Learning-task oriented semantic communication is pivotal in optimizing transmission efficiency by extracting and conveying essential semantics tailored to specific tasks, such as image reconstruction and classification. Nevertheless, the challenge of eavesdropping poses a formidable threat to semantic privacy due to the open nature of wireless communications. In this paper, intelligent reflective surface (IRS)-enhanced secure semantic communication (IRS-SSC) is proposed to guarantee the physical layer security from a task-oriented semantic perspective. Specifically, a multi-layer codebook is exploited to discretize continuous semantic features and describe semantics with different numbers of bits, thereby meeting the need for hierarchical semantic representation and further enhancing the transmission efficiency. Novel semantic security metrics, i.e., secure semantic rate (S-SR) and secure semantic spectrum efficiency (S-SSE), are defined to map the task-oriented security requirements at the application layer into the physical layer. To achieve artificial intelligence (AI)-native secure communication, we propose a noise disturbance enhanced hybrid deep reinforcement learning (NdeHDRL)-based resource allocation scheme. This scheme dynamically maximizes the S-SSE by jointly optimizing the bits for semantic representations, reflective coefficients of the IRS, and the subchannel assignment. Moreover, we propose a novel semantic context awared state space (SCA-SS) to fusion the high-dimensional semantic space and the observable system state space, which enables the agent to perceive semantic context and solves the dimensional catastrophe problem. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed schemes in both enhancing the security performance and the S-SSE compared to several benchmark schemes.

Deep learning (DL) has significantly improved automatic modulation classification (AMC) by leveraging neural networks as the feature extractor.However, as the DL-based AMC becomes increasingly widespread, it is faced with the severe secure issue from various adversarial attacks. Existing defense methods often suffer from the high computational cost, intractable parameter tuning, and insufficient robustness.This paper proposes an eXplainable artificial intelligence (XAI) defense approach, which uncovers the negative information caused by the adversarial attack through measuring the importance of input features based on the SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP).By properly removing the negative information in adversarial samples and then fine-tuning(FT) the model, the impact of the attacks on the classification result can be mitigated.Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed SHAP-FT improves the classification performance of the model by 15%-20% under different attack levels,which not only enhances model robustness against various attack levels but also reduces the resource consumption, validating its effectiveness in safeguarding communication networks., Comment: Accepted by WCSP 2024

Automatic modulation classification (AMC) is essential for the advancement and efficiency of future wireless communication networks. Deep learning (DL)-based AMC frameworks have garnered extensive attention for their impressive classification performance. However, existing DL-based AMC frameworks rely on two assumptions, large-scale training data and the same class pool between the training and testing data, which are not suitable for \emph{few-shot and open-set} scenarios. To address this issue, a novel few-shot open-set automatic modulation classification (FSOS-AMC) framework is proposed by exploiting a multi-scale attention network, meta-prototype training, and a modular open-set classifier. The multi-scale attention network is used to extract the features from the input signal, the meta-prototype training is adopted to train the feature extractor and the modular open-set classifier can be utilized to classify the testing data into one of the known modulations or potential unknown modulations. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed FSOS-AMC framework can achieve higher classification accuracy than the state-of-the-art methods for known modulations and unknown modulations in terms of accuracy and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). In hierarchical cognitive radio networks, edge or cloud servers utilize the data collected by edge devices for modulation classification, which, however, is faced with problems of the transmission overhead, data privacy, and computation load. In this article, an edge learning (EL) based framework jointly mobilizing the edge device and the edge server for intelligent co-inference is proposed to realize the collaborative automatic modulation classification (C-AMC) between them. A spectrum semantic compression neural network (SSCNet) with the lightweight structure is designed for the edge device to compress the collected raw data into a compact semantic message that is then sent to the edge server via the wireless channel. On the edge server side, a modulation classification neural network (MCNet) combining bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) and multi-head attention layers is elaborated to determine the modulation type from the noisy semantic message. By leveraging the computation resources of both the edge device and the edge server, high transmission overhead and risks of data privacy leakage are avoided. For ultra-wideband and high-rate wireless communication systems, wideband spectrum sensing (WSS) is critical, since it empowers secondary users (SUs) to capture the spectrum holes for opportunistic transmission. However, WSS encounters challenges such as excessive costs of hardware and computation due to the high sampling rate, as well as robustness issues arising from scenario mismatch. In this paper, a WSS neural network (WSSNet) is proposed by exploiting multicoset preprocessing to enable the sub-Nyquist sampling, with the two dimensional convolution design specifically tailored to work with the preprocessed samples. A federated transfer learning (FTL) based framework mobilizing multiple SUs is further developed to achieve a robust model adaptable to various scenarios, which is paved by the selective weight pruning for the fast model adaptation and inference. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed FTL-WSSNet achieves the fairly good performance in different target scenarios even without local adaptation samples.

