Abstract

In recent decades, remote sensing of vegetative drought and phenology has gained considerable attention from researchers, leading to a significant increase in research activity in this area. While new drought indices are being proposed, there is also growing attention on how variations in phenology affect drought detection. This review begins by exploring the crucial role of satellite optical and thermal remote sensing technologies in monitoring vegetative drought. It presents common methods after revisiting the foundational concepts. Then, the review examines remote sensing of land surface phenology (LSP) due to its strong connection with vegetative drought. Subsequently, we investigate vegetative drought detection techniques that consider phenological variability and recommend approaches to improve the detection of vegetative drought, emphasizing the necessity to incorporate phenological metrics. Finally, we suggest potential future work and directions. Unlike other review papers on remote sensing of vegetative drought, this review uniquely surveys the comprehensive advancements in both detecting vegetative drought and estimating LSP through optical and thermal remote sensing. Abstract

Ecological vulnerability assessment is crucial for environment protection, ecological restoration and resource utilization. However, many former studies have limitations in the indicator system of the assessment, which were not comparable for different types of ecologically vulnerable areas. It is difficult to apply directly to the ecological vulnerability assessment of different types and in various regions. Aiming to solve these problems, the study proposed a well-established and comprehensive indicator system for ecological vulnerability assessment and conducted ecological vulnerability assessment application of five types of typical ecologically vulnerable areas of China based on remote sensing, meteorological, geographic and other data. The results show that the average EVIs value of Zhangbei County ranging from 0.525 to 0.559 are the highest among the five research areas during the four periods, followed by Zoige region and Xiamen bay. However, the region with the lowest average EVI value varies. In 2005 and 2015, it was Taihe County, while in 2010 and 2020, it was the Sanjiangyuan region. The variation of average EVIs in the five typical areas presents slight fluctuation and remains generally stable from 2005 to 2020. It indicates that the environmental protection measures and projects undertaken by the Chinese government in recent years have had a striking effect, curbing the trend of ecological environment deterioration. 16. Spatiotemporal Patterns in the Urban Heat Island Effect of Several Contemporary and Historical Chinese "Stove Cities".

Abstract

Various cities in China have been identified as "stove cities" either in contemporary or historical times, exposing residents to extremely high temperatures. Existing studies on the heat island effect in stove cities are not representative nationwide. The outdated nature of these studies also significantly diminishes the relevance of their findings. Thus, reassessing the urban heat island (UHI) effect of stove cities is necessary in the context of global climate change and urbanization. This study focuses on seven symbolic and geographically distributed stove cities in China, including Nanjing, Chongqing, Wuhan, Fuzhou, Beijing, Xi'an, and Turpan. Using land surface temperature (LST) data, this study investigates the summer heat island effect from 2013 to 2023 and analyzes changes in the spatial distribution of the heat island effect. This paper utilizes impervious surface data and urban clustering algorithms to define urban and suburban areas. It then examines the evolution and spatial distribution of surface urban heat island intensity (SUHII) over time. Incorporating urbanization variables like population density and urban area, the study analyzes the main factors affecting the heat island effect from 2013 to 2018. We find that all cities continuously expand, with the annual average heat island effect intensifying over the years. With the exception of Beijing, the summer heat island or cool island effects in the remaining six cities show an overall intensification trend. From 2013 to 2018, SUHII has been primarily related to urban expansion and planning layout, with minimal impact from factors such as population density. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
