This letter reports a high-performance solar-blind phototransistor based on N2-annealed $\beta $ -Ga2O3 microflake for weak light detection. The phototransistor exhibits an ultra-low dark current of 27 fA, a high external quantum efficiency of $8.36\times 10^{7}$ %, a photo-to-dark-current ratio of $1.08\times 10 ^{7}$ , a low power consumption of 2.92 pW, and a narrow-band response with a cut off wavelength of 263 nm. In addition, the spectral selectivity can be well modulated by the gate bias and reaches a maximum ${R} _{240}/{R} _{400}$ ratio of $2.4\times 10 ^{4}$ . Especially, an ultra-high responsivity ( ${R}$ ) of $1.71\times 10^{5}$ A/W and a record-high detectivity ( ${D} ^{\ast }$ ) of $1.19\times 10^{18}$ Jones have been achieved under 254nm illumination of $4.1~\mu \text{W}$ /cm2. The superior weak-light-detection performance of the device makes it one of the best Ga2O3 detectors towards solar-blind photodetection application.

Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) production and usage might lead to a large discharge of ZnO NPs into the natural environment, raising concerns of pollution and ecological security. The effects of ZnO NPs on waste activated sludge hydrolytic acidification and microbial communities were studied in semi-continuous fermentation systems. The fermentation performance of eight ZnO NPs concentrations including ZnO NPs normal [0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10 mg/g mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS)] and ZnO NPs shock (10, 1000, 1000 and 10,000 mg/g MLSS) were discussed, and their biodegradability was also analyzed. The experimental results showed that proteins, polysaccharides and short-chain fatty acids were enhanced by ZnO NPs, particularly by ZnO NPs shock. Low ZnO NPs concentrations inhibited coenzyme 420 (F420) and dehydrogenase activities but enhanced α-glucosidase and protease activities. At present, the problem of non-point source pollution and carbon emissions caused by excessive application of fertilizer is increasingly serious and has caused damage to the ecological environment. The “zero growth of fertilizer use by 2020 action plan” was introduced to solve the related ecological and environmental problems. Based on the panel data of 31 provinces in China from 1998 to 2020, this paper used the super efficiency SBM model to measure the ecological efficiency of grain production in China, and further verified the mediating effect of fertilizer application amount on the effect of zero growth of fertilizer on the ecological efficiency of grain production using the mediating effect model. The results showed that (1) zero growth of fertilizer action had a significant effect on the ecological efficiency of grain production. That is, the implementation of zero growth of fertilizer action can help improve the ecological efficiency of grain production. (2) The application amount of fertilizer played a mediating role in the mechanism of the effect of zero growth of fertilizer action on the ecological efficiency of grain production. (3) The implementation of the zero growth of fertilizer action effectively reduced the amount of fertilizer application and reduced fertilizer non-point source pollution and carbon emissions, which improved the ecological efficiency of grain production. According to the results of empirical research, to promote the sustainable development of agricultural production, more relevant ecological and environmental protection policies should be introduced and relevant subsidies should be increased.

Gallium oxide (Ga

$\alpha $ -phase-dominated Ga2O3 films were hete- roepitaxially grown on ${c}$ -plane sapphire substrate by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD), followed by the fabrication of ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors (PDs) with a metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) structure using a Ti/Au metal stack as the electrode in an interdigitated geometry. The PDs possess a record low dark current of 81 fA under a bias voltage of 12 V, with a high sensitivity as confirmed by a record high photo-to-dark-current ratio exceeding 107 under 254 nm light illumination. Furthermore, the PDs also exhibit a high responsivity and the photoconductive gain of 11.5 A/W and 55, respectively. Most importantly, it shows an ultrahigh detectivity of ${1.0} \times {10}^{{15}}$ Jones with a quite fast response of 42ms, paving the way for advancement of next-generation PD applications.

An enhancement-mode $\beta $ -Ga2O3 metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect solar-blind phototransistor on Si-doped homoepitaxial film grown by molecular beam epitaxy is demonstrated in this letter. Gate-recess process was employed to fully deplete the Ga2O3 channel to achieve positive threshold voltage ${V}_{{\textsf {th}}}$ (7 V), which broadens the operating range of the solar-blind phototransistor. The dark current of about 0.7 pA is extremely low. Under 254-nm light illumination of 63 $\mu \text{W}$ /cm2, the change of drain current reaches more than 6 orders of magnitude. Record high detectivity of 1.3 $\boldsymbol {\times }\,\,10^{{\textsf {16}}}$ Jones and photo-to-dark current ratio of $1.1\,\,{\boldsymbol {\times }}\,\,10^{{\textsf {6}}}$ are obtained, respectively. In addition, the rise and decay time are as short as 100 and 30 ms, respectively. High responsivity of $3\,\,\boldsymbol {\times }\,\, 10^{{\textsf {3}}}$ A/W and external quantum efficiency of $1.5\,\,\boldsymbol {\times }\,\,10^{{\textsf {6}}}$ % are also achieved with apparent solar-blind photodetection.