As the demands for immediate and effective responses increase in both civilian and military domains, the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms emerge as effective solutions, in which multiple cooperative UAVs can work together to achieve specific goals. However, how to manage such complex systems to ensure real-time adaptability lack sufficient researches. Hence, in this paper, we propose the cooperative cognitive dynamic system (CCDS), to optimize the management for UAV swarms. CCDS leverages a hierarchical and cooperative control structure that enables real-time data processing and decision. Accordingly, CCDS optimizes the UAV swarm management via dynamic reconfigurability and adaptive intelligent optimization. In addition, CCDS can be integrated with the biomimetic mechanism to efficiently allocate tasks for UAV swarms. Further, the distributed coordination of CCDS ensures reliable and resilient control, thus enhancing the adaptability and robustness. Finally, the potential challenges and future directions are analyzed, to provide insights into managing UAV swarms in dynamic heterogeneous networking.

Wireless signal recognition (WSR) is crucial in modern and future wireless communication networks since it aims to identify properties of the received signal. Although many deep learning-based WSR models have been developed, they still rely on a large amount of labeled training data. Thus, they cannot tackle the few-sample problem in the practically and dynamically changing wireless communication environment. To overcome this challenge, a novel SSwsrNet framework is proposed by using the deep residual shrinkage network (DRSN) and semi-supervised learning. The DRSN can learn discriminative features from noisy signals. Moreover, a modular semi-supervised learning method that combines labeled and unlabeled data using MixMatch is exploited to further improve the classification performance under few-sample conditions. Extensive simulation results on automatic modulation classification (AMC) and wireless technology classification (WTC) demonstrate that our proposed WSR scheme can achieve better performance than the benchmark schemes in terms of classification accuracy. Automatic modulation classification (AMC) is a promising technology to realize intelligent wireless communications in the sixth generation (6G) wireless communication networks. Recently, many data-and-knowledge dual-driven AMC schemes have achieved high accuracy. However, most of these schemes focus on generating additional prior knowledge or features of blind signals, which consumes longer computation time and ignores the interpretability of the model learning process. To solve these problems, we propose a novel knowledge graph (KG) driven AMC (KGAMC) scheme by training the networks under the guidance of domain knowledge. A modulation knowledge graph (MKG) with the knowledge of modulation technical characteristics and application scenarios is constructed and a relation-graph convolution network (RGCN) is designed to extract knowledge of the MKG. This knowledge is utilized to facilitate the signal features separation of the data-oriented model by implementing a specialized feature aggregation method. Simulation results demonstrate that KGAMC achieves superior classification performance compared to other benchmark schemes, especially in the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) range. Furthermore, the signal features of the high-order modulation are more discriminative, thus reducing the confusion between similar signals.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widely used for object detection. However, the existing UAV-based object detection systems are subject to the serious challenge, namely, the finite computation, energy and communication resources, which limits the achievable detection performance. In order to overcome this challenge, a UAV cognitive semantic communication system is proposed by exploiting knowledge graph. Moreover, a multi-scale compression network is designed for semantic compression to reduce data transmission volume while guaranteeing the detection performance. Furthermore, an object detection scheme is proposed by using the knowledge graph to overcome channel noise interference and compression distortion. Simulation results conducted on the practical aerial image dataset demonstrate that compared to the benchmark systems, our proposed system has superior detection accuracy, communication robustness and computation efficiency even under high compression rates and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions.

With the aim of boosting the security of the conventional directional modulation (DM) network, a secure DM network assisted by intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is investigated in this paper. To maximize the secrecy rate (SR), we jointly optimize the power allocation (PA) factor, confidential message (CM) beamforming, artificial noise (AN) beamforming, and IRS reflected beamforming. To tackle the formulated problem, a maximizing SR with high-performance (Max-SR-HP) scheme is proposed, where the PA factor, CM beamforming, AN beamforming, and IRS phase shift matrix are derived by the derivative operation, generalized Rayleigh-Ritz, generalized power iteration, and semidefinite relaxation criteria, respectively. Given that the high complexity of the above scheme, a maximizing SR with low-complexity (Max-SR-LC) scheme is proposed, which employs the generalized leakage and successive convex approximation algorithms to derive the variables. Simulation results show that both the proposed schemes can significantly boost the SR performance, and are better than the equal PA, no IRS and random phase shift IRS schemes.

