Using a new type of insect probe trap, the activity and distribution of Tribolium castaneum in wheat grain bulks inside experimental silos were collected and analyzed to investigate its distribution patterns and main influencing factors within the grain bulks. An equation for estimating insect population density was established to provide a scientific basis for accurate monitoring and early warning. The results showed that the daily capture of Tribolium castaneum did not change significantly over time. When the insect population density was low, Tribolium castaneum was mainly distributed in the top and middle layers of the grain bulk. When the insect population density was high, Tribolium castaneum was uniformly distributed within the grain bulk. Tribolium castaneum exhibited thermophilic and hygrophilic behaviors, with an optimal activity temperature range of 22~30 ℃ and a relative humidity range of 40%~53%. By comprehensively analyzing the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of the insect population and the effects of temperature and humidity, the actual insect population density could be estimated based on the number of insects captured by the probe traps. The equation for estimating the insect population density was: y = 10.566 – 0.321 × x1 – 0.017 × x2 + 0.026 × x3, x1: temperature (℃), x2: relative humidity (%), x3: number of insects captured.

BACKGROUND Responses to sex pheromones are commonly antagonized by pheromone components of closely related species. Pheromone antagonism has not been widely explored for phylogenetically distant species that have completely different pheromone components. Yet, pheromone components of sympatrically occurring species may also interfere with each other even if these species are distantly related. Here, the effects of heterospecific pheromones on electrophysiology (electroantennogram, EAG) and behavioral responses were tested on the diamondback moth Plutella xyloslella (Plutellidae) and two sympatric noctuid moth species, Spodoptera litura and Spodoptera exigua, whose larvae also feed on Brassica crops. RESULTS: The sex pheromone blend of P. xyloslella, and its components, did not elicit EAG responses in males of the two noctuid species, while sex pheromone components of the noctuid moths elicited significant EAG responses in P. xyloslella males. In wind tunnel bioassays, both (Z, E)‐9, 12‐tetradecadienyl acetate (ZE‐9,12‐14:OAc) and (Z, E)‐9, 11‐tetradecadienyl acetate (ZE‐9,11‐14:OAc), sex pheromone components from the noctuid moths, inhibited the upwind flight behavior of P. xyloslella males toward an intraspecific pheromone odor source. In Brassica fields, sex pheromone lures of P. xyloslella did not influence trap catches of the noctuid moths, while P. xyloslella pheromone lures baited with either ZE‐9,11‐14:OAc or ZE‐9,12‐14:OAc decreased trap catches of P. xyloslella males in a dose‐dependent manner. Trap catches of P. xylostella males were also affected by the proximity of ZE‐9,11‐14:OAc or ZE‐9,12‐14:OAc to P. xylostella lures. CONCLUSION: The uni‐directional pheromone antagonism by ZE‐9,11‐14:OAc and ZE‐9,12‐14:OAc suggests innovative semiochemical‐based strategies for the management of P. xyloslella and other economically important pests in Brassica fields. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry. In the present study, partial sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene of 22 island populations of the springtail Homidia socia in the Thousand Island Lake were sequenced. Across all sequences, 37 haplotypes were identified for the 510‐bp mitochondrial (mt) DNA COI gene. Haplotype 2 was the most common, and was distributed in the most of the 22 island populations. Haplotype diversity ranged from 0.065 to 0.733, and the total genetic diversity was 0.56216. The genetic characteristics of the 22 island populations were analyzed using the fixation index and gene flow, with values of 0.00043–0.94900 and 0.02703–703.72540, respectively. Comparison between (island area and isolations) with population genetic diversity revealed that there were no significant correlations between them, except for a significant correlation between the number of haplotypes and island area. Mantel tests showed that there was no significant correlation between geographic distance and genetic distance among various groups. All the results indicated that there were no obvious relationships between island characteristics and the genetic diversity of the springtails. We consider that the low dispersal capacity of springtails and the island patches surrounded by water in the Thousand Island Lake are the major factors affecting the genetic diversity of H. socia. Third instar larvae of the cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) were reared with artificial diet containing a Bacillus thuringiensis - abamectin (BtA) biopesticide mixture that resulted in 20% mortality (LD20). The adult male survivors from larvae treated with BtA exhibited a higher percentage of “orientation” than control males but lower percentages of “approaching” and “landing” in wind tunnel bioassays. Adult female survivors from larvae treated with BtA produced higher sex pheromone titers and displayed a lower calling percentage than control females. The ratio of Z-11-hexadecenal (Z11–16:Ald) and Z-9-hexadecenal (Z9–16:Ald) in BtA-treated females changed and coefficients of variation (CV) of Z11–16:Ald and Z9–16:Ald were expanded compared to control females. The peak circadian calling time of BtA-treated females occurred later than that of control females. In mating choice experiment, both control males and BtA-treated males preferred to mate with control females and a portion of the Bt-A treated males did not mate whereas all control males did. Our Data support that treatment of larvae with BtA had an effect on the sex pheromone communication system in surviving H.armigera moths that may contribute to assortative mating. Aim: To quantify the association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and migraine., Methods: A systematic literature search of PubMed and EMBASE was conducted from inception to December 2013. Studies that provided data dealing with H. pylori infection in patients with migraine, as well as healthy controls, were selected. Meta-analysis was carried out using the odds ratio (OR) with a fixed or random effects model, and a 95%CI for the OR was calculated. An unconditional logistic regression model was used to analyze potential parameters related to H. pylori prevalence. Subgroup analyses were conducted as methods of detection and evidence grade., Results: Five case-control studies published between 2000 and 2013 were finally identified, involving 903 patients, with a total H. pylori infection rate of 39.31%. The prevalence of H. pylori infection was significantly greater in migraineurs than in controls (44.97% vs 33.26%, OR = 1.92, 95%CI: 1.05-3.51, P = 0.001). A sensitivity test indicated that no single study dominated the combined results. Univariate regression analysis found that publication year, geographical distribution and evidence grade were relevant to the results and were the main reason for the heterogeneity. Subgroup analysis found a significantly greater infection rate of H. pylori in Asian patients with migraine, but no statistically significant infection rate in European patients. The ORs were 3.48 (95%CI: 2.09-5.81, P = 0.000) and 1.19 (95%CI: 0.86-1.65, P = 0.288), respectively., Conclusion: The pooled data suggest a trend of more frequent H. pylori infections in patients with migraine.