High performance $\beta-\text{Ga}_{2}\mathrm{O}_{3}$ field-effect transistor (FET) solar-blind photodetectors (SBPDs) with record detectivity (D*) of $3.87\times 10^{17}$ Jones, responsivity (R) of $2.50\times 10^{4}\mathrm{A}/\mathrm{W}$ , photo-to-dark-current ratio (PDCR) of $7.87\times 10^{6}$ , and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of $1.22\times 10^{7}\%$ are reported based on mechanically exfoliated $\beta-\text{Ga}_{2}\mathrm{O}_{3}$ micro-flakes. The excellent performance of the $\beta-\text{Ga}_{2}\mathrm{O}_{3}$ detector under $\mu \mathrm{W}/\text{cm}^{2}$ level illumination makes it one of the best Ga 2 O 3 SBPDs towards weak light detection, sharp imaging, and safe communication application.

Dry eye (DE) is a highly prevalent ocular surface disease which affects the quality of life and results in low working efficiency. Frequent instillation is required due to low bioavailability of conventional eye drops. The aim of this study is to develop a novel formulation of tacrolimus (TAC), routinely prescribed for DE, by combination of the microcrystal technology and layer-by-layer assembly. First, nonspherical tacrolimus microcrystals (TAC MCs) are synthesized by antisolvent-induced precipitation. These TAC MCs are modified by alternate deposition of poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) subsequently to obtain CMC-coated TAC MCs (TAC-(PAH/CMC)3 ). The resultant formulations are evaluated in vivo in a mouse DE model induced by an intelligently controlled environmental system. Compared with commercially available TAC eye drops and the TAC MCs counterpart, TAC-(PAH/CMC)3 exhibits superior therapeutic performance with reduced drug instillation frequency, which is attributed to the nonspherical geometry of MCs, the lubricant, mucoadhesive effect of CMC, and the anti-inflammatory function of TAC. Therefore, TAC-(PAH/CMC)3 represents a better option for the management of DE.

Currently, the non-rare-earth Mn 4+ -activated oxide red phosphor is of great interest as color converter for warm white light-emitting diodes (W-LEDs), owing to its admirable luminescent properties and low price. Herein, a novel blue-light activated Ca 14 Zn 6 Ga 10 O 35 :Mn 4+ (CZG:Mn 4+ ) phosphor, exhibiting strong red emission attributed to Mn 4+ : 2 E g → 4 A 2g spin-forbidden transition in region of 650–750 nm under 462 nm excitation, is successfully synthesized through a traditional solid-state reaction route in air. Subsequently, the microstructure and luminescent performance of this red-emitting phosphor are discussed in detail. The crystal field strength ( Dq ) and the Racah parameters ( B and C ) are carefully calculated to estimate the nephelauxetic effect of Mn 4+ suffering from the CZG host lattice. In addition, the concentration quenching and thermal quenching characteristics are also systematically investigated. After incorporating CZG:Mn 4+ and commercial Y 3 Al 5 O 12 :Ce 3+ (Ce:YAG) phosphors into a blue LED device, warm white light with high color rendering index and low correlated color temperature is successfully achieved. Therefore, the CZG:Mn 4+ phosphor can serve as color converter for use in warm W-LED applications.

Salinity (NaCl) was used in waste activated sludge (WAS) anaerobic fermentation system which had been presented to greatly enhance the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) production including protein and polysaccharide and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Salinity enhanced soluble protein and polysaccharide (SB-EPS) release which was 4.04 times (protein) and 1.83 times (polysaccharide) compared to 0 g/L NaCl level. More important, salinity restrained the coenzyme 420 activity (F420), but increased the hydrolase activity. Abundant hydrolysis of substrate and highly active hydrolase led to abundant SCFA production. Pearson correlation coefficient showed that the protein became the main reaction substrate for SCFA generation.

