application of key technologies in the model is elaborated in detail. Despite significant advances in brain-inspired computational models, challenges remain to fully exploit their capabilities, and we provide insights into possible directions for future academic research. Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) stands as a chronic metabolic ailment predominantly characterized by elevated blood glucose levels, stemming from either a resistance to insulin or aberrations in insulin secretion. The ensuing persistent hyperglycemia, a direct consequence of pancreatic β-cell devastation, acts as a catalyst for a myriad of complications, inclusive of extensive neuropathies. The disease has substantial prevalence and mortality rates, underscoring the gravity of its impact on public health. Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) are readily obtainable, and they exhibit a profound capacity for self-renewal, multi-lineage differentiation, and vigorous proliferation. Remarkably, DPSCs can differentiate into pancreatic β-cells, subsequently participate in insulin secretion and play a pivotal role in immune modulation. This has achieved notable advancements in the therapeutic domain, particularly in the treatment of chronic diseases. Furthermore, DPSCs harbor the potential to mitigate symptoms in patients afflicted with type 1 diabetes. They navigate this therapeutic pathway through mechanisms that involve suppressing autoimmunity, modulating inflammatory responses, and counteracting oxidative stress. This article meticulously reviews the biological characteristics inherent to DPSCs and explores their multifaceted therapeutic potential in addressing DM and its associated complications. Through this endeavor, the article aims to contribute to the refinement and enhancement of DM management strategies.

17. A Comparison of U.S. and Chinese Geometry Standards through the Lens of van Hiele Levels

Abstract

The present study aims to compare the geometry standards in U.S. Common Core State Standards of Mathematics (CCSSM) and Chinese Compulsory Education Mathematics Curriculum Standards (CMCS) through the lens of van Hiele levels. The study considered a standard unit as one or multiple learning expectation(s) and placed each learning expectation into van Hiele levels. By examining the van Hiele level distributions of the learning expectations and major topics, this study investigated how CCSSM and CMCS propose the students' development of geometric thoughts. The findings reveal different emphases in geometry learning expectations of CCSSM and CMCS. Specifically, (a) Geometry standards in CCSSM are more general, whereas geometry standards in CMCS are more specific; (b) CMCS shows a more consistent progression through grade bands than CCSSM; (c) CCSSM makes more connections between various aspects within a topic and across multiple topics than CMCS; (d) CCSSM highlights Dynamic Geometry Environments (DGEs), whereas CMCS underscores abstract and rigor at the upper level. Implications of this study and suggestions for future revisions for both standards are discussed.

22. Image of Mathematics In- and Out-of-School: A Case Study of Two Original Participants in an Afterschool STEM Club--Girls Excelling in Math And Science (GEMS)

Abstract

People often view mathematics as abstract, cold, and irrelevant to real-life, and their school experiences influence such views. In this case study, we investigated the mathematics learning experiences of two women who participated in an afterschool girls STEM club 26 years ago. We explored their experiences in and out of school and how such experiences informed their images of mathematics. Data were collected from a survey, focus group interviews, and individual interviews. Using qualitative analysis, we learned that their school mathematics experiences influenced the participants' images of mathematics. The findings also revealed the participants' continuous and discontinuous learning experiences between school and out-of-school mathematics. This study suggests creating spaces to develop curricula that bridge the gap between school and out-of-school learning experiences. [For the complete proceedings, see ED630060.]

43. Critical Understanding of English Learners: Experience and Practice of Educators in a Professional Development Course

Abstract

Studies over the years emphasize the need to foster critical cultural awareness among teachers in U.S. classrooms. Using a critical theoretical approach, we examined the critical cultural awareness of practicing teachers and educators' experiences with English Learners (ELs) and their preparedness to meet the needs of ELs through actionable plans from a professional development (PD) module. We argue that PD courses on critical theoretical perspectives on ELs are essential not just for EL professionals but for all educators who work with ELs in one way or the other. Sixty-eight educators (teachers and school directors) in a midwestern community participated in the PD modular course, where they were exposed to various critical theories. The data include discussion responses and educators' critical theoretical reflections on ELs. In this article, we iterate the need to include critical theoretical EL education in teacher training preparation and professional development programs to support pre-service teachers, in-service teachers, and principals. The findings show that the impact of such critical awareness transforms teachers' and educators' perceptions about their respective roles in effectively educating ELs.
