To mitigate the continued impact of SARS-CoV-2, influenza A, and influenza B viruses on human health, a smartphone-based point-of-care testing (POCT) system was designed to detect respiratory pathogens through a nucleic acid test. This compact, light-weight, highly automated, and universal system enables the differential diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2, influenza A, and influenza B in approximately 30 min in a single-tube reaction. Numerous hospitals and disease control and prevention center assessed the triple POCT system’s detection threshold, sensitivity, specificity, and stability, and have concluded that all the assessments were comparable to those of fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based testing. The triple POCT system is suitable as an onsite rapid-diagnosis device, as well as for pathogen screening at airports and customs.

In this paper, the deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of 300M steel are comprehensively studied by using the split-Hopkinson pressure bar technology, with an emphasis on the analytical estimate of material flow and microstructure distribution subjected to high strain rate. It is found that the grains have been significantly refined due to dynamic recrystallization (DRX) and major continuous DRX supplemented by few discontinuous ones governs the microstructure evolution. The dislocation activities associated with the angle change of grain boundaries and mechanical twinning dominate the deformation mechanism of 300M steel under high strain rate. Besides, nanoparticles in the form of carbide precipitation are uniformly distributed in the deformed zone, which strengthens the material by pinning the dislocations. A thermo-mechanical coupled analytical model considering dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization was innovatively developed, based on which the distribution of grain size and microhardness was predicted. The results indicated that the flow behavior described by the models and the calculated grain size as well as microhardness are proven to agree well with the results of experimental analysis.

IntroductionThe vagus nerve, the primary neural pathway mediating brain-body interactions, plays an essential role in transmitting bodily signals to the brain. Despite its significance, our understanding of the detailed organization and functionality of vagal afferent projections remains incomplete.MethodsIn this study, we utilized manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MEMRI) as a non-invasive and in vivo method for tracing vagal nerve projections to the brainstem and assessing their functional dependence on cervical vagus nerve stimulation (VNS). Manganese chloride solution was injected into the nodose ganglion of rats, and T1-weighted MRI scans were performed at both 12 and 24 h after the injection.ResultsOur findings reveal that vagal afferent neurons can uptake and transport manganese ions, serving as a surrogate for calcium ions, to the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS) in the brainstem. In the absence of VNS, we observed significant contrast enhancements of around 19–24% in the NTS ipsilateral to the injection side. Application of VNS for 4 h further promoted nerve activity, leading to greater contrast enhancements of 40–43% in the NTS.DiscussionThese results demonstrate the potential of MEMRI for high-resolution, activity-dependent tracing of vagal afferents, providing a valuable tool for the structural and functional assessment of the vagus nerve and its influence on brain activity.

Based on the variation law of helical gear time-varying contact line length， an analytical algorithm of helical gear friction and friction torque is deduced. Based on the time-varying friction coefficient model， the influences of sliding friction on meshing force and meshing efficiency are studied. The results show that considering the sliding friction， the tooth surface meshing force is less than the normal force， the tooth surface meshing force increases with the increase of the rotating speed， decreases with the increase of tooth surface roughness and lubricating oil viscosity， and the influence is more significant in the multi-tooth meshing area. Under the action of time-varying friction coefficient， the average meshing efficiency increases with the increase of speed and torque， and decreases with the increase of tooth surface roughness， especially when the viscosity of the lubricating oil is large at low temperature.

Tooth surface friction has an important impact on the scoring，macro and micro pitting corrosion and transmission efficiency of meshing gear pairs. The research on the calculation and control method of tooth surface friction has significant engineering significance for the performance optimization and efficiency improvement of meshing gear pairs. It is precisely based on the important role of tooth surface friction that many scholars at home and abroad have conducted comprehensive studies on the calculation of friction coefficient and the influence of tooth surface friction on the contact damage and dynamic characteristics of meshing gear pairs. However，there is still no unified calculation method and design specification，there are still many technical research deficiencies，and it is still difficult to obtain reliable application in engineering. By summarizing relevant technical literatures at home and abroad，the current research status of tooth surface friction is expounded，the difficulties and hotspots in the research are sorted out， the development trend of tooth surface friction is predicted， and reference technical direction for further research on tooth surface friction is provided.