Light detection in the deep-ultraviolet (DUV) solar-blind waveband has attracted interest due to its critical applications, especially in safety and space detection. A DUV photodetector based on wide-bandgap semiconductors provides a subversive scheme to simplify the currently mature DUV detection system. As an ultra-wide-bandgap (4.4–5.3 eV) semiconductor directly corresponding to the DUV solar-blind waveband, Ga2O3 has an important strategic position in the prospective layout of semiconductor technology owing to its intrinsic characteristics of high breakdown electric field, excellent tolerance of high/low temperature, high resistance to radiation, and rich material systems. As the only native substrate that can be fabricated from melt-grown bulk single crystals, β-Ga2O3 has attracted a lot of attention both in power-electronic and photo-electronic devices. In addition, other metastable phases (e.g. α, ϵ, γ) of Ga2O3 have attracted great interest due to their unique properties. In this work, we discuss the advances in achieving bulk and film Ga2O3 materials with different crystal phases. In addition, the latest achievements with polymorphous Ga2O3-based solar-blind photodetectors (SBPDs) and the methods to enhance their performance, including doping, annealing, and transparent electrodes, are also discussed. Furthermore, as the most desirable application, DUV imaging technologies based on Ga2O3 SBPDs are systematically summarized. Finally, conclusions regarding recent advances in Ga2O3 SBPDs, remaining challenges, and prospects are presented and discussed.

Waste activated sludge with low organic content (WAS-LOC) always led to the failure of anaerobic fermentation. A potentially practical technology based on SO4−, i.e. Potassium Monopersulfate (PMS) was used into WAS-LOC anaerobic fermentation system and had been presented to greatly improve both the intracellular and extracellular constituents, which improved the biological enzyme activity and produced a mass of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Results showed that the maximal SCFAs production was 716.72 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L (0.08 mg PMS/mg SS), which increased to 43.70 times comparing to that of 0.00 mg PMS/mg SS level (16.40 mgCOD/L). The activities of biological enzymes increased 1.42 times for protease, 4.38 times for α-glucosidase, 2.1 times for alkaline phosphatase, 1.70 times for acidic phosphatase and 1.37 times for dehydrogenase respectively comparing to natural fermentation system, but the coenzyme 420 was restrained prominently. PMS positively enriched the abundance of microbial community responsible for WAS-LOC hydrolysis and SCFAs production.

Interleukin (IL)-6 is a multifunctional cytokine which has been showed to induce up-regulated expression of Fc epsilon RI receptor and histamine production in mast cells. However, little is known of its effects on Th2 cytokine secretion and protease activated receptor (PAR) expression in mast cells. In the present study, we examined potential influence of IL-6 on IL-13, IL-4 and IL-10 release from P815 cells and PAR expression on P815 cells by using flow cytometry analysis, quantitative real-time PCR, ELISA and cellular activation of signaling ELISA (CASE) techniques. The results showed that IL-6 induced up to 1.8-fold increase in IL-13, but not IL-4 or IL-10 release from P815 cells, and FSLLRY-NH(2) did not affect IL-6 induced IL-13 release. Tryptase elicited 2.0-fold increase in IL-13 release from P815 cells, which can be inhibited by IL-6. IL-6 elicited the up-regulated expression of PAR-1, PAR-2, PAR-3 and PAR-4 mRNAs, but had little effects on expression of PAR proteins. U0126, PD98059 and LY204002 abolished IL-6 induced IL-13 release when they were preincubated with P815 cells, indicating ERK and Akt cell signaling pathways may be involved in the event. In conclusion, IL-6 can stimulate IL-13 release from mast cells through an ERK and Akt cell signaling pathway dependent, but PAR independent mechanism.

Summary Background The cockroach is a major source of indoor allergens, which cause perennial rhinitis and asthma. Per a 7 is one of the major allergens from the American cockroach, eliciting IgE reaction in over 50% of sera from allergic individuals. However, the actions of Per a 7 in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases remain poorly understood. Objective The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of Per a 7 on the expression of protease-activated receptors (PARs) on murine mast cells and the release of T-helper type 2 (Th2) cytokines from these cells. Methods Per a 7 gene was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The purified recombinant Per a 7 (rPer a 7) was used to challenge murine mast cells P815 and the expression of PARs was determined by using real-time quantitative RT-PCR and flow cytometry. The release of IL-4 and IL-13 was detected with ELISA. Results rPer a 7 was solubly expressed in E. coli and the purified rPer a 7 reacted with 75% (six out of eight) of the sera from cockroach-allergic patients. Following stimulation of rPer a 7, the expression of PAR-1, PAR-2, PAR-3 and PAR-4 mRNAs on P815 cells increased by 8.7-, 6.8-, 14.4- and 8.8-fold, respectively, following 2- and 6-h incubation periods, and the expression of PAR-1, PAR-2 and PAR-4 proteins was enhanced following 16-h incubation. rPer a 7 provoked approximately up to a 4.8- and 2.3-fold increase in IL-4 and IL-13 release from P815 cells following 6- and 16-h incubation periods. Conclusion rPer a 7 induced up-regulation of PAR expression on P815 cells and provoked Th2 cytokines IL-4 and IL-13 secretion from these murine mast cells, which implicated that this major cockroach allergen is likely to contribute to the development of cockroach-related allergic disease.