Aim: To investigate the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of intestinal T-cell lymphomas (ITCL) by retrospective analysis., Methods: Sixty-eight patients who were diagnosed with ITCL in case reports in the Chinese literature were compiled and reviewed. Age, gender, CD56 expression, surgical management, multifocal nature, perforation and cyclophosphamide chemotherapy were analyzed as the prognostic factors. The Kaplan-Meier method was adopted for the univariate analysis and the cumulative survival curve analysis., Results: The male-to-female ratio was 1.52 to 1. The median age was 41.7 years. Twenty-seven patients had symptoms of abdominal pain or diarrhea. Thirty-six of 60 patients with temperature records had high fevers at the onset of the illness. Twenty-six of 34 patients who underwent fiberoptic colonoscopy were misdiagnosed with Crohn's disease, intestinal tuberculosis or cancer. Sixty-one patients underwent surgery. Twelve of 61 surgical patients required a second operation for anastomotic leakage or secondary perforation. The sites of lesion involvement were the jejunum (8.82%), ileum (29.41%), ileum and colon (4.41%), colon (55.88%) and appendix (1.47%). The median cumulative survival rate was 3 mo (3.00 ± 0.48)., Conclusion: Efforts should be made to correctly diagnose ITCL and select the proper operative approach that may reduce serious complications and create opportunities for further treatment.

Objective: To investigate the therapeutic effects of closed reduction and external fixation (plaster or splint) for the treatment of displaced humeral supracondylar fractures in children., Methods: From March 2007 to September 2009,33 children (15 female and 18 male) with humeral supracondylar fractures treated in our hospital, ranging from 3 to 12 years old with an average of 6.4 years old. All the fractures were extension-type injuries, the flexion injures were excluded in our study. The humeral supracondylar fractures were classified according to Gartland classification. There were 21 Type H and 12 type III. In the initial treatment, all the patients were treated with closed reduction and external immobilization. The blood supply of the damaged upper extremity was evaluated before and after treatment. Clinical assessment was obtained at final follow-up using Flynn criteria, and radiologic assessment was obtained using Baumann and lateral humerocapitellar angles., Results: All the children were treated successfully with closed reduction in the initial time; 24 children maintained limb alignment by external immobilization. Nine patients lost position due to the swelling around the elbow which affected unstable external fixation during the follow-up, 5 of which were treated with a repeated closed reduction and internal fixation with Kirschner wires, 4 of which were treated with traction. Thirty-one patients had a satisfactory outcome and 2 patients had an unsatisfactory outcome according to the Flynn criteria at the latest follows-up., Conclusion: Closed reduction and external stabilization is an important method for the treatment of displaced humeral supracondylar fractures in children. Making regular follow-up visits after closed reduction and casting is important for patients to maintain acceptable alignment, avoid complications and diagnose any loss of reduction.