Semantic communication, recognized as a promising technology for future intelligent applications, has received widespread research attention. Despite the potential of semantic communication to enhance transmission reliability, especially in low signal-to-noise (SNR) environments, the critical issue of resource allocation and compatibility in the dynamic wireless environment remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we propose an adaptive semantic resource allocation paradigm with semantic-bit quantization (SBQ) compatibly for existing wireless communications, where the inaccurate environment perception introduced by the additional mapping relationship between semantic metrics and transmission metrics is solved. In order to investigate the performance of semantic communication networks, the quality of service for semantic communication (SC-QoS), including the semantic quantization efficiency (SQE) and transmission latency, is proposed for the first time. A problem of maximizing the overall effective SC-QoS is formulated by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming of the base station, the bits for semantic representation, the subchannel assignment, and the bandwidth resource allocation. To address the non-convex formulated problem, an intelligent resource allocation scheme is proposed based on a hybrid deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm, where the intelligent agent can perceive both semantic tasks and dynamic wireless environments. Simulation results demonstrate that our design can effectively combat semantic noise and achieve superior performance in wireless communications compared to several benchmark schemes. Furthermore, compared to mapping-guided paradigm based resource allocation schemes, our proposed adaptive scheme can achieve up to 13% performance improvement in terms of SC-QoS.

Secure communications are of paramount importance in spectrum sharing networks due to the allocation and sharing characteristics of spectrum resources. To further explore the potential of intelligent reflective surfaces (IRSs) in enhancing spectrum sharing and secure transmission performance, a multiple intelligent reflection surface (multi-IRS)-assisted sensing-enhanced wideband spectrum sharing network is investigated by considering physical layer security techniques. An intelligent resource allocation scheme based on double deep Q networks (D3QN) algorithm and soft Actor-Critic (SAC) algorithm is proposed to maximize the secure transmission rate of the secondary network by jointly optimizing IRS pairings, subchannel assignment, transmit beamforming of the secondary base station, reflection coefficients of IRSs and the sensing time. To tackle the sparse reward problem caused by a significant amount of reflection elements of multiple IRSs, the method of hierarchical reinforcement learning is exploited. An alternative optimization (AO)-based conventional mathematical scheme is introduced to verify the computational complexity advantage of our proposed intelligent scheme. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed intelligent scheme as well as the superiority of multi-IRS design in enhancing secrecy rate and spectrum utilization. It is shown that inappropriate deployment of IRSs can reduce the security performance with the presence of multiple eavesdroppers (Eves), and the arrangement of IRSs deserves further consideration.