Interleukin (IL)-29 is a relatively newly discovered cytokine, which has been shown to be actively involved in the pathogenesis of allergic inflammation. However, little is known of the effects of IL-29 on protease activated receptor (PAR) expression and potential mechanisms of cytokine production in mast cells. In the present study, we examined potential influence of IL-29 on PAR expression and cytokine production in P815 and bone marrow derived mast cells (BMMCs) by using flow cytometry analysis, quantitative real time PCR, and ELISA techniques. The results showed that IL-29 downregulated the expression of PAR-1 by up to 56.2%, but had little influence on the expression of PAR-2, PAR-3 and PAR-4. IL-29 also induced downregulation of expression of PAR-1 mRNA. However, when mast cells were pre-incubated with IL-29, thrombin-, trypsin- and tryptase-induced expression of PAR-2, PAR-3 and PAR-4 was upregulated, respectively. IL-29 provoked approximately up to 1.9-fold increase in IL-4 release when mast cells was challenged with IL-29. Administration of IL-29 blocking antibody, AG490 or LY294002 abolished IL-29-induced IL-4 release from P815 cells. It was found that IL-29 diminished trypsin- and tryptase-induced IL-4 release from P815 cells following 16 h incubation. In conclusion, IL-29 can regulate expression of PARs and tryptase- and trypsin-induced IL-4 production in mast cells, through which participates in the mast cell related inflammation.

GM-CSF has been showed to be able to induce up-regulated receptor and cytokine expression in mast cells in inflammatory conditions. However, little is known of its effects on protease activated receptor (PAR) expression and Th2 cytokine secretion from mast cells. In the present study, we examined potential influence of GM-CSF on mast cell PAR expression and IL-4 and IL-10 release by using flow cytometry analysis, quantitative real time PCR, ELISA and cellular activation of signaling ELISA (CASE) techniques. The results showed that GM-CSF induced up to 3.0-fold increase in IL-4 release from P815 cells, and FSLLRY-NH(2) and trans-cinnamoyl (tc)-YPGKF-NH(2) did not affect GM-CSF induced IL-4 release. GM-CSF reduced tryptase and trypsin induced IL-4 release by up to approximately 55.8% and 70.3%, respectively. GM-CSF elicited the upregulated expression of PAR-1, PAR-2, PAR-3 and PAR-4 mRNAs, but enhanced only PAR-4 protein expression in P815 cells. U0126, PD98059 and LY204002 almost completely abolished GM-CSF induced IL-4 release when they were preincubated with P815 cells for 30 min, indicating ERK and Akt cell signaling pathways may be involved in the event. In conclusion, GM-CSF can stimulate IL-4 release from mast cells through an ERK and Akt cell signaling pathway dependent, but PAR independent mechanism. GM-CSF may serve as a regulator for IL-4 production in mast cells and through which participates in the mast cell related inflammation.

It has been recognized that protease-activated receptors (PARs), interleukin (IL)-4 and IL-6 are involved in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases, and that IL-12 plays a role in adaptive immune response. However, little is known of the effect of IL-12 on protease-induced cytokine release from mast cells. In the present study, we examined potential influence of IL-12 on mast cell PAR expression and IL-4 and IL-6 release. The results showed that IL-12 downregulated the expression of PAR-2 and upregulated expression of PAR-4 on P815 cells. It also downregulated expression of PAR-2 mRNA, and upregulated expression of PAR-1, PAR-3 and PAR-4 mRNAs. However, IL-12 enhanced trypsin- and tryptase-induced PAR-2 and PAR-2 mRNA expression. It was observed that IL-12 induced release of IL-4, but reduced trypsin- and tryptase-stimulated IL-4 secretion from P815 cells. PD98059, U0126 and LY294002 not only abolished IL-12-induced IL-4 release but also inhibited IL-12-induced phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase and Akt. In conclusion, IL-12 may serve as a regulator in keeping the balance of Th1 and Th2 cytokine production in allergic inflammation.