Interactions between the brain and the stomach shape both cognitive and digestive functions. Recent human studies report spontaneous synchronization between brain activity and gastric slow waves in the resting state. However, this finding has not been replicated in any animal models. The neural pathways underlying this apparent stomach-brain synchrony is also unclear. Here, we performed functional magnetic resonance imaging while simultaneously recording body-surface gastric slow waves from anesthetized rats in the fasted vs. postprandial conditions and performed a bilateral cervical vagotomy to assess the role of the vagus nerve. The coherence between brain fMRI signals and gastric slow waves was found in a distributed “gastric network”, including subcortical and cortical regions in the sensory, motor, and limbic systems. The stomach-brain coherence was largely reduced by the bilateral vagotomy and was different between the fasted and fed states. These findings suggest that the vagus nerve mediates the spontaneous coherence between brain activity and gastric slow waves, which is likely a signature of real-time stomach-brain interactions. However, its functional significance remains to be established.

Resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) has been used to assess the effect of vision loss on brain plasticity. With the emergence of vision restoration therapies, rsFC analysis provides a means to assess the functional changes following sight restoration. Our study demonstrates a partial reversal of blindness-induced rsFC changes in Argus II retinal prosthesis patients compared to those with severe retinitis pigmentosa (RP). For 10 healthy control (HC), 10 RP, and 7 Argus II subjects, four runs of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) per subject were included in our study. rsFC maps were created with the primary visual cortex (V1) as the seed. The rsFC group contrast maps for RP > HC, Argus II > RP, and Argus II > HC revealed regions in the post-central gyrus (PostCG) with significant reduction, significant enhancement, and no significant changes in rsFC to V1 for the three contrasts, respectively. These findings were also confirmed by the respective V1-PostCG ROI-ROI analyses between test groups. Finally, the extent of significant rsFC to V1 in the PostCG region was 5,961 in HC, 0 in RP, and 842 mm3 in Argus II groups. Our results showed a reduction of visual-somatosensory rsFC following blindness, consistent with previous findings. This connectivity was enhanced following sight recovery with Argus II, representing a reversal of changes in cross-modal functional plasticity as manifested during rest, despite the rudimentary vision obtained by Argus II patients. Future investigation with a larger number of test subjects into this rare condition can further unveil the profound ability of our brain to reorganize in response to vision restoration.

The rail traffic gearbox is a key part of the transmission system in the train. It plays a vital role in the operation of the train. Heat balance analysis of rail traffic gearbox has great influence on the operation of the gearbox. Based on subway gear transmission system， the heat balance equations of the transmission based on thermal network method is established， and the calculation models of heat source，thermal resistance and convective transfer coefficient are given，the temperature of each node is solved by the heat balance equations. The research shows that the efficiency of the rail transit gearbox decreases with the increase of the speed， and the temperature of each node increases with the increase of the speed，and the temperature of the gear meshing point is the highest.

In order to study the influence of lubrication conditions on the scuffing damage of gear under low speed and heavy load， the meshing of gear teeth is simulated by a pair of ring specimens in rolling and sliding contact， and the scuffing tests of 18CrNiMo7-6 carburized steel gear material under different lubrication conditions are carried out on MJP-30A rolling wear testing machine. The variation of friction coefficient among different tests and the surface morphology of the specimens after tests are analyzed. The results show that the contact stress of scuffing damage is 1 927 MPa under the dry friction condition， and the friction coefficient decreases with the increase of contact stress before scuffing damage occurs. Under the good lubrication， no scuffing occurs even when the contact stress is increased as high as 3 047 MPa， and the friction coefficient decreases with the increase of contact stress during the test. Under the condition of oil scarcity， the friction coefficient increases obviously with the increase of oil scarcity， and the scuffing damage occurs only when the friction coefficient almost increases to the level of dry friction coefficient. Therefore， in order to avoid the scuffing damage of the gear tooth surfaces in the operation under low speed and heavy load， the lubrication status should be taken as an important monitoring index of preventing the serious starvation of lubrication or dry friction contact from occurring in the meshing of tooth surfaces.