Wireless powered mobile edge computing (WP-MEC) has been recognized as a promising solution to enhance the computational capability and sustainable energy supply for low-power wireless devices (WDs). However, when the communication links between the hybrid access point (HAP) and WDs are hostile, the energy transfer efficiency and task offloading rate are compromised. To tackle this problem, we propose to employ multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) to WP-MEC networks. Based on the practical IRS phase shift model, we formulate a total computation rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing downlink/uplink IRSs passive beamforming, downlink energy beamforming and uplink multi-user detection (MUD) vector at HAPs, task offloading power and local computing frequency of WDs, and the time slot allocation. Specifically, we first derive the optimal time allocation for downlink wireless energy transmission (WET) to IRSs and the corresponding energy beamforming. Next, with fixed time allocation for the downlink WET to WDs, the original optimization problem can be divided into two independent subproblems. For the WD charging subproblem, the optimal IRSs passive beamforming is derived by utilizing the successive convex approximation (SCA) method and the penalty-based optimization technique, and for the offloading computing subproblem, we propose a joint optimization framework based on the fractional programming (FP) method. Resource allocation is of crucial importance in wireless communications. However, it is extremely challenging to design efficient resource allocation schemes for future wireless communication networks since the formulated resource allocation problems are generally non-convex and consist of various coupled variables. Moreover, the dynamic changes of practical wireless communication environment and user service requirements thirst for efficient real-time resource allocation. To tackle these issues, a novel partially observable deep multi-agent active inference (PODMAI) framework is proposed for realizing intelligent resource allocation. A belief based learning method is exploited for updating the policy by minimizing the variational free energy. A decentralized training with a decentralized execution multi-agent strategy is designed to overcome the limitations of the partially observable state information. Exploited the proposed framework, an intelligent spectrum allocation and trajectory optimization scheme is developed for a spectrum sharing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) network with dynamic transmission rate requirements as an example. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed framework can significantly improve the sum transmission rate of the secondary network compared to various benchmark schemes. Moreover, the convergence speed of the proposed PODMAI is significantly improved compared with the conventional reinforcement learning framework. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication is of crucial importance for diverse practical applications. However, it is susceptible to the severe spectrum scarcity problem and interference since it operates in the unlicensed spectrum band. In order to tackle those issues, a dynamic spectrum sharing network is considered with the anti-jamming technique. Moreover, an intelligent spectrum allocation and trajectory optimization scheme is proposed to adapt to diverse jamming models by exploiting our designed novel online-offline multi-agent actor-critic and deep deterministic policy-gradient framework. Simulation results demonstrate the high efficiency of our proposed framework. Semantic communication is envisioned as a promising technique to break through the Shannon limit. However, semantic inference and semantic error correction have not been well studied. Moreover, error correction methods of existing semantic communication frameworks are inexplicable and inflexible, which limits the achievable performance. In this paper, to tackle this issue, a knowledge graph is exploited to develop semantic communication systems. Two cognitive semantic communication frameworks are proposed for the single-user and multiple-user communication scenarios. Moreover, a simple, general, and interpretable semantic alignment algorithm for semantic information detection is proposed. Furthermore, an effective semantic correction algorithm is proposed by mining the inference rule from the knowledge graph. Additionally, the pre-trained model is fine-tuned to recover semantic information. For the multi-user cognitive semantic communication system, a message recovery algorithm is proposed to distinguish messages of different users by matching the knowledge level between the source and the destination. Extensive simulation results conducted on a public dataset demonstrate that our proposed single-user and multi-user cognitive semantic communication systems are superior to benchmark communication systems in terms of the data compression rate and communication reliability. Due to the double fading effect caused by conventional passive intelligent reflecting surface (IRS), the signal via the reflection link is weak. To enhance the received signal, active elements with the ability to amplify the reflected signal are introduced to the passive IRS forming hybrid IRS. In this paper, we propose a hybrid IRS-aided amplify-and-forward (AF) relay wireless network, where an optimization problem is formulated, which is subject to the constraints of transmit power budgets at the source/AF relay/hybrid IRS and that of unit modulus for passive IRS elements. By alternately designing the beamforming matrix at AF relay and the reflecting coefficient matrices at IRS, signal-to-noise ratio can be maximized. To achieve high rate performance and extend the coverage range, a high-performance method based on semidefinite relaxation and fractional programming (HP-SDR-FP) algorithm is presented. Due to its extremely high complexity, a low-complexity method based on whitening filter, general power iterative and generalized Rayleigh-Ritz (WF-GPI-GRR) is proposed, which is different from HP-SDR-FP method. It is assumed that the amplifying coefficient of each active IRS element is equal, and the corresponding analytical solution of the amplifying coefficient can be obtained according to the transmit powers at AF relay and hybrid IRS. Simulation results show that the proposed two methods can greatly improve the rate performance compared to the existing networks, such as the passive IRS-aided AF relay and only AF relay network. In particular, a 50.0% rate gain over the existing networks is approximately achieved in the high power budget region of hybrid IRS. Moreover, it is verified that the proposed HP-SDR-FP method perform better than WF-GPI-GRR method in terms of rate performance.

Semantic communication in the 6G era has been deemed a promising communication paradigm to break through the bottleneck of traditional communications. However, its applications for the multi-user scenario, especially the broadcasting case, remain under-explored. To effectively exploit the benefits enabled by semantic communication, in this paper, we propose a one-to-many semantic communication system. Specifically, we propose a deep neural network (DNN) enabled semantic communication system called MR\_DeepSC. By leveraging semantic features for different users, a semantic recognizer based on the pre-trained model, i.e., DistilBERT, is built to distinguish different users. Furthermore, the transfer learning is adopted to speed up the training of new receiver networks. Terahertz (THz) and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) have been regarded as two promising technologies to improve the capacity and coverage for future 6G networks. Generally, IRS is usually equipped with large-scale elements when implemented at THz frequency. In this case, the near-field model and beam squint should be considered. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the far-field and near-field beam squint problems in THz IRS communications for the first time. The far-field and near-field channel models are constructed based on the different electromagnetic radiation characteristics. Next, we first analyze the far-field beam squint and its effect for the beam gain based on the cascaded base station (BS)-IRS-user channel model, and then the near-field case is studied. To overcome the far-field and near-field beam squint effects, we propose to apply delay adjustable metasurface (DAM) to IRS, and develop a scheme of optimizing the reflecting phase shifts and time delays of IRS elements, which effectively eliminates the beam gain loss caused by beam squint. Finally, simulations are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed schemes in combating the near and far field beam squint.

