Micron-scale zero-valent iron (ZVI)-based material has been applied for hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) decontamination in wastewater treatment and groundwater remediation, but the passivation problem has limited its field application. In this study, we combined aluminum chloride solution with ZVI (pcZVI-AlCl3) to enhance Cr(VI) removal behavior under aerobic conditions. The optimal pre-corrosion conditions were found to be 2.5 g/L ZVI, 0.5 mM AlCl3, and a 4 h preconditioning period. Different kinds of techniques were applied to detect the properties of preconditioned ZVI and corrosion products. The 57Fe Mössbauer spectra showed that proportions of ZVI, Fe3O4, and FeOOH in pcZVI-AlCl3 were 49.22%, 34.03%, and 16.76%, respectively. The formation of Al(OH)3 in the corrosion products improved its pHpzc (point of zero charge) for Cr(VI) adsorption. Continuous-flow experiments showed its great potential for Cr(VI) removal in field applications. The ZVI and corrosion products showed a synergistic effect in enhancing electron transfer for Cr(VI) removal. The mechanisms underlying Cr(VI) removal by pcZVI-AlCl3 included adsorption, reduction, and precipitation, and the contribution of adsorption was less. Background and aims: Liver regeneration retardation post partial hepatectomy (PH) is a common clinical problem after liver transplantation. Identification of key regulators in liver regeneration post PH may be beneficial for clinically improving the prognosis of patients after liver transplantation. This study aimed to clarify the function of junctional protein‐associated with coronary artery disease (JCAD) in liver regeneration post PH and to reveal the underlying mechanisms. Methods: JCAD knockout (JCAD‐KO), liver‐specific JCAD‐KO (Jcad△Hep) mice and their control group were subjected to 70% PH. RNA sequencing was conducted to unravel the related signalling pathways. Primary hepatocytes from KO mice were treated with epidermal growth factor (EGF) to evaluate DNA replication. Fluorescent ubiquitination‐based cell cycle indicator (FUCCI) live‐imaging system was used to visualise the phases of cell cycle. Results: Both global and liver‐specific JCAD deficiency postponed liver regeneration after PH as indicated by reduced gene expression of cell cycle transition and DNA replication. Prolonged retention in G1 phase and failure to transition over the cell cycle checkpoint in JCAD‐KO cell line was indicated by a FUCCI live‐imaging system as well as pharmacologic blockage. JCAD replenishment by adenovirus reversed the impaired DNA synthesis in JCAD‐KO primary hepatocyte in exposure to EGF, which was abrogated by a Yes‐associated protein (YAP) inhibitor, verteporfin. Mechanistically, JCAD competed with large tumour suppressor 2 (LATS2) for WWC1 interaction, leading to LATS2 inhibition and thereafter YAP activation, and enhanced expression of cell cycle‐associated genes. Conclusion: JCAD deficiency led to delayed regeneration after PH as a result of blockage in cell cycle progression through the Hippo–YAP signalling pathway. These findings uncovered novel functions of JCAD and suggested a potential strategy for improving graft growth and function post liver transplantation. As persulfate (S2O82−) is being increasingly used as an alternative oxidizing agent, developing low-cost and eco-friendly catalysts for efficient S2O82− activation is potentially useful for the treatment of wastewater containing refractory organic pollutant. In this study, the degradative features and mechanisms of carbamazepine (CBZ) were systematically investigated in a novel FeS- S2O82− process under near-neutral conditions. The results exhibited that CBZ can be effectively eliminated by the FeS-S2O82− process and the optimal conditions were: 250 mg/L FeS, 0.5 mmol/L S2O82−, and pH = 6.0. The existence of Cl− (1 and 50 mmol/L) has little influence on the CBZ elimination, while both HCO3− and HPO42− (1 and 50 mmol/L) significantly suppressed the CBZ removal in the FeS-S2O82− process. CBZ could be degraded via a radical mechanism in the FeS-S2O82− process, the working radical species (i.e., SO4•− and •OH) were efficiently formed via the promoted decomposition of S2O82− by the surface Fe2+ on the FeS and the dissolved ferrous ions in solution. Based on the identified oxidized products and Fukui index calculations, a possible degradation pathway of CBZ was speculated. More importantly, a two-stage oxidation mechanism of CBZ elimination was speculated in the FeS-S2O82− process, the activation of S2O82− by the surface-active Fe(II) of FeS dominated in the initial 5 min, while homogeneous oxidation reactions played more essential parts than others in the following reaction stage (5–60 min). Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive type of cancer. Its current first‐line postsurgery regimens are radiotherapy and temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy, both of which are DNA damage‐inducing therapies but show very limited efficacy and a high risk of resistance. There is an urgent need to develop novel agents to sensitize GBM to DNA‐damaging treatments. Here it is found that the triterpene compound stellettin B (STELB) greatly enhances the sensitivity of GBM to ionizing radiation and TMZ in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, STELB inhibits the expression of homologous recombination repair (HR) factors BRCA1/2 and RAD51 by promoting the degradation of PI3Kα through the ubiquitin‐proteasome pathway; and the induced HR deficiency then leads to augmented DNA damage and cell death. It is further demonstrated that STELB has the potential to rapidly penetrate the blood‐brain barrier to exert anti‐GBM effects in the brain, based on zebrafish and nude mouse orthotopic xenograft tumor models. The study provides strong evidence that STELB represents a promising drug candidate to improve GBM therapy in combination with DNA‐damaging treatments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