Low detection accuracy and narrow detection range are observed when detecting weak guided wave signals with the Duffing oscillator as a result of a limited frequency band. In order to solve these problems, we proposed a detection method for detecting weak ultrasonic guided waves of arbitrary frequency based on a defect detection method using the Duffing oscillator scanned by a moving window and combined with variable scale and resampling. In this paper, the proposed method by examining the defect echo signals collected on steel pipe samples and detecting ultrasonic guided wave signals excited by arbitrary frequency was effectively validated. Experiment results show that the proposed approach can be used to detect guided wave signals of arbitrary frequency and arbitrary sampling step size with the fixed system. It is very important for expanding the range of defect detection in pipes with guided ultrasonic waves and improving the sensitivity for detecting small defects in engineering applications.

Researchers leverage advances in machine learning to study the brain’s mechanism for natural language processing. Results suggest that the brain represents a continuous semantic space and uses distributed cortical networks for differential coding of semantic relations.

As an extension of classical fuzzy set, intuitionistic fuzzy set (IFS) has been widely utilized in decision making. Based on IFS, intuitionistic fuzzy value (IFV) and linguistic intuitionistic fuzzy set (LIFS) have also been proposed to represent uncertain assessments of alternatives in different intuitionistic fuzzy decision environment. Theoretically, IFV, IFS or LIFS own themselves processing methods in decision making. However, they may be utilized to represent intuitionistic fuzzy assessments of alternatives in the same decision problem, i.e., multi-decision makers provide IFVs, IFSs or LIFSs to represent uncertain assessments of alternatives in the decision problem. In such case, the significant challenge is to unify IFVs, IFSs and LIFSs in the decision making matrices. In the paper, novel transformation methods are presented to unify IFVs, IFSs and LIFSs. To this end, mixed intuitionistic fuzzy decision matrix is presented to represent IFV, IFS or LIFS assessments of alternatives provided by decision makers, then transformation functions are developed to unify IFVs, IFSs and LIFSs in the decision making matrices, their properties are also analysed. The decision making method is presented to solve the intuitionistic fuzzy decision making problems with IFVs, IFSs or LIFSs, which is consisted of six main phases, accordingly the algorithm is designed to carry out the problems. Illustrative examples show that transformation functions are useful in intuitionistic fuzzy decision environment, the proposed decision making method is an effective and alternative tool for the intuitionistic fuzzy decision making problems with IFVs, IFSs or LIFSs.

Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) data exhibits complex but structured patterns. However, the underlying origins are unclear and entangled in rsfMRI data. Here we establish a variational auto-encoder, as a generative model trainable with unsupervised learning, to disentangle the unknown sources of rsfMRI activity. After being trained with large data from the Human Connectome Project, the model has learned to represent and generate patterns of cortical activity and connectivity using latent variables. The latent representation and its trajectory represent the spatiotemporal characteristics of rsfMRI activity. The latent variables reflect the principal gradients of the latent trajectory and drive activity changes in cortical networks. Representational geometry captured as covariance or correlation between latent variables, rather than cortical connectivity, can be used as a more reliable feature to accurately identify subjects from a large group, even if only a short period of data is available in each subject. Our results demonstrate that VAE is a valuable addition to existing tools, particularly suited for unsupervised representation learning of resting state fMRI activity.

Based on the finite element numerical analysis method， the dynamics equation of herringbone gear transmission system is given and the model of rotor-bearing-gear dynamics system is established. The influence of shear， bending， torsion， axial force， gyroscopic effect and internal damping of rotor shaft are considered in the modeling process， and the influence of time-varying mesh stiffness and transmission error of herringbone gear pair is also considered. The dynamics analysis of high speed gear rotor is also carried out， which is basically consistent with the measured data of the test gearbox.

Based on the dynamic measurement method of grating， a set of gear transmission error measurement and data processing device and system are established to realize the precise measurement of gear transmission error. According to the forming process principle， an accurate finite element analysis model including gear assembly error， manufacturing error and modification is created， then the process of simulation test is conducted， and the simulation results and test data are compared to verify the correctness of the finite element model.