Automatic modulation classification is of crucial importance in wireless communication networks. Deep learning based automatic modulation classification schemes have attracted extensive attention due to the superior accuracy. However, the data-driven method relies on a large amount of training samples and the classification accuracy is poor in the low signal-to-noise radio (SNR). In order to tackle these problems, a novel data-and-knowledge dual-driven automatic modulation classification scheme based on radio frequency machine learning is proposed by exploiting the attribute features of different modulations. The visual model is utilized to extract visual features. The attribute learning model is used to learn the attribute semantic representations. The transformation model is proposed to convert the attribute representation into the visual space. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that our proposed automatic modulation classification scheme can achieve better performance than the benchmark schemes in terms of the classification accuracy, especially in the low SNR. Moreover, the confusion among high-order modulations is reduced by using our proposed scheme compared with other traditional schemes.

Mobile-edge computing (MEC) is expected to provide low-latency computation service for wireless devices (WDs). However, when WDs are located at cell edge or communication links between base stations (BSs) and WDs are blocked, the offloading latency will be large. To address this issue, we propose an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted cell-free MEC system consisting of multiple BSs and IRSs for improving the transmission environment. Consequently, we formulate a min-max latency optimization problem by jointly designing multi-user detection (MUD) matrices, IRSs' reflecting beamforming vectors, WDs' transmit power and edge computing resource, subject to constraints on edge computing capability and IRSs phase shifts. To solve it, an alternating optimization algorithm based on the block coordinate descent (BCD) technique is proposed, in which the original non-convex problem is decoupled into two subproblems for alternately optimizing computing and communication parameters. In particular, we optimize the MUD matrix based on the second-order cone programming (SOCP) technique, and then develop two efficient algorithms to optimize IRSs' reflecting vectors based on the semi-definite relaxation (SDR) and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques, respectively. Numerical results show that employing IRSs in cell-free MEC systems outperforms conventional MEC systems, resulting in up to about 60% latency reduction can be attained. Semantic communication is envisioned as a promising technique to break through the Shannon limit. However, the existing semantic communication frameworks do not involve inference and error correction, which limits the achievable performance. In this paper, in order to tackle this issue, a cognitive semantic communication framework is proposed by exploiting knowledge graph. Moreover, a simple, general and interpretable solution for semantic information detection is developed by exploiting triples as semantic symbols. It also allows the receiver to correct errors occurring at the symbolic level. Furthermore, the pre-trained model is fine-tuned to recover semantic information, which overcomes the drawback that a fixed bit length coding is used to encode sentences of different lengths. Simulation results on the public WebNLG corpus show that our proposed system is superior to other benchmark systems in terms of the data compression rate and the reliability of communication.

Terahertz (THz) communication is a promising technology for future wireless networks due to its ultra-wide bandwidth. However, THz signals suffer from severe attenuation and poor diffraction capability, making it vulnerable to blocking obstacles. To compensate for these two shortcomings and improve the system performance, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can be exploited to change the propagation direction and enhance the signal strength. In this article, we investigate this promising ultra wide band (UWB) THz IRS communication paradigm. We start by motivating our research and describing several potential application scenarios. Then, we identify major challenges faced by UWB THz IRS communications. To overcome these challenges, several effective key techniques are developed, i.e., the time delayer-based sparse radio frequency antenna structure, delay hybrid precoding and IRS deployment. Simulation results are also presented to compare the system performance for these proposed techniques, thus demonstrating their effectiveness. Finally, we highlight several open issues and research opportunities for UWB THz IRS communications.

