Background: The aim of this study was to figure out the predictive value of inflammatory factors on the efficacy of Dexamethasone adjuvant therapy for refractory purulent meningitis in children. Methods: In, this study, a regression analysis method was employed to select a sample of 38 children with refractory purulent meningitis, 40 children with purulent meningitis, and 40 healthy children who visited to Ganzhou People's Hospital for physical These participants were then assigned to the Dexamethasone, standard care and the control groups. The inflammatory factors in the three groups were compared, and a multivariate Logisitic regression was analysis was conducted to examine the predictive indicators and efficacy of Dexamethasone treatment in children with refractory purulent meningitis. Results: The levels of CRP, TNF-a, IL-6, PCT and IL-1 were found to be significantly higher in the Dexamethasone group to both the standard care and the control (P < 0.05). Through multivariate Logisitic regression analysis, it was determined that CRP, TNF-a, IL-6, PCT, and IL-1 were reliable predictors of the efficacy of Dexamethasone treatment in children with refractory purulent meningitis. These biomarkers demonstrated good predictive performance, with CRP and IL-1 showing superior predictive performance. Conclusions: Inflammatory factors have a certain predictive value for the efficacy of Dexamethasone adjuvant therapy for refractory purulent meningitis in pediatric patients.

This article gives a review on the application status and clinical effect of behavioral activation （BA） therapy for patients with late-life depression， in which the theoretical content， research status and the characteristics of clinical application of BA therapy for patients with late-life depression were introduced， and the existing limitations and possible directions for future research were summarized， so as to provide references for the localization of BA therapy for patients with late-life depression.

Aim: Chemosensory anhedonia refers to the lack of hedonic ability to experience pleasure through the senses of smell and taste, which reduces the pleasure and comfort of food, and increases the risk of nutritional and immune deficiencies. However, there is no direct scientific evidence regarding chemosensory anhedonia in patients with late‐life depression (LLD). The aim of this study was to investigate chemosensory anhedonia in patients with LLD, and its potential association with depressive symptoms and cognitive function. Methods: A total of 114 patients with LLD and 92 normal controls were included in this study. They experienced clinical assessment, Chemosensory Pleasure Scale assessment, 17‐item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale assessment and cognitive assessments, which contain the Verbal Fluency Test. The associations between chemosensory pleasure and depressive symptoms or cognitive function in patients with LLD were explored using partial correlation analysis and mediation analysis. Results: The Chemosensory Pleasure Scale scores were lower in the LLD group than in the normal control group, and were negatively correlated with the total scores and factors' scores (retardation, cognitive bias and anxiety/somatization) of the 17‐item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, and positively correlated with the Verbal Fluency Test scores. The scores for the Food and Imagination dimensions of the Chemosensory Pleasure Scale showed partial mediating effects on the differences in Cognitive bias (a factor of the 17‐item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale) between patients with LLD and normal controls. Conclusions: Patients with LLD showed significant chemosensory anhedonia, and both depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment were associated with the severity of chemosensory anhedonia. Background: Elevated homocysteine levels and late‐life depression are risk factors for cognitive decline: a comparative study highlighted the association of late‐onset depression (LOD) with more significant cognitive deficits and brain pathology than early‐onset depression (EOD). Limited research has explored the possible interaction between homocysteine levels and their correlation with cognitive performance in patients with EOD and LOD. Methods: Fifty‐seven individuals with EOD, 56 with LOD, and 89 matched healthy controls (HC) were recruited. Global cognition, memory, execution, language, attention, visuospatial skills, and plasma homocysteine levels were examined. Results: Compared with HC and patients with EOD, patients with LOD had higher plasma homocysteine levels (p < 0.05), with no significant difference between HC and patients with EOD (p > 0.05). Furthermore, homocysteine levels and diagnosis groups showed significant main effects on depression and cognition, with no significant interaction effects being observed. Additionally, plasma homocysteine levels were negatively correlated with global cognition, attention, visuospatial skills, and executive function in patients with LOD (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Compared with HC and patients with EOD, elevated homocysteine levels in patients with LOD were independently associated with cognitive performance. The potential therapeutic efficacy of homocysteine‐lowering B‐vitamin supplementation could be explored as a viable intervention to mitigate the documented debilitating effects of cognitive deficits in this population. Background: Functional abnormalities of the habenula in patients with depression have been demonstrated in an increasing number of studies, and the habenula is involved in cognitive processing. However, whether patients with late‐life depression (LLD) exhibit disrupted habenular functional connectivity (FC) and whether habenular FC mediates the relationship between depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment remain unclear. Methods: Overall, 127 patients with LLD and 75 healthy controls were recruited. The static and dynamic FC between the habenula and the whole brain was compared between LLD patients and healthy controls, and the relationships of habenular FC with depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment were explored by correlation and mediation analyses. Results: Compared with the controls, patients with LLD exhibited decreased static FC between the right habenula and bilateral inferior frontal gyrus (IFG); there was no significant difference in dynamic FC of the habenula between the two groups. Additionally, the decreased static FC between the right habenula and IFG was associated with more severe depressive symptoms (especially psychomotor retardation) and cognitive impairment (language, memory, and visuospatial skills). Last, static FC between the right habenula and left IFG partially mediated the relationship between depressive symptoms (especially psychomotor retardation) and cognitive impairment (verbal fluency and working memory). Conclusions: Patients with LLD exhibited decreased static FC between the habenula and IFG but intact dynamic FC of the habenula. Introduction: The connection between periodontitis and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) continues to receive attention. However, whether periodontitis is a risk factor for MCI remains still uncertain. This study aims to systematically analyze the available literature regarding the relationship between periodontitis and the risk of developing MCI and whether the periodontal health of MCI patients is poorer. Methods: A literature search of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases was conducted to include all studies on the relationship between periodontitis and MCI from inception to April 2023. The studies were independently screened by 2 researchers, and those meeting the inclusion criteria were extracted and cross-checked. Pooled odds ratio (OR) or mean difference (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was calculated using either a fixed-effects or random-effects model. Results: Seven studies with a total of 3,973 participants were included. Meta-analysis results showed a statistically significant higher incidence of MCI in patients with periodontitis (OR, 1.70 (95% CI: 1.24–2.32, p < 0.001) compared to healthy participants. A subgroup meta-analysis showed that the pooled OR for the risk of MCI in patients with severe periodontitis was 2.09 (95% CI: 1.49–2.92, p < 0.001). In addition, attachment loss (MD = 0.44, 95% CI: 0.12–0.75, p < 0.001) and plaque index (MD = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.50–0.93, p < 0.001) were higher in MCI patients compared with the control group, but the pocket probing depth (MD = 0.21, 95% CI: −0.08 to 0.49, p = 0.15) was not significantly different between the two groups. Conclusions: Patients with periodontitis are at a higher risk of developing MCI, and the periodontal health of MCI patients is generally compromised. The formation of oil–mineral aggregates (OMAs) is essential for understanding the behavior of oil spills in estuaries and coastal waters. We utilized statistical methods (screening design) to identify the most influential variables (seven factors in total) during OMA formation. Time was the most important factor, followed by temperature and oil/clay ratio. Moreover, machine learning was applied to predict the OMA median diameter (D50). Among the three tested algorithms, the Random Forest (RF) algorithm showed the highest accuracy, with a training R2 of 0.99 and testing R2 of 0.93. An open-source software tool that integrates the RF algorithm was developed, allowing users to easily estimate the OMA D50 based on input variables. The valuable results and the practical tool we have developed enhance the understanding and management of environmental impacts associated with oil spills. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