BIG, a regulator of polar auxin transport, is necessary to regulate the growth and development of Arabidopsis. Although mutations in the BIG gene cause severe root developmental defects, the exact mechanism remains unclear. Here, we report that disruption of the BIG gene resulted in decreased quiescent center (QC) activity and columella cell numbers, which was accompanied by the downregulation of WUSCHEL-RELATED HOMEOBOX5 (WOX5) gene expression. BIG affected auxin distribution by regulating the expression of PIN-FORMED proteins (PINs), but the root morphological defects of big mutants could not be rescued solely by increasing auxin transport. Although the loss of BIG gene function resulted in decreased expression of the PLT1 and PLT2 genes, genetic interaction assays indicate that this is not the main reason for the root morphological defects of big mutants. Furthermore, genetic interaction assays suggest that BIG affects the stem cell niche (SCN) activity through the SCRSCARECROW (SCR)/SHORT ROOT (SHR) pathway and BIG disruption reduces the expression of SCR and SHR genes. In conclusion, our findings reveal that the BIG gene maintains root meristem activity and SCN integrity mainly through the SCR/SHR pathway.

Gastric pacing and stimulation strategies were first proposed in the 1960s to treat motility disorders. However, there has been relatively limited clinical translation of these techniques. Experimental investigations have been critical in advancing our understanding of the control mechanisms that innervate gut function. In this review, we will discuss the use of pacing to modulate the rhythmic slow wave conduction patterns generated by interstitial cells of Cajal in the gastric musculature. In addition, the use of gastric high-frequency stimulation methods that target nerves in the stomach to either inhibit or enhance stomach function will be discussed. Pacing and stimulation protocols to modulate gastric activity, effective parameters and limitations in the existing studies are summarized. Mathematical models are useful to understand complex and dynamic systems. A review of existing mathematical models and techniques that aim to help refine pacing and stimulation protocols are provided. Finally, some future directions and challenges that should be investigated are discussed.

On August 8, 2017, an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 on the Richter scale occurred in Jiuzhaigou, Sichuan, causing significant damage to both life and property. Traditional geological hazard investigation is difficult in Jiuzhaigou because of the high altitude, the high-altitude canyons, and the vegetation-covered seismic areas. This study explores the technical advantages of using airborne LiDAR technology to penetrate vegetation and gather information directly from the surface, rapidly acquiring airborne 3D point cloud data in difficult areas. Through the preprocessing of data, the high-precision digital terrain and landform results were obtained. Comparative research found that the DEM obtained by high-precision airborne LiDAR technology has significant advantages in terms of the accuracy, details, and microgeomorphology of the data collected. The results can be directly used in the early identification of disasters, such as during the initial collapse or for disaster management. Studies have shown that airborne LiDAR has the technical advantage of penetrating vegetation to the surface and can, therefore, be used to guide the early identification and management of geological disasters in similar areas in the future.

Temperature/pH-responsive carboxymethyl cellulose/poly (N-isopropyl acrylamide) interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) aerogels (CMC/Ca2+/PNIPAM aerogels) were developed as a novel drug delivery system. The aerogel has a highly open network structure with a porosity of more than 90%, which provides convenient conditions for drug release. The morphology and structure of the CMC/Ca2+/PNIPAM aerogels were characterized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Micro-CT, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), pore size analysis, and cytotoxicity analysis. The analysis results demonstrate that the aerogel is non-toxic and has more active sites, temperatures, and pH response performances. The anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) was successfully loaded into aerogels through physical entrapment and hydrogen bonding. The drug loading and sustained-release model of aerogels are used to fit the drug loading and sustained-release curve, revealing the drug loading and sustained-release mechanism, and providing a theoretical basis for the efficient drug loading and sustained release.

Elevated CO2 (eCO2) often reduces leaf stomatal aperture and density thus impacts plant physiology and productivity. We have previously demonstrated that the Arabidopsis BIG protein distinguishes between the processes of eCO2-induced stomatal closure and eCO2-inhibited stomatal opening. However, the mechanistic basis of this action is not fully understood. Here we show that eCO2-elicited reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in big mutants was compromised in stomatal closure induction but not in stomatal opening inhibition. Pharmacological and genetic studies show that ROS generated by both NADPH oxidases and cell wall peroxidases contribute to eCO2-induced stomatal closure, whereas inhibition of light-induced stomatal opening by eCO2 may rely on the ROS derived from NADPH oxidases but not from cell wall peroxidases. As with JA and ABA, SA is required for eCO2-induced ROS generation and stomatal closure. In contrast, none of these three signals has a significant role in eCO2-inhibited stomatal opening, unveiling the distinct roles of plant hormonal signaling pathways in the induction of stomatal closure and the inhibition of stomatal opening by eCO2. In conclusion, this study adds SA to a list of plant hormones that together with ROS from distinct sources distinguish two branches of eCO2-mediated stomatal movements.