In this paper, we jointly design the power control and position dispatch for Multi-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled communication in device-to-device (D2D) networks. Our objective is to maximize the total transmission rate of downlink users (DUs). Meanwhile, the quality of service (QoS) of all D2D users must be satisfied. We comprehensively considered the interference among D2D communications and downlink transmissions. The original problem is strongly non-convex, which requires high computational complexity for traditional optimization methods. And to make matters worse, the results are not necessarily globally optimal. In this paper, we propose a novel graph neural networks (GNN) based approach that can map the considered system into a specific graph structure and achieve the optimal solution in a low complexity manner. Particularly, we first construct a GNN-based model for the proposed network, in which the transmission links and interference links are formulated as vertexes and edges, respectively. Then, by taking the channel state information and the coordinates of ground users as the inputs, as well as the location of UAVs and the transmission power of all transmitters as outputs, we obtain the mapping from inputs to outputs through training the parameters of GNN. Simulation results verified that the way to maximize the total transmission rate of DUs can be extracted effectively via the training on samples. Moreover, it also shows that the performance of proposed GNN-based method is better than that of traditional means.

In this paper, we study the resource allocation problem for an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted OFDM system. The system sum rate maximization framework is formulated by jointly optimizing subcarrier allocation, base station transmit beamforming and IRS phase shift. Considering the continuous and discrete hybrid action space characteristics of the optimization variables, we propose an efficient resource allocation algorithm combining multiple deep Q networks (MDQN) and deep deterministic policy-gradient (DDPG) to deal with this issue. In our algorithm, MDQN are employed to solve the problem of large discrete action space, while DDPG is introduced to tackle the continuous action allocation. Compared with the traditional approaches, our proposed MDQN-DDPG based algorithm has the advantage of continuous behavior improvement through learning from the environment. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarm enabled edge computing is envisioned to be promising in the sixth generation wireless communication networks due to their wide application sensories and flexible deployment. However, most of the existing works focus on edge computing enabled by a single or a small scale UAVs, which are very different from UAV swarm-enabled edge computing. In order to facilitate the practical applications of UAV swarm-enabled edge computing, the state of the art research is presented in this article. The potential applications, architectures and implementation considerations are illustrated. Moreover, the promising enabling technologies for UAV swarm-enabled edge computing are discussed. This work investigates the effect of double intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in improving the spectrum efficient of multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) network operating in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band. Specifically, we aim to solve a weighted sum rate maximization problem by jointly optimizing the digital precoding at the transmitter and the analog phase shifters at the IRS, subject to the minimum achievable rate constraint. To facilitate the design of an efficient solution, we first reformulate the original problem into a tractable one by exploiting the majorization-minimization (MM) method. Then, a block coordinate descent (BCD) method is proposed to obtain a suboptimal solution, where the precoding matrices and the phase shifters are alternately optimized. Specifically, the digital precoding matrix design problem is solved by the quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP), while the analog phase shift optimization is solved by the Riemannian manifold optimization (RMO). The convergence and computational complexity are analyzed. Energy-efficient design is of crucial importance in wireless internet of things (IoT) networks. In order to serve massive users while achieving an energy-efficient operation, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) network with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is studied in this paper. The energy efficiency (EE) is maximized by jointly optimizing the offloading power, local computing frequency, receiving beamforming, and IRS phase-shift matrix. The problem is challenging to solve due to the non-convex fractional objective functions and the coupling among the variables. A semidefinite programming relaxation (SDR) based alternating algorithm is developed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed design outperforms the benchmark schemes in terms of EE. In this paper, we study the spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) of asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) for visible light communication (VLC). Firstly, we derive the achiev-able rates for Gaussian distributions inputs and practical finite-alphabet inputs. Then, we investigate the SE maximization problems subject to both the total transmit power constraint and the average optical power constraint with the above two inputs, respectively. By exploiting the relationship between the mutual information and the minimum mean-squared error, an optimal power allocation scheme is proposed to maximize the SE with finite-alphabet inputs. To reduce the computational complexity of the power allocation scheme, we derive a closed-form lower bound of the SE. Also, considering the quality of service, we further tackle the non-convex EE maximization problems of ACO-OFDM with the two inputs, respectively. The problems are solved by the proposed Dinkelbach-type iterative algorithm. Automatic modulation classification (AMC) is of crucial importance for realizing wireless intelligence communications. Many deep learning based models especially convolution neural networks (CNNs) have been proposed for AMC. However, the computation cost is very high, which makes them inappropriate for beyond the fifth generation wireless communication networks that have stringent requirements on the classification accuracy and computing time. In order to tackle those challenges, a novel involution enabled AMC scheme is proposed by using the bottleneck structure of the residual networks. Involution is utilized instead of convolution to enhance the discrimination capability and expressiveness of the model by incorporating a self-attention mechanism. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed scheme achieves superior classification performance and faster convergence speed comparing with other benchmark schemes.

In this work, we investigate a novel simultaneous transmission and reflection reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted multiple-input multiple-output downlink system, where three practical transmission protocols, namely, energy splitting (ES), mode selection (MS), and time splitting (TS), are studied. For the system under consideration, we maximize the weighted sum rate with multiple coupled variables. To solve this optimization problem, a block coordinate descent algorithm is proposed to reformulate this problem and design the precoding matrices and the transmitting and reflecting coefficients (TARCs) in an alternate manner. Specifically, for the ES scheme, the precoding matrices are solved using the Lagrange dual method, while the TARCs are obtained using the penalty concave-convex method. Additionally, the proposed method is extended to the MS scheme by solving a mixed-integer problem. Moreover, we solve the formulated problem for the TS scheme using a one-dimensional search and the Majorization-Minimization technique. Our simulation results reveal that: 1) Simultaneous transmission and reflection RIS (STAR-RIS) can achieve better performance than reflecting-only RIS; 2) In unicast communication, TS scheme outperforms the ES and MS schemes, while in broadcast communication, ES scheme outperforms the TS and MS schemes.

Considering grant-free transmissions in low-power IoT networks with unknown time-frequency distribution of interference, we address the problem of Dynamic Resource Configuration (DRC), which amounts to a Markov decision process. Unfortunately, off-the-shelf methods based on single-objective reinforcement learning cannot guarantee energy-efficient transmission, especially when all frequency-domain channels in a time interval are interfered. Therefore, we propose a novel DRC scheme where configuration policies are optimized with a Multi-Objective Reinforcement Learning (MORL) framework. Many machine learning frameworks have been proposed and used in wireless communications for realizing diverse goals. However, their incapability of adapting to the dynamic wireless environment and tasks and of self-learning limit their extensive applications and achievable performance. Inspired by the great flexibility and adaptation of primate behaviors due to the brain cognitive mechanism, a unified cognitive learning (CL) framework is proposed for the dynamic wireless environment and tasks. The mathematical framework for our proposed CL is established. Using the public and authoritative dataset, we demonstrate that our proposed CL framework has three advantages, namely, the capability of adapting to the dynamic environment and tasks, the self-learning capability and the capability of 'good money driving out bad money' by taking modulation recognition as an example. Automatic modulation classification enables intelligent communications and it is of crucial importance in today's and future wireless communication networks. Although many automatic modulation classification schemes have been proposed, they cannot tackle the intra-class diversity problem caused by the dynamic changes of the wireless communication environment. In order to overcome this problem, inspired by face recognition, a novel automatic modulation classification scheme is proposed by using the multi-scale network in this paper. Moreover, a novel loss function that combines the center loss and the cross entropy loss is exploited to learn both discriminative and separable features in order to further improve the classification performance. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that our proposed automatic modulation classification scheme can achieve better performance than the benchmark schemes in terms of the classification accuracy. The influence of the network parameters and the loss function with the two-stage training strategy on the classification accuracy of our proposed scheme are investigated.

This paper unveils the importance of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) in a wireless powered sensor network (WPSN). Specifically, a multi-antenna power station (PS) employs energy beamforming to provide wireless charging for multiple Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which utilize the harvested energy to deliver their own messages to an access point (AP). Meanwhile, an IRS is deployed to enhance the performances of wireless energy transfer (WET) and wireless information transfer (WIT) by intelligently adjusting the phase shift of each reflecting element. To evaluate the performance of this IRS assisted WPSN, we are interested in maximizing its system sum throughput to jointly optimize the energy beamforming of the PS, the transmission time allocation, as well as the phase shifts of the WET and WIT phases. The formulated problem is not jointly convex due to the multiple coupled variables. To deal with its non-convexity, we first independently find the phase shifts of the WIT phase in closed-form. We further propose an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm to iteratively solve the sum throughput maximization problem. To be specific, a semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation approach is adopted to design the energy beamforming and the time allocation for given phase shifts of WET phase, which is then optimized for given energy beamforming and time allocation. Moreover, we propose an AO low-complexity scheme to significantly reduce the computational complexity incurred by the SDP relaxation, where the optimal closed-form energy beamforming, time allocation, and phase shifts of the WET phase are derived. Finally, numerical results are demonstrated to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, and highlight the beneficial role of the IRS in comparison to the benchmark schemes., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

Mobile edge computing (MEC)-enabled Internet of Things (IoT) networks have been deemed a promising paradigm to support massive energy-constrained and computation-limited IoT devices. IoT with mobility has found tremendous new services in the 5G era and the forthcoming 6G eras such as autonomous driving and vehicular communications. However, mobility of IoT devices has not been studied in the sufficient level in the existing works. In this paper, the offloading decision and resource allocation problem is studied with mobility consideration. The long-term average sum service cost of all the mobile IoT devices (MIDs) is minimized by jointly optimizing the CPU-cycle frequencies, the transmit power, and the user association vector of MIDs. An online mobility-aware offloading and resource allocation (OMORA) algorithm is proposed based on Lyapunov optimization and Semi-Definite Programming (SDP). Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed scheme can balance the system service cost and the delay performance, and outperforms other offloading benchmark methods in terms of the system service cost.