In this study, an ultrasound Fenton-like sponge iron system was used to enhance the degradation efficiency for chloramphenicol (CAP). Three single-factor experiments of reaction pH, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration, and sponge iron (Fe) concentration were used to explore the impact on CAP degradation efficiency. The response surface method revealed the interactions between various factors. The degradation efficiency for CAP was as high as 99.97% at pH = 3, 3.19 mmol/L H2O2, and a sponge iron concentration of 2.26 g/L. The degradation rate for CAP was significantly reduced upon the addition of some inorganic salts, mainly due to the quenching of OH radicals. Gram-negative (G(−)) Escherichia coli and Gram-positive (G(+)) Staphylococcus aureus were used to evaluate the changes in the antibacterial activity of CAP. Finally, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used to identify the degradation products and the degradation path for the products was proposed based on the detected products.

Titration method (dropping-on method) was introduced as an efficient approach for determining the mercury ion (Hg2+) concentration in aqueous solution by using fabricated cellulosic paper-based test strips. In this study, dithizone used as a recognition reagent was physically loaded on cellulosic paper-based test strips for Hg2+ selective recognition. The sensing mechanism was established on the spectral absorption rate of the coordination compound that was formed by dithizone and Hg2+ under strong acidic conditions. The calibration curve was obtained by the absorbency of Hg2+-dithizone complexes from different Hg2+ concentration solutions, and the correlation coefficient (R2) reached 0.9971. The detection range of the test trip for Hg2+ was obtained at 0.1 μg/mL to 30 μg/mL. Moreover, these superior cellulosic paper-based test strips have a rapid color-forming time (1.5 min) and low volume demand (3.7 μL samples at 0.0127 g/L dithizone recognition concentration). This portable paper-based test strip can give potential applications for field screening or on-site semiquantitative analysis.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is a therapy for epilepsy and depression. However, its efficacy varies and its mechanism remains unclear. Prior studies have used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to map brain activations with VNS in human brains, but have reported inconsistent findings. The source of inconsistency is likely attributable to the complex temporal characteristics of VNS-evoked fMRI responses that cannot be fully explained by simplified response models in the conventional model-based analysis for activation mapping. To address this issue, we acquired 7-Tesla blood oxygenation level dependent fMRI data from anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats receiving electrical stimulation at the left cervical vagus nerve. Using spatially independent component analysis, we identified 20 functional brain networks and detected the network-wise activations with VNS in a data-driven manner. Our results showed that VNS activated 15 out of 20 brain networks, and the activated regions covered >76% of the brain volume. The time course of the evoked response was complex and distinct across regions and networks. In addition, VNS altered the strengths and patterns of correlations among brain networks relative to those in the resting state. The most notable changes in network-network interactions were related to the limbic system. Together, such profound and widespread effects of VNS may underlie its unique potential for a wide range of therapeutics to relieve central or peripheral conditions.

Complex, sustained, dynamic, and naturalistic visual stimulation can evoke distributed brain activities that are highly reproducible within and across individuals. However, the precise origins of such reproducible responses remain incompletely understood. Here, we employed concurrent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and eye tracking to investigate the experimental and behavioral factors that influence fMRI activity and its intra- and inter-subject reproducibility during repeated movie stimuli. We found that widely distributed and highly reproducible fMRI responses were attributed primarily to the high-level natural content in the movie. In the absence of such natural content, low-level visual features alone in a spatiotemporally scrambled control stimulus evoked significantly reduced degree and extent of reproducible responses, which were mostly confined to the primary visual cortex (V1). We also found that the varying gaze behavior affected the cortical response at the peripheral part of V1 and in the oculomotor network, with minor effects on the response reproducibility over the extrastriate visual areas. Lastly, scene transitions in the movie stimulus due to film editing partly caused the reproducible fMRI responses at widespread cortical areas, especially along the ventral visual pathway. Therefore, the naturalistic nature of a movie stimulus is necessary for driving highly reliable visual activations. In a movie-stimulation paradigm, scene transitions and individuals' gaze behavior should be taken as potential confounding factors in order to properly interpret cortical activity that supports natural vision.