Energy-efficient design and secure communications are of crucial importance in wireless communication networks. However, the energy efficiency achieved by using physical layer security can be limited by the channel conditions. In order to tackle this problem, an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multiple input single output (MISO) network with independent cooperative jamming is studied. The energy efficiency is maximized by jointly designing the transmit and jamming beamforming and IRS phase-shift matrix under both the perfect channel state information (CSI) and the imperfect CSI. In order to tackle the challenging non-convex fractional problems, an algorithm based on semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation is proposed for solving energy efficiency maximization problem under the perfect CSI case while an alternate optimization algorithm based on $\mathcal{S}$-procedure is used for solving the problem under the imperfect CSI case. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed design outperforms the benchmark schemes in term of energy efficiency. Moreover, the tradeoff between energy efficiency and the secrecy rate is found in the IRS-assisted MISO network. Cognitive radio is a promising technology to improve spectral efficiency. However, the secure performance of a secondary network achieved by using physical layer security techniques is limited by its transmit power and channel fading. In order to tackle this issue, a cognitive unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication network is studied by exploiting the high flexibility of a UAV and the possibility of establishing line-of-sight links. The average secrecy rate of the secondary network is maximized by robustly optimizing the UAV's trajectory and transmit power. Our problem formulation takes into account two practical inaccurate location estimation cases, namely, the worst case and the outage-constrained case. In order to solve those challenging non-convex problems, an iterative algorithm based on $\mathcal{S}$-Procedure is proposed for the worst case while an iterative algorithm based on Bernstein-type inequalities is proposed for the outage-constrained case. The proposed algorithms can obtain effective suboptimal solutions of the corresponding problems. Our simulation results demonstrate that the algorithm under the outage-constrained case can achieve a higher average secrecy rate with a low computational complexity compared to that of the algorithm under the worst case. In this paper, we investigate the energy-efficient hybrid precoding design for integrated multicast-unicast millimeter wave (mmWave) system, where the simultaneous wireless information and power transform is considered at receivers. We adopt two sparse radio frequency chain antenna structures at the base station (BS), i.e., fully-connected and subarray structures, and design the codebook-based analog precoding according to the different structures. Then, we formulate a joint digital multicast, unicast precoding and power splitting ratio optimization problem to maximize the energy efficiency of the system, while the maximum transmit power at the BS and minimum harvested energy at receivers are considered. Due to its difficulty to directly solve the formulated problem, we equivalently transform the fractional objective function into a subtractive form one and propose a two-loop iterative algorithm to solve it. For the outer loop, the classic Bi-section iterative algorithm is applied. For the inner loop, we transform the formulated problem into a convex one by successive convex approximation techniques and propose an iterative algorithm to solve it. Meanwhile, to reduce the complexity of the inner loop, we develop a zero forcing (ZF) technique-based low complexity iterative algorithm. Specifically, the ZF technique is applied to cancel the inter-unicast interference and the first order Taylor approximation is used for the convexification of the non-convex constraints in the original problem. Energy-efficient computation is an inevitable trend for mobile edge computing (MEC) networks. Resource allocation strategies for maximizing the computation efficiency are critically important. In this paper, computation efficiency maximization problems are formulated in wireless-powered MEC networks under both partial and binary computation offloading modes. A practical non-linear energy harvesting model is considered. Both time division multiple access (TDMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) are considered and evaluated for offloading. The energy harvesting time, the local computing frequency, and the offloading time and power are jointly optimized to maximize the computation efficiency under the max-min fairness criterion. Two iterative algorithms and two alternative optimization algorithms are respectively proposed to address the non-convex problems formulated in this paper. Simulation results show that the proposed resource allocation schemes outperform the benchmark schemes in terms of user fairness. Moreover, a tradeoff is elucidated between the achievable computation efficiency and the total number of computed bits.