Softwood kraft lignin is a renewable type of woody material that can be converted to value-added products, for example, as a paper strength additive in the paper industry. In this study, the monomers of methacryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC), acrylic acid (AA), and acrylamide (AM) were grafted on softwood kraft lignin (SKL) to prepare three different SKL copolymers. Fourier-transform infrared, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, charge density, elemental, and molecular weight analyses confirmed that the monomers were successfully grafted onto SKL. The grafting rates of SKL-DMC, SKL-AA, and SKL-AM copolymers were 80.35%, 82.70%, and 79.48%, respectively. The application of SKL copolymers as a paper additive for enhancing paper physical properties was studied. The results indicated that at a 2 wt % dosage of SKL copolymers, the increase in the physical properties of paper is maximum.

In this study, phosphorylated birchwood xylan was produced under alkali conditions using trisodium trimetaphosphate. Three single-factor experiments were used to explore the influences of time, temperature, and the molar ratio of trisodium trimetaphosphate to xylan on the degree of substitution (DS) and charge density of xylan. The response surface methodology was used to explore the interaction of these three factors. Phosphorylated xylan with a maximum DS of 0.79 and a charge density of −3.40 mmol/g was produced under the optimal conditions of 80 °C, 4 h, and a molar ratio of xylan/sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) of 1/3. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), ascorbic acid method analyses, and inductively coupled plasma–atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES) analyses confirmed that the phosphate groups were successfully attached to xylan. Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed that phosphorylated xylan was less stable than birchwood xylan. Furthermore, the phosphorylated xylan was applied as a flocculant for removing ethyl violet dye from a simulated dye solution. The results indicated that more than 95% of the dye was removed from the solution. The theoretical and experimental values of charge neutralization for the dye removal were close to one another, confirming that charge neutralization was the main mechanism for the interaction of dye and phosphorylated xylan. The impacts of salts on the flocculation efficiency of phosphorylated xylan were also analyzed.

The stomach is the primary reservoir of the gastrointestinal tract, where ingested content is broken down into small particles. Coordinated relaxation and contraction is essential for rhythmic motility and digestion, but how the muscle motor innervation is organized to provide appropriate graded regional control is not established. In this study, we recorded neuromuscular transmission to the circular muscle using intracellular microelectrodes to investigate the spread of the influence of intrinsic motor neurons. In addition, microanatomical investigations of neuronal projections and pharmacological analysis were conducted to investigate neuromuscular relationships. We found that inhibitory neurotransmission to the circular muscle is graded with stimulus strength and circumferential distance from the stimulation site. The influence of inhibitory neurons declined between 1 and 11 mm from the stimulation site. In the antrum, corpus, and fundus, the declines at 11 mm were about 20%, 30%, and 50%, respectively. Stimulation of inhibitory neurons elicited biphasic hyperpolarizing potentials often followed by prolonged depolarizing events in the distal stomach, but only hyperpolarizing events in the proximal stomach. Excitatory neurotransmission influence varied greatly between proximal stomach, where depolarizing events occurred, and distal stomach, where no direct electrical effects in the muscle were observed. Structural studies using microlesion surgeries confirmed a dominant circumferential projection. We conclude that motor neuron influences extend around the gastric circumference, that the effectiveness can be graded by the recruitment of different numbers of motor neuron nerve terminals to finely control gastric motility, and that the ways in which the neurons influence the muscle differ between anatomical regions. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: This study provides a detailed mapping of nerve transmission to the circular muscle of the different anatomical regions of rat stomach. It shows that excitatory and inhibitory influences extend around the gastric circumference and that there is a summation of neural influence that allows for finely graded control of muscle tension and length. Nerve-mediated electrical events are qualitatively and quantitatively different between regions, for example, excitatory neurons have direct effects on fundus but not antral muscle.
